Icon Size And Fonts
Jul 18, 2015
Love the Win 10 preview. My problem is some of my icons are too big or too small. Half and half on the desktop. My fonts are so small I can hardly see them Also my icons are just about touching. Need to space them better. On Explorer the text is fine but when I go to the address bar they are so small I can't see them very clearly. I am running a L34 Ultra wide monitor at 3440x1440.
My second question is I bought an extra SSD hard drive to load the 10 preview on and left all my win 8.1 pro on my bigger SSD hard drive. I want to0 upgrade it to the bigger T-1 SSD EVO Samsung. Will the upgrade know that I want to put it on my EVO SSD?

It took a while but I finally was able to install Windows 10. My question now is, is there is a way to change the desktop icon fonts (name, size, bold, italic)? I right clicked on the desktop but couldn't find anything about fonts.

Win10 update and the start menu icons. I can change the colour but only for all of them to one colour, but can I change individual ones? And/Or better still can I make the small icon in the middle of them occupy the whole tile. I notice some tiles are only the brand icon whilst others have my single chosen colour as a border round a small brand icon. I find it really hard to identify individual tiles in the mass of a single colour. What I would really really really like to do is to see the brand icons be the full size of the tile.

I know I can change the appearances of text and icons in Display settings. But in Win 8, I had the option of only affecting text and icons. Not everything, such as apps.

I wish to know if there is a way to change the font size/style (bold, etc.) of the icon labels ONLY on the desktop screen.
I've tried the Control Panel method (Appearance & Personalization -> Display) that allows me to change the fonts for 'ICONS'. However, this option also changes the appearance of fonts in the directories/filenames, which is not what I want.
E.g. Labels on the desktop with size 12 and bold. Fonts in folders: size 9 and UNbolded (default style).

I just upgraded from W8.1 to W10 and it looks like the icons got smaller by default in the "details" view in the File Explorer.
My problem is that now the overlay icons which are used by TortoiseSVN do not seem to show anymore in the "details" view (when they did use to show in all previous versions of Windows). By overlay icons, I mean things like a green arrow or a red exclamation mark which show up on the icon to indicate that the file is up to date in SVN or has been modified (see screenshots below).not good alternative: the overlay icons do appear in the "Medium icons" or bigger view; (but not for "Small icons"), as well as in the "Content" view.
But none of these is satisfactory to me as I much prefer the "details" view for the things I do -- I like to be able to see both the SVN status at the same time as the details of files, in a reasonable presentation (I don't like the "Content" view, it wastes too much space when you have a lot of files to go through).
I suspect that if there is a way to change the size of the icons in the "details" view, the overlay icons would show up again. The reason I believe this is that the overlay icons do appear in the "details" view when I use the 125% setting in the SYSTEM | Display "Customize your display" setting (which was used by default on my high resolution (1920 x 1080) but small (11.6") laptop screen). See screenshots below:
normal (100%) setting for "details" view in File explorer:vs. 125% setting -- notice that now we can see the green arrow overlay icon for the folder temp_SKH_code:
Question: Is it possible to change the size of the icons appearing in the "details" view of the File Explorer (through a registry hack, or anything)? I am also open to any other alternative which would enable me to see the overlay icons of TortoiseSVN in the "details" view at 100% display setting.
As I use the 125% display setting on my laptop, I do not have any problem there. My problem is with the big external monitor (27" 2048 x 1152) that I use for which a 125% display setting would make everything way too big...For more information about the TortoiseSVN overlay icons and potential issues with Windows, see here. I originally thought that this was my problem (see also this post), until I realized that the overlay icons show fine in some of the views of File Explorer, as well as when using the 125% display setting.

Experiencing problem with the modern apps, where the content of the app is bigger than the actual app window, so it is impossible to use it, because the controls (buttons, input fields, scrollbars are not visible)?
Resizing of the app does not work, as the content is still bigger (its wrongly resizing with the window). Even maximized app is still unusable.
It occurs mainly in the Skype, Mail, People or Calendar apps. As you can see on the Skype screenshot, as soon as app starts it shifts the skype logo to the right, and the whole content is shifted as well.
You can also see the shift bellow, as the Options menu is partially hidden as well.
Skype is impossible to use, because the text input field on bottom is not visible.

My 32GB Windows 10 Home PC (recently upgraded from 8.1) is low on disk space. I deleted Windows.old and I have hibernation disabled. Apart from a few browsers, very little else is installed, yet I only have 11.7GB left?
One reason may be the size of the Windows folder:
Size 14.7GB
Size on Disk 9.91GB
From my calculations, Windows appears to be using the higher figure in determining available disk space.
Why is 'Size' so much greater than 'Size on Disk', can I do anything about it? I have a similar 8.1 machine, it does not have this disparity (12.4GB and 12.3GB).
What would be a normal 'Size' for a Windows folder on Windows 10 Home PC very recently upgraded from 8.1 i.e. with few, if any Windows live updates run ?

