When I go to repair Windows 10, I put in the install disk, it goes to the windows logo with the dots spinning around at the bottom then to a black screen. I left this for 1 hour and it did not progress. The disk also seems to have stopped spinning. The disk works in other computers.
View 1 RepliesJust upgraded my bro-in-law's HP Pavilion desktop from 8.1 to 10. It's got an AMD processor, but I don't know which one exactly...probably one of the lower level ones. It was a refurb from Fry's, purchased a couple of months ago. It was running 8.1 just fine.
The upgrade process to win 10 went smoothly, got the pretty picture and the standard login screen, entered login info and got a series of messages welcoming me to win 10 and that the system was being configured. Then a message that said the install was "taking a bit longer than usual" and to wait a while longer. Stayed on this for about 10 minutes, and then screen went black with a cursor. And it's been that way for the past two hours. Just leaving it for now hoping it will magically come up with the win 10 desktop, but so far no love.
I tried updating from 8.1 to 10 from the iso and after a few reboots it just hangs at a black screen, what can i do now? Should i just reboot?
View 9 RepliesIt seems like it is not detecting my second HDMI monitor. I did see that this was an issue previously resolved, but my predicament is a bit different. I use my second monitor as the primary due to the laptop monitor not working. As it is, I have been sitting for close to an hour on a black screen due to my main monitor not being picked up and no way to visually walk through to make it my primary again... If that is even the only problem. Are there any ways I can switch to my main monitor (2nd monitor) worth no visual representation whatsoever?
View 2 RepliesI was installing windows 10 (8.1 before) on my Dell inspiron 15 7000 series (7537), and it progressed to restarting after the installing drivers step, but after the restart and going through the dell startup screen, everything went black. The HDD light is stuck on and not flickering like it normally does.
There is no cursor or anything on the screen, it's just black. I waited for an hour and nothing changed, so I thought maybe it was frozen, so I restarted the computer via hard reset, which took it to a "attempting to recover update" screen, but after a few seconds on that screen it went immediately back to the black screen.
Its been about 30 min since that hard restart and its still black, HDD light still on, and nothing seems to be happening.
How do I reset a PC with windows 10 installed to where it asks for a boot disk on a black screen or something like that? not where I reset it and windows is still installed, I need a reset it to where I can only go in the bios....

View 2 RepliesI have successfully upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 (and solved the initial network connection problems).
However my OS has a lot of crud from the pre-upgrade state and I would like to do a clean install of Windows 10, without losing any old data files. I've read online guides on doing clean installs of Windows 10, but it is not clear whether you can only install into partitions that already have a valid Windows OS installed.
My computer has two identical hard disks, one of which is (or can be made) blank so what I would like to do is keep one with the 'cruddy' version of Windows 10 - at least until I have copied over all the files I want to keep and made sure I've installed all the software I want on the new 'clean install' Windows 10.
So, are there people out there who have done this? Are there things I should look out for?
I've tried using the "Create a Recovery Drive" and have tried making my own installation media using the "Media Creation Tool". Both seem to do nothing, just constantly search. The Media Creation Tool stays on the "getting a few things ready" screen for upwards of half an hour then I'll close it and it'll say "setup is cleaning up before it closes" and it'll stay on that screen forever. Even task manger won't close it - it will not show up as a process any longer, but still on the screen. EDIT: I have to shut down the computer to close the window.
Create a Recovery Drive, when choosing "Back up system files to the recovery drive", does pretty much the same thing, a screen with a green progress bar going left to right for hours. I'm trying to put it, either way, on a 32gb USB flash drive.
Its a new computer no software has been installed by me other than the MCT and a tool to find the windows product key. I'm very new to Windows 10 coming from XP.
how can I install Windows 10, that it uses the less disc space, it can? My problem is, that I have laptop with 64 GB SSD, and after upgrading (from windows 8.1) to Windows 10, the used space is more than 35 GB, so now I have a very little free disc space now.
View 2 RepliesI know I need to disable secure boot in order to change the boot sequence. I ran into an issue trying to install Windows 10 on a GPT partition - it said it couldn't do it. So...after much searching, i learned (??) i need to use diskpart to clean the partitions to create one large unallotted space which would then allow me to install Windows. My question is, can i convert the disk to mbr and install Windows to it that way and run it in that mode. If i can do that, what would be the command to do that? > convert mbr after the clean command?? What about enabling secure boot?? Can i do that if i have installed Windows under MBR rather than GPT?
