Installation :: After Win 7 Upgrade Start Button Doesn't Do Anything
Jul 31, 2015
I upgraded my Win 7 64-bit to Win 10 via the MediaCreationToolx64 download. After the upgrade, when I click on the Windows Start button (or press the Windows button on my keyboard) nothing happens. Also, typing over "Search the web and Windows" doesn't do anything -- my typing doesn't register.

I upgraded recently from w8.1 to w10 using free UG offered by MS. It has been working well until about a week ago, when suddenly one evening (it worked well throughout the day) when I clicked on the start button the tiles did not show up. I have done sfc scan and DIMS/restore health many times; all of them show there are no system integrity issues. I am able to work on my files by going through file explorer. Right click on start button works, but left click doesn't.
About two days ago, I got a notification windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n142txeyewy!microsoft.windows.in. I searched all over for a solution to this problem...and finally in one of the threads in this site I found the following solution provided by USgroupie in August 2015 (13th Aug) to enter the following command in Powershell - Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - I entered this and the system ran the whole process and did come up with a number of red-notifications saying it could not register a number of Apps...
However, the beauty is that after I upgraded to w10, I have not installed any apps except ofcourse the office 2010, adobe reader and such. In fact I have never used the app store...I have an MS account but I use only a local account.

I have four computers running Win10. On two of them the windows "Start" button on the task bar doesn't work. So I can't get to Settings or Apps. I can right click on the Start button and get the "right-click menu". All of the other task bar buttons work.
What's going on with this? It used to work. For a while it didn't work on my laptop, now that is working but on two other desktop computers it doesn't work. All computers have same Win10 version and latest updates (although hardware differs some between them).
Can I add the "Settings" and "All Apps" shortcut I would normally get left-clicking on the Start button to the Start button's "right-click menu"?

Since i've upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, my Start Button, Cortana, Search, App Store, and Action Center have stopped working. I've had no problems installing updates (no hangs). The latest update today (8/11) has not fixed this issue. I cannot roll back to Windows 7 (It says the files are no longer available). I do not want to do a clean install,

I have upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I had problems going into and out of sleep mode which seem have been resolved by installing updates for Intel Graphics. Now I can't get anything to come up when I left click on the Start button. All of the other icons in the task bar will only work with a left click of the mouse, nothing happens with a right click. Also, I did not get Cortana when I upgraded to Windows 10 on this device. I also upgraded another lap top and have Cortana on that one. With all of these problems occurring one after the other, can I reinstall Windows 10?

I'm currently running Windows 7 Pro on a Lenovo ThinkPad.
I have the Get Windows 10 icon showing. When I click it, it takes me to the Upgrade Now button. So far so good.
When I click the Upgrade Now button, I get the starting to download screen with the circle dots. After a few seconds, it then takes me to the Windows 7 'Windows Update' page in the control panel, where it says that 'windows is up to date'. And that's it.
How to get Windows 10 to upgrade? I've done other laptops without issue.

I was having no problems with Windows 10 until the last few days when Windows 10 automatically updated. It seems I have lost the function of right-clicking on the Start Menu button also since this latest upgrade Windows 10 will not recognize my Saietek joystick...I'm not sure if these 2 issues are linked but they both started happening in the last 2 days.

Yesterday I made an update from AVG, which needed the pc to be restarted. I did restarted it, and during the update it gave me an error page starting with " " and after it...my pc wouldn't work anymore. When I started it, it started with the black page showing pc components information and after that another black screen with a _ on the top left of the screen going on and off forever. Then I maneged to put Win10 driver in a Usb drive and I tried to boot from it, and it entered Recovery mode. Here I followed a guide which told me to select "Troubleshoot", then "advanced options" and finally "startup settings". The only problem is...there is no "startup settings".There's everything else but not startup settings, so I can't even try to make it work. How can i make my PC work again?

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 Home (64bit) from Windows 7 Home (64bit). I am having problems that I cannot find a fix to in the common faults section. As in the title, my start button is not working. The action center, settings and task manager are not working also. Other problems I am having are: I cannot open a new user account, I cannot log into my guest account or one of my main accounts and I cannot log into cmd as administrator by right clicking on it in the task bar. I have tried to fix the start menu my opening powershell as administrator and pasting some code into it, but it did not work.

I just did a clean install on W10 and change my bios to UEFI (which it supports.) I'm having this intermittent problem with the Windows "Start" Button in the lower left. It just stops working - left clicking doesn't do anything, although right-clicking does. I just have the basics installed now.
Also, my Windows "Start" key on my keyboard stops working as well. I checked on a keyboard checker and the key itself is fine. I have to log out/back in to get it to work again.

The restore button at the right top corner doesn't work, I can't minimize the window to the required size likewise other window applications. You can't see two word documents at time you are able to see one of them in full display, or otherwise you have to minimize it to the taskbar to see the other. is there solution for this? I couldn't compare two documents (pdf version and word version at the same time)

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox. Tried to download to replace existing Firefox. CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up. Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
- Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry. If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

I just finished an upgrade install of 10 from 7. I tested all programs and only had a problem with Avast and Microsoft Office Project 2007. The Avast problem is repaired.I double click to start the program > the "Office Project 2007" splash screen shows > the spinning orb blinks and it sits there for 15-20 seconds > then a "Configuration in Progress" window comes up > then a "Please wait while Windows configures MS Project" windows comes up > then I get an error : "There is not enough memory to complete this operation" > and that's it.I inserted my installation DVD and tried a Repair. I've tried to start Project in Safe Mode.

