Installation :: Will Not Install On A System With Pentium G3258 CPU
Aug 1, 2015
Microsoft released an update (specifically KB3064209) in June (2015) for Windows 7 that effectively caused a system with an Intel Pentium G3258 processor to not boot after the update was applied.
Interestingly, it DID boot successfully but the screen remained black. The screen works perfectly fine up until just an instant after the 'Starting Windows' logo displayed, then the black screen.
This was not motherboard manufacturer/video card/video driver/etc. specific. It happened on many different configurations with the only common factors being the G3258 CPU, Windows 7, and the KB3064209 Update.
Fast forward to the the wonderful, new, shiny Windows 10 officially released a couple of days ago.
Windows 10 Will Not Install On a System With a Pentium G3258 CPU! (In almost every case)
Neither trying the install through 'updates' nor trying the install with an ISO image will work.
The installation fails with this error:
"We couldn't install Windows 10
0xC1900101 - 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during boot operations"
As I predicted in other forums, this issue has come back to haunt us with a vengeance after most of us agreed that simply not installing the Update 3064209 was a 'fix' to it causing the headache in Windows 7.
In Windows 10, this is not an 'update' that you can elect to not install, it is internal to the Windows 10 code.
Microsoft blames Intel, Intel blames Microsoft, and just a very, very few motherboard companies (1 that I know of; Asus) have issued a BIOS update which supposedly fixes this.
Some reports say that Intel has agreed to "look into the problem but it may take a few weeks."
A huge amount of discussion in other forums offers two possible workarounds:
1) Removing ALL overclocking of the CPU (a few people have said this allows a successful Windows 10 install)
2) (And this is just ridiculously unacceptable), going into the UEFI BIOS and disabling one of the cores of the CPU. However, the reports are that 100% of the time, this allows a successful installation of Windows 10.
99% of Pentium G3258 owners who want to install Windows 10 (and perhaps selfishly want to use both cores), we are out of luck for the foreseeable future.
A lot of reports are that a couple of the Windows 10 Preview versions did not have this problem, but the final 29 July 2015 release does.
There is a large number of motherboard owners who have somehow gotten the mistaken impression that you're golden if you have a Z series motherboard. Mine is a Z87 and the problem is present with it. So don't waste your money thinking you can just buy a new Z87/Z97/Z99 and the problem will magically go away, it won't.
Note: I will burn in Hades before I disable a CPU core to allow some BS 'fix' to a Microsoft/Intel complete and absolute debacle.
I'll guess I'll remain a faithful Win 7 x64 user for some time to come, it looks like.

I have seen in different forums that people have had trouble with Windows 10 and Intel Pentium G3258. Do Windows 10 actually works on the G3258 or should I just stick with Windows 8.1 ....

I have two systems.System 1 is a desktop running W7 Premium SP1. I did clean install of W10 from iso on separate partition. W10 will not activate using W7 numbers. I suspect that is because I moved W7 to an SSD 6 mos. ago and W10 expects the old HDD. BTW, installed W10 to partition on the SSD
System 2 is dual boot laptop (Dell Inspiron) with W7 SP1 and W8.1. I want to keep W7, and I could try W10 install either by upgrading 8.1 or clean install to the 8.1 partition. Reccomendations? I don't want to risk losing the W7. I do have disk image backups of both W7 and W8.1.

I've rescued an old small server(working with Red Hat enterprise -- but I can't have the OS as it's licensed by the office) from our office --was being chucked out but looks quite good to me.
4 SATA bays populated with 4X 3TB HDD's (the HDD's were mine BTW !!!). I'm thinking of using this as a NAS server - 16 GB RAM and decent Intel CPU (i3 equivalent -- good enough for media server).
The only problem is that it's MBR BIOS and I have two RAID 0 arrays consisting of 2 X 2 3TB HDD's.
Installing Windows though -- No HDD's seen !!! yet there's 12 TB of them in the system.
The RAID is onboard --not a separate RAID controller.
Should I remove the HDD's and send the server on it's original journey to a one way trip to the City's TIP.
(On board VGA good enough also for running a GUI - if I can ever install an OS on it -- preferably W10).

