Fast Startup With Dual Boot Separate Drives

Jul 26, 2015

I've been reading that having fast startup on in windows 8/10 can cause issues with dual booting systems with other operating systems installed like windows 7. I have windows 7 on one ssd and going to have windows 10 on a second. Will i have to disable fast startup in windows 10 or any other type of hibernation settings.

Dual Booting On Two Different Hard Disks

May 20, 2015

Okay, I have Windows 10, and Macbook. My PC, have 2 hard disks, one is of 500 GB ( Seagate ) and one is 3 TB Western Digital (Black).

Machine is loaded with:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 3 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 770 2GB DirectCU II Video Card

I am planning to Install Mac OS X on 500 GB one and keep Windows 10 on 3 TB one. So is it okay if I will just remove the 3 TB Hard disk, and install Mac OS X on it ? 500 GB hard disk have files of Windows 8.1 already. But it is not my primary hard disk.

Getting Error Message When Booting With External Hard Drives Attached

Sep 11, 2015

Since upgrading to W10, My puter will no longer load when I have my external hard-drive attached. When I switch on my puter, I get a black screen with the message 'Non-System disk or disk error, Replace and strike any key when ready'.

When I reboot with the ext HD disconnected the reboot is fine and W10 loads no problem. If I reconnect the Ext HD while the puter is up and running, no problem, and both the computer and now attached external hard drive function perfectly.

I have tried reformatting the external hard drive but I still have the same start-up problem when the ext HD is attached on start-up.

Installation :: Dual Booting With Ubuntu 15.04?

Oct 15, 2015

I've just built my desktop and I'm trying to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04.

I've already partitioned my hard drive, and installed Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04, but I'm trying to get to a place where I can choose what OS to start whenever I turn on my computer.

At the moment, I can run both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04 if I go into the BIOS and rearrange my boot priorities, but that's just a huge hassle. Is there a convenient way to choose at startup, similar to how Windows 8 had this?

Installation :: Dual Booting With Windows 8.1?

Jul 17, 2015

I have the ESD for Windows 10 built 10240 . I need to clean install it on a different drive and dual boot it with Windows 8.1. Can I simply boot with the 10 ISO (in UEFI boot) and clean install it on a different drive?

Would I then be able to dual boot it with my activated 8.1 copy?

Installation :: How To Install Win 7 On Second HD For Dual Booting

Feb 10, 2016

I have Windows 10 installed on HD1 (Samsung) and working will. I had a second HD2 (WD) with Win7 installed for a dual boot operation. For some reason, I could never successfully boot into Win7. Out of frustration I decided to format the Win7 drive and start over.

The problem now is I cannot install Win7 on the HD2 drive. When I choose F12 on boot up and select the WD disk, a screen appears saying "Windows Boot Manager" It instructs me to insert my Win7 install disk an reboot.

Next steps:

I insert the Win7 install disk and reboot using F12 to select the WD disk. The "Windows Boot Manager" screen appears again with the same instructions as above! If I reboot again and do nothing, the system will boot to Windows 10.

My question, how to install Win7 on the WD disk and then setup a dual boot operation?

Installation :: Dual Booting Set Up In System Configuration

Nov 5, 2015

Just getting to grips with W10 and noticed that dual booting can be set up in System Configuration-boot. This was the case in XP, I think or was a previous version. Bit late now as I have easybcd on W7 drive. Before you ask I have never had a successful install where W10 finds W7 and displays that fancy box on start up.

Installation :: Dual Booting - SSD Included In System

May 17, 2015

I've decided that I would like to dual boot Windows 10 TP (I know im late to the game)

Now ive done dual booting before, but I was wondering if its any different, as my system has change to include a SSD which just has windows 7 and a HDD with my files.

If I just partition my HDD to a smaller size and install windows 10 on the other half of that partition will that work and not affect windows 7

Customization :: How To Ungroup And Separate Removable Drives In This PC

Aug 24, 2015

How to ungroup and separate removable drives in This PC?

it shows removable drives, optical drives and hard drives in one group together. This is one of the the worst changes made to Windows. Sadly, the OS does not offer you any option to the ungroup drives logically so local drives are in one group and the rest in another.

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Partition Into Two Separate Drives

Oct 31, 2015

I did once manage to Partition in to 2 separate drives the Disk 2 - New Volume (G:) external drive

However I can not repeat that and instead I keep getting it split in to 3 partitions?

I only want 2 partitions 1 x 1TB + 1 x 2 TB

I am doing this on this system (Windows 10, 32 bit) Home edition, because my ACRONIS Total Image 2016 won't recognise a 3 TB drive.

BTW: I have two other registered Windows systems 1. Windows 10 Prof. & 2. Windows 7 Prof. both using 64 bit, that I don't have problems with.

Upgrading / Installing And Dual Booting?

Sep 16, 2015

At some point in the future I aim to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but I'd like to keep Windows 7 on a dual boot or something similar (if possible) for convenience and in case of compatibility issues. However I also want to get a new motherboard and CPU, and from my limited understanding of operating systems that would cause problems for my OS and stored data and such. So I have decided to ask some questions.

