Sep 14, 2015Windows Media Player is still in Windows 10. In Windows 7 and 8, it played a DVD movie. So, I pop in Lord of the Rings, and Windows 10 cannot play DVDs. It can read all the files, but does not have native support for playing a DVD movie with Windows Media Player or any built-in software.
Of course, I download VLC Media Player and watched it, but seriously Microsoft... Why? What is the legitimate reason for removing such a feature like that. It would have required no work to keep it.

Feb 2, 2016WIN10 update from WIN8.1 converted all my .jpg format photos to .mix format items, which I can NOT open or access. My "new" WIN10 operating system will not even recognize the .mix format for conversion. I cannot restore to WIN8.1 as I am pretty sure the .mix files will not restore back to the original .jpg. Photos are part of family genealogy collection.
WIN10 has also corrupted a number of my resident applications, in that they run much slower, and it keeps wanting me to use 1-DRIVE and I-CLOUD for storage which I do NOT, repeat do NOT, want to do.
7-zip Compression Files Saved In PDF Adobe Format

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 7-zip but it isn't working.
Photo Rotated To Portrait Format On PC But Thumbnail Stay In Landscape Format
Aug 27, 2015Why, after rotating a photo from landscape format to portrait on my PC, does the thumbnail stay in landscape format even though the photo is now in portrait format?
In Windows 7 and previous Windows OS's, the thumbnail of photos rotated with the actual photo but in 10 the thumbnail does not rotate with the photo. How can I correct this?

Nov 23, 2015I am aware that windows 10 (I am used to Windows 7) will not negatively play MPG files. I know this is a side effect of the codec being ripped out to prevent DVD playback via Media Player. The annoying thing is I have quite a few family MPG files mainly from our ageing Sony Camcorder on my system. Luckily I have Cyberlink Media Show pre installed that can play the files within it's own software and the media suite (espresso) can convert said files to other formats.
However, converting takes time and it is frustrating that media player 12 won't do the job and Windows Explorer won't display these MPG files with the handy thumbnail within file explorer viewing. Given that I am a little distrustful of codec packs and all my other files such as MP4, WMV etc etc play well I am looking for a solution that maybe just allows windows explorer to display the thumbnails and as an added bonus Media Player can once again play them. It does seem draconian that MS stifled a common playback format such as MPG in the last 2 windows and a major backwards step. I know I could download something like VLC or Media Player Classic but it seems pointless seeing as I have software that can already play them.
I tried K Lite Codec Pack a while back but hated the effect it had that I uninstalled. It was causing thumbnails to constantly refresh everytime I opened a folder. So is there a way of slipping in a single codec only related to MPG files without risk of unsettling all the other stuff that works well? Many of the codec packs seem to have the unpleasant side effect of slipping in extra installations and seem very dodgy and capable of causing grief.
Does Not Play WMV Video Files
Oct 3, 2015Having recently updated to Windows 10, I am astonished (annoyed) to discover Windows 10 does not play WMV video files, particularly those created using Windows Movie Maker. There doesn't seem to be very much advice on this on the net and the following is short list of the tried and failed suggestions:
Turning on/off WMP through Control Panel>Programs>Programs & Features>Turn Windows Feature On or Off.Repeating the above then restarting my laptop twice, after which running sfc/scannow at the Command Prompt.Disabling / enabling "Turn on DirectX Video Acceleration for WMV files" in WMP Options.Troubleshooting Fix via Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Troubleshooting>All Categories>Windows Media Player Settings - this just returns the message "Configuration settings might be set incorrectly" - but doesn't expand on what settings are wrong.
I also came across this "FIX: Update to enable DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) of Windows Media Video content in Windows Media 10" at [URL] .....
However after downloading the 'fix' (Download the WindowsMedia10-KB888656-x86-Global-ENU.exe package now.) it doesn't install - instead I get the error message "Not enough storage is available to process this command".
I know that there are third party free WMV players available, but I liked WMP and cannot understand why it won't work on Windows 10.

Nov 27, 2015I've just recently re-installed Windows on my laptop. I had the hard drive set to a GPT format disk since my system supports and previously used UEFI boot, but this install wouldn't allow it so I just went to MBR again..
Is there a way to convert the currently MBR type disk to a GPT format (without losing the current Windows installation) so I can resume using the UEFI format boot? I'd like to later dual boot Linux and I'd pref having a UEFI load over the MBR when that time comes.

Aug 12, 2015Just converted my systems to Windows 10. Working well, so far. I would like to install 4TB disks on a couple of the systems and understand that I need to use UEFI. Looks like my ASUS P8Z68-U GEN 3 MB supports UEFI, but I don't understand how to enable it. The other system has ASUS B85M-E mother board. I've seen some one paragraph descriptions, but they don't really walk me through the process.
1 - Can I upgrade my existing system without a complete Windows 10 reinstall? I have lots of apps installed so I'd like to avoid complete system rebuilds.
2 - Due to legacy use of Mirrored drives, I'm using the Intel RAID stuff, although I no longer need it. Will that be a problem? SSD and other disks are JBOD. I'd like to get rid of that, but I think that does require a complete system reinstall since disabling the RAID wipes the disk.
Looking for step by step process to convert a system to UEFI to support 4TB disks?

Movie Maker Only Plays Audio Now
Aug 30, 2015Was running Win 8.1 and WMM worked great. Upgraded to Win 10 and now all I get is audio when trying to edit a video. Tried converting the file to WMV file and got the same result. Audio only, no video. These videos are shot from my phone then transferred onto my laptop. VLC plays them just fine.
