I made a thread here some time ago in trying to create a System Image (Sys Img) using a 3.0USB 1 TB Toshiba External HDD. My issue is it runs then stops with errors and creates blank folders in the ExtHDD.

I'm using windows 10. I have backed up my photos to onedrive. The photos now show up, in file explorer, both on my C drive and in the onedrive folder. Does this mean I now have 3 copies of the photos - the original, the one in the cloud and a synched copy?I have run WinDirStat and it does look like I have two copies of my photos locally. Can I use onedrive to just store a backup without creating an additional local copy?

I'm having a problem with Windows 10. I just created a local account then poof, taskbar & start menu is not working, search button won't open, I can't see the date and time, and no access at the PC settings. Is it because I'm not connected in the internet when I created a local account?

I've had this machine since Oct 5. On Oct 14 it started BSOD, particularly on wake up. Event log shows about 5 reboots. I've turned off the sleep while on AC, told it not to put the HD to sleep, and waiting to see if that fixes it. I can get a full refund or exchange on this box through Monday.

It's possible you might have the contents of the ISO but not the actual ISO image itself on HDD.It's still possible to create a bootable USB using purely MANUAL commands for this example assume Disk nr is 7 and the USB stick is on drive H. The files from the ISO are in say folder WINDVD on drive E here's what to do.
1) open CMD as administrator
2) DISKPART
3) LIST DISK
4) SELECT DISK 7 (remember our example above)
5) CLEAN
6) CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
7) ACTIVE
8) FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK
9) EXIT (don't close the cmd prompt though)
10) CD E:WINDVDBOOT (again from example contents of ISO are on drive E)
11) BOOTSECT /NT60 H:
12) After 11) finishes - takes 1 sec approx. copy the entire contents of directory WINDVD to the USB stick as is - copy contents in same folder layout as on the disk - don't have WINDVD as the high level - copy CONTENTS so ist folder on USB stick will be BOOT.
13) now you've got a bootable USB.

I have upgraded my Windows 8.1 system to Windows 10 through the Windows update app and have created an installation media USB stick. I want to clean install, something I am very familiar with, but not since the new uefi, gpt, legacy etc. that I'm not familiar with. If I do a clean install and delete the entire disk, Windows will create the partitions and install the necessary "data" to run the computer correctly? I don't need to save the data on the hidden partitions that are present now?

I am trying to backup my data (not a system image) to an external hard drive Although I have succeeded in backing files up the system does not work automatically (as it implies it will) and the only work around seems to be to select an alternative drive each time.
In addition if I use File History to attempt a backup the system appears to write to the external hard drive but nothing gets recorded. There is sufficient space for the data (12GB - hard drive total size 120GB) so I do not think it is lack of space.

I just upgraded from Windows 7 home premium to windows 10. When the automatic backup that I had scheduled under windows 7 ran, I got an error. When I try to run backup manually, I get an error saying that I don't have enough space. My C drive is a 745 GB drive with only 128 used. My backup drive is one TB with 438 used and 656 free. I would think that would be enough space. It always worked under windows 7. What do I do?

I recently set up a Homegroup on a Win10 laptop so I can see another PC on the network. That PC is running Win8.1, and I would like to use it for file backup. The devices are visible on both ends of the network and have connectivity, but when I choose to use the File Backup function from the laptop, nothing transfers and eventually I have to restart because of no response from the system. Also, my browser will stop working. I have added the PC as a network location and specified the location for backup, but is has locked up twice now. Could this be a routing issue? I previously ran the auto backup feature to a memory card, but need more space.

This actually started back in build 9926. The left third of my screen shattered, so I moved the taskbar over to the right edge, and as soon as I did Cortana just stopped working. Her symbol changed to the generic search magnifying glass, she won't open when prompted, and neither will her settings in the settings app.

