So I recently gave my laptop an update today. It was fine before but...now it boots to a black screen with just a mouse pointer visible. What should i do?

Then it turned off and started booting went past the windows booting logo and than showed a black screen with a mouse pointer that constantly changes between loading and busy... you can move the mouse pointer on the black screen and nothing else... I can't boot the laptop and I don't know what to do
View 1 RepliesMy Laptop is Lenovo Y50. All of a sudden , on logging, the screen went blank with a mouse pointer & i couldnt enter password. No Control, alt, Del works. I didnt do any Windows 10 Update. Now the laptop is as good as dead. Only i have to reinstall the OS? There is no other option?

I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 - on my Asus sonicmaster laptop and now the flashing blue circle constantly shows up in and on and off state. Like it is trying to load or check something. How to get rid of this?
Switched on a friend's PC today with Windows 10 fully updated (upgraded from Windows 7 around a month ago), and it loads to where the login screen should be ie after the Windows 10 logo etc, but then the screen is blank. There's no mouse pointer, no login screen, and no monitor error (ie there's a source at least).
I've tried booting in safe mode but I get the exact same problem. Also I've tried just typing in the password to see if the login screen has been moved to a non existent monitor, but that doesn't work either.
I upgraded my preview build of Windows 10 (10130) to the pro final version because the preview wasn't able to find additional builds and kept crapping out on standard updates. All went smoothly, but the first thing I noticed is that the next time I booted cold, Windows 10 would get past the "starting windows" screen and play the startup sound.
However, the logon interface never appeared, or the cursor. All that was displayed was a solid black screen. I hard reset by holding down the power button and tried it again, which gave me the same thing. Again, hard reset. This still commonly happens, along with my CMOS date/time settings apparently being wiped after such reset. Sometimes the cursor appears, but mostly it doesn't.
Usually after trying enough times it'll pull through or by starting it after selecting a recovery option from F8. "Enable low resolution video" I know worked before, but it didn't give me low res display. (Not that I'm complaining) It could likely be because I installed over the preview, and in-place installations typically have issues. I'm also running a program to provide titlebars with aero styled glass transparency, and my graphics driver is up to date.
I am trying to figure out what is going on with my mom's laptop. Two days ago she told me she was using her laptop and everything was fine, but then she left to do some things in the kitchen and came back a bit later to the screen off. Upon waking it up by moving the mouse, all she got was a black screen with a white cursor. I have looked at it and upon manually restarting, it shows the Windows 10 logo, and then it goes to the black screen with the cursor. There is no login screen either but I do also hear the welcome music. One thing I noticed though is the cursor does have the blue loading circle next to it like it is actually still doing something, and it flashes and spins now and then, as well as the computer sounding like its working, but I have left this on for almost 40 minutes now and it is still just a black screen. It sometimes goes to the off screen and have to move the mouse to wake it up again. Some people online suggest task manager and opening up other windows but nothing works, I can just move a cursor.

View 3 RepliesSo basically, I've been dealing with this issue ever since I've upgraded to windows 10 months ago. I've done disk checks sata port checks almost everything under the sun and still have not found a solution to my problem.
Months ago, anytime my computer was shut down for more than an hour or 2 I would encounter an interesting unique problem. After booting and loading the bios screen, the next screen would be black and would hang there and I would have to hard reset and try again. I would keep having to hard reset until it would boot into the Windows Boot Manager and from there I would hit the Reset button or go to the advanced settings, and hit continue to windows 10 and it would from there boot into windows successfully.
Now you must be thinking "Simple work around! Simply boot into the Windows Boot Manager every time you shut down your computer and easily but annoyingly bootleg boot into windows 10 everytime using the Boot Manager options" and I thought the same. Unfortunately unless I let my computer get to the boot manager by hard resets at that black screen I cant get windows 10 to boot.
I've reinstalled windows 10 again for the 2nd time on a new ssd in hopes that it was a drive issue but that does not seem to be the case, This is my second install of windows 10 on this ssd. This time I've installed windows HOME instead of Pro.
I do NOT boot into a black screen with a cursor
There is now something I'm going to call "The Event" After a fresh install my windows 10 will freeze however i can move my mouse but no keyboard commands work and I from this point have to force reset my computer, AFTER i FORCE RESET when my computer is shut down for a couple of hours i encounter the boot problem. so this "EVENT" has something to do with whats causing this issue.
The Event was different when windows 10 was installed on my 1TB HDD, everything would lock up rather then being able to use my mouse and it would force reset on its own.
I was installing windows 10 (8.1 before) on my Dell inspiron 15 7000 series (7537), and it progressed to restarting after the installing drivers step, but after the restart and going through the dell startup screen, everything went black. The HDD light is stuck on and not flickering like it normally does.
There is no cursor or anything on the screen, it's just black. I waited for an hour and nothing changed, so I thought maybe it was frozen, so I restarted the computer via hard reset, which took it to a "attempting to recover update" screen, but after a few seconds on that screen it went immediately back to the black screen.
Its been about 30 min since that hard restart and its still black, HDD light still on, and nothing seems to be happening.
I upgraded from windows ultimate to windows 10. my computer boots through everything and finally brings up my old windows 7 desktop screen and then everything goes black, but mouse shows up on black screen. Is this a driver problem with windows 10? However, before the black screen appears the new start button and screen appears as the windows 10

