How To Install Updates From A USB
Mar 22, 2016
I have Windows 10, but there's an update that needs to be installed. I don't have enough space on my hard drive to download it. I've put the file on a flash drive. How do I update my Windows from there?

I've been struggling for a while with KB3093266 not installing, and now KB3097617 won't install either.
They download and do the install prompt, then restart. But upon restarting, it says the updates have failed and reappear in Windows Update. Tried the standard troubleshooter, and by resetting WU to no avail.

I cleaned installed Win10 Pro using the Media Creation Tool and how come I only got 3 updates? I am assuming I would get more updates than these.
Running version 1511 build 10586
Is it because Win10 is too new ???
And I kept pressing the Check for Updates button and it said no more new updates.

I wanted to clarify whether updates that require a restart to install, only install if you actually click 'restart' or do they install if you normally shutdown the computer and then turn it on again later?
I'm sure you could do it that way on Windows 7. Its difficult having to restart my laptop every time, I'd rather shut down normally at the end of the day once i'm done with it and then following day upon booting up, updates install.

When I open my Windows Update, the Upgrade to Windows 10 is there ready for me to download. It has a button saying "Get Started". I checked to see what available updates are ready for me and it shows I have about 8 Windows 7 updates to be installed. How do I get around the Upgrade to Windows 10 in order to only install the Windows 7 updates? I am presently holding off in the installation of Windows 10, but I do want to continue updating my Windows 7.

To the best of my knowledge you can only defer Windows 10 Updates if you have the Pro version.
Is there a way to selectively install/uninstall updates in any version?
Also, what is this "update blocking" tool that I am hearing about and where do I find it?

1) Does 10 check for check for updates automatically? if so, how do I turn that option off?
2) Earlier I checked for updates and it automatically started installing as soon as it was done checking, is there a way to select which updates to install?
3) How much does the battery drain if you have the "hey cortana" voice activation on?

When using windows update for Windows 10 the update will find updates but will not completely download or install. Version 1511 does not show up to download either. I have been on original version of Win 10 for several months.

So I am soon going to make the jump to Win10 but I really dont like the fact that I wont be able to choose when to install updates. So I decided to get the pro version of Windows 10. So, if I buy Win7 Pro, upgrade my current Win7 HP and then upgrade to Win10, will I get the Win10 Pro as the free upgrade?

I recently bought a HP Envy 17t with Windows 10 64 Bit on it. The first thing I did was to check if any updates were available, there were, and I downloaded and installed them. I checked again about 10 after that (about 2 weeks after getting the laptop). Since then however I can't install any upgrades. I start the download/install process, then leave. When I get back a couple of hours later, I see an error message saying that the MS servers could not be reached.
I don't know what's going on here. I haven't been able to download and install any Windows or MS Office upgrades in over 4 weeks.

Today I had to do a reinstall to fix some things (it didn't fix them lol) so now I'm stuck. Windows 10 will not update. I get the error code 0x80240442 after a while. I'm not sure if its an issue with my drivers not being updated, but all of the web pages I have found that have this error code won't open. Not even the Microsoft pages, including hotmail.

I've run the troubleshooter, but still my nicely functioning Windows 10 has one kink -- daily updates download, but then during the required restart, the installation fails and the update is not operational. The restarts take forever, sometimes rolling through the restart process 3 times, before the failure message appears. Win 10 and the computer continue to function well, but without the daily updates, that won't last.

If you don't want windows 10 to automatically install updates, open the Services desktop app. Scroll down until you come to the service: Windows update (Enables the detection, download and installation of updates for Windows and other programs.) Double click on it. From the new box select Start up type and change from Automatic to Disabled. Windows will no longer automatically install updates on you computer. When you want to install updates yourself, Go back to the windows update service and change the startup type back to automatic...

If I understood this : clearly, then does it mean that Windows will activate itself from some Windows activation servers that are somehow written into my hardware even if I do a clean install deleting everything in my Windows partition?
Also, since the built-in "Create a Recovery Drive" will take forever or display an error when ''Backup system files to the recovery drive' is checked", I'm trying to create an Installation media. But I'm stuck with which ISO I should download. Now, there's Windows 10, Windows 10 Single Language, Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Home N. I'm running Windows 10 Home at the moment. Which was upgraded from Windows 8.1(I think there was ''Single Language'' written after "8.1", not sure though). Which Version should I download. And if I install the wrong version by chance, will Windows still activate after I find out and install the right version? Please clarify these.... I'm really looking forward to do a clean-install to get rid of all the errors and bugs with drivers and just start over.

I've read the instructions on various websites.
I had Windows 8.1 Home activated and updated.
Upgraded to Windows 10 Home. It activated and updated.
Did a clean install of Windows 10 Home and it won't activate. I skipped both key input screens and it says my key is blocked.

A friend's Asus 8.1 laptop was stuck in an automatic repair loop so I suggested that he upgrade to Windows 10.
Because he was unable to access his system, I opted for a clean install and I created a bootable Win 10 usb on another pc. I used this usb to insall Win 10 on his machine, skipping any requests to activate.
I was under the impression that Win 10 would automatically activate on installation. I'm not sure he ever signed up for the free upgrade offer before Win 8 on his machine decided to implode.

I have a laptop that was originally on Windows 8.1. I upgraded it to Windows 10 recently, however there were a variety of deeply embedded issues. I tried every troubleshooting method I could find, tried to revert back to 8.1, and tried to repair and reset Windows 10. Nothing was working, so I had to use installation media from doing a clean install on my PC to install a fresh version of Windows 10 on my laptop.
I was forced to format the hard drive, and delete all the partitions to even get the clean install to work (the upgrade did a real number on my initial system), and because of this I'm now unable to activate Windows 10. The upgrade was the Home edition, and I clean installed the Home N edition (as far as I'm aware there's little to no difference). I made a note of the product key that was listed in the upgraded 10 before the clean install, which I assume was my product key from 8.1 that carried over, as it is 20 characters long and not 25.
Is there any way I can activate my clean installed Windows 10 Home N in this situation?

I've upgraded to 10 from W7, and I've had nothing but problems with it, so i'm concerned about the installation to a different SSD than the one I'm using, my mind is telling me it should be fine as the Upgrade happened all on the same hardware, but changing the location of installation, does that affect activation?
