Installation :: Setting Data Pathway To HDD On SSD?
Sep 8, 2015
After suffering an HDD failure on my Lenovo Y500 Ideapad, I opted to replace the HDD with an SSD as the :C drive to run the OS and software applications and to install a new HDD in the ultrabay as the drive to hold all data. This was done at a shop which then did a clean install of Windows 10 onto the SSD for me.
All good so far, but the default pathway for data is still set to the SSD. I want to keep my data on the HDD and I don't want to drag and drop it from the SSD every time I need to save or import something; otherwise, I could just be using an external back-up drive. How do I set the default pathway for data (documents, music, photos, downloaded .pdfs, etc) to the HDD?
Seems like it should be straightforward but I'm a novice. Haven't found specific directions for this in Windows 10 and it looks to be somewhat different than those described for Windows 7. I want to make sure that downloaded applications and the like still go to the SSD. And I'm concerned about making changes that might mess up the registry.
Suddenly, the SSD/HDD configuration is seeming a little overly-complicated and maybe even out of date. Possibly I should have sprung for a bigger SSD and left it at that, but this is what I've got so I'd like to make it work.

When I try to install Windows 10 update, the installation freezes at 91% Setting configuration. (67% overall). I do not get any error message. I have tried various ways, Clean boot, Media creation tool etc. I have left the computer 4 hours in case it was not frozen, even though I could not detect any HDD activity.
The machine does not revert back to windows 7 as it says it is doing, but instead I get a black scree telling me status 0xC000000e . "Info boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Looking this up it would seem to indicate the winload exe is missing or corrupt. I do not have any problem booting up my machine, normally, but was wondering, if it could be that, there is something wrong with my MBR and that is why, perhaps ( I am clutching at straws) windows 10 will not install.
The windows rescue disk, does not get me back, as when asking for a repair, there is no C drive showing, so I revert to my good old Acronis software. Without which I would be in big trouble.

So I managed to break my partition table, but I was able to recover my entire C: drive and copy every file and folder to an external drive. My question now becomes, is there anyway to, when I reinstall Windows, to restore from that backup (since it's just a data backup of files and folders, not a system image)? Would booting into linux (so that partition isn't in use by Windows) and simply copy-past-overwriting the old files effectively give me my system back?

My system install of build 10162 won't activate, as they pulled the validation from these builds. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade to 10240, which can, I was told by Windows support, be activated. This is because Windows isn't already activated!!! (Windows Update won't download it (it always stays at 0% )).
To solve this, I want to upgrade manually and thus I flashed the ISO on a blank USB stick. Can I keep all my data and app settings, etc. if I upgrade using the ISO on the stick? Or, in other words, is it possible to "upgrade" when installing an ISO, or do I have to do a clean install?

Wondering how Windows 10 deals with putting data on a separate partition or drive. Does it use the same general method as in Windows 7, where it re-maps (for example) "Documents" to a folder on a different letter drive path? So that C:Users{user}Documents becomes G:Users{user}Documents?
I'm hoping that it actually becomes more like *nix, using symbolic links to point to the right place (so C:Users{user}Documents points to the separate partition of drive). Personally, I find the Win7 method to be clunky and problematic in actual use.

I was running win 7 with 4 partitions , thought to upgrade to win 10. While installing it didn't allowed me to install. I thought i can run diskpart clean on one partition, selected one volume and ran clean command, but it still cleaned all the partitions. Long story short, I cannot boot my OS until I install OS on freshly created single partition. I was told to use partition recovery apps like partition and mount software, Do I have to install OS on it anyways and once OS is installed, instal the partition and mount software for the recovery?

The old one is perfectly serviceable, but slow (i3-2365M, 1TB hdd, 8Gb mem, on-chip graphics ). The new one is a i7-6700HQ, 512Gb sdd, 1TBhdd, 16Gb mem, NVIDIAGeForce GTX 960M . Both laptops have Windows 10 OS. How can I transfer my files, data, settings and programs to the new laptop?

I used my Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS to create data file back-ups to an external hard drive. I bought and used the Win 10 Home 64 bit disk to install Win 10. I have copied the " Backup Set" to my C drive, but I can not open any files. Vista was "Backup & Restore"..... Is Restore different from copying?

So recently Windows 10 came out and I manually downloaded the Media Creation tool and started upgrading my PC BUT I had to turn it off and all of the data that it downloaded has taken up my small amount of space in my SSD (I only have 16 GB left) where does this tool store all of it's data so I could delete it.