Why I cannot run the windows upgrade setup from my USB (G:setup.exe). It is always showing me this error "Use the other installation disc that says 64-bit. When you insert it, Windows Setup will restart automatically."
I also heard that for many people it worked when they run windows setup from "G:sourcessetup.exe" (G: is my USB drive). But when i am trying to open the file it shows Shows setup screen for a few seconds then pops an error "This 32-bit version of Windows cannot be installed to an EFI-based computer. Installation cannot proceed. Use a 64-bit version of Windows to install to an EFI-based computer."
I am trying to run this setup on my HP laptop (Preinstalled: Windows 8 Single Language 64bit) via bootable USB of Windows 10 Home Single Language. I download the Windows10.iso image file via MediaCreationToolx64.exe and created a Media USB disk to install the operating system on the same laptop.
Bootable USB is running setup if i boot my laptop with USB disk. But it will force me to install a fresh Windows 10, which i don't want to. I want to upgrade my current Windows 8.x.
I am sure that i've downloaded correct 64bit version of Windows even i have Windows 10 AIO 32bit/64bit ISO image. Same errors showing in this ISO image too. If i run the "G:sourcessetup.exe" in my PC (which is running Windows 8 64bit) then it runs the process without showing me any error. Why it is happening with laptops only? I also tried to run setup from same USB in my another Lenovo Laptop (which is currently running Windows 8.1 Single language 64bit) but no luck it shows the same both errors.

I downloaded Update to Windows 10 (from windows 7) and everything appeared to go well. Got the "Welcome" screen and chose my "Settings" preferences. Then the screen started flashing and all it shows is a banner across the bottom that shows a blank Microsoft logo in bottom left, next to it a box that says "Search the Web and Windows", a small icon that looks like a printer( midway across the banner, and a small icon that looks like a Menu icon in the bottom right. Then under the cursor is the dreaded "spinning blue wheel" thing. This whole banner and the icons just keep flashing. Been doing this for hours now.
If I do an "Alt+Ctrl+Delete", it pulls up the usual options but when I ask for a "Restart" or "Shut Down" and follow it with a reboot, it just goes through the start up/welcome process and then stalls at exactly the same place.
How do I get my computer back? I can't get online or do anything at all with it. Can't go back to 7 or to history or anything. It's just stuck at this useless screen.

This problem is on a desktop computer (HP Pavilion). When I click the start button, the start menu does not display. Pressing the Windows key on the keyboard also does not take me to the start menu.
I can access the right-click menu on the start button and most of the items on the right-click menu respond correctly when clicked (a few don't. No response from "Search" and "Desktop"). I installed Windows 10 over a month ago and have had no problems until now. Everything was working fine yesterday and to the best of my knowledge I have changed no settings since then.

So, last week I upgraded my Toshiba L850-161 from Windows 7 to 10. Since the upgrade my laptop now starts up as soon as the lid is lifted, without me pressing the power button to start the computer. I am shutting the computer down via the start menu.
I thought this problem may be caused by the fast Start-Up in Windows 10, but my friend also uses this feature on his laptop but he still needs to press the power button to start-up.
I then did some research and found the Panel Open - Power On software included by Toshiba. I checked to see if this was activated but it was disabled by default.
I'm a bit stuck here. According to my settings my laptop shouldn't start when the panel is opened, but it does, and I don't want it to. I'd rather start my laptop the old-fashioned way - with the power button.

I got nearly a week ago a HP laptop that originally had win 8 on it, but installed win 10 right after starting it up. Things are working fine so as the bringing up the start menu by clicking on the start icon. but for the last 2 days now the start button does not pop up anymore when i click on it.
Doesn't matter if i move the cursor over it with the touch pad or with a mouse. also the search icon next to it doesn't react either. all the other icons work without any hassle.
I am still not a 100% familiar with win 10 and laptops, so im not sure what the problem could be. I can right click on it to turn off the laptop but being able to call up the menu with a simple left click should be functional.

My Win10 Home 64 bit computer was working correctly yesterday. Today there was one notification which just showed 'windows.immersivecontrolpanel-cw5n1h2xyewy! microsoft.windows.it', although I am not sure if the last part was something like 'immersive' as the last character looked strange, so could have been part of a letter.
At the same time I had update KB3081438 which required a restart, so I powered down as usual, rather than restarting, waited 20secs and then started up again. Now clicking the start button does nothing except that the icon changes colour. In addition I had Settings pinned to the task bar and now there is just a space where it used to be. I can click on the messages icon in the tray on the right and open Settings that way, but it is quite slow to respond. I have also noticed that a couple of other icons are missing, but there is a space where they used to be.
I did a System Restore to a restore point created yesterday but all that did was mess up Office 2016 which I had to do a repair on. Quick Repair did not solve the problem but the full repair did, although it was a bit of a struggle to get Office to reconnect to my account as it did not like my MS Passport login, and did not accept the key I copied from MSs website.
