View 2 RepliesI installed windows 10 technical preview yesterday . I found a problem with system restore. It goes through everything normally but after it reboots I get an error. In the details it says:
System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
Source: %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps
Destination: Appxstaging
An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070057)
So I managed to break my partition table, but I was able to recover my entire C: drive and copy every file and folder to an external drive. My question now becomes, is there anyway to, when I reinstall Windows, to restore from that backup (since it's just a data backup of files and folders, not a system image)? Would booting into linux (so that partition isn't in use by Windows) and simply copy-past-overwriting the old files effectively give me my system back?

View 1 RepliesWondering how Windows 10 deals with putting data on a separate partition or drive. Does it use the same general method as in Windows 7, where it re-maps (for example) "Documents" to a folder on a different letter drive path? So that C:Users{user}Documents becomes G:Users{user}Documents?
I'm hoping that it actually becomes more like *nix, using symbolic links to point to the right place (so C:Users{user}Documents points to the separate partition of drive). Personally, I find the Win7 method to be clunky and problematic in actual use.
Because of a problem with 10 a tech told me to revert to 10270. I backed up everything important to my D: drive first. I did a complete formatting of C:. Then upon installing 10270 onto C: I first blew away the partitions on D:, realizing what I had done just after hitting the keys.
I have run Easeus's free Partition Recovery software but it finds absolutely nothing, even in deep scan.
Is there another reliable method with which to attack the problem of restoring the partition tables for D:?
I Bought an HP Pavilion Slimline (s5310f) computer in 2010 with Windows 7 Factory installed OS. Than I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate OS.
Installed Windows 10 Pro.
I deleted Windows/OLD.
What is in the Factory Image that shows up in MY PC files ? It is also listed in System Restore? Is it Windows 10 Pro or Windows 7 that originally came with purchase.
I read somewhere that Windows 10 does not have a Factory Restore only Recovery.
[URL] ...
Is it safe to format the Factory Restore drive D for other uses?
In Windows 7 every user inherited content of "Public" user folders such as Images/Music/Video.Now I don't see "Public" content in my user folders anymore. What could be done to unlock this functionality?
View 2 RepliesI have a Windows 10 PC that acts as a file share. Within this file share there are several hundred folders. I'd like to know if there is an easy to grant two different users different permissions to these several hundred folders.
For example, I'd like like one users to be have full control to folders A, B, C and the other user to have full control to folder 1, 2, 3 - Neither of which should be able to see what access the other user has.
Is there an easy way to do that other than going to each folder and granting each user appropriate access?
The ProgramData folder is not displayed in Explorer. I can search for programs that currently exist in this directory but can't access it. how to proceed?
View 4 RepliesI have a 500GB HDD divided into 3 partitions: The main one currently doesn't have an OS, the secondary one has Windows 10 64bits and the third one has Windows 7 64.
I want to carry(backup and then restore) the Windows 10 from the secondary partition over to the main one but without losing all the data on the main partition(movies, games, programs, etc.). How do I do that if possible?
I have recently had to re-install Windows 10 and had problems before so decided this time to do a clean install and then run the system image backup. This went well but when it came to the testing of the restore a problem arose. I was using the Repair Disc created after the system image backup completed and could not understand the source file indicated was not where I had put the backup.
The restore said the file was on the C: drive which was what I was trying to restore to.
Why is my Lumia 730 with Windows 10 Technical Preview unable to Restore backup data from OneDrive? Today I received an update from Windows Insider Program. Before installing it, I Backed up my phone data (Lumia Denim) to OneDrive. Then downloaded and installed the update, and now my phone is having Windows 10 Technical Preview. Although it was installed successfully, still I found some bug in the Flight Mode option . Flight Mode was ON and I couldn't turn it OFF. So I tried RESET MY PHONE.
