Feb 3, 2016I have a problem with a video driver that wants to be installed, but when it's installed the system becomes unstable (it can hang or automatically restart). This is a long standing problem on certain ASUS notebooks with certain NVIDIA display adapters. The driver is for the NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT display adapter on an ASUS M70Vn with a 64-bit architecture. I am currently using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, which provides a stable environment and works good enough for my purposes.
How can I prevent the NVIDIA driver from being installed with the Windows updates? In earlier versions of Windows (for example, Windows 7), you could select which updates to install by putting a checkmark in front of the updates you wanted installed. Not so with Windows 10. All you get is a list of updates that are available and a click-box that says "Install now". I'm running Windows 10 version 1511 (OS Build 10586.0).
Cannot Select Default Browser - No Installed App For This Type Of File Or Protocol
Jan 4, 2016I realized recently that I don't have a default browser, so I went to Settings, then to Default Apps to select one. However, when I went to choose a default, I got a message saying that "There is no installed app for this type of file or protocol."
Where there should be a list of browsers for me to choose from, there was only a link to the app store which took me to a page entitled "Results for 'http'." What is going on? I have Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Internet Explorer installed on my computer, and they showed up on the list of apps under "Apps and Features."
I tried to choose an app by file type and by protocol, but got the same results. I also tried to set defaults by app, and upon selecting Google Chrome from the list, clicked "Set this program as default," but nothing changed. What should I do to fix this?

Mar 5, 2016so before I wiped my entire PC the sound was working flawlessly - I would use the audio inputs for the Razer Blackwidow Chroma and it would work perfectly.Since the reset however, no sound has been discoverable, I get a red x on my speaker, and it says "No audio drivers installed" on "Playback Devices" I have tried putting my headphones in every audio jack on my PC (front, back and keyboard) and it still isn't picking my headphones up, I have installed the latest drivers and still no joy.

The install got to around 20% and now I'm stuck on a black screen with "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I have gone into BIOS and changed boot order around but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I went through this process on the computer before, but I selected the wrong edition. The process eventually just stopped (closed the window). When I try to run the tool again, it just goes straight to the "downloading..." part of the process.

Oct 9, 2015MacBook late 2009 running parallels. Originally upgraded when Win 8 was installed. Win 10 upgrade loaded Home. Removed Win 10, upgraded to Win 8.1. Now when I try to reload Win 10, it will not install Pro, only Home.
When I go to change product key under activation, it will not let me change serial number. (Old Win 8.0 Serial Number)
Clarification: Cannot even select change product key. I only get a "ding".

Dec 31, 2015Just bought a new HP Pavilion x2 (laptop/tablet hybrid) and it has been working perfectly for about a week. Suddenly went to start it up and it had done some updates which has left me with no audio. When I open up the Sound through search, under the Playback tab there is only "No Audio Devices are Installed" (with both Show Disabled and Disconnected Devices ticked).
I have gone through device manager and under Sound, Video and game controllers there is only: "Conexant I2S Audio Codec" as a driver. I have uninstalled this, reinstalled it, updated driver software (from my computer and internet), disabled it, added legacy hardware and tried a varied combination of these from various forums and guides and nothing has worked. There is still a little red x next to my volume control. My speakers are B&O (says so on the side of the screen).

I unplugged my headphones to see if that would fix the problem but of course it didn't. I don't know what to do i tried doing something else where i had to change my files to classic but i didn't see any General tab.

Aug 11, 2015I've upgraded my ASUS U36SG from Windows 8.1 Professional to Windows 10 Enterprise. Everything went fine unless the issue "no audio output devices are installed",
I've tried almost all the solutions for that problem in other similar threads without any success.
Consider that now, in my Device Manager I can see this (OS is in italian):
Both Microsoft and Realtek HD Audio Driver up to date to their last version.
But, no audio (or microphone) device:
I also write to ASUS and they first suggested me to install a legacy version of the Realtek Audio Driver (v 6..0.1.7503) then to rollback to Windows 7 Pro (I'm not joking...)

Installation :: How To Boot From Newly Installed SSD
Nov 12, 2015I just installed a new SSD (disk 1) on my laptop and used Samsung's tool to clone my OS drive (C: on disk 2) onto it. This was done with no error, however I cannot boot from the new SSD in bios, as this hangs up the computer.
I assume this has to do with C: still being the boot and active partition, and the system partition (also active) being on Disk 0 (HDD).
I attached my disk management screenshot for reference.
How to make my new SSD (disk 1) the boot drive? For info, I do not have a windows OS CD but already created a windows 10 repair disk.

