Installation :: Unable To Reserve Upgrade?
Aug 15, 2015
I am trying to upgrade to Windows 10. I clicked on the flag symbol and a box appeared with a spinning wheel and the message please wait. I waited and waited for 2 hours on numerous occasions but nothing happened and now I recieve a message saying "reserve your upgrade now" but the link still dousent work. Is there anouther way I can upgrade for free.? I dont know if its because millions of people are trying to connect at once or what. What appears in the box when it opens. I have Windows 7, legal as far as I know as I got the computer secondhand.

System stats...Athlon 860K, Asus A55BM-E, GeForce 550Ti, 8GB Ram
Win 8.1 was installed from retail DVD onto a virgin 500GB mechanical HDD. I upgraded shortly after to a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD and cloned the mechanical drive over, tested, and then formatted the mechanical drive for data. I got some real strange (to me) drive partitions - 100MB 'Data' drive which is almost full (cannot access) and a 350MB 'System Reserve' drive. The mechanical drive is a separate letter and all seems to work swimmingly. I sort of assumed this was normal.
Upon installing WinX I get the above error...from what i've read, people are having challenges moving from Win7 due to the fact that this reserve drive is only 100MB and it needs to be 300-450...well, mine's 350mb so not sure what gives.

Every time I try to update and install windows 10 I get this error. It seems as if my reserve partition is too small to download windows 10. How would I go about fixing this issue. I have had a dual boot of linux in the past but got rid of it months ago.

This is the 2nd system (my wife's computer) we want to run Windows 10. Currently that system is running windows 7 Pro. The first system system went without a single hitch and it was running windows 7 Pro as well.. The download was complete so I was ready for the upgrade. I started the installation and the first thing I got the comment "We couldn't update The System Reserve Partition". I cannot find any documentation on this message.

I have a feeling this is bios/uefi related
Got a sabertooth z77 with two ssd on raid 0 (intel) another hard drive for backups (Regular sata) and another storage card (pciexpress sas highpoint 2720, with raid 5)
Windows 10 doesnt seem to like this.
Even booting the dvd itself its a drag and hr wont recognize the raid 0 not even with drivers (driver load will cause a watchdog blue screen)
Windows 7 and 8 dont mind. At all.
I feel like the csm thingy might have something to do.
Bios is latest. Sas raid is for storage only. Ill search for the manual of the board as the printed one doesnt have the options i got on the screen

I used MiniTool Partition wizard to migrate the OS from my HDD to a new SSD. Process worked fine and the SSD booted. Problem is when I try to do an inplace upgrade to Windows 10 Insider preview on the SSD. The installation stops with the message that windows cannot be installed to a USB drive. Perhaps the problem is that there is no hidden system partition on the SSD?

Anyhow I am currently using windows 7 (not a fan of windows 8). Since windows 10 is released I wanted to install and try it. Initially I installed windows 8.1 in my D: drive (works normally as far as I can tell), and upgrade it to windows 10. I am keeping my windows 7 in drive C: as I do not have any other working computer if the installation failed.
So halfway upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10, the upgrade failed and a restart is needed. When restarting I tried to reset the installation but even that is failed. When restarted again there is no operating system in that drive (drive D: ) ??
Currently I tried to reformat my drive D: (windows 10) with my current windows 7 (installed in drive C) but it says the volume is in use by another process but it refused.
Summary
Drive C: - windows 7, still functioning properly
Drive D - where windows 8.1 is located and upgraded to windows 10 but failed, currently cannot detect any os when I boot from drive D: , and cant format the drive.
I know its really complicated the way i installed my windows 8.1 with my windows 7 intact, but I'm worried if the installation failed, I have no backup computer to fall back.

I put off reserving Windows 10, I had the icon in my tray for months, but never got around to it. Now the icon is gone(as of just today I believe), but Windows Update has box above update information where you can reserve Win10. Problem is, the reserve button and the "Learn More" link in the box are both non-functioning. Is it even necessary that I use this or would just downloading straight from Microsoft's website suffice?