While resetting my phone, it asked whether I would like to restore from the already Backed up data from OneDrive. I selected YES, but after successfully restoring data up to 20% the phone notified me that UNABLE TO VERIFY YOUR ACCOUNT. I repeated the process thrice with no solution. My phone is working phone, but I need the backed up data, mainly the contact list from the backed up data at OneDrive. How I could get my contact list back from back up without RESETTING THE PHONE. [No issues with my Internet connection]
I recently tried to upgrade a friend's Windows 8.1 notebook to Windows 10. I had a Windows 10 Greek DVD-ROM with me to save time waiting for the update to download. I checked System Properties, it was Windows 8.1 64-bit, everything was in Greek, so I assumed he had the Greek Windows version and I could proceed with the upgrade using my DVD-ROM. Unfortunately he originally had the English version and he had added the Greek Language Pack and changed the default display language to Greek! So after wasting about half an hour for Windows Setup to check and download updates, we were presented with the choice of keeping his data only (second), the choice to keep both data and applications (first) was grayed out. I read at the bottom that I could not make a proper upgrade because the language I'm trying to install was different from the system language! Oh my God! Eventually we wasted another hour to wait for the upgrade to download!
So the question is how can I check which is the original system language? One possible way is to install a utility such as Aida64 and go to the Operating System section, but this is not really convenient to download and install a utility just to check the language version. How can I do it from Windows without using any utility? System Properties do not display this information and if the user has changed the display language, like in my friend's case, you can be deceived. Neither does winver, I checked.
I was working with my computer the other day and it rebooted spontaneously. When it did I got a "Preparing Windows" or "Configuring Windows" message after I logged in and when if finished I was back at the very first Windows set up. None of my start menu adjustments were there, none of my mouse, wallpaper, etc. settings were in place, and worst of all I lost all my settings for my Firefox and Thunderbird applications which meant all of my mail history, address book, etc. btw, I wasn't connected to the internet at the time, my connection was down.
I get a message saying it can't? find a profile so it is creating a temp one which will be deleted on shutdown.
I should point out that my files are still there, except for Appdata/Roaming and I do have a back up of my data so if I can stop this reset behavior I can recover data.
Now it reconfigures at every reboot. Even after reestablishing my internet connection.
I have Windows 10 v1511 Enterprise 64 bit.
From the Command Prompt, run as administrator, how should I do to remove any TrustedInstaller or Authenticated Users or System users from the ACLs of an entire directory structure also contains files and links (this must not involve the ACLs of their destination)?
List of default folders that come in the "Program Files" and "Program File (x86)" when you do a clean install of Windows 10.
View 1 RepliesI'm back to running Windows 7 on my system. Along time ago, I moved the Windows 7 user profiles from c:/users/... to d:/users?... When I updated to Windows 10 (Get Windows 10), the update worked, but it created and used a new profile on the OS drive (c. Went back to Windows 7, and everything is fine. I need to know how to end up with a Windows 10 install that keeps and uses my existing user profiles. Perhaps it's a two step process... update from 7 to 10 and then reconnect or point to the old user profiles.
View 9 RepliesWhat is the MapData folder which has recently appeared on my D drive? (This is the drive containing all my user folders with the exception of Pictures.) It contains subfolders diskcache, mapscache and files overrides.json, updater.nma

View 6 RepliesI am currently trying to convert my mSATA SSD from MBR to GPT. I have downloaded EaseUS partition master and can see that I can convert the disk using the software. My question is however if this is possible to do with my mSATA drive that my PC boots from and has Windows 10 installed or does it have to be a drive that is not booted from. I know there are lots of threads on this however none specify of this is possible using the drive you are booted from.
View 1 RepliesSo when I decided to build this pc, i wanted it to have Win7. When i booted it up, i kept getting the message asking if i wanted to upgrade to Win10. so i thought "hey, i paid 50 dollars for win7, so why don't i upgrade to win10 for free instead of paying 100 dollars," so i did. and all of my downloads and files, everything, saved so i didn't have to download everything again. but turns out i don't like win10. so if i go back to win7, will everything stay on my hard drive?
View 1 RepliesI just bought a new computer and it comes with Win 10. I need to plug in my old hard drive with all my installed programs and data (Win 7) and moved them to that new drive (Win 10). Is there a software that you would recommend for this and what should be done? Clone or image? I am lost in terminology!
