Just wanted to get a feel on this before i dig into it. I have a dell laptop (school) that i got a SSD for. I also have a clevo laptop at home (main computer), and it has two 2.5" driver bays. Could i install my current dell HDD and the new SSD into the clevo and clone them using this machine?
View 6 RepliesI have a few laptops, all of them are the same specs except for a few with a different GPU. All of them run the exact same software. I'm planning to upgrade them all manually to 10 first to register the machine, then create an image so in case a drive goes belly up, I'll just restore it from the image created instead of installing all the software one by one. I'm going to take one machine, sysprep it then keep a copy of that image for restoring on to the other machines.In this case would it just reactivate properly on the newly cloned machine?

My new computer (an ASUS) currently has Windows 8.1. I intend to upgrade to Windows 10 before I do anything more. I will move the old Windows elsewhere before cloning if that is possible.
I have the SSD installed physically but it is not formatted or anything. I intend to use the Samsung Data Migration tool to do the clone. During the clone, the SSD will of course not have the drive letter "C". After the cloning, it must have the drive letter "C", correct? I know we can assign drive letters in Disk Management. I am familiar with partitions and I know that the boot drive/partition is marked as "Active".
Can I re-assign drive letters in Disk Management and delay the change until the next boot? This is just a guess, but it makes sense that the feature might exist. In other words, after the clone, can I change the drive letter ("C") of the current drive to something such as "T" and the SSD drive's letter to "C" and then the change will be effective upon the next boot? The hard drive has a second partition that is empty and is the "D:". It will be confusing for others to have the SSD partition as "C:" and the first partition some other letter and the second partition as "D:" but I understand and I am the only one that will use it. That is a minor detail.
I do not intend to use the old Windows after the successful clone unless I need to remove the SSD for return to ASUS. My new computer had a bad motherboard when I received it but I hope I do not need to return it again.
I know that some people will suggest that I do a fresh install. (I see: Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First - Windows 10 Forums.). I want to avoid doing that if possible. I am not sure that I can install everything else that ASUS installs but hopefully that is possible. If however I can simply swap drive letters after the clone then that should be the simplest solution.
If so, what are my options? This HDD came from HP w/Win 7. I upgraded it to Win 10 but would like to clone it to the SSD for the speed increase.
View 2 RepliesI don't know what to do. I've tried everything. I am literally about to break down crying. I've been at this for six and a half hours now. I've completely run out of space on my 320GB hard drive, and I've been trying to clone to my new 1TB since I got home from work.
I've currently got windows 10 on a small HDD that I need to transfer to my newer, bigger drive. I do have multiple hard drive slots, as I need the OS on the big one. Don't ask why, it's complicated. Point is, I can't use the little one anymore and I need the OS as well as my files on the big guy.
I've tried 2 different cloning programs, each one taking ages to finish copying. The problem is, everywhere I go says the reason I have blackscreen when I try to boot is because I'm missing the 100MB hidden boot partition. But it's sitting right there.
I've tried booting with only the new HDD installed, tried 100 boot and BIOS settings, different slots, completely formatting the new HDD and starting over from scratch with the same program and a different one.
I've even tried booting from a recovery disk. That won't work either, and gives me the same black screen with a single horizontal bar blinking in the top left corner.
Background: We have purchased 14 HP EliteBook 820 laptops (which come with Windows 8.1 downgraded to Win 7 preinstalled) to rollout within our company and my usual method for laptop rollouts is to setup one with our corporate apps etc, run SysPrep and then clone the hard drive to the rest of the laptops.
This has worked fine in the past with Windows XP and 7 but with the introduction of the free upgrade to Windows 10 which we want to take advantage of it has produced a problem.
Problem: I have setup one laptop and gone through the free upgrade to Windows 10 then installed our required apps etc, run SysPrep, shutdown and cloned the hard drive to another hard drive to go into the next laptop (same model) to rollout.
Windows is then unable to activate giving error code 0xC004C003 meaning the key is blocked.
Because the laptops have OEM Windows licences pre-installed this means that I don't have a product key sticker; it is embedded in the BIOS.
I am assuming that at the point of upgrade the Microsoft servers check the key and add it to their list of 'OK' keys to allow the upgrade.
When the cloned hard drive is placed into another laptop the key embedded into the BIOS is not OK and Windows does not activate? I've tried the slui program to remove the licence but that just removes the key and asks for a new one. I have also tried doing the clone of a clean install after upgrading. I have tried speaking to HP and Microsoft but each one said speak to the other.
Currently my only option is to setup one laptop with the OEM Win 7 or 8.1, install our Apps, do the SysPrep and cloning and then upgrade each one individually at the end of the OOBE experience. This will be more time consuming when rolling out and rebuilding.
Im having trouble with my Windows 10 clean install. Once it installs it says it is resetting to complete installation, after it resets it will not load to the windows screen. It just loads bios and hangs with a prompt flashing on a black screen. I then used DISKPART to clean the disks and tried a new install in MBR and again in GPT formats, still the same result. What am I doing wrong? Are the RAID drives causing the problem? The machine was running fine before. I had a free upgrade from 7 and did the process of upgrading to 10 first before the clean install to activate the product. That went fine. I ran the hardware diagnostics from the BIOS and it failed the boot test with error code BIOHD3. Warning: No active partitions.

