Installation :: Laptop Won't Turn Off Or Restart Properly Since Upgrade
May 17, 2015
I recently started trying out Windows 10. It's buggy and frustrating, but it's still in preview mode, so... That's expected.
Nothing was working when I installed build 10074 off disc, so I installed build 9926 off a disc (I got the iso from MSDNAA, I'm a programming student) then upgraded via settings to 10074.
During the upgrade, my laptop started resetting, normal. But halfway through, the resets stopped working.
The screen switches off, the cd drive switches off and the hdd activity light switches off, but the power stays on, and the fan keeps running. It also doesn't switch off on shutdown either.
I finally have a working version of Windows 10, minus Cortana and Spartan (I'm in Aus), but now my laptop won't shut down.
Could it be drivers? Is it OS interference? Is there a way to fix it without uninstalling and re installing Win 10? I really cbf going through all that again...

I just built a new pc. Specs are Asus Z87-Pro Motherboard, Intel i7 4790k, 16gb RAM, 3T seagate HD. Everything has been performing well on my computer except for when it needs to restart. When I go into windows and click shutdown it has no problem but when I click restart it will exit windows and turn off the display but the computer will remain running and will not boot back up.
I have to manually press the power button to turn it off and then press it again to boot it back up. This also happens when it needs to restart from other programs. From what I have found is it may have to be something with bios versions or settings but I honestly have no clue. I have the most recent bios update for my mobo and I haven't found any settings that would fix this in my bios either.

My windows 7 PC was hard to start and restart and I needed to try 10 times or more before it worked (then I didn't restart it for days).
I managed to upgrade it to Windows 10 hoping that it will cure the problem BUT still it is a problem to start.
I checked everything and used every tool possible on windows 7 and windows 10 but nothing worked. (ccleaner and others failed)
So now I have a windows 10 PC that doesn't want to start easily.
After upgrade to windows 10 I GUESS that all driver files have been changed ?what else could it be ?

Bit of background: Was getting 8024601 errors when attempting to upgrade with the Windows Update method. It would start installing, get to 85% before stopping for a while. Then it would finally reset, only to boot up win 8.1 and Windows update would have the above error code for the attempt.
So I decided to try the Media Creation Tool instead. I select the option to upgrade this PC, it downloads fine, and everything goes okay until it wants to reboot my machine. Tried it twice, first time it sat there waiting to restart. It never did, no programs exited, didn't log off or anything. Second time it gets to the same stage, but locked up my computer instead.

For a couple of days, I am trying every solution from this forum, for windows 10 upgrade on my laptop Dell 15 L502x (early 2011) with windows 7 Home Premium. I tryed via Windows upgrade system tray icon (after restart - black screen, mouse pointer), then I tryed wit ISO on dvd/USB, same problem. After that I have disable one graphic card, then another, in both cases, same problem. Every time(when black screen come) I tryed with CTRL and then type password - no result. I have updated all my drivers, all updates are downloaded,

I convinced my friend to upgrade to windows 10 on his laptop and it failed leaving it screwed.
The laptop is based on a Clevo W350ET chassis.
When you turn it on it goes to a screen saying 'Recovery Your PC/Device needs to be repaired, A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed, Error code 0xc000000f'.
Any options like revert to a previous built, system restore or whatever do not work.
Any chance of saving the current install or will I have to reinstall everything? My friend has old programs he is concerned he cannot get anymore.

I have a lenovo e425 laptop that recently received the windows 10 upgrade from microsoft. I am currently running windows 8.1 Pro and when i started the upgrade to windows 10, every time it reaches the 30% part where it finishes the copying files part, and it restarts, my computer shuts down completely like *poof*...
When I put my computer back on, and it says attempting to recover installation, it shuts down AGAIN like *poof* Then when I restart it again, it just goes back to "restoring previous windows" and it restarts then my computer shuts off again like *poof* Then when i put it back on, it comes on normally, and says failed to install windows 10.

Why I cannot run the windows upgrade setup from my USB (G:setup.exe). It is always showing me this error "Use the other installation disc that says 64-bit. When you insert it, Windows Setup will restart automatically."
I also heard that for many people it worked when they run windows setup from "G:sourcessetup.exe" (G: is my USB drive). But when i am trying to open the file it shows Shows setup screen for a few seconds then pops an error "This 32-bit version of Windows cannot be installed to an EFI-based computer. Installation cannot proceed. Use a 64-bit version of Windows to install to an EFI-based computer."
I am trying to run this setup on my HP laptop (Preinstalled: Windows 8 Single Language 64bit) via bootable USB of Windows 10 Home Single Language. I download the Windows10.iso image file via MediaCreationToolx64.exe and created a Media USB disk to install the operating system on the same laptop.
Bootable USB is running setup if i boot my laptop with USB disk. But it will force me to install a fresh Windows 10, which i don't want to. I want to upgrade my current Windows 8.x.
I am sure that i've downloaded correct 64bit version of Windows even i have Windows 10 AIO 32bit/64bit ISO image. Same errors showing in this ISO image too. If i run the "G:sourcessetup.exe" in my PC (which is running Windows 8 64bit) then it runs the process without showing me any error. Why it is happening with laptops only? I also tried to run setup from same USB in my another Lenovo Laptop (which is currently running Windows 8.1 Single language 64bit) but no luck it shows the same both errors.