I have a situation where I need drives F and G available for scheduled file backups, and I like to play a game which involves mounting an ISO as a virtual drive, which would normally become F. Earlier today, I discovered a way to keep F and G available by creating to small ISOs and putting shortcuts to them in the startup folder. Then at backup time, I can just unmount drives F and G and plug in the flash drives. That seems to work fine, but since it seems a bit awkward to create ISOs just for that purpose, I was wondering whether there might be another way.

I just installed a Samsung Evo 850 SSD and then installed Windows 10 to it. I was previously duel booting Win10 and Win7 as I didn't want to fully commit to Win10 until I had some time with it. I decided I like it enough to have it as my sole OS so when I got my new SSD I've formatted the two old drives containing Win10 and Win7 and just did a clean install of Win10 on the new SSD.
After the installation I wanted to join the two old drives together using storage space because I have also ordered a 4TB HDD and wanted to consolidate my other ones into one drive. It was when i did this I noticed that the system reserve folder was still on the old drive and no matter what I do I can't deactivate it or delete the partition.
So how to remove the partition from that drive.

I had Windows 7 installed on one HDD and XP installed on secondary HDD. When I initially installed W7, it set up a boot screen which enabled me to access and run XP. After I upgraded to W10 and I try to start XP by booting from the secondary HDD, it pops up with the W7 boot select screen and, when I select to run "Earlier version of Windows", it goes to a black screen with no HDD activity.
Before you ask why I still have XP, I run a number of programs for design and game modding which are NOT compatible with later versions of Windows, even when using the so-called compatibility modes.
Is there any way I can eliminate the residual W7 boot select screen?

As the windows update route isn't working on my two Windows 7 PC's and my Windows 8.1 tablet i tried out the mediacreationtoolx64 file from microsoft with which you should be able to upgrade to windows 10.
However the stupid developers from microsoft has decided that if you live in denmark you MUST want to install a danish version of windows 10, regardless of the language you're using in your current windows.. A side effect to this is that you cannot upgrade and keep your settings and apps due to the language difference... Such a nice move from microsoft!
I tried changing my location settings in control panel but this hasn't worked. How i can get it to install an english version of windows 10 instead of a danish one?

I tried the Windows 10 upgrade when it first came out and immediately went back to 8.1 when I couldn't get a single one of my internal SATA hard drives to mount.. I have 5 of them, and I just wasn't about to mess with that when 8.1 had no problems at all. Now I have tried it again and the same problem is happening. I want to see if I can figure it out this time. I am using the latest SATA and Chipset drivers for Win10 64 bit from Gigabyte's Website (I am using a Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Rev. 1.1.
I am "testing" Win10 using a bootable clone of my main SSD (that still has 8.1 on it) and I upgraded it to 10 just to mess with so I can figure out this ridiculous problem.
My problem is that all of my internal SATA hard drives (with the exception of the system drive) cannot be assigned a drive letter in Disk Management. They show as healthy NTFS partitions but I get 1 of 2 different errors when I click on "Change Drive letters and Paths":
1. "Virtual Disk Manager: The System cannot find the file specified."
2 "Disk Management: The operation filed to complete because the Disk Management Console view is not up-to date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart disk management or restart the computer" Hint: none of the recommended fixes in the error message change anything.
I HAVE been able to assign the partitions a letter and mount them using a third party disk manager called "MiniTool Partition Wizard". It lets me mount the partitions and it works! ..However, if I restart the computer, I am back to square one and have to manually assign each drive letter for each partition every time.
This is easily the worst experience I have ever had upgrading an OS, and one of the most mind boggling issues I have had with Windows in general. I really like Windows 10 and want to keep using it but half of my hard drives being un-mountable is a complete deal breaker right now.

I've been suffering from the whole "start menu isn't working, here have this lovely critical error" issue for quite some time now. I've brushed it off as a nuisance and tried to ignore it, but it's really just starting to limit the functionality of my PC so I'm trying to get it resolved.
Most recently, I tried to reset my computer through Settings (keeping all of my files). It starts the process, reboots my PC to a screen that asks me to select the layout of my keyboard... but I've lost all functionality of my mouse and keyboard in the process. I can't select anything to get beyond the screen. I've tried another mouse with no success.