View 8 RepliesI have a laptop that came with Windows 8.1. The hard drive failed and has been replaced with a new hard drive. If I want to install Windows 10 on this laptop, do I first need to install Windows 8.1. and then perform the upgrade to Windows 10, or can I just install Windows 10? Will Windows 10 use the Windows 8.1 license key in the BIOS to activate? Or will this not work unless I first install Windows 8.1. and then upgrade to Windows 10?
This computer has never had Windows 10 on it.
The computer has a new unformatted hard disk that has never had Windows 8.1. installed.
I did an update a week ago and after that Windows 10 will boot to black screen without cursor.
When booting I get sometimes "Automatic repairs", I see the initial logo. After some minutes the screen goes back and that's it.
When I try to boot from an USB the same happens - I cannot get even to re-install Windows. The USB works on another PC just fine.
I booted from Linux and deleted the hiberfil.sys file, checked all the partitions of the disk (in this case SSD) with GParted- no issues.
I really don't know how to get even to the advanced options and try to reset or run command prompt.
A few of us have Dell laptops (mine is 7537) are having problems updating to Windows 10.
Just after installing drivers, the screen goes black with NO cursor, the HDD light stays on solid, the computer no longer responds (there's a backlight on the laptop screen), personally, I've left mine for over 8 hours while at work, nothing happens.
Powering off and back on restores the installation procedure and it does the same again within a couple of minutes.
Powering off and back on again restores Win 8.1 where it deletes the Win 10 files and re-downloads it all, I've tried this 4 times so far.
These laptops have NVidia AND Intel graphics, all drivers are up to date before installing, there's nothing in the BIOS of my laptop to disable multi-monitor or either of the gfx cards
some people have reported they can press enter, enter their password, press enter again, wait a few minutes, then press Win+P, arrow down twice and press enter to get something to display, the majority of us do not get this though so we assume it's a different issue with ours. Everyone I know who's having this issue has the same model laptop or a Dell Alienware.
So I've upgraded from windows 8 to 10, an upgrade not a clean install. Everything went well except the final part. When it said finishing etc. suddenly a black screen came and an error was shown. All I remember from the error was 'terminate the program'. Soon the error was gone and all I was left with was a black screen and the mouse cursor. Now the black screen comes up after the loading screen (the cursor as well).
View 1 RepliesI have to do an install of Windows 10. It was only a few days ago I just installed to a hdd. The hdd is clearly screwed at a certain point. I copied a load of stuff to it and it is now totally locked into doing something. Whatever it is trying to figure out - I have seen it do it before. Just to cut a long story short - I am about to install win10 to a new drive. ssd incidentally.
do I need to completely format over that disk partition with win 10 on it before doing a new install on the new drive? What I am asking is whether it will refuse to license it if it detects another win10 on the system. Just that portion of the disk is screwed but I have stuff on different parts of that disk that are fine... They can stay. I will simply consider that partition out of bounds from now on.
I've been considering shrinking my one disk (disk 0) to create another volume, a data partition, but I'm still not clear what happens in the event that I want to refresh, reset or clean install Windows 10 in the future. Would the data partition remain or, as I thought I read, Windows will format the entire disk?
View 1 RepliesI did a bit of research and this seems to have been an issue for a while, or has been in the past. Was upgrading to windows 10, I first had to restart my pc cause it was initially stuck on that preparing to install problem with the green bar being stuck around 25%.
It then got through that and began the installation process with the big circle and rebooting process. However around 91% when I last looked at it it was just black screen, this stayed this way for about 3-4 hours. I then decided to reboot the pc and it has now booted to the login screen. Is this a known bug or could there be a possible issue?
The problem seems a bit different as some people I saw have had to fall back on PC restore points etc. So not sure if it installed or what could be the problem.
Also side note, I upgraded my pc when windows 10 first publically released, but rolled back because I had about 5min shutdown times.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with an Intel I5 processor, 64 bit with no hardware upgrades (stock). I had accidentally stepped on the screen (fell off my lap and then crunch) which was mangled beyond repair, so I have been using it similar to a tower, with a VGA and/or HDMI connected monitor (my HDMI cable went bad, I picked up a new cable but hadn't hooked it up to the second monitor. I started my free upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to 10 last night. I woke up to the black screen/mouse pointer issue which is what brought me to this thread. I tried the recommended fix:
1. Hit ctrl, type in password and enter
2. Win Key + P + Down Arrow. (Win Key + P only seems to do the same thing)
This brought up options to
1. Disconnect projector (Tried this and lost connection to the VGA even after reboot)
2. Duplicate (Screen is still black with mouse cursor, but I saw a little bit of red and blue pixels at the bottom where the task bar should be until I disconnected and re-connected the VGA, then it was back to black screen and cursor)
3. Extend (still black screen and cursor)
4. Connect Projector (still black screen and cursor)
I'm not sure what to do. I must have some OS installed, because I am able to also perform these operations from my USB Keyboard/Mouse. I'm just not sure how to get Windows back on my VGA connection (I haven't tried HDMI because I did not have it connected when I ran the update.) I thought Duplicate displays would do the trick, but apparently not. For as beat up as the laptop is on the outside, the hardware performs fine. I also have a 2nd laptop (work laptop, also a Lenovo W541) that I can use if any solution involves downloading something bootable.