I've been considering shrinking my one disk (disk 0) to create another volume, a data partition, but I'm still not clear what happens in the event that I want to refresh, reset or clean install Windows 10 in the future. Would the data partition remain or, as I thought I read, Windows will format the entire disk?

The error that comes up is "0x80070004 - 0x4000D The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation."
I have removed all 3rd party antivirus, and a bunch of other fixes. A

I am in the process of attempting to install Windows 10 on the system listed in my profile. I have downloaded Windows 10 as an ISO and transferred this to an NTFS formatted memory stick. The installation process works ok but I am having problems getting the SSD setup for UEFI mode and secure boot. what settings I need to apply under CSM to get the SSD running in UEFI mode? And if there are any other settings needed?

So at my work and home I have been setting up Bitlocker. Today at work I was setting up Bitlocker on a PC and we could not get a password for a option to unlock the device. The only option we get is to either use a USB or a pin. As per the compliance officer we have to require an encryption passphrase upon boot and I am not big on pins. How do I get my passphrase ability back?

So I thought I'd give Cortana a try since I can turn it off again if I don't want it, however I get to the point where it makes me login, I enter my email address and password and then it takes me to the next step where it tells me something like you need to enter your current password just one more time.
I enter the same password one last time and it tells me it's wrong.
I go through it all over again and reset my password and try again, go though the first login and get to the second stage where it asks me to enter my password one "last" time, and I do and it tells me it's wrong again.
Try a third time, this time leaving the password blank on the 2nd step and still fails.
Edit: I know the password is correct as I've used it to login to live this morning, so not sure why it's not accepting it in the 2nd stage of the Cortana setup.

I've been using Windows 10 set up exactly as I wanted it since my original installation. Today I wanted to set up Cortana. It was suggested that I use a PIN instead of a password. I thought this was just for Cortana so I agreed. Now my whole system has been changed. I have to log in with my Microsoft account which I never had to do and don't want to do. How can I get back to my original name with no long-in at startup.

What is the deal with windows and contrast? For many years windows has been lowering the contrast to the point that now with windows ten it is often impossible to see. The box I'm typing this in is basically invisible. The scroll bars are gone and I have to find them by waving my mouse around until I cross it. The selected link in my side bar is reduced to a then slightly grey line that simply cannot be located. This is just silly.
Is there any setting that can get some contrast back? And I don't mean the text contrast. I can read text fine. It is the controls, gadgets and highlighting that needs to be fixed.

I got a new laptop (Pavilion 17) and first time using windows 10.
Problem 1 - I originally had to turn on scrolling for the click pad which was yesterday. Now today scrolling was turned off and I had to turn it back on again. Stopped using computer last night while it was copying files over (via network). Computer was left open and running.
Problem 2 - This morning the network was completely disconnected and I had to go in and 'join the network' again. I did have to 2 this 3 times yesterday while I was using the computer as well.
Problem 3 - This morning all my windows had been closed? Explorer windows that were being used to copy and firefox also.

I don't particularly want to have both a PIN and a password - it seems 100% pointless.
Is there any way to enable Windows Hello's biometric login options without setting a PIN?

As my desktop PC (like a lot of I suspect other PC's) doesn't have built in GPS, it means that whenever Windows 10 tries to automatically determine where am I (for example, when I'm looking at the built in map client, or Cortana is finding something nearby) it actually thinks I'm around 70 miles away.
Is there any way to manually set my actual location more accurately in Windows 10?

I am irritated by the "Windows 8" apps screen, set as my default. It shows all the tiles I need and seems to work well enough, but if (for example) I go into emails and then want to come out, I'm taken back to the start menu and must click on "Windows 8" again to open the apps screen.
Is there any way I can change settings so I'm returned immediately to the apps screen? I know it's just a couple more clicks but it seems so pointless to be slowed down every time in that way.

For some time, I have been using OneDrive on my 'phone (successfully, but limited to only a few files and photos).I've now tried to set it up on my Laptop, with a view to linking and uploading all my files - Documents, Pictures etc. However, in the setup 'wizard', I'm not presented with the option of linking any of the Folders on my Laptop - instead, I can only see the 2 existing folders that currently appear in my online OneDrive account (i.e. those which I originally set up from my 'phone).

I would like most of my folders to open with Details for the view. Then when I want it differently I can change it. It seems like every time I open a new folder or one that has not yet been opened within 10 they all are large icons which provide little information.
Is there a way to set a one time default for all folders? Also is there a way set a default for a folder tree?