View 4 RepliesWhile using PowerPlanner7, I believe I may have accidentally turned off display or brightness to 0. I am unsure if I successfully made it back to the desktop after rebooting(my attempt to solve the problem). I have tried searching the Internet for shortcuts that re-enable screen or turn brightness up(my keyboard brightness buttons do not work since I am on Mac and the functions keys are all remapped- holding fn then function is same as just pressing function now too)
View 5 RepliesI upgraded a desktop computer from Windows 7 ultimate to Windows 10 and there seems to be an annoying black screen issue which happens before the login screen.
After the Windows loading logo, the screen stays black for about 60-80 seconds (and all I can see is the mouse cursor). After 60-80 seconds, the login screen pops up and everything works fine and I can login.
I already tried the following:
- Updated NVIDIA drivers
- Completely removed NVIDIA drivers to see if it was a drivers problem
- Booted into safe mode, still happens
- Checked event viewer, nothing weird in the logs
- Made the PCIE slot the default slot for the primary monitor in the BIOS
- Ran the sfc /scannow command, no violations found
- Ran all Windows updates
- Took a look at the services and startup processes, nothing weird here
- Turned fast boot off/on, no change
- Full Malwarebytes scan, no infections found

I'd like to keep the fresh installation option as a last resort.
i upgraded my windows from 8.1 to 10.evrything seems fine but when i launch my games it won't run.i run dxdiag then i noticed that my intel vga and nvidia 840M's driver were uninstalled. I open the ASUS installer and installed my display driver.when i reboot, the screen goes black with the mouse cursor in it after ASUS logo.3 leds were lit.the hdd led is blinking. i reboot several times and hit F8, unfortunately nothing happened.
View 1 RepliesAfter upgrading to Windows 10 on my sony laptop my mouse will not come back on the screen after I close my laptop and the computer goes to sleep. I have to restart my laptop after every time my computer goes to sleep to get my mouse back on the screen. Just checked DM and the touchpad drivers are current.
View 4 RepliesEvery 5/10 minutes, my mouse pointer keeps sticking, for around 1 second, then jumps to where it should have been. It's almost as if the pointer isn't actually sticking but the screen isn't updating. This started happening after upgrading to Windows 10.
View 4 RepliesRecently my mouse pointer has been disappearing when the system wakes in Windows 10 Pro. I can still see it highlighting when moving the mouse and the dialog open with a right click. It only comes back if I open the Task Manager or a separate window. Strangely if I manually put the computer to sleep through the power menu this issue does not seem to appear, it only shows when the computer sleeps after the allotted time.
Not sure if this is an issue with Nvidia Drivers or a Windows Update.
Since loading windows 10 then mouse pointer working circle blinks with the can light blinks. Everything seems to work fine it just really bugs me. I went to setting and mouse then to pointer and it it set on the pointer only or top/first on list. this is a 1 month old Asus X550Z that came loaded with 8.1
View 1 RepliesWhen turning on Windows 10 my pointer will not show up for the password phase of startup. If I do get to the desktop, the pointer is either gone or it is frozen. I shut the computer down and after several startups, it will come back on maybe for a few minutes. I have checked the device manager for the mouse. Looked for updated versions. Ran a troubleshooting for it. Nothing says it is wrong. This has only happened with the upgrade to Windows 10. It used to be every so often, now it is daily.

View 2 RepliesThe loading symbol keeps flashing which is effecting what I can do on my computer. For example on Microsoft edge I will be typing and then it will suddenly select the text, so when I do my next letter it deletes everything I have done. It also effects things like drop down menu's or when I left click by going of it so I don't have time to select the option I want.
This does not seem to happen all the time but it currently is and has been since I turned my pc on.
It has only happened since I have downloaded windows 10. I do not have windows 8.1 on my computer as I deleted it so I cant really go back to download it again.
The mouse pointer on my acer r13 skips frames. It is not smooth at all.

My computer has been running normally for days after having installed the software, only while booting today have I been experiencing this issue. I have tried doing restarts and fully turning the computer off, nothing seems to work. Also the hidden files do not normally show up on my desktop.
View 9 RepliesOften when playing games, either in browser or not, the mouse pointer speed will change by itself. I can go into the mouse setup menu and change it back, but sometimes it then changes again. This happened in Win7 also. The touchpad also sometimes just stops working. This didn't happen in Win7. I gotta say Win10 makes some weird changes to things
