When upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, am I able to choose what drive I would like Windows 10 installed to if I have multiple drives? I want to put an ssd in for the operating system when I upgrade and would I be able to just tell Windows 10 to install to the ssd?

My dell 7500 has windows 7(C: drive) and windows 10(F: drive) installed on the single internal HDD. It also has three USB disks used only for data. When I boot I get a message saying that an operating system cannot be found and I should try unplugging my USB drives and then reboot. When I unplug the USB drives and re boot, it finds the windows systems and finishes the boot process with no trouble.
Checking the BIOS shows only the CD-Rom drive and the three USB drives are listed in the boot order and the drive listing. I then deactivated the "boot from USB drives" item in my BIOS and then the computer boots fine.
Also, I have been experimenting with Ubuntu on a USB pen drive but have removed it. I suspect that there are some parts of grub hanging around.

I am looking forward to replace my laptop HDD with a SSD. My laptop is the Toshiba Satellite l70 pro 17.3". I have a basic idea of doing transferring windows 8 to an SSD but apparently it is harder to transfer Windows 10 to a SSD when compared to Windows 8 and 7.

Not sure what to do. I did find a page to uninstall Win 10, but I'm not sure it would do it correctly without the internet. I'm not even sure if it would work because I was afraid to try it. It is a HP computer and it was running on 8.1. I'm using my spouse's computer to post this.

I upgraded from windows 7 to 10 about 2 weeks ago, absolutely no issues, i was happy with everything.
My computer had froze and i forced a shut down via power button. Upon starting again i was greeted with "no operating system found"
I fixed that problem now im greeted with a black screen with something like "no bootable device found please detach any devices"
What i have tried is....
Made a win10 usb with the media creation tool from another computer.
Startup repair does not work, error is "the hard drive is locked"
I have tried with the command prompt the following commands
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrev /rebuildbcd
*rebuildbcd tells me i have 2 installed windows os. One is regular windows and windows.old*
(If i say Yes to rebuild both of those, my media creation usb stops working if i restart. I get the error 0xc00000f and have to recreate the media creation tool on the usb. Otherwise i keep getting the same error)
I have also tried different sata ports on my motherboard, resetting bios settings, changing boot order, changed sata cable. What else can i do?

one part before installing Windows 10. In creating a virtualbox you will see three lines with the top to fill in with name " Windows 10 Technical Preview " then second line with type --Microsoft Windows and the last one with version -- I wasn't sure which to pick the right operating system of my laptop. Well I do know that my operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium SP-1 64X but see several youtube videos show with Windows 8.1. Am I click with Windows 7.1 in the line. Is that correct.

Recently, I purchased a Microsoft Surface 3. From the day I got the tablet, it has been having freezing problems that seem to progressively get worse and worse. Today, I couldn't go two minutes on my Surface without having to restart it.
I would prefer to return the product, but since I can't, I decided to first try to update it. The update kept getting frozen, encountered an error or would just be stuck at 0%.
After exhausting all the other options I knew off, I quickly moved what little files that I had off of my tablet and then performed a factory reset.
The factory reset got stuck at 99%. And I don't mean that it just was there for a few hours--no, the screen literally froze. So I restarted the tablet again, which brought me to a screen that says, "Choose an Operating System" that has two options. Both options are "Windows 10 on volume 3." There seems to be no distinction between them. But the problem is that if I click one, and it doesn't matter which one, or if I just let the tablet automatically run on one of them, it loads for a few seconds with the "Surface" screen, and then immediately loops back to the same "Choose an Operating System."

Anyhow I am currently using windows 7 (not a fan of windows 8). Since windows 10 is released I wanted to install and try it. Initially I installed windows 8.1 in my D: drive (works normally as far as I can tell), and upgrade it to windows 10. I am keeping my windows 7 in drive C: as I do not have any other working computer if the installation failed.
So halfway upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10, the upgrade failed and a restart is needed. When restarting I tried to reset the installation but even that is failed. When restarted again there is no operating system in that drive (drive D: ) ??
Currently I tried to reformat my drive D: (windows 10) with my current windows 7 (installed in drive C) but it says the volume is in use by another process but it refused.
Summary
Drive C: - windows 7, still functioning properly
Drive D - where windows 8.1 is located and upgraded to windows 10 but failed, currently cannot detect any os when I boot from drive D: , and cant format the drive.
I know its really complicated the way i installed my windows 8.1 with my windows 7 intact, but I'm worried if the installation failed, I have no backup computer to fall back.