I am having repeated problems with text and folders sizes. I had set them up to suit me a while ago, but every now and then they change, apparently by themselves - perhaps after an upgrade? I certainly don't remember making any changes myself.
At the moment the folders I have on my home screen are very small and bunched up into the top left hand corner of the screen. And the text labels to the folders are almost too small for my tired old eyes to read.
How do I get the folders to be bigger, the same size as I had them in Windows 7? And how to I get the text labels to be the same size as they were before? I already have text size set to 175%.
Also, when I open a folder or list contents in some programs the text looks fainter than it should, and has a strange look to it - certainly not the same as when I was running Windows 7; it's much poorer.

With Windows 7 it was possible to change the fonts used by Windows for title bar, menus, popups, etc...This way I could get rid of "anti-aliased" fonts such as Segoe UI that are blurry and use "aliased" fonts such as Tahoma that are sharper and much more readable for me.
That and disabling ClearType give me the right fonts display configuration. But I cannot find this fonts configuration dialog in Windows 10. Where can I find this dialog for Windows 10.

Basically, I cannot seem to install any new fonts at all. Any font I try to install or preview, I will get a message saying "Not a valid font". Now here's the strange part, if I click to view a font from the /windows/fonts/ folder, it lets me view it of course but if I copy that font outside that location, like to my desktop, I will again get the same error, "Not a valid font". I tried logging on the built-in Administrator account as well to see if maybe I could do it from there, but no, same error.

I have a new ultrabook (which I rather like) that came with Win 10 pre-installed. It has a slew of non-Latin fonts that I would like to delete (I have to wade through them all in pick lists on OpenOffice Writer). I have tried deleting them via Control Panel/Appearance/Fonts, with no success.

I just got Windows 10 and installed it last night. When I go into certain programs, my fonts have changed. It changed the default fonts of certain programs to Linkin (it's a custom font I've installed.) For example, the default font for Steam has changed to it. It's real annoying, and I'd like to find a way to fix it.

I just migrated to Win 10 from 8.1 and now I have EDGE instead of IE. When I open the yahoo.com Edge's fonts are screwed up and are set to Alien League font .At the same time fonts are correct in Firefox.
How do I change the fonts in Edge? My reading options , to the left of the Favorites Star icon, are grayed out. If I go to Advanced options I can set my fonts there to light, dark, default, large, medium. There is no option to use another font or change color, like internet suggests. My default language is English/USA.

A month ago I installed ~dozen 3rd party fonts - Stone Sans and Stone Serif (all OTF) - and all was fine. I was able to use them in InDesign and Word. Today, neither program sees the fonts and they aren't listed in the Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Fonts directory, even though I installed them there a few weeks ago! When I go back to the individual font file and install, I'm told (by Win10) that they are already installed. I reinstalled them (just in case) and they still don't show up in the Fonts directory, nor are they accessible in ID or Word. So although I reinstall them, they are still "invisible" - I can't find them or use them. These are fonts I use a lot so I can't just use other fonts. I bought them from myfonts.com so they are legit copies AND I've used them on this laptop (Thinkpad Yoga 14) just a few weeks back.

I am using windows 10 and I am trying to change the default fonts of the OS(I think is Segoe UI). I know that has been changed since windows 8, but I was able to change them so far by modifying the keys in "HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWindowMetrics" in registry(Segoe UI look terrible on my screen and I prefer Tahoma).
Since the last version of windows 10(10586) something changed regarding the fonts. Now the fonts of the right-click context menu in desktop and file explorer are somehow connected with the the fonts of the new black right-click context menu in taskbar and start menu button and the fonts of the control panel and I think the ribbon in file explorer. I came to that conclusion because when i deleted all the keys regarding Segoe UI in "HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFonts", all the fonts of the above "fallback" to Arial and when I deleted only Segoe UI regular they fallback to Segoe UI italic.
As a result modifying menufont key in WindowsMetrics doesn't change the fonts in context menus of desktop and of file explorer. Menufont key still has an effect in menus of third party software like my player(MPC-HC) or in some right-click menus of windows like in the volume and network icons in taskbar. The other keys in WindowsMetrics folder(iconfont, statusfont e.t.c.) still working.
Now my question is obvious, is it possible to change the fonts in the other menus? Is there a separate key in registry regarding those fonts or are they hard-coded in some dll? Why oh why they keep changing these things?

I am a graphic designer, so I have to use helvetica, however, with windows 10 there is an issue. Some sites that use helvetica end up picking a weird version of it. One of them being paypal, uses this awful Helvetica thin compressed.
There are other sites too. Some use a Helvetica heavy oblique. The weird thing is the website itself doesn't use that specific Helvetica font.
