I just upgraded my Windows 7 installation to Windows 10 using the Windows free upgrade. The upgrade completed successfully and I am able to boot into Windows 10.
I am not able to open any applications pinned to the taskbar. Even the windows menu is not launching! Hence I am stuck with only limited set of applications which have shortcuts on the desktop.
Do I have 2 re-install all my applications I have running on windows 7 PC when I upgrade to windows 10?

Pretty irritating. I'm not sure what I did to cause it, the only major changes that I've made to my computer are some basic mods to video games, and a couple of regedit's for icon arrows.
I've looked for a forum / article on this and have yet to find one describing my issue. Have gone through the task bar properties and display settings, multitasking settings etc.
Background: I was dual-booting Widnows 8.1 (came pre-installed on ACER laptop I recently purchased) and Ubuntu. This worked fine until I decided to take the free upgrade to windows 10 being offered. During the upgrade process, it deleted a partition for Ubuntu and ended up killing both OS. I was stuck with BIOS and how to restore my computer, particularly with both OS being able to co-exist peacefully.
I only needed to access Ubuntu for work purposes and my boss gave me a copy of both windows 8.1 and windows 10 (stand alone clean install). I did successfully install windows 10 but was not able to dual-boot to Ubuntu. Because I needed to prioritize work, I scrapped windows 10 and currently only run Ubuntu.
Good news, I quit my job and no longer need or want Ubuntu! I simply want to go back to the way things were meant to be and have my functioning windows 10- no dual booting. My questions are these: How do I restore my system to its original condition (with windows 8.1, if it still exists somewhere in my motherboard that is)? Considering that I am currently running Ubuntu, what do I have to do to make this successful (with the intention of getting rid of Uubuntu all together)? If I am unable to restore my system, then I will fall back to installing windows 10 (or 8.1 if that fails) clean; how do I extract my product license key from my system? It is not written down anywhere and windows will prompt me for it if I install from a CD.
After upgrade from W81 to W10, I have occasional Notepad, Thunderbird email, and PhotoPhilia crashes, no data saved. Occasionally the task does not crash but does disappear from the task bar (visible from Task Manager) though I can't get back into it.
I have not upgraded any of these products. I'd have assumed that Notepad, at least, would be current. I don't know how to find which build I am on.
I have attempted to download windows 10 around 4/5 times, the download completes and states that my computer needs to restart upon which it claims it is configuring the windows 10 upgrade. I would assume from this point it would restart into the windows 10 configuration however each time I have tried it it restarts back into windows 8 as if nothing had happened.
My laptop then opens up windows update and says I am able to download windows 10. This is really frustrating as I can't even seem to get into the windows 10 setup.
As you can see I am attempting to download again but there is no trace at all of it attempting to install windows other than this failed update that you can see here.
I am using an HP Pavillion 15-n268a laptop.
I'm planning on moving from Win 7 to Win 10 via a new install (although it seems I should upgrade first - I'll read about that). My questions have to do with my Win 7 applications...
#1) Is there a list someplace of applications that need to be "de-registered" so they can be registered on the new Win 10 clean install? For example, I'm pretty sure the Adobe suite has to be deregistered - maybe MS Office too?
#2) Is there a way to move an application? By that I mean I either don't have the original install files anymore or in some cases I've found some useful software from [URL] .... where you download the install file but it has to be installed and registered that day. If you wait a day, you can't register it. Any way to "move" these programs? I realize generally you can't just move applications and then the added complication of going from Win 7 to Win 10.
When I downloaded Windows 8 Pro a few years ago my PC only had 1GB of RAM, so it installed the 32 Bit version. I have since added another GB of RAM. When Windows 10 is released, will I be able to download and install the 64 Bit version, or am I stuck with the 32 Bit version on this PC?
View 9 RepliesIn Windows 7/8/8.1 I would press the Start/Windows button and start typing the name of a program (ie: Firefox, Word, etc) and it would pop up, learn, and as I did the same thing in the future.....I would just press Windows key, type wor, and Word would pop up and I press enter. Don't need to take my hands off the keyboard.
Windows 10 does not do that. I type Word and get Wordpad. I type Firefox and get 'Download Firefox - Free web browser', Secure (for SecureCRT) give me 'SecureCRT (file folder)', even though these apps are installed. Is there a way to put the apps in the search?
It is so hot to touch I now have to run cooling pad under the laptop, the fans just dont stop spinning it is so noisy now....
View 5 RepliesI have done the update once, waited around 2/3 hours. i then reset my PC. i then did the update again, waited at least 5 hours. still stuck at 32% if there is a fix for this, i will do anything. i have a brother who did this update. View 1 RepliesI've successfully updated to Windows 10 on my two Surfaces, but there is some kind of issue on my desktop PC. The upgrade process from Windows 8 fails at about 71% total (Installing features and drivers at 91%), and the error I get is:
C1900101-40017 Windows Update ran into a problem.
When I click on "Get help with this error" I'm directed to a page with some general troubleshooting with Windows Update. I've run Windows update repair tool and it fixed some issues, but the installation failed again.
I have now tried freeing up more disk space which I admit was a bit tight and I'm preparing to run the update again. Still, I'd prefer if there was a more detailed error message or a log file where I could see what exactly went wrong, but there are no indications where I might find one (either in the error message, the troubleshooter, or Google). As it is, I'm shooting blind here and this will now be my fifth upgrade attempt.
A few years ago i bought a windows 8.0 pro upgrade dvd with a windows 8 pro upgrade key.
Will this windows 8.0 pro upgrade key work when i do a clean install of windows 10 pro version 1511?Or will it only work with a full licence key?

View 2 RepliesWhen I lock windows (win + L) and relog back on any application I had running when I locked the account will be muted (browsers aren't affected). The application doesn't appear in windows volume mixer and the only way ive found to get my sound back is to restart the application.
For example, I`m playing fallout 4 I need to leave my computer so I lock it (for a variety of reasons) then I return a minute later and my sound is gone. The only way to get it back is to restart the game. This is pretty annoying for me because I have to somewhat frequently lock my windows while I`m doing things.
For example, when I'm unpacking a .rar file or installing a game, it becomes really slow to the point where I have to reboot.
View 1 RepliesI've run the free Windows 10 upgrade twice on my Windows 8.1 laptop. Both times, Windows 10 would download. As my system restarted the install would take place and system finishes restarting. However, upon hitting the splash screen, I was back to Windows 8.1. Not sure why the install is failing. Each time, I receive a failure in the Windows Update popup. Did not have this problem on my desktop going from Windows 7 to 10.

View 5 RepliesI just noticed in the Task Manager a while ago that "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Host Process" under "Background Processes" was running at about 50% of CPU constantly. I did some research and found out that this only seems to happen when Windows Media Player is running. It seems to happen even when Windows Media Player is not doing anything, when it's not even scanning for new media. When I close Windows Media Player, the "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Host Process" CPU usage drops immediately to 0%.