I have recently upgrade to Win 10 from windows 7 and it was running fine until it started booting with the analyzing and repairing windows screen. I had tried to get out of it by windows repair and by system restore but there were no points to restore too. I ended up trying the windows reset which failed when I selected to leave my files so then I tried the reset including removing my files. It failed part way through saying it could not complete the action and now when I boot up every time I get "An operating system wasn't found" etc. I do not have a windows CD or know my windows registration number.

My laptop suddenly crashed and now it says "Boot media missing" when I restarted. After that, it always takes me to "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then the 'Troubleshoot' menu.
In the 'Troubleshoot' menu, it has two options: 'Reset this PC' and 'Advanced options'.
When I choose "Reset this PC", it asks me whether to keep my files or remove everything. I've tried both and it displays an error. When I choose to keep my files, it says that drive is locked and tells me to unlock the drive and try again. When I choose to remove everything, it says that there is a problem resetting the PC.
And then I've moved to "Advanced options". The options are: System Restore, System Image Recovery, Startup Repair, Command Prompt, UEFI Firmware Settings, and Go back to previous build. I've tried all of these and it all returned an error. When I chose UEFI Settings, it restarted to BIOS/UEFI setting. And my BIOS/UEFI can't detect my hard drive. DISKPART from Command Prompt can't detect it either.
My project is due in 3 days and I've got all my files in there. Is there a way to fix this? Or to recover my files?

I used TrueImage 15 to clone and shrink my win10 load to a new SSD. Original drive was a 1tb with 120g used in a 900g partition. I had TI clone and shrink that to the 240g SSD. However, the bootmgr was left behind.
I used EasyBCD 2.2 to put the bootmgr back but now it seems to be still missing a few secret win10 parts and asking for startup repair.. Can I use the downloaded win10p64 cd?

Am I alone, or are there others out there who would like a DESKTOP operating system to use with their DESKTOP computers? Swiping, pinching, tapping, chanting arcane spells to your Cortana crystal ball, ... -- all these may be OK on a phone or tablet, but don't they just add to the effort of using a desktop computer?

So I upgraded to Windows 10 last week, & after a few days decided I wanted to do the reset feature to have a nice clean install. I was also getting an annoying pop-up error that looked like some sort of malware, but virus & malware scans weren't getting rid of it.
Ok, so I do the reset, & opted for full clean not the quick one, just to make sure I got everything off there. It took quite a long time ( about 15-20 minutes per 1% progress), so I left it & came back later. When I got back I had an error message that said "There was a problem resetting your PC." with my only option being to click cancel. So I did. after that it brought me back to a reset screen, where I attempted to do the quick reset a few times, & it failed after a few percent each time.
At this point I decided to shut down & try again. When I booted back up I was greeted with the lovely message of "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Crtl+Alt+Del to restart"...so my pc was wiped but the reinstall part failed somehow it seems, leaving me with nothing.
I created a bootable usb for Win10 from the Microsoft website, following their instructions to the letter. Installation seems to go fine ( Copying Windows files, Getting files ready for Installation etc). That screen finishes up & I get a Restarting in 10 Seconds screen. I let it restart & then I get stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.
I have done some reading on this & tried everything I found, nothing has worked. I've let it sit, tried hitting Crtl to type password then hit Enter, I've unplugged my second monitor & any non essential USB devices, everything. I've tried installing multiple times, to the same result.
Also worth noting that I was unable to revert back to Win7. When I put my 7disc in I get a message saying "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk CD,DVD or USB flash drive, please insert it now."
I've used this disc many times with no issue, & now I can't even reinstall 7?