So basically, I've been dealing with this issue ever since I've upgraded to windows 10 months ago. I've done disk checks sata port checks almost everything under the sun
Months ago, anytime my computer was shut down for more than an hour or 2 I would encounter an interesting unique problem. After booting and loading the bios screen, the next screen would be black and would hang there and I would have to hard reset and try again. I would keep having to hard reset until it would boot into the Windows Boot Manager and from there I would hit the Reset button or go to the advanced settings, and hit continue to windows 10 and it would from there boot into windows successfully. AHA! now you must be thinking "Simple work around! Simply boot into the Windows Boot Manager every time you shut down your computer and easily but annoyingly bootleg boot into windows 10 everytime using the Boot Manager options" and I thought the same. Unfortunately unless I let my computer get to the boot manager by hard resets at that black screen I cant get windows 10 to boot.
I've reinstalled windows 10 again for the 2nd time on a new ssd in hopes that it was a drive issue but that does not seem to be the case, This is my second install of windows 10 on this ssd. This time I've installed windows HOME instead of Pro.
Do I've wasted a write cycle on this new Samsung 850 evo? I just received it in the mail and would rather not waste its lifespan on trouble shooting
When I turn on my laptop, it shows a black screen with non-flashing dash on top left after Lenovo logo. I did the clean install but it didn't work. After that,I tried to clean install Windows 10 on my old HDD and it works! Why my SSD isn't work?
P.S. It can enter the BIOS menu
I've tried downloading and installing Windows 10 via the System Update for the past 24 hours (I've tried it 5 separate times). Every time it gets to 84% overall, and 36% configuring settings, then goes to a black screen with nothing on it (including no cursor) and almost no HDD activity. This has happened all five times.

Upgrading from windows 7 to 10, started install at around 10:30am and left it....around 2:30pm it started the large circle with the % in the centre, and again left it for another hour or so and came back to a black screen, no cursor or anything.
I waited until about 7:30 and still nothing and did a reboot by holding the power button down. On restarting, I get the windows 10 logo with the spinning dots, and then it cuts to black with no cursor. The CPU light does what it would usually do on startup, and when it first cuts to black but then the screen seems to change to a different black (if that makes sense?!) and the light only blips extremely quickly with a long period before it blips again
i know this is another update gone wrong post but I can't seem to find any with the same problem, just similar ones. I've read it can take a long time, but it's been nearly 11 hours and is very frustrating!
i'm not mega pc savvy, I get 2 options when I boot, and I've looked and there's no option for me to do a safe boot, or to revert back go windows 7. If I leave it on black screen for too long it automatically goes into sleep mode.
I've been having some issues to get Windows 10 installed. I've got an ASUS ROG G20AJ desktop computer running an i7 processor and a GTX 760 graphics card. I got my Windows 10 update and everything went fine, and the installation process began. The problem is, when it gets to the 32 % of"Installating drivers and features", the screen goes black and I can only see the cursor. The installation process won't complete and it's been like 8 hours now. What should I do??
View 2 RepliesInstalled the 'Windows 10 Login Screen Changer' that I found on this forum, clicked 'change background' and bam...black screen. I turned the computer off and on again and still black screen with a Cursor.Ctrl Alt Del does nothing. My keyboard still lights up, and pressing Windows + P brings up the project menu but doesn't solve the issue. Forgot to mention I'm running the newest build of Windows 10 and have been for several weeks without any problems.
View 1 RepliesI just attempted to install Windows 10 on my new PC. During the upgrade process, the screen went blank @ 75% and didn't come back. There was active HDD activity, so I waited until it stopped before restarting the PC.Upon restarting the PC, everything went fine and I got the "Hi" messages and so on. After that, the screen went black again and didn't come back.
After waiting, I forced-shutdown the PC and turned it back on. Windows logo appeared and everything seemed fine. Login screen appeared and I could login. After that, the cursor froze and the screen immediately turned black - and it stays that way. What's wrong?
