Indexing Options Keeps Reverting To Default
Aug 21, 2015
I have been trying to set my Windows 10 Home 64-bit computer to index only the Start Menu but not anything else (such as IE Favourites, Documents). I know exactly where all my documents are; the only time I use search is something like, I press the Win key, and type in cmd, or ccleaner, etc. So I really only need Windows to index the start menu.
However, every time after reboot, if I go into Indexing Options they will just revert back to default. Is there a way I can make the changes stick?

I've got a problem with my Windows 10 Pro build 10240 because Indexing Options is missing in Control Panel. I also tried opening "control.exe srchadmin.dll" in run but it won't appear.

I don't use Windows search normally, but today had reason to look for Indexing Options in the CP. No sign. Yes, things are being indexed. Yes, the service is running.
So could I invoke Indexing Options some other way?
control.exe srchadmin.dll
- nothing.
Now when I looked for srchadmin.dll, I only found this in Windows.old. Really?
control.exe <path to windows.old...>srchadmin.dll opened indexing options.
is this dll missing a consequence of having done an in place upgrade install?

First, my desktop icons keep reverting back to default positions. I place my shortcuts at custom locations in my desktop and when I refresh, they go back to the left. And whenever I restart my computer, they change back to the default large icon size.
I've searched the web on how to fix this and I haven't been able to find a working solution on this problem.
Then, Edge is now having a problem too. Edge starts just fine but the problem shows up when you type in a website you wanna go to. It will just sit there doing nothing. It's responding but it's just not doing anything... If you click the open new tab (The plus button) nothing happens. When you try to close it, nothing happens too....
I can still browse the web using other browsers (chrome for example) so it must be on Edge's side.I've ran virus scans with ESET and Windows Defender and they haven't found a virus so I'm pretty sure my computer is clean.

After latest update, Windows keeps reverting my apps to default. For example, my default music app/program is Winamp, and after a while I'll just find that it is Groove music again. It is not a huge problem, but you see how it can be irritating. Also, Windows 10 won't recognize some of my usb devices. Mp3 player, and an USB hub. They work in Linux though, so it is not a computer issue.

Before upgrading, I could search for things like Device Manager or Driver Update, and I could locate it, now nothing turns up at all. Nothing for device manager. No results for "driver" I think before it had a result for driver updates by default. There are results for printer, which is nice. I know there should be something similar for Device Manager.

Have been running Windows 10 on a Packard Bell laptop since August and suddenly the login screen password box is disabled on start up. None of the sign in screen options (power options, language, etc.) are enabled. I can't get to any safe mode boot options either so at the moment I'm stuck.

I've got a lot of PDF's in my User directory, which according to the Indexing service has been indexed (and it says it's done and has indexed thousands of files). PDF's are set to search file properties only. When I search for any of the PDF's by name though I don't find them. I've tried rebuilding the index and no luck. According to the Indexing settings (default) it is indexing the users folder.

I suspect that windows indexing might be causing the short, intermittent freezes that I have been experiencing.I want to test it.I went to services and stopped windows search. But I see that the process SearchIndexer.exe is still running.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have encountered an interesting problem. I realized it initially when I would press start and begin to type a program's name in order to run it, as I was doing with Windows 7, but it would not find any results and would prompt me to Google the program. I found it strange but didn't think much of it.
Once I started looking into the issue, I noticed when I go to Indexing Options it says "Indexing is not running." When trying to rebuild indexing, it gives the message about how it will take a while, and then does nothing. So I decided to look into Windows Search.
Windows Search is not and will not run. First: If I go to services.msc and try to start the Windows Search service, it tells me that "The Windows Search service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
So I tried through an elevated cmd prompt: "net start wsearch" gives me error 15:
"C:WINDOWSsystem32>net start wsearch
The Windows Search service is starting..
The Windows Search service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 15 has occurred.
The system cannot find the drive specified."
Finally, and perhaps the strangest thing, one post told me to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search SetupCompletedSuccessfully and change the value to 0. However, the only thing in the registry under Windows Search is a Preferences folder. There are no keys there. So to me it looks as though Windows Search does not currently exist on my computer.
So of course I run sfc /scannow. Unfortunately, it tells me:
C:WINDOWSsystem32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

After upgrading to TH2 I had an issue with windows search. The service wouldn't start at all.
I managed to run the Windows Search service.
I had to delete the Key RebuildIndex and change value of key SetupCompletedSuccessfully to 1.
Now that the search service works I have another problem. The indexing is not working:
In Advanced options the Index Location is blank and the button Select New is grayed out.
When I run the troubleshooter I get : Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories -- Not fixed
The owner of folders C:Program DataMicrosoftSearch and C:Program DataMicrosoftSearchData is SYSTEM.
Administrator and my user name are added with Full Control.
What could be the problem?

