I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 10. Now I would like to have a multi-boot. If I install Windows 7 on my blank 150 GB partition, will Windows 10's boot sequence recognize it so that I have a working multi-boot?
View 1 RepliesThis is probably the most painful issue I have with Windows 10 right now (and likely previous versions as well, but I didn't have a multi-monitor setup back then).
The monitors I have are as follows: 3840x2160 (4K UHD) monitor with preferred DPI: 144 (150%)1920x1080 (Full HD) monitor with preferred DPI: 96 (100%)
Whenever one of these monitors are set as primary, all desktop applications displayed on the secondary monitor (doesn't matter which) has blurry text. Exceptions are the Windows Store Apps like Windows Store and Microsoft Edge, along with the Taskbar/Start Menu, the Taskbar/Start Menu settings screen, the Taskbar context menu, and the desktop context menu which passes the DPI test with flying colours, with crispy text on both monitors (occasionally a DPI switch bug gets in, but I can mostly ignore that). The problem is, as you can probably guess, is that >99% of the applications I use aren't Windows Store Apps.
Here are some screenshots. The "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" text is what the text should look like while the Visual Studio 2015 text is an example of the text most desktop apps get. The blurry image is what happens when the UHD monitor is not the primary monitor. Attachment 48493Attachment 48494 Note: Both of these screenshots came from the 150% DPI monitor so it's best viewed at that (144) DPI level. The 96 DPI monitor is similarly affected.
Things I've already tried: Reinstall the graphics driver. Did this multiple times in fact for unrelated reasons.Reinstall Windows 10 (through Reset This PC recovery option). I did this for also unrelated reasons but it definitely doesn't fix this issue.Use the XP Explorer "fix". Merely worsens the problem. Adjusting Clear Type options. Alleviates the issue a bit but see next point.Disabling Clear Type on the affected monitor. The text obviously sharpens, but it's painful to read and a close inspection of the text reveals the issue isn't solved at all, only mitigated slightly.Replacing the video card. I swapped this in with my older GTX 560 Ti but it's obvious the problem remains. Both it and my current card are NVIDIAs though, so it's vaguely possible the drivers or the cards themselves are the cause. I don't have an ATI/AMD card (that still works, at least) to test the setup and every Intel iGPU I have either has only one monitor output or is incapable of handling UHD resolutions.
Things I won't try: Setting both monitors' DPI to 96. Text would become microscopic considering the UHD monitor's actual size.Use the text resizing feature instead. I'm going take a wild guess that this is not monitor-specific and would cause everything on the HD monitor to be far too large to the point that I'd rather unplug it.
Looking for multi-resolution, multi-DPI, multi-monitor setup with or without this issue? The text is painful to read on whichever is the secondary monitor right now, and is extremely apparent whenever the background is dark.
I had Win7 and did the free upgrade to Win10.
Before the upgrade I was smart enough to do a complete system image of Win7.
1. If I disconnect the Drive that Win10 is installed on and reinstall Win7 on a different drive, can I use the system image to recover Win7 back to the state it was before the upgrade?
2. Reconnect the Win10 drive and and boot up the system, will system ask which OS I want to boot up with at that point or will there be a conflict?
It's not that I don't like Win10 given I just upgraded on Thursday, September 17th and I need time to fully go thur all the operations and functions. I want to get a reasonable working knowledge and understanding of the Win7 OS, till I do I want the ability to keep and use Win7.
It took me quite some time to migrate from XP Pro to Win7 because I created a dual boot system for that purpose and I do not want to be FORCED cold turkey to switch to a new OS till I am ready to do so.
I created a dual boot system quite some time ago and all was well until.RTM partition was completely up-to-date. I had recently updated to Windows 10 Build 10251 on the Insider partition.I turned the machine off on Sunday January 31, left town, and returned Saturday February 6. All was well with the dual boot when I turned the system off before leaving. When I turned the system on last night, it booted directly into the Insider Partition. There seems to be no option to boot into the RTM partition.
View 9 RepliesOkay, so the other week i received a new Clevo P650SE laptop. The laptop only had a 500GB 7200RPM HDD with Windows 10 to begin with, so yesterday i added my Samsung 840 EVO SSD. As i wanted this to now be the primary drive, i made another new installation of Windows onto here. After doing this, the system now displayed a boot selection at startup with the choice between the new Windows 10 installation on my SSD or the old one on the HDD.
As i no longer wanted to use the HDD for running Windows, i decided it would be best to delete Windows from this drive. So i booted onto an Ubuntu USB and wiped the entire drive of it's data in GParted, which included three different partitions. This seemed perfectly fine to me at the time, because i had a the new installation from the SSD showing up in the boot manager.
However, when i rebooted the machine and attempted to boot into the new installation on the SSD, it gives me this message:
"The boot configuration data from your PC is missing or contains errors.
File: /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/BC Error code: 0xc000000f"
I have tried everything to recover the system but nothing has worked. Startup repair from my Windows USB doesn't do anything, the system reset wouldn't operate because it stated that the partition was locked.
Nothing with the Command Prompt is working, I have done 'bootrec /fixmbr', 'bootrec /fixboot' and 'bootrec /rebuildbcd', but the last command returns the following error:
"The requested system drive cannot be found."