1. Is a dual boot with Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows actually possible, and how would I go about setting it up?
2. Would it be possible to dual boot the OS's across separate SSDs?
3. Is it possible to synchronise the desktop across both OS's?
4. If I have to do so, would deactivating and reinstalling a copy of Windows 7 as simple as following most of the steps in this guide?
5. If I have to deactivate and do a clean install of Windows 7, would it wipe all the files on that drive?
6. Would reinstalling Windows 7 be as simple as installing as normal and then entering my product key with no complications?
7. Is there anything else I should know or do before I start uninstalling and clean installing stuff?

Dell XPS 8700 - Booting From External Hard Drive

Nov 13, 2015

I recently bought a Dell XPS 8700 running Win 10. I still have my old computer, a Dell Inspiron 530 running Win XP Home 5.1.2600. I made a clone (i.e., a bootable drive) of the old Inspiron 530 hard drive on a Seagate Expansion portable drive with a USB interface. I want to plug the Seagate drive into my new XPS 8700 and boot from the Seagate drive, thus starting up and running Win XP and accessing all my old apps and files. When I am done, I want to restart the XPS 8700 and start up Win 10 as usual. My XPS 8700 with Win 10 is running just fine.

My purpose is simply to physically throw away my old computer and yet continue to use my old computer in a virtual sense by "hosting" the same functionality on my new computer. I realize I will need to restart my computer when moving from Win XP back to Win 10, and I realize I can't within one environment access files in the other environment. My immediate problem is I cannot get to a screen that lets me boot from my Seagate drive. (I might run into other problems after that.)

Hard Drives Are Wiped

I have 2 computers (asus and acer) that came with Windows 7 Home. The product keys are on the side of the computers. The hard drives have been wiped and are blank. How can I update to Windows 10? My guess is I have to download and install Windows 7 with the keys on the computer and then update, but where can I download a copy of Windows 7 from?

Networking :: Can't Share Hard Drives

Nov 15, 2015

I have two computers both now running Win 10. One is hard wired to my router, and the other is on wireless. I am not using Homegroups....just the old method of work groups, which used to work pretty well. (I also have some XP computers.) The computer on wireless can see the C drive on the hard wired computer, but not vice versa. I shows the C drive but when I click on it says it can't be accessed. I have set all the permissions for the C drive on that machine, giving full access to "everyone". I went to the Security tab and set the parameters to allow access for authenticated users. (When it runs through the files it frequently hangs with an error message, but continues when I hit return.)

Hard Drives Not Listed In PC Since Upgrade

Sep 16, 2015

Since upgrading from 7, none of my hard drives are listed. The entire category is missing, all I see are Folders. The drives are there and accessible if I explicitly navigate to them, such as "C:", in which case my path becomes: > This PC >SYSTEM (C:), and I can explore the drive. They are all properly listed in Disk Management, where I can choose to open an explorer folder on them. The ones configured as shared still appear on the network. But none of several internal and external drives are listed in This PC.

Hard Drives Missing In Windows

Oct 4, 2015

I recently have noticed that windows 7 and I just upgraded to windows 10 via the free upgrade, will not show all my hard drives ? On start up they show for a few seconds then go away. Both are WD. One is 500 gb, and the other is a new 1TB. I am not sure when this started but noticed it just recently when I tried to access my pictures on the 500gb drive. I have tried just about everything here with no luck. The 500gb drive does have a windows vista OS on it but the 1 TB is just for back ups etc. All was fine some time ago but now, all I see is my SSD with my OS and an external drive. Also the Hard Drives do show up in Bios. I might have found a reason this happens. Most likely on a windows and / or driver update. On my system the drivers for these missing Hard Drives you can see them in device manager by selecting view / show hidden devices.

USB Hard Drives Perpetually Locked

Nov 28, 2015

After shutting everything that could conceivably be causing the problem down, Event Viewer now says that "System" at PID 4 is preventing any of my USB 3.0 hard drives from ejecting. Now this is strange, because it should not be doing this. I have no applications open, no file explorer windows open, and I closed out every background task that I could.

I do not believe I have a virus. MalwareBytes shows up clean, and there has been no indication of anything wrong.

This issue also occurred in Windows 8.1, and I didn't solve it there either.

Bcd Error After Swapping Hard Drives

Aug 13, 2015

So last night I finally got around to putting windows 10 on my ssd and swapping windows 7 to the back burner on my computer. I would like to point out that I am fairly tech savvy and have built and repaired my fair share of computers in the past three years, this should have been routine. But sadly me being the bright and clever bastard I am not only forgot to specify an os specific partition copy so the hidden files would be copied but also forgot to format my ssd completely to remove bootsect before transferring windows 10 to it...

So now I have a little bit of win7 in win10 and vice versa so now in boot manager the operating systems are backwards...and that's not even the bad part, neither of them boot properly, they both load but not further than a base colour with a version number in the bottom right(one slip up and I'm in over my head) so I tried just booting my ssd no other harddrives connected and now it throws a bcd error...until I plug it into my vista build and then it runs buttery for the hdd it's the opposite no dice on my vista build but all clear on my main build(with no other harddrives that is)

I would like to resolve this with minimal data loss (most of the data Is on my win7 drive but I don't want to reinstall).

External Hard Drives Not Showing Under This PC

Jul 29, 2015

My Maxtor external hard drive is not showing under This PC, but is under Device Manager. Updating the driver comes back as driver is up to date. Changing Bios setting between UEFI and Legacy do not make a difference. Using a different USB port does not make a difference.

I can get full access to the drive if I boot up LinuxMint from a USB stick.

Microsoft says this is a manufacturers driver problem.
Acer says this is Windows problem.
