View 7 RepliesIt's something I use a lot to view pics, photos etc (they open by default in Photo-Shop, but I don't want that to happen just to look at a file) and it's a one-click operation to open Windows Photo Viewer to start a slide-show or do some basic editing.
I can select 'Open With' every time I want to preview, and then select Windows Photo Viewer but that gets very tiresome very quickly. I can't set it as the default or I then lose the Photo-Shop option when I click 'Open'.
Any setting or registry mod that I can use to restore the Preview option??? I have looked in the Tutorials section, without success.
When clicking on the start menu or using the windows key on my keyboard nothing happens as well as trying to type in the search bar. I have tried running commands in power shell and booting my pc in safe mode using msconfig, but both of these had no effect. I also tried create a new user account but when i click on "create new user" nothing happens no loading or sign of any process taking place nothing happens. And i cant reinstall windows because windows is forcing me to delete about 630 gb worth of files and games which i dont want to re download since it will take a month, and an even longer time to reconfigure them and add all the mods i had within the game files

View 4 RepliesI recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
Any command that can be pasted into a shortcut; That opens the power menu or user menu? I.e where you sign out or lock your computer.
The shortcut is meant to be on the desktop.
Some screenshots showing what menus I'm referring to.
why wont the start menu open?

After starting my PC, sometimes my start menu does not open. And even if it did then the search function doesn't work.
Like if I open the start menu and type "a" then the start menu it goes full black with 4 blue dots at it's top moving left to right indicating that it is loading but it's stuck forever.
I am using Windows 10 Pro clean install with dual monitor setup.
Recently I upgraded to Windows 10 and it worked good for a while.
Yesterday system went down due to power outage, system is able to boot but does not open Start Menu.

I've been having problems with Internet speed variations recently. Today I had a Tech from my ISP here to look at the problem and he discovered that immediately after boot I have over 50 active sessions open on my PC, even before I open a browser window. This machine has Norton Security installed and active and I've recently run Norton Eraser As Well as Malwarebytes and neither of them have found anything significant while scanning.
what could because of these sessions to open?
I've been noticing that my Internet speed has become very erratic and overall greatly reduced recently. This afternoon I had a tech from my ISP, and investigate the problem he found that for some reason my computer is a large number of Active Sessions immediately after I boot up endless gift is worth by the time I open a browser session. The computer is secured by Norton Security and I have recently run Norton Eraser As Well as Malwarebytes. None of these found any problems.
What would be causing the excessive active sessions to be open? I'm talking some more the neighborhood of 50 of them are openly immediately after booting!
i upgraded to Windows 10 Home, from windwos 7 home premium. And now i can't open start menu... Also there is no windows update? Is there windows update in windows 10? I tried sfc /scannow and something with powershell.
View 6 RepliesI did a clean install of w10 from w7 a couple of months ago and everything has been running fine until about a week ago since when I've not been able open the start menue. Reading through other posts on line with the same problem has not provided a solution so far. I've ran the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/Restor Health and that "completed suucessfully" Then ran a fsc/scannow and that "did not find an integrity violations". I've tried to do a system restore but it fails saying a fil;e is preventing it, maybe the anti-virus.

View 2 RepliesHad an unused SSD laying on my desk so decided to put Windows 10 on my primary computer. Had a few problems getting it installed from my Build 10041 iso but finally got it updated to build 10061. Was having problems booting up and kept getting an initialization failed error. On a whim tried a restore point and low and behold it booted into Windows 10. Problem now is I can't open the start menu. Clicking on the taskbar icon does nothing and the ctrl/esc keyboard combo doesn't work either. It will be a bit of a pita but if all else fails I can plug my Windows 8 drive back in and format the Windows 10 drive for a reinstall. Wish Microsoft would hurry and post up a build 10061 iso download.
View 11 RepliesIt started to happen yesterday, and when I "Right Click -> Properties" in any icon, nothing shows up. I tested with every other right click menu's options and they worked fine.

View 1 RepliesI have installed mcafee. The windows button wont open making microsoft edge unusable and a few other things, like the search bar unusable. Any fix for this other than refreshing or resetting or changing or removing any files?? When I right click it a gray menu pops up but if I give it a normal click i get a loading wheel then nothing.
View 1 RepliesI upgraded to Windows 10 last night and have had nothing but problems. The biggest one is the fact that I cannot open the start menu, I had worked around it by right clicking it and then selecting what I needed from there. However now that doesn't even work.

The above don't seem to give me open with notepad in context menu unlike in win7.
I got this problem on new "open with" menu. A empty entry appears for image file extensions. (see picture below).
View 5 RepliesI can not access the "open with" menu..it's dimmed or not enabled in all the files.. Even though i can open the files with any application if i tried the menu at the top in the ribbon.
I have tried removing it from the registry and add it back again but that didn't fix it...
So my mail app was not opening links. So I looked up how to reinstall the mail app. Got to this: [URL]....
I uninstalled the apps, then ran the powershell command: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} to reinstall the mail app.
A bunch of red errors appeared in the prompt and now my start menu, notifications, onedrive,... won't work.
How to dis-associate (un-associate, remove) one option from the windows-explorer "open with" menu.
For ex.:
Windows 10 -> Explorer -> file.mp4 -> "Open with" gives me these options:
VLC, GOM, Movies & TV, Photos, Windows Media Player, etc..
I want to remove Photos and Movies & TV from the menu.