Oct 17, 2015I've just bought a new SSD (Samsung EVO 850 250GB) for my Dell XPS 15 (L521x). After I inserted it into my laptop i intalled Windows 10 Home Pro. The installation process happened without any error, the laptop restarted several times (which is normal during the installation) and then booted to the desktop. again, no error whatsover. now, when i try to turn off or reboot my laptop, it is not able to power off automatically (i've waited for over an hour). so i have to power it off forcefully by pressing the power button for several seconds). if i want to reboot the laptop, it gets stuck at the dell logo, the little circle is spinning but nothing else is happening. i have updated all drivers, tried to boot into safe-mode, nothing worked
The current bios version is up to date (A16), SATA operation mode is AHCI, according to Samsung Magician (which i was able to install) everything is configured correctly.

Sep 19, 2015Got a perfect upgrade from Win7 Pro to Win10 Pro for any programs that were on the boot disk. However any programs that were loaded on a second (non-bootable) disk were not recognized at all. Is there any way, other than reloading all those programs, to get Win10 Pro to know they are there? I thought this would be caught when the system upgraded but this did not happen. I was trying to keep my boot drive lean and mean.

Aug 5, 2015I have a Acer Aspire XC-603G desktop upgraded to Windows 10 64bit Home (no Hyper-V). I want to run 16 bit software that is incompatible. I would like to dual boot with Vista x86 (gave away my XP). From what I understand, you must load the older version first due to Windows 10's MBR. Can I backup/clone Windows 10 partition, reformat and repartition the HDD, install Vista in first partition, then restore Windows 10 to the second partition? I'm thinking I'll need a fresh Windows 10 install. Or is there a simpler way? The only other way I see is to buy the Pro upgrade to get Hyper-V. And if I did the latter would it really be compatible with my Windows 95 16bit ImageReader Scanner software?

Laptop is an Asus x550c.
System recovery to Asus factory default.
Asus has a default 4 Partition setup. I added a 5th, Partition 6, by shrinking Partition 4
Looks something like this:
Drive 0 Partition 3 128MB MSR (Reserved)
Drive 0 Partition 4 OS 395GB Primary
Drive 0 Partition 5 451MB Recovery
Drive 0 Partition 6 New Volume 48GB Primary
Drive 0 Partition 7 Restore 20GB Recovery
I'm using the new Build 10130 iso which just came out.I don't want to use a VM like I have on a Desktop.

Aug 7, 2015I have upgraded my laptop Asus k43s from windows 7 to windows 10. Everything went fine but then I decided to reset the laptop to have a fresh start. After resetting, my sound button has a red x mark on it saying that "No audio output device is installed". So I go to the device manager to check things out and it says that the drivers are functioning well. I have 4 Nvidia high definition audio and 1 realtek high definition audio(don't know why so many). I tried to disable and enable but no luck. I also tried to do a reset again to check if something went wrong on my first reset but still after the 2nd reset I still get the same problem.

Dec 23, 2015I was installing a new printer on a Windows 10 home computer today in an office. The other PC's I upgraded to Win 10 from 7, no problems. This PC is a relatively new one that came with 10 pre-installed when they purchased it. When installing the new printer a couple of the pc's (including this one), had a duplicate entry (I am thinking they must have tried to install it themselves at some point and failed, though they hadn't told me that).
On the other PC I was able to go into 'print management' and remove the duplicate entry, then reinstall and everything is fine. On the "new" PC however, 'printmanagement.msc' is completely missing. I tried bringing it up with the searchbar first, it didn't find it. So I went via the admin panel and there was no shortcut. Launching from cmd line did nothing. On the other computer I was able to find 'printmanagement.msc' in the system32 folder, but on this computer it is not present in that folder at all.
I did some searching on MS and Google, and only found instructions for installing the snap-in via Windows Server 2003/2008. How I can (re)install this component on that PC using Windows 10 Home? It seems odd to me that would be missing in the first place. Perhaps this is an easy answer and my GoogleFu is weak on this occasion, but I couldn't find any references to not having printmanager present on a native Windows 10 install. I didn't turn up any kind of download for it on the Microsoft site, but as I said, perhaps I'm just "missing" it.
I just realized I should have tried an sfc /scannow, but didn't think of that until I was writing this.

Oct 15, 2015I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit on a desktop and I have never requested the W10 upgrade. Two days ago when I went to Windows update I got a surprise. The screen below showed up!
My update options was changed to automatic from notify me and I can't install some real W7 updates waiting in the wings.
I worked with Microsoft Support for 2 hours yesterday evening and nothing has really changed. The Get Windows 10 app KB3035583 was uninstalled and so was KB2952664. How to get the Windows Update screen back to allowing other updates. I'd like to be able to put the waiting updates on and put W10 on sometime later this year. I don't understand why I am being forced to do the upgrade.