Does not meet system requirements
Get Important updates: cleared.
Gets windows 10 ready but then it
Checks requirements:
Windows does not prompt any choices,
We couldn't update the system partition
Dialog crashes.
Does not allow one to choose which partition
Gateway Nv59
64 bit Intel 430m Duo core
Windows 7 Premium
500GB hdd
8GB Gskill ram 1333mhz
Take note here that I cannot merge any of the disks, they all result in error or System lock. I can't make the 35MB system disk larger, but Easeus, Windows disk formatter and some other major ones I've tried just say No. But the problem is windows 10 doesn't give me the choice to overwrite the C or H which is quite large enough.
Take note that i just used the SAME flash drive to boot/install windows 10 to a friends lower spec Intel i3 laptop with 1/2 as much ram from Win 7 BASIC. Don't tell me It's not powerful enough..

My computer is trying to install Update to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586, but can't. It claims there is no system reserved partition, but there is. This computer was upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, and immediately after doing that I installed a Samsung SSD and migrated the system to it using the software that came with the SSD. The migration went well and I've been using Windows 10 for months.
All of a sudden, when trying to do some updates it claims it cannot update the system reserved partition. The partition is there, it's 100MB in size. So I tried booting from the install CD, which I burned to do the upgrade (so I know it's a good disc). My computer recognizes there's a disc in the DVD drive, but no matter how I set the bios boot order it will not boot from the DVD, so I can't do a repair on the SSD.

Is there any advantage to doing a clean install over just doing the system refresh in settings?

My build is unstable and I upgraded... 1st time around and it was for the most part stable. I had some lag issues; when system was left to idle, system would not respond or the system would take forever to perform tasks, and hardware install issues; plug and play pick up and drop. Couple of blue Screens, I run a custom build over clocked and it is my first one so I expected this to happen.
So I decided to do a clean install
System Specs (BUILD):
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Formula
Processor: Intel i7-4770K
Memory: (part number)-G.Skill [TridentX] F3-2400C10D-16GTX
Graphics Card #1: SAPPHIRE R9 290 4GB GDDR5
[Code] ....
I have updated motherboard BIOS and rolled them back.
I have manually downloaded new drivers from Asus & AMD websites for 64-bit operating system: Windows 10 as well as let Windows install threw the auto up date program, and full system lockup/crashed are consistent; lock-up none blue screen.
Regional and language match. tch
System says Window is activated.
Ran admin command prompt sfc /scannow with no errors.
On
my probably 13 fresh install config., would really like some insight into what might be happening to cause these system lockup issues, reading and posting on forms from my smart phone isn't the finest thing to do.

I have been trying for hours to install windows 10 home on my newly built PC but i can't because there is a problem. I bought the usb version since i don't have an optical drive bay.
The problem: I can start the setup, but when i launch the installation my pc suddenly restarts and boots the usb again, so i get back at the 32/64 bit selection screen. This happens when i click "next" after choosing my drive (see included video). The drive i'm using is a Samsung 850 EVO SSD.
I have tried numerous things to fix it including: removing the ram (2x8GB) and putting it back, trying with one ram stick, removing the graphics card and use the integrated graphics card, use different usb ports, use different sata ports, removing the hdd (i can't even start the setup with the hdd plugged in).
I also downloaded Windows 10 from the official website and put it on an other usb stick, the same problem occurs.
I even tried with Ubuntu and the same problem happens!! When i launch the installation my pc reboots and the setup restarts!
I have made a video showing what happens (win 10): OS installation problem - YouTube
I also made a video that shows my BIOS: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3 BIOS - YouTube

I am building a new computer. I am still waiting for my CPU and mother board to arrive, but already have my SSD and Windows 10 (retail) setup disk.
Are there any potential drawbacks if I connect my SSD to my current computer and perform the Windows 10 installation on it?
The things I heard about Windows 10 'fusing' itself to one's hardware is relevant only to the OEM version - am I correct?