I have upgraded to 10. I have Outlook on my task bar and when I open it it opens just fine but if I do something in Outlook like delete an email, it reverts back down to the task bar (it is still open mind you). Same with file manager - say I delete a file then it also reverts to the task bar but again in an open state. I have to click on it again in order to bring it up on screen. My preference is that my app stays on the screen until I have finished with it.

i have upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 recently, and one day my pc crashed (black screen) so i had to force restart it (the button on the tower). After that, my Profile user got corrupted, and several issues (common for the Windows 10) appeared. (Like: Windows 10 start menu taskbar icons wont respond, Calculator no longer works (You'll need a new app to open this calculator) message, and the view in all the folders reverts to (details) no matter where i change it to (i had it on tiles, and every time i close the folder window and i reopen it, its on Details).
Anyway... i got sick of these problems, and the only solution i had was to create a new profile and abandon my current corrupted one. But i really want to avoid this option because its a new start over, and there are too much apps and programs that i have to reinstall, along with all the folders i have to transfer.
So i wanted to try to revert back to windows 7, and then re-upgrade to windows 10. That would fix the corrupted user. But it seems like there is another issue i have here. When i go to settings -> update & security -> recovery -> Go back to windows 7, and i start the process, my pc make 2 restarts and at the second one, it doesnt continue the downgrade, but it boots the Windows 10 again! It wont let me go back to windows 7. It just reboots...

How do I get rid of the password when I start Windows 10? I have successfully done that a few times but it keeps reverting to password protected. I have used windows+R to get to netplwiz.exe and when that didn't work, I went on to regedit and followed the directions at [URL]..... It worked initially but now I'm back to having to use a password after the computer was put in sleep mode. Why does it keep reverting?

I downloaded windows 10 from Microsoft windows website and I installed it but I thought of reverting back to windows 7 and so I did. The windows 7 boot up logo showed up but got stuck in between the boot logo. then the windows startup fixing program would be recommended for me and I did it but failed to fix the boot up error. and i cant even start windows from the safe mode as well. So what do i do to bring back windows 7 back up. and which one windows is good 7 or 8 or 8.1 and sure that i wouldn't wanna go back to 10. so how do i start up windows again?? Yeah i guess i will have to make a bootable USB or DVD drive. I would like to go for usb but not sure how to create one bootable usb drive.

My father hit yes to upgrad his HP Probook 6407b from Windows 7 to Win 10. He did not realize what he was saying yes to.He brought it to me before it finsihed. I got into win 10, but then had issues with HP security software at boot. It would hang at boot, say something about a finger print reader, and then allow me to log in. So I decided to revert back to win 7. that failed. Goes to try a startup repair and it does not work. It looks like win 7 trying to do it and not 10.
Is there any way to recover either win 7 or 10?I tried a win 10 usb drive, but it says the upgrade was previously started in windows, turn off machine and restart, but that fails.

Somewhat unusual situation here. A machine running the latest build (11102) got badly infected by malware. It was such a major attack that I was about to reload the earlier day's image from my Windows Home Server. But it seemed even easier to revert to the previous build, not yet removed from the Windows.old folder. This I did, and everything soon was running fine as expected.
The issue is that the Updates check is not offering Build 11102 again. This isn't a showstopper; I'm sure there will be another newer build soon. But it would be nice to be back up on this latest build, just as all my other Win10 machines are running.

What's wrong with this PC when using Windows 10?This is happens when I'm fresh boot like Shut Down & turn on again/restart the PC.Documents, Picture, Music, & all of them! They keep revert back to without my name & access it to Full Control!I can't save my work, i can't open my VMWare, at least until I'm check the permission on C:Users(My name) & add my name 2 Full Control it. This step need 2 be repeated everytime i restart/turn on my laptop. But this won't happen on my big PC & my parents PC which both PC also running Windows 10 Pro same like my laptop...Saying 2 change the directory to another drive wouldn't be easy since this is "LAPTOP" & I only have 1 HDD & no other partition except C: i'm tired with this laptop & confuse Y this is only happen on my beloved laptop but on my PC it just normal & no need 2 do that complicated things just like this laptop start 2 make me stress.