Microsoft states that Cortana is available in the UK. My region and language (including input) are set to UK, which is where I currently am, and yet I am unable to enable Cortana. In the 'Cortana and search settings', I get the message "Cortana isn't supported in the region and language you've selected". I have configured my microphone for speech input.

just done a fresh install with the latest iso available. here it is the problem using search/cortana... (honestly i didn't care in the past, so i don't it's a normal beahaviour) -loggin in as administrator i can use the search and find settings like "system restore" or "personalize" -loggin in as limited user, no matter if local account or microsoft account, i can't search for settings and i get the message "incomplete" on top of the window... but all documents, images, start menu entries, etc. are showed perfectly. i googled around, but i couldn't find what happens to me. solutions are for completely broken search service. even create a new account or recreate the index didn't work.. is it normal for limited users?!? bug?!? i don't want reinstall again

Ever since I installed Windows 10 my Seagate Free agent back-up drive doesn't work. When I try to back-up my computer the Seagate manager says there's no drive connected. When I look on the file explorer the Seagate drive shows. but the the Seagate manager still shows no drives connected.
Is this a compatibility issue with Windows 10, or am I missing something?

Discovered I can't turn on 'Location'.
1. I can click the 'Change' button in Privacy, Location, but nothing happens. ('Location is off' is displayed)
2. 'Location' is greyed out in the Action Centre
3. The Network Location Service is running
(I've tried stopping, starting it, restarting the PC).
then I discovered
4. Cortana does not appear in Toolbars (rt click taskbar)
5. The response to clicking Cortana in the start menu is to go to Store, Downloads and updates.
(Cortana was working a while back- I thin I turned it off at some point)
I have changed some things in Privacy, and tried to undo those. Everything else seems fine. I'm guessing I've turned sthg off or changed an option somewhere.

Start Menu doesn't work upon clicking. Task Manager works when system first boots but then goes into "Not Responding" mode, doesn't work either. Cortana/Search doesnt work. Currently cant click icons on desktop either. Right click doesn't seem to be working either
Third party apps like games seem to be working fine oddly enough.
Tried a system restore, system restore failed. Tried reinstalling windows apps via powershell, command ran for a really long time, before I got the "Server Execution failed" message. Have tried creating a new user, new user creation via "Manage User Accounts" tends to hang again. Have tried running below from cmd, returned with no errors.
=> sfc / scannow
Have run a malware check, returned negative.
Have run the windows troubleshooter, got a message "Fix or work around emerging issue 67758"
Getting this message right now:: ms-settings personalization-background => This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
I haven't performed a clean install of Windows yet on my system, as I am trying to determine if there's any way to fix this problem without formatting my disk.

I believe that is what is causing the 'critical error'. I uninstalled the software and upon reboot my start button and cortana were working perfectly again. Now I'm sure you all know how to uninstall software on your PCs but it may not work in normal mode with the critical error as it didn't with me. Therefore I uninstalled in safe mode. Incase you arent familiar with how to access safe mode on windows 10, heres how: You press ctrl+alt+delete, and in the bottom right hand corner you click the power button. Before you click 'restart', hold down the shift key until the next screen is displayed (blue). Then click troubleshoot, advanced options, start-up settings, restart. Once it restarts, press the F4 key, and when it restarts you will be in safe mode. Now just do the normal thing to uninstall avast and then reboot following the installation and it should be fixed!

The Cortana button shows up on the task bar, but when I click on it to access the "Run" feature (Which should have stayed in the Start Menu), nothing happens. The window doesn't open anymore. This just started happening a few weeks ago.
Also, I cannot add new desktop wallpapers. I'm stuck with the current one, and if I try to add a new one, my desktop turns black.

I upgraded to Win 10 a week ago and after a long updating session was well pleased with the OS - everything seemed to work normally and much faster than before.
However, a day after the last updates were installed (KB3081449 and KB3081448) my normal screen appeared with a boxed message ;
'Cortana and Start Menu aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. Sign out now'.
Signing back in does not fix the problem. I cannot access the Start Menu or Search box. I still have my normal (Win 7 style) screen that luckily still has my shortcuts and I still have WiFi access. I have to shut down using the power button.
I don't know how to access the installed updates (There appears to be no access via Control Panel) and restore options only allow a 'revert to Win 7' - is there a Restore option available that takes you back a few days?