Installed a Samsung SSD on my Asus CM6730-06 desktop running Win7. the Win7 OS was cloned from the Asus Pc to Samsung SSD. Windows 7 runs great off the SSD. Got a Windows 10 upgrade notice and received an automatic download of Win10 but when it tries to install I get the message "Windows 10 couldn't be installed". "We couldn't update the system reserved partition". I would like to upgrade to Win10 on this pc.

My dell 7500 has windows 7(C: drive) and windows 10(F: drive) installed on the single internal HDD. It also has three USB disks used only for data. When I boot I get a message saying that an operating system cannot be found and I should try unplugging my USB drives and then reboot. When I unplug the USB drives and re boot, it finds the windows systems and finishes the boot process with no trouble.
Checking the BIOS shows only the CD-Rom drive and the three USB drives are listed in the boot order and the drive listing. I then deactivated the "boot from USB drives" item in my BIOS and then the computer boots fine.
Also, I have been experimenting with Ubuntu on a USB pen drive but have removed it. I suspect that there are some parts of grub hanging around.

There are 3 boxes that refer to Win 10 installation and when you try to delete them it says you will not be able to go back to your previous OS.It is substantial space as I believe one box contains something like x amount of GB's.I have imaged Win 10 so I think could delete them but isn't it more likely I should keep them in case I need to go back and an image failed? Is it subjective or is there a rule of thumb regarding this issue?

I have an SSD with WIN7 installed. It has no System Reserved Partition (SRP) and thus no boot files on that nonexistent partition.
I've read here that individuals with a SRP of only 100mb have had issues installing WIN 10 and that those issues were resolved by expanding the SRP from 100mb to 450mb.
Will WIN 10 install if I have no SRP? Will it merely alter the boot files on my C drive?

I just installed windows 10 onto my first SSD (Made it my master drive) and i'd like to delete every file and folder on my old HDD except the one in which all my games are installed (Not program files its a folder labeled "Games" in the root directory).
But I keep needing permission from "SYSTEM" Or "TrustedInstaller" to remove them. Do i have to use the "take Ownership" Regedit to do it? or is there some faster way?..
Also i do not have another drive to move the games to that would allow me to format the HDD.

I have a brand new Dell XPS 8700 with Win 8.1 Home installed, 1 TB hdd.
I want to update to Windows 10.
I have a 120GB SSD that I would like to use for the system.
Are there updates to 8.1 and related that should be done before upgrading to 10?
Should 8.1 be installed on the SSD before upgrading to 10? I have ordered the 8.1 install/re-install disks from Dell and they should be here in a few days if needed for this exercise.
Or if it is better to upgrade to 10 on the existing hdd, how do I re-install it on the SSD...

Not sure what to do. I did find a page to uninstall Win 10, but I'm not sure it would do it correctly without the internet. I'm not even sure if it would work because I was afraid to try it. It is a HP computer and it was running on 8.1. I'm using my spouse's computer to post this.

Basically, I got fed up with the daily problems from doing an "upgrade" from Win8.1 to Win10TP 32-bit and decided to install afresh from the latest ISO. Since I have a 64-bit processor and 8GB of memory (now) I thought I'd try the 64-bit version.
Booted from the USB stick, chose Install, clicked next, saw the drive with the formatted NTFS primary partition (empty) for Win10 and select that ...
And got the dreaded "we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. See the setup log files".
OK...
So, I removed the partition, leaving an unallocated drive, and using the "New" icon, created a new one. That appeared to go OK. Selected it -- and got the same error message again!
Went through the same stuff with the 32-bit version -- same sequence, same error messages.
So, I have two questions:
1) When you're in the installer, how do you look at the setup log files to see the detail messages?
2) What is the "secret" to installing Win10 on an SSD? (Note, I had Win8 install just fine to this same SSD (Crucial 120GB) and move Win8.1 to a larger SSD when I bought a new one. So, I know this SSD works OK.
I ran into this same bunch of problems with the original Win10TP install -- which is why I ended up cloning Win8.1 to this SSD and then doing an "upgrade". But this time, I want to do a clean install...

OK, so I change my disk to MBR and get the same problem only this time it tells me the selected disk is of the MBR style. Either way it won't install. What do I do now???? ?
