View 7 RepliesI upgraded from windows 7 to Windows 10 Home 64-bit; this was never an issue on Windows 7. Basically I cannot find a way to keep my desktop in sleep mode. Multiple times it has turned on in the middle of the night, and pretty much every time I leave for the weekend I come back to find it turned on.Windows updates seem to be the issue, but lately I haven't been able to confirm this (though the notification always seems to be there when I login). I get the following when I try lastwake. My guess is that there are no details because I have Windows notify me instead of automatically updating.
I also have wake timers disabled.I thought maybe my mouse or keyboard could be the issue (though I've never had a problem with them in the past). I disabled HID-Compliant Mouse from device manager. And I unchecked the box which allows my mouse to wake my computer. After testing it out, this appears to have had no effect as my mouse can still wake the computer when I click it.
I am using Windows 10, and my start menu stop working for me. I have run the following commend in Powershell.
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}
It fixed the problem temporally, however the problem keep coming back when each time I shut down or restart my laptop.
well Windows 10 installed smoothly starting from inside hub.The computer from my wife installed in the same way, BUT while i can get the STARTSCREEN, she gets the older start that was there in some of the previous builds.
View 9 RepliesI upgraded to 10 from 8.1 on Friday and everything worked great. Suddenly, on the following Monday afternoon Windows began to act up. Either at the desktop or while in a game, suddenly the start menu and Cortana will stop responding. Usually shortly thereafter Explorer will stop responding, as well.
If I hover over items on the start bar - buttons, Cortana search, pinned applications, the system tray - the item will highlight like I can interact with it. But when I click, nothing happens. The start menu won't open, Cortana won't open, applications won't start, etc.
This seems to happen between thirty and forty-five minutes after booting up. I checked the event logs for Application, Security and System; there are critical errors but after spending a few hours following up, those don't seem to be related at all. I did not drill down any further than those logs.
I've attempted the solution at the following link, without any success. [URL] / I've also attempted a system restore to the previous day when everything was still working, but again, no luck.
I just performed a fresh install of Windows 10 10049 on my Surface Pro 3 and now the Start menu/screen does not show when I press the Start button. Looking for regedit to re enable the menu. The problem existed on 10041 but was working initially after the install completed but stopped working shortly afterwards.
View 5 RepliesCurrently Windows 10 isn't showing apps that I already installed, for example, If I type Audacity or Sony Vegas, nothing appears. I have to manually go to the files directory and run the application or make a desktop shortcut (which i dislike) any way to fix?
View 1 RepliesI have been using Windows 10 for some months by now but in the past month i have been experiencing the following issue:
Sometimes when i turn my computer on i can't do anything using my taskbar (such as controling sound and viewing alerts) or my windows start menu (when i click the windows logo nothing happens). This comes back to normal once i restart the system.
As per the image below - why are many of my apps not showing their icons? There's not options to change them and I've tried pinning the original .exe and shortcuts to the app but there is no difference.
View 4 RepliesI have installed Aome hdd manager on my W10 PC and laptop. On the PCs it appears in the start menu and also as an icon in the start menu.
But on the laptop it is not showing, have uninstalled and reinstalled and created a shortcut from the installed .exe file then chose pin to start menu, but still nothing ...
Today I was going to power off my PC and went to start menu and when clicking on the power option it pops up the squeare but its empty. Has no options totally empty.
View 1 RepliesIs it normal for the Start Menu pane to appear as soon as the computer boots up or comes out of hibernate? This happens on mine every time and I see nothing in Settings to change it. As soon as Windows opens, I have to click to close the Start Menu pane. It would be nice to not have that happen. Is there a way to change this, or is it a normal thing now?
View 5 RepliesI've tried:
-Disable power from waking with my LAN, Keyboard & Mouse
-Look at powercfg -lastwake but it shows wake source count - 0
Event log shows power-troubleshooter wake source: Unknown
Event log shows this 1 second after I press sleep: "The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S5). This can result in reduced resume performance."
I thought it was because my time is syncing with network time, but I disabled the sync time automatically
I also checked my power plan to make sure nothing wakes the computer up, and I don't have automatic updates on. It's really annoying when you go to sleep and after about 15minutes the computer boots back up from sleep.

I have apps installed from the Microsoft store on my laptop but they don't show up on the start menu to be able to pin to the start menu. They also don't show up under the "All Apps" area. Is there a way to force apps to show up so that I can pin them to the start menu?
