I'm using command prompt as an admin. I wanna refresh my pc with a custom refresh image so I can keep my programs. Does this mean windows 10 no longer has custom refresh images as a feature?
Is there a known way to create your own custom shell folders or "special folders?" Default shell folders are Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc. The benefit of a shell folder is you can place it in a Users' Personal Folder, but have the location actually be in another location (even another drive).
An example of a program adding a shell folder would be Zune with "Podcasts."
A shell folder can be identified by its "Location" tab in the properties menu.
I'd like to create my own shell folders to things like "Books" or "Programs" etc. with kinds of files I make. Sort of like a library.

View 9 RepliesI created a new folder on the desktop and I can't change its icon to a one I downloaded. selecting the icon from the stock list (shell32.dll) works fine though. I tried with another folder in different location, still no luck. however, when I created a shortcut to the folder I placed on the desktop, I can change its icon to the custom one just fine. I just wanna have a folder with a blank icon.
edit: I fixed the issue. turns out Windows didn't like the fact that there was an "ą" letter in the icon path.
I wrote a batch script to set a custom icon to folders:
ECHO [.ShellClassInfo]>%1desktop.in_
ECHO IconResource=C:Windowssystem32imageres.dll,22>>%1desktop.in_
move %1desktop.in_ %1desktop.ini
attrib +S +H %1desktop.ini
The desktop.ini it produces is identical to the one when doing the process manually:
[.ShellClassInfo]
IconResource=C:Windowssystem32imageres.dll,22
But it doesn't work. It only works if I set the folder icon manually.
A desktop icon suddenly appeared on my desktop.. If I delete it, the whole desktop is also deleted... The desktop folder on the drive, does not contain that icon...

View 6 RepliesI have Windows 10 Home 10240 build upgraded from Windows 8.1 Core. I have a inconvenient problem, if i create a new folder on the desktop. Right-Click -> New -> Folder, seems that explorer.exe crashes. Everything disappears desktop icon, taskbar. After 1 or 2 seconds everything comes back to normal and folder is created.

The only way I can open a folder (such as Downloads) is to right click, then select open.
I have tried creating new shortcuts and they do not work. Regular program shortcuts work fine. If I create a new short cut to a file, (ie a photo), I have to right click and select OPEN to view the file, then when I create a shortcut, it does not work unless I right click and select open.
I restored system to earlier date and all is well. When restarting computer I get force fed update. Selecting NEW from context menu was not there. I fixed that. Why come I get cmd when I try to open a folder?
About a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. Is this normal for Windows 10 after being installed? Do i have to install something (maybe an update) for the "New" to appear in the Context Menu?
View 9 RepliesI upgraded from Windows 7 Pro and find that the 'Show Desktop' rectangular space at the far right side of the notification area is missing although posted desktop images Windows 10 have the same rectangular space. However, if I hover the cursor over the screen border in that area for about 5 seconds the desktop appears and if I click on the border it remains otherwise it reverts to the previous screen. So, I assume that the 'Show Desktop' functionality is working OK even though the rectangular space is missing. How to restore the rectangular space?
