Installation :: Not Getting The Option To Go Back To 8.1

View 7 RepliesI've searched around the internet for a bit and I know the easiest way is to go to Settings>Update&Security>Recovery>Go Back to Windows 8.1
but... I don't have that option. I only see "Reset this PC" and "Advanced Startup". I only just got Windows 10 on August 1st so I haven't passed the 30 days yet. Also, I still have the Windows.old on the C drive. I'm not sure what to do here as I can't find much about this issue.
- It took nearly a week to get my display driver to work properly.. and that was only after I had given up on it. I assume that Microsoft sent out some sort of silent, ninja fix.
- My taskbar stops working at least once a day, can't click on anything.
- Microsoft Edge crashes after being open for not very long at all (10 minutes? ..or sooner if I have 2 tabs open.)
- Unable to install CCleaner as it hangs at about the 50% mark of unpacking.
There are more issues with getting games to start up, but those aren't as important.
So, i absolutely hate windows 10 and MS for making it, so i am more than happy to go back to Windows 8.1. Only problem is, that i cannot.
Roll back option in recovery is gone and i haven't gone for 30 days. So, naturally i went for my trusty old 8.1 ISO that i made, only thing here now is that doesn't work either. I get this: "setup has failed to determine supported install choices" ... So..... What can i do?
I've got a little (really little) problem with my surface pro 3.
I don't have the option 'screen rotation" in my action center any more... It's not a big deal because I can still use that function by using the shortcut windows + 0 but it's missing and sometimes annoying to go plug the keyboard just to use that function...
I guess I should be able to turn it back on by changing something in the regedit...
I have a few issues with the Windows 10 install on my Asus X200 laptop and want to rollback to Win 8.1.
However, when I go into Settings/Update and Security/Recovery the only 2 options I have are 'Reset this PC' and 'Advanced setup'. The 'Go Back to Windows 8.1' option is not there.
Is the only option a reinstall of 8.1 from the USB backup I made?
After the update, I have Windows 10 installed on my laptop. I was not asked to change my password to a pin. I thought this was odd, because that was the process with another laptop at work that I have successfully updated. Thinking nothing about it, I proceeded, and it looks as if everything is updated properly. I don't have anymore current updates to install and have shut down and restarted this laptop several times using my password. I was wanting to set a pin, so I went into Settings/Account/Sign-In Options. The screen never shows any information and the active circle indicator just keeps gyrating in a circle. Here's a snip ....
View 1 RepliesI know that it is advised that one should not format a SSD without the Quick Format option enabled.
However I want to start with a completely clean SSD. This is not my C drive (Windows 10) but rather a second SSD used for certain applications. Question is, will doing this degrade the SSD's performance (i.e. speed and efficiency) or only theoretically reduce it's lifespan by one read/write process?
I'm planning to upgrade my Win7 laptop to Win10 next week and I'd like to know if there is an option for clean install (Delete all files, fresh windows settings, old windows moved to "windows.old" folder) from Windows Update or do I have to download Windows 10 Media Creation tool?
View 8 RepliesI want to start afresh with Windows 10 and have a clean installation of it without my old cluttered files. Does the installation give you an option to delete your old person files?
View 3 RepliesWindows 10 has a recovery option, comprising of two choices. I know the differences among them, so, yeah.
My question is: what's the difference(s) between a bootable disc and recovery?
I have a newly installed Windows 7 Professional x64 (not single language) with SP1 that is fully updated, genuine and activated. If I slip the Win10 CD used to upgrade several Win 7 Home Premium PCs in and ask it to upgrade me it requires a product key to continue. There is no option to skip this. The Win7 product key fails, the Insider key fails, the Next button is greyed out. The same issue irrespective of whether I take recent updates or not. I am logged on to a local admin account.
I clicked the flag in the system tray to register for Win 10 but that tells me my report is not ready yet. This after 8 hours of continuous connection to the internet. SFC shows no corruptions.
As I stated in the subject line, Windows 10 setup, whether using the regular update method, running the ISO from within Windows, or using the Media Creation Tool, only asks for product key and there is no option (button) for 'Upgrade'.
This may sound confusing so I want to make it clear that I am NOT trying to do a clean install on a system that hasn't been activated yet. I'm talking about the very first upgrade install. It won't work.
A couple of days ago I DID see the 'Upgrade this PC' (or something like that) and the install started but failed due to the ever popular Pentium G3258 CPU problem. There was advice all over the 'Net that all you had to do was disable one of the CPU cores in the BIOS and the install would complete just fine.
So I disabled the core and tried to start the install again.
Now the installation procedure won't even begin. It just sits there. It says 'Product key" in big letters and "Windows isn't activated on this PC. This means you'll have to enter the Windows 10 product key below or exit" and the only two buttons are Back and Next, both of which are grayed out.
