Installation :: Linux Grub Bootloader Failed After Updates
Nov 29, 2015
My son (26) just returned a long term loan P8B67B Deluxe to me with Linux and Win 7 on it. I upgraded 7 successfully, but after updates installed last night the PC refuses to boot saying "error, no such partition, Entering rescue mode .. grub rescue>" Repeated boot attempts saw it fall into error 53 on the mobo lcd display. Removing one ram stick brought me back to booting to "error, no such partition, Entering rescue mode .. grub rescue>"
Trying to boot just one HDD either gives the above message, or "error, no such device : 521683dd-0417-4a66-b3fb-c6c67b9cc9fo grub rescue>"
I don't need the linux. That was my engineer son. What fixes are there to bring it to Win 10 alone? I don't know the new key or the old 7 key. Should have checked and written it down

A small server setup by a linux programmer who is no longer available and support is non-existant failed after an automatic update left the machine unreachable from the LAN. Samba crashed and I now have 2 RAID arrays formatted NTFS that have thousands of files. I am going to install Windows 10 Pro on it. Will I be able to recover the data on the two RAID arrays?

I just got my new MSI GE62 2QD that came installed with windows 10. Now I'm new-ish to computer systems but I used to have a dual boot of Windows 7 & Ubuntu using basic bios. Now I am lost with the new UEFI.
Here's my question: With my new pc using UEFI, how would I go about dual booting Windows 10 & Fedora 22 Without using grub. I wish to keep the default Windows boot loader.

how to be able to install both Linux and Windows 10 on my laptop's hard drive? So that when I restart my laptop I will be able to choose from either Windows 10 or Linux?
I did that once with Windows 7, and I remember I had 2 possibilities: Either to be able to choose through a Linux prompt at the startup, or through a Windows prompt. I tried both options. (It was either doing it via a Microsoft boot manager or via Linux boot manager or something like that, I just can't remember)
Edit: I remember there was some sort of Linux boot manager if you install Linux AFTER Windows, and if you then delete Linux completely, you had to repair Windows boot loader (Or it was the other way?i.e installing Windows AFTER Linux and then repairing Windows boot loader?)

I just recently decided to dual boot my UEFI-based system between Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. Upon using EasyBCD to create a bootloader that only includes Windows 10 and Windows 8.1, I get this mess:
How I can get back a Metro-styled Bootloader that only includes Windows 10 and Windows 8.1?

I've disabled automatic updates (drivers, Win updates) by making changes to Win 10. Now every entry in Update History is listed as a failed update. Of course, no update has failed; I don't want to install them yet. Is there a way to delete failed update entries?

The update creating this issue: Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3140743).These are the steps of the loop:
1) My PC downloads this update automatically in the background. I have no option to stop my PC from downloading it.
2) I am forced to install this update. There is no option for me to shut down/restart without having to install the update.
3) During the restart, I get a notification that my PC was unable to complete the update and hence the changes are rolled back and the whole process starts again.
This thing has been going on for days, wasting my time and getting on my nerves. Why is Microsoft so dumb?
A) If at all my PC has downloaded an update, why don't they save it somewhere on my PC till the update process is successfully complete instead of downloading it again and again wasting my bandwidth?
B) Why have they not given options to opt out of (downloading/installing) troublesome updates like this?
C) Is there a solution to this issue?

My computer's SSD failed, and I just bought a SSD and installed Windows 10 on it. However, it is not activated. I originally had Windows 7, then installed Windows 8 Pro, then upgraded to Windows 10. This is all legal.
However, I ran a BIOS product key checker on my computer, and it shows that I don't have a product key in my BIOS. Is there anything I can do?
This is also quite an old machine (from 2007), would it support BIOS product key?

On one of my computers Silverlight updates have failed 26 times. Silverlight does not appear on my two newer computers so I did some research and found that it is no longer used. Should I remove it from my computer so Microsoft stops trying to install to it?

Date: 10th September 2015. Machine working fine under windows 10 for over a month. Checked to see what Microsoft updates after doing a Microsoft Defender full scan and everything ok. It seemed from settings->check for updates that there were a number of updates that required the machine to download and restart. Decided to update immediately and did the same on a dell laptop and Linx 10 tablet all running windows 10. All machines did update and restarted fine, except my main laptop - Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5334 did not recover after the update and is now continuously in "Restarting" loop. Tried powering up and down and trying to force it to reset into some sort of safe mode. how I can get it into state that will allow me to go back to the last known working state as I'm fairly sure this is an update that is not compatible with the hardware.

