Installation :: Cannot Run Check For Updates From The Search Window
Feb 3, 2016
New PC with a fresh W10 Pro installation. After cca 10 days I cannot run anything from search window with the cogwheel or "toothed" wheel on the left including for example "Check for Updates","Windows Update Settings",... It doesn't react to my mouse clicking at all
I have to use "Setting window" (Control Panel).

I have just learned that Samsung have installed a program that blocks Windows Updates. I am trying to get the Windows 10 upgrade notification and came across an article about this. How I can unblock this Samsung install so that I am able to upgrade to Windows 10?

I'm trying to intstall updates for Windows 7 in Control Panel/Check for updates/Install Updates, but Upgrade to Windows 10 is on screen and I can't seem to proceed without the update. I already tried it and I don't like it so backed out. I don't want to upgrade and want it off of my computer. How do I remove it and all the components associated with it? I only use it for personal use, email, Facebook, a few games, etc. and not for business. 10 was too confusing and there's no one over my shoulder teaching me a new system and where all my stuff went.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop from Windows 7. After updating, I'm unable to check on updates. I get:
There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may support: (0x8007042c)
Looking online, I find this has something to do with the firewall but my firewall appears to working fine.

I've been working with a handful of Windows 10 boxes through the various releases of the tech preview to clean installs using RTM media and I've had a recurring problem.Normally, to get to Windows Updates, I click on the Start Button, and type 'updates' and my top result is "Check for Updates" with the gear icon and it says "system settings" directly under "Check for Updates".
So, today, on a new machine i have been setting up, all of a sudden "Check for Updates", system settings, is now simply NOT SHOWING UP in the search. My new "Best Match" option is now JAVA which has it's own "Check for Updates" and it's a desktop app.i know that I can go through Notifications, All Settings and find Update and Recovery...but this is slow. I want to just hit the Start key and type Updates.
how to get results to appear in the search? I cannot believe that I cannot hit Start and just type "Windows Update" and find this thing.
Edit; I just deleted the index and rebuilt it. No improvements.
Edit 2: I just uninstalled Java 8 Update 60, and that didn't resolve the issue either.
Edit 3: I added C:Program Data to the Index locations and this didn't resolve the issue.

It stays on "checking for updates" for hours and never advances. I left it overnight and have tried multiple times. No errors, nothing.

I did some exploring with the search window & set it up in Cortana, but I don't like it & would like to know if/how I can revert/change it back to say, "Search The Web or Computer" vs. "Ask me anything." I don't understand ho The Reminders work; is it only for that day (or I thought you could set up a reminder for a future day/like in a calendar.

I installed Win 10 a few weeks ago and today is the first time that I've turned it on since then. I checked for Windows updates and it found some and appeared to start to download and install them. Then the window disappeared and I checked for updates again. "RuntimeBroker.exe Element not found". What does this mean in Microsoftese?

I installed build 10532 this afternoon and ran into an issue with the search window not having accurate mouse pointing. As a result I rolled back to build 10525 which fixed that issue. My problem now though is that I can't access folders when I key in a search item, for example keying in Documents I can't access the Documents folder in the suggested items.

After the last major update, my computer upon hitting shutdown, displays a pop-up stating that
"The instruction 0x00007FFFFF66CC60 referenced at 0x000000000000 the memory could not be read - Click okay to terminate" ....
And behind the pop-up, windows is indicating that the DDE Server Window is preventing shutdown. Sits there until the okay to terminate is clicked.

when I try to find Windows Update via Windows Search (or via search inside Settings window), no such option is found. It's similar with some other settings.
It worked fine, but now it does not. I've tried rebuilding search index, but with no luck.
how to fix it?