Twice now I've had pinned apps disappear from my start menu - for example, I pinned a game & the notepad to the start menu. Then when going back to the start menu later, they're gone. I have repinned them in a different spot on the start menu & they seem to be staying now - is this normal?
When I use the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon/tool, to remove a USB stick, my internal SSD drive shows as a choice to be removed. How can I get the SSD off this list?
In Device Manager, under Disk Drives, looking at the SSD drive's properties there is no "Removal Policy (i.e. choice of "Quick Removal" or "Better Performance") like the removable hard drive on my laptop has.
Installed win 10 with no problems and it has been running successfully for a good while. Recently I have had some booting problems, not all the time but every so often the boot sits there with a black screen showing ACER and nothing happens. If you sit long enough it will boot with no other problems. I tried looking at the boot section and switched it to normal as it was on something else which I cannot remember.
View 5 RepliesI have had windows 10 since the Insider program started but I never needed to use sleep until now. But whenever I put my computer to sleep it wakes up 30 seconds later. I have made sure that my network card, keyboard, mouse and controllers aren't allowed wake the computer. How can I stop my Computer waking up?
View 1 RepliesSo upgraded from 8.1 Pro. I never had any problems with 8.1 other than the occasional crash here and there, but nothing exceptional. Now every time that I try to wake the computer from sleep I get a stop message that states that it tried to write to read only memory.
I have run memtest86 overnight with 7 iterations and it passed them with no errors. I ran a burn test on my CPU to see if it was overheating, with it never going above 63 degrees Celsius even on the most extreme test.
The crashes are not random. They only happen when I try to wake the computer from sleep. However, it looks like what is causing them is random.
I have never overclocked my computer and I have never touched the frequencies with the memory.
Still trying to figure out what it is that keeps waking up my computer from sleep.
I looked in the event logs and found this:
The system has returned from a low power state.
Sleep Time: 2015-08-30T03:12:34.409741300Z
Wake Time: 2015-08-30T03:30:51.010471500Z
Wake Source: Timer - Windows will execute 'NT TASKMicrosoftWindowsMedia Centermcupdate_scheduled' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.
What I don't understand is why is mcupdate waking the computer if Media Center was removed from Windows 10.
But more importantly how do I stop this from happening?
I have a weird error using Windows 10: I cannot change / adjust brightness at all. I have the latest updates for every drivers, programs and all, not sure why the system does this. Sometimes the screen brightness is 100%, sometimes just 50%. Not sure if the Catalyst Control Center is to blame, but I really need a quick solution, and until now I found none.
View 3 RepliesJust to preface this I have not received a BSOD when this happens so I hope I'm still posting this in the correct location. However my laptop just freezes completely and I have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button until it shuts off) whenever I wake my laptop up from sleeping or even when I cold boot it.
I have checked Event Viewer and I see that I have a couple of recurring errors, the first being:
"DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service lfsvc with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:
{08D9DFDF-C6F7-404A-A20F-66EEC0A609CD}"
Wit the second being:
"The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start."
However I am able to boot into safe mode just fine, even safe mode with networking and everything behaves normally. I can't for the life of me figure out what is going on ...
I forgot to add that I did the upgrade from Windows 7 originally and had the problem so I figured it might have been an issue with the upgrade itself causing some kind of problem so I did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro on it and the issue still existed afterwards as well.
Client of mine called me this morning concerned about waking up his computer and seeing a command prompt open with the following in it ...
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10586]
© 2015 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:UsersNOTREALNAME>net use m: sclientstorage
System error 87 has occurred.
The parameter is incorrect.
C:UsersNOTREALNAME>copy /Y m:dinner.exe
The system cannot find the drive specified.Obviously I have not included the actually user account name. My client is a long-time subscriber to Norton, and I would imagine his system is as tight as Norton can make it.

Whenever I log-in from hibernate or boot, the start interface shows. I had this enabled in Windows 8.1 (start screen), but now I'm on 10 (no start screen) and it still shows.
There is no option to disable it. Is there a registry key to disable this?
P.S. My start screen is normal, not full screen.
I have windows 8.1 and I DON'T want windows 10. It is already downloading. I can see green downloading bar in windows update. I had w10 but it was so buggy that I don't want it again. How do I stop is downloading?
View 3 RepliesAfter months of ignoring your apps for upgrading to Windows 10. I finally said ok and download it to my computer. Now it keeps shutting down intermittently. Even when I am doing important work it shuts down right in the middle. It also keeps telling me that 70% of my drivers are outdated.