I thought it would be nice to have Windows 10 on my laptop too, but the touchpad and Start menu + Search didn't work, so I thought I'd try and reset Windows 10. That failed, and now I'm completely unable to get the bootloader working. My issue is that I've tried installing Windows 10 ISO using my USB and both Microsoft's program and Rufus. The only USB I can get my HP Stream 11 to recognize, is a Windows 8.1 USB I created with Microsoft's other program that allows you to reinstall Windows 8.1 using your code, but I'm not sure I have one of those anywhere. What could I be doing wrong?

My PC started shutting off randomly. i checked the event manager and it turns out that the pc is shutting off because of a sudden loss of power. then, i noticed something in my boot loader. when booting up my computer, there's some sort of russian writing under TOOLS in the bootloader menu..... is this the reason my pc keeps shutting down?and what does this russian writing mean? my computer has nothing to do with russia. I live in pakistan and i never chose russian as an option under languages and settings or anything else of the sort.

I have a home network with two computers running Windows 10 build 10130 and several computers running Linux.
Under Windows 7 and 8.1 all computers would connect to each other correctly for file and printer sharing.
Under Windows 10 I can only connect to the other Windows 10 computer.
I have checked out all settings in Advanced Sharing Settings.

I have been trying to install the Windows 10 upgrade to no avail .
I am running windows 7 home premium x-64 on a Gateway NV78 laptop.
Things I have already tried range from deleting programs and device drivers to reinstalling the updater. Have run a clean boot and ran from the updater, the build. a startup disk, and from a usb flash drive. I have deleted my printer drivers, virus software, and cleaners.

I'm on a Windows 10 Pro PC accessing a linux server with samba etc installed and working well (visible via Homegroup to both Android and Windows 7 pro). From the Win 10 box, if I type the name of the server in Windows File Explorer, then the shares from the server show up without issue. However, if I go into the Network folder, it does not see the linux servers - even though they are correctly configured for the correct homegroup. My windows 7 machines can see the servers in "network" as can my android devices.
Here's a screenshot. Note, the red arrows show what displays in Network folder (red arrows). If I click on the Server Name (HunterNAS in this case), the server shares are displayed and it shows up in the Network folder (blue arrows). Even after making the successful connection, display of another file explorer window > Network folder displays no linux server shares...

I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre preloaded with Windows 10 Pro. Sometimes when I go to File Explorer and click on Network it shows something called "Ralink Linux Client" connected to my home network. When I select its properties the only information I get is it's MAC address. But the funny thing is when I check my router's list of connected devices the Ralink Linux Client doesn't show up on my router's list even though it shows up on Network on my computer. I am using a Buffalo WHR-300HP router. I also have a Thinkpad notebook computer running Windows 7 Pro on my home network and this phantom device never shows up on Network on the Thinkpad. This Ralink Linux Client comes and goes on my Thinkcentre showing up sometimes but not all the time.
I tried researching this on the Web and apparently others have had this problem too both with Windows 7 and Windows 8. But I am reading conflicting information about what might be going on. One forum poster suggested that this means that the router connected to the network is picking up another router within range. Someone else suggested that this is actually something to do with the local router's internal components.
edit - My Thinkcentre is connected to my router via Ethernet. My Thinkpad is connected wirelessly.

I convinced my friend to upgrade to windows 10 on his laptop and it failed leaving it screwed.
The laptop is based on a Clevo W350ET chassis.
When you turn it on it goes to a screen saying 'Recovery Your PC/Device needs to be repaired, A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed, Error code 0xc000000f'.
Any options like revert to a previous built, system restore or whatever do not work.
Any chance of saving the current install or will I have to reinstall everything? My friend has old programs he is concerned he cannot get anymore.

Recently, I decided to do a factory reset, to cleanly wipe my drive, with the exception of Windows. When the reset was about 30% through, the reset failed. Now, when I try and use my laptop, it only gets to the ASUS logo, then goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore symbol on the top left corner. I've tried doing F9, SHIFT+F9, and everything else in between. My laptop is an ASUS G74SX, and I don't have a recovery partition for the laptop. I also cannot get any external programs for the laptop, such as ISOs, etc.

My father hit yes to upgrad his HP Probook 6407b from Windows 7 to Win 10. He did not realize what he was saying yes to.He brought it to me before it finsihed. I got into win 10, but then had issues with HP security software at boot. It would hang at boot, say something about a finger print reader, and then allow me to log in. So I decided to revert back to win 7. that failed. Goes to try a startup repair and it does not work. It looks like win 7 trying to do it and not 10.
Is there any way to recover either win 7 or 10?I tried a win 10 usb drive, but it says the upgrade was previously started in windows, turn off machine and restart, but that fails.