Yes I'm a Windows Insider and should get the release version of Win 10 on the 29th based on my usual fast "flight" fairly quickly for my Win 10 preview installation. Based on my email address will that give me a reasonably early download of Win 10 on my Win 7 computer? If not can I use the Install.esd to make a release version iso for my Win 7 computer?

I recently decided to build my own computer, however to my horror, Windows 10 is still not working and has caused my computer to randomly cut to black screen, not turn on when the power button is pressed and to restart itself only to cut out 5-10 seconds after powering on.

If I have a working Windows 10 on a HDD (or SSD), and I'm ready to junk that computer and want to move that "licensed" version of Windows 10 and the HDD to a new machine, how does Microsoft deal with the hardware ID since the ID is based on the old hardware and not the new?

View 4 RepliesI have win 10 pro installed on a Samsung 850 pro SSD. In Bios it lists Windows Boot Manager as the #1 option. I selected Samsung ssd as my #1 option, saved and exited. Computer will not boot. Says No OS found-insert media and restart. Did that a couple times. No Boot. Set Bios back to Windows Boot Manager. Everything runs fine. Also Sata controller set to AHCI. Is this normal for Windows 10? In Device manager my storage controller says Microsoft storage space controller.

The things I heard about Windows 10 'fusing' itself to one's hardware is relevant only to the OEM version - am I correct?
I lost power throughout the night and my desktop keeps coming up with "your pc did not start correctly". Restarting it won't work either. When I troubleshot and do a "reset this pc" it keeps coming up with "there was a problem resetting your pc" no changes were made". Nothing is working for me.

View 9 RepliesI tried to install Windows 10. At first, it worked! I was all happy, so went on to login. Once I logged into my microsoft account, I was greeted by a blackscreen where I could move my mouse around. so, I rebooted, shift+clicked Restart, and got to the troubleshoot menu. From there, I clicked on "Reset My PC," since it appeared to be the only solution. It rebooted my computer, and suddenly it said something like "Windows restarted or shut down unexpectedly. Please press OK to continue the installation." I clicked OK, and it just rebooted and said the same thing, so I looked up a tutorial, which said to change something's value in regedit from 1 to 3. This sure made the "Windows restarted unexpectedly" go away, but now it just restarts repeatedly, as if it DID pop up, and I pressed OK. I tried multiple things, and I really don't want to send my PC to a repair.

View 2 RepliesI got this new pc for christmas which came with 8.1, which I hate. So I did the free 10 upgrade but now run into many new problems. Many of my favorite programs are not yet compadible. Discs burned from previous operating systems and usb drives formated for previous OS will not boot. Simply freezes computer when I insert them O.o. Also had some random crashes and I just wanna downgrade to 7 and be done with this so I can finally start using my new pc.
I enter a windows 7 64 bit ISO burned from a friend and again it just freezes the computer on load. So eventually I borrow my friends genuine windows 7 64 bit disc, and now when I try to load it gives the message "cannot install 32 bit version on ECF system" or something like that.Would I have better luck downgrading to 8 and then trying to get 7? Why is 10 recognizing this genuine 64 bit disc as a 32 bit version??
Have just bought a new computer (Acer E1 572 with I7-4500U processor, running Windows 8.1). Tried to download Windows 10 and at the end of the process the computer shut down and now refuses to restart. When I press the start button the small blue light on the front of the computer flashes 5 times - and that's it. I am not very technically savvy (understatement) and if I had made even a quick glance at this forum and realised that there were so many problems with Windows 10 I would have stayed with Windows 8.1, at least untiI most of the initial bugs were taken care of. What can I do to get my shiny new computer back and running on Windows 8.1?

From my internet reading it would appear that virtualization might be invovled and I've managed to install a virtual machine on the new computer, however, I've now hit a brick wall ..
The vhdx image file is on an external HD together with bu's of my data files (just to be on the safe side)
So yesterday I installed Windows 10 on my computer via Windows update. (First went here Home page - Windows Insider Program and followed the steps) It installed normally, after it was done I got the login screen.
I typed my password and pressed "next" but my computer just froze and restarted and kept doing it.
I re-installed Windows 7 today, will probably try Windows 10 later, but not currently.
So my computer has been kinda laggy and running slowly so I figured I would do a clean reset of Windows 10. It noted that it would take hours, which was fine. However about an hour into it, it said there was an error resetting. It then restarted the computer however I can't get passed the "ASUS" start up logo. It goes black and then loops. I hit F9 but none of the options work for me - automatic repair won't work because it says my computer doesn't have an administrator and when I try to reset again from there, it tells me that "a required drive partition is missing." I don't have the greatest knowledge on computers, so I really don't even know what that means.
I've read that I might have to reboot from a USB - how would I go upon doing that? Is there something I can download on the Microsoft website? I don't have a key because the computer came pre-loaded with Windows 8 and I upgraded to Windows 10 for free last year. Will I still be able to boot from a USB?
All of the previous versions of Windows that I ever set up, you were able to set auto-start with no password. Inow have Windows 10 and can't for the life of me find a way to do this. Is it not available option now in Win 10 ?