I thought maybe the Windows 10 installation files were corrupt or something so I wiped the system and reinstalled 7 from scratch (Oh yeah, that was really a fun part of my day) and re-downloaded and used the Media Creation Tool again and selected (whatever it says) to begin the upgrade installation and now it's still doing what it was before, asking for a product key instead of running the upgrade installation.
I want to make it clear one more time because I'll get TL;DR answers such as "You can't do a clean install, you have to do the upgrade method first so Windows 10 can generate your hash and activate":
I am NOT attempting to do a clean install. I'm trying to run the initial 'Upgrade' method. I fully understand that you can't do a clean install without the upgrade being completed first. Why it's asking for a product key instead of starting an upgrade installation?
Should I be worried. I upgraded from Win 7. It took me to the welcome screen and when I typed in my password it would just hang. Then go black and reboot. So I pressed ctrl alt delete and options came up. I decided to just reinstall basically formatting my hard drive. And it is just hanging there now. At 99%. Is this normal and if not what should I do?
View 7 RepliesJust a few final comments about the free upgrade.
1. Upgrading does not allow an installation with dual boot option.
2. Windows 7 is gone after one month. If you don't like it, too bad.
3. My "legacy" Dell colour laser printer will not function with Windows 10. It works flawlessly with Windows 7 and getting a new printer gets rid of the saving plus a lot more than the savings of a free W10. I will pass on the "free" upgrade.
Is it possible to create a recovery partition or image on a PC, which could recover the PC using a Fn key during boot up ?
I have a PC with a recovery partition which is for vista, which is now obsolete now Imhave moved up to Windows 10 via Windows 7.... never want to recover to vista...
would love over to create my own recovery partition, where pressing e.g. Fn11 during startup invokes the recovery process.....maybe this is too difficult...there is a program called AOMEI OneKey Recovery which promises to do such, or so it looks...
Just want to check something, I am running 8.1 and 10 in dual boot, but when the time comes to running 10 on it's own how do I get rid of the OS boot selection option at start up?
I know that MSCONFIG has options but it will not allow me to set the timeout less than 3 seconds.
What about the start up and recovery option in the advanced tab in system settings? Would this get rid of the selection screen?
I am using Windows 7 SP1 [ Genuine ]. My upgrade to windows 10 is ready via windows update but i don't want to install it. how to remove this option so that normal system updates can be install.
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to rollback to Win7 after Win10 update. I've got some hardware that I want to use that's not compatible.
I've tried going to recovery and 'Go back to Win7' but it's telling me I need to delete the users I've created. The problem is that I removed the original user from Win7 so it wants me to delete the two users I created with Win10. Is there another way to uninstall? I know I won't be able to delete all users and I don't know how I can recreate the original account.
I do have a backup of my windows 7 install before I upgraded. Is my license still going to work or will it be inactive due to the upgrade?
I originally followed the path to upgrade my 8.1 Pro to Windows 10. Everything went fine and I created the USB during the process. Activation was OK.
Then after a few days and some unusual problems I reloaded my last Image of 8.1 Pro.
Question is Can I go back and just do a clean install since I have already did the upgrade process?
If i install the latest iso release of 10; is there still a way to revert back to my version of 7 until the final release of 10 comes out next month?
View 3 RepliesI'm trying to roll back to the OEM Win 7 on this machine. On the setting page "Updates & security" the options under "recovery" did NOT include rolling back to Win 7. The only choice was to roll back to the previous build. I thought perhaps I would have to work my way back to 7 build, by build. I started out with 10041, then 10130, then 10240. I clicked the "Back to previous build, hoping. Well, it went back to 10130 no problem. However, that is it. Going the Setting, Updates& Security route within this roll back of 10130 there is no way to keep going back to finally get back to Win 7.
View 4 RepliesWhen I installed windows 10, something went wrong and I could no longer could connect to the internet because some protocols were missing. Also, within five minutes of starting using my computer, the start menu stopped working. I have tried all the fixes I could find for the start menu including sfc /scannow and multiple powershell fixes. None of them worked. When I use the windows 8.1 install disk it, I get a message saying that something happened, setup has failed to determine supported install choices. Windows 10 is difficult to navigate and always seems to be missing some software.
View 2 RepliesIts been more than a month that i have updated my Pc to windows 10, and i actually dont like it at all so i need to find a way to go back to windows 8.1 without losing data like Steam games and pictures and more.
View 8 RepliesIs there any way to take Windows 10 back as if I had just installed it without losing programs I have installed?
View 9 RepliesI had just installed windows 10 on my pc. I just want to know,if i go back to windows 8.1 will the installed applications that I had on windows 8.1 still be installed if i revert back to my previous windows 8.1.
When I installed windows 10 I used an installation disk and not the upgrade option. The previous windows I had was windows Single Language and the one I have now is Windows Pro.
I installed the upgrade to W10 and I think I should have waited. Things are slow to open and lockups, frozen screens and streaming problems are happening all the time. I see there is a go back to Windows 7 option and I may take it for now, and do a clean install at a later date.