After every successful windows update my machine runs through the same scenario.
1. The sound stops working briefly and then is restored.
2. The Start, Search and System Tray buttons become unresponsive.
Apps on the taskbar and desktop run as normal and the machine functions fine apart from the problems listed above.
Running an SFC scan in power shell finds no integrity violations.
Running a DISM /Cleanup /Restore Health command in powershell completes successfully but doesn't fix any of the problems.
Running the command "Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}" in powershell stalls very early during the "Processing" stage and doesn't resume.
The only thing that works is a System Restore to a date before the newest Windows 10 update but this is an inconvenient solution and the problem inevitably rears its head again after a few days.

Just when I was happy with my installation I error checked my main C: drive with is a Samsung SSD, Windows reported that it had found some errors and it needed to be rebooted to correct them. I rebooted the PC and the check disk did it's repairs and it booted back in to Windows. I noticed straight away that the start menu had stopped working and when I opened Windows Explorer or did anything within it (like right click properties) or any settings windows like control panel it would take for ever. Opening programs like Internet Explorer work fine.
I have tried System Restoring to before I did the drive repair and sfc /scannow and Dism/Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but I still have the problems. The SFC found errors and corrected them but still no Start Menu.
I do have a Trueimage backup from Last Friday which I will have to use if I cannot sort this out. Yesterday due to a on going occasional BSD I had fully uninstalled my Nvidia Geforce Video drivers using a utility that was recommended to me on this forum, I then reinstalled the drivers and it had been fine up until I did the Scan for errors so I don't think it's nothing to do with that.

Under Windows 10 I don't know how to add colors to the window borders of applications open, as that makes them easier to spot when I work with several at the same time. Now the frames are all white or grey.

New Windows 10 user migrating (returning) from OSX.
So far only two issues found on 10130:
Orange active window border: I have this horrible orange colour around the active window. I have changed all the colour settings but both seems to change the active window border.. how to get rid of it. It is really obvious on Firefox for instance with a thicker part at the top tabs section and thinner elsewhere.
TaskBar locking: Occasionally the taskbar will lock and not autohide - even though there are no alerts. Need to sleep/retart to get the autohide to work again...

I am trying to upgrade GENUINE Windows 8.1 PRO x64 to Windows 10 Pro x64 from the ISO I made from the Microsoft RTM files. I am upgrading from within the 8.1 OS and choosing the option to keep "nothing" of my settings and personal files.
I have two problems.
The first is that the installation asks for a product key. On the other hand, when I upgraded my Windows 7 machine to 10 from within the OS it didn't ask for a product key. Why do I need to provide the product key to upgrade my 8.1 system, but not my 7 system?
Second problem is that I can not upgrade from 8.1 PRO to Win10 PRO. When I put in the general product key for the Win10 HOME edition the install proceeds, but it does not take the other (different) product key corresponding to the Win10 PRO version, even though it should. Why can't I go 8.1 PRO -> 10 PRO?

Wow yet another problem that has hit me since my conversion to windows 10, this morning before i left for work booted up my pc and it got as far "configuring window do not switch off computer" I sat there wathcing it get to 100% and it rebooted itself only to repeat message and all I now get is a boot loop to this message and nothing else.
Getting into the repair window is a task in its own having to switch off pc while windows loading a few times before it get to the repair bit as I have tried all the F4,5,6,7,8 route and nothing and not wanting to have to go into bios everytime to change boot sequence find switcing off pc is best.
Now that windows install all updates and one has no say on the matter looks lik this is going to be a problem becasue if you get a bad update what do you do because updates dont ask you it downloads to pc without your permission but getting back to my problem how to prevent this from happening again because I am tired of having to restore the pc to a previous restore point.

I am really frustrated trying to install Windows 10 from Windows 7 Home Premium in my MSI S6000 laptop. I click on the "Get Windows 10" icon and a window pops-up saying: "Your free Windows 10 upgrade is here!" I click on the button "OK Let's continue" and that is the end of it. I see the wheel rotating for an hour or two and nothing happens. Nothing gets downloaded and no other window pops up. I have pops up allowed, and everything else is at the default settings. What is wrong with y Windows 10 upgrade?