I have a HP Pavilion 15 laptop that I bought in January this year. I had no problems with this laptop at all until I updated to Windows 10 and still don't for the most part.
When I attempt to shut down, hibernate or sleep my machine it goes to a black screen with the power still on, meaning I hold the power button down myself to switch it off (which is not good for it) or wait until it runs out of battery (also not ideal).

My HP notebook was working perfectly with windows 8.1. After upgrading to windows 10 it is not shutting down properly. Power and wireless buttons are still glowing and battery is also consuming. I need to press the power button at least for 4 seconds in order to shutdown completely .

I upgraded my Asus X205TA to Windows 10. However I wanted get a clean install so I went into recovery and chose to reset the PC and clean all apps, files, etc.
Whenever I try this it fails then gives me a blue screen with options. Only booting back to Win10 only works.
Is there a way I can get my win10 key and install from a win 10 download?
I did go back to Windows Download tool and had it create a USB stick. Can I use this to do a clean install?
I don't want to move on unless I know I can get Win 10 installed on this again. I know once I erase everythign my there is no option to go back to Win 8.1.

I'm running Windows 10 Home on an ASUS Q551LN 2-in-1 laptop which originally came with Windows 8.1.
When I shut down/restart/sleep the machine, it does not shut down - the Hark Disk activity light is still blinking and the normal power button press does not work. If I do nothing, it remains in this state for hours. I need to press the power button for 5 seconds to reset it. Only then I can start the laptop.
This happens around half the times. The other half it works normally. I never had this problem with the OEM 8.1 on this machine.
Based on other threads - I have the latest Windows 10 updates, and disabling fast boot did not solve the problem.

I installed the Windows 10 update on two Lenovo Lap top computers. One is an IdealPad, the other a Think Pad Edge.
Within a couple of days the Google Chrome I had installed on both computers slowed to a crawl when trying to open. It can take as much as 45 minutes to open. Once it does, I can use it with ease.
I've uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it several times on both computers. Even installing it now takes over an hour if it downloads at all.
Ran the troubleshooting option in Chrome and it says it is incompatible. Because Chromes trouble shooter doesn't offer the option of running it for the Windows 10 update I tried running it with both OS of Windows 7, which is what the Windows 10 update replaced and the Windows 8 OS as I read somewhere that the 10 version was close to that.

I went to Dell and saw that my laptop is compatible with Windows 10. It's a Dell Inspiron 3737. I thought I fixed my issue when I disabled "fast startup" in power settings. It occurs to me that some of my problems were fixed (excessive battery draining).
If I shut the lid and leave it, the next day the laptop won't turn on. I have to hold the power button down until I see the power LED flash and then I can press the button again to turn on the laptop.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with an Intel I5 processor, 64 bit with no hardware upgrades (stock). I had accidentally stepped on the screen (fell off my lap and then crunch) which was mangled beyond repair, so I have been using it similar to a tower, with a VGA and/or HDMI connected monitor (my HDMI cable went bad, I picked up a new cable but hadn't hooked it up to the second monitor. I started my free upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to 10 last night. I woke up to the black screen/mouse pointer issue which is what brought me to this thread. I tried the recommended fix:
1. Hit ctrl, type in password and enter
2. Win Key + P + Down Arrow. (Win Key + P only seems to do the same thing)
This brought up options to
1. Disconnect projector (Tried this and lost connection to the VGA even after reboot)
2. Duplicate (Screen is still black with mouse cursor, but I saw a little bit of red and blue pixels at the bottom where the task bar should be until I disconnected and re-connected the VGA, then it was back to black screen and cursor)
3. Extend (still black screen and cursor)
4. Connect Projector (still black screen and cursor)
I'm not sure what to do. I must have some OS installed, because I am able to also perform these operations from my USB Keyboard/Mouse. I'm just not sure how to get Windows back on my VGA connection (I haven't tried HDMI because I did not have it connected when I ran the update.) I thought Duplicate displays would do the trick, but apparently not. For as beat up as the laptop is on the outside, the hardware performs fine. I also have a 2nd laptop (work laptop, also a Lenovo W541) that I can use if any solution involves downloading something bootable.

I tried to reset my laptop. In the process of resetting it shut down due to overheating. When I turn it back on, the logo appears but no loading bar shows up. It hangs there for a few seconds and then it restarts and keeps cycling over like that. I tried to do a hard reset by taking out the battery and plug, then holding the power button for 30 seconds. I tried doing a system restore. I also tried removing the ram to see if that would work but no luck.
Here's my specs:
- 2.50GHz 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3210M Memory
- 8GB DDR3 SDRAM (2 DIMM) Video Graphics
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M switchable graphics with 2048MB DDR3 and up to 1696MB total graphics memory
- Hard Drive - 750GB