I also did 'bcdboot C:/Windows' but that also refused to work. I assumed the reason for this might be because the drive didn't have a letter, but when i attempted to add a letter is says:
"The specified drive letter is not free to be assigned."
Both drives in my laptop have now been completely wiped and converted to MBR, but even with the two drives empty the original message still appears when booting my Windows USB in UEFI.
I have only had this laptop a couple of weeks and it's already completely messed up. I can boot the Windows USB in Legacy and install Windows as normal, but of course i'm looking to have it back on UEFI as it was before.
I have been trying to create a USB that has Windows 7 to Windows 10 for convenience if I ever need to install any of them again. From what I have googled myself there is ways of doing it up from XP to Windows 8.1. How to go about this??
View 1 RepliesA few months ago, i made a dual boot of Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Now I was running out of memory on my Windows 10 partition, so I removed Windows 8.1. I was unable to add the free space to the Windows 10 partition because this free space was before the 10-partition.
So I decided to clone W10 to the free space using Easeus disk copy. (Successfull). Now i wanted to boot the clone, remove the old one and add the free space to the cloned W10. But i am unable to boot the clone. I can't chose the partition to boot from. What went wrong? there are 2 identical partitions with W10. How I can solve this without reinstalling everything?
I was messing around with partitions and created a test partition that was unfortunately the same size as my EFI partition. I went to delete my test partition, but deleted the EFI partition by mistake and now my computer won't start.
View 1 RepliesI have decided to get ready to remove my pesky 4.88GB Windows 8.1 Partition (partition 5) from my PC because now I have Windows 10 and no longer have the option to go back. I have used a Command in the Elevated Command Prompt to enable the F8 boot menu as a substitute to the manufacturers boot menu (Press Esc.) I know the boot menu by the manufacturer will be removed with the (partition 5) too. I have also found that the WinRE is on a different partition (partition 4), and so my question is... If I delete the manufacturers partition (p 5), will the F8 menu also be gone as well? It seems the F8 menu was put there by windows and not the manufacturer, but is it on partition 5 or is it on the same one as the WinRE partition (p 4)?
View 8 RepliesI just recently upgraded from an earlier build of Windows 10 to the latest build 11099. That went okay. But the problem was when I decided to extend the system partition (as it had only 3GB free left), after rebooting to extend the partition with MiniTool Partition Wizard (it required me to reboot so it could unlock the partition). That seemed like it went okay too, but after restarting, I would get a BSOD and no boot up at all. It seems like the partition extension has messed up the boot files. I say that because a folder named "$WINDOWS.~BT" has been created in the root directory of the system drive. (Now it's drive G: because I'm on another system in another partition temporarily).
And some other folder as well:
So my question is this. Since I have all these boot files here, could it possibly be that while the partition was being extended, the software I used might have messed up those files, and now my Windows doesn't boot up?
If so, or whatever the reason for that matter, is there anything I can do to take those boot files back to where they belong?
So I have a 128gb 840 evo ssd as my C drive and then a WD caviar Blue as a mass storage drive . So with windows 10 just coming out and it being free I thought I would duel boot it with windows 7(currently running) and went and cleared out a bunch of old games and programs and ended up the 47 gb free so I would have space to make a partition and have a little room after that. then once I tried to shrink the volume it says the maximum i can shrink it is 129mb. so I tried on my HDD and it worked just fine being able to shrink it 600GB(the remaining storage).

My computer froze during a Windows update, and I had to force a shut down, which really messed up my computer.
My computer was stuck in a boot loop, so I attempted to reinstall windows 10 onto it. At around 3% it crashed again, and since then has been really messed up.
If it tries to boot normally, it no longer gets stuck in a boot loop, but now just instantly crashes to blue screen, saying a required device can't be accessed (error 0xc000000f).
I tried to boot into the windows 10 install disk to try and run chkdsk or attempt other recovery tasks, but it crashes after a few seconds of being on the menu, saying to search for FAT FILE SYSTEM to try and fix the error.
I downloaded gparted onto a USB and ran it. It gave me this error: [URL]
Anyway, a while ago, I was playing with booting installations from a HDD, which worked, but now it seems I'm stuck with the partition I used to store the installation on.
So I have two questions:
1. To delete the H partition, I need to first set the C one to active, correct?
2. Is it even safe to delete the partition since it's a "system" partition?
The H partition is empty as far as general files go, but since it's bootale, it always shows up as a boot option, which is mildly annoying.

I have a new system running under Win 10 on which I want to use an SSD as the boot drive with all my s/w and a WD 6TB Black HDD for my data. However, when I format the 6TB drive it shows up as two unallocated segments, one of 2048.00 GB and the other with 3541.03 GB. The smaller one is available for a simple partition under Win 10 Disk Management, but actions for the larger one are all greyed out. When I make a simple partition in the smaller one the option to extend the partition is greyed out. What is the secret to using the full 6TB under Windows 10?
View 6 RepliesI updated my PC to windows 10 on the 29th , and for the 1st few days i had no issues what so ever. However now, whenever im say Playing a game and watching youtube or netflix my net will drop and can only be fixed by a restart. It "seems" ok if I am just doing 1 thing at once, say on this very forum for example, but if i opened a few windows now and started streaming something it would for sure drop. My internet is 100mb fiber optic, and all other devices connected to my hub are fine (PC is wired connection, this is the only thing having a issue, i have a wired xbox one which is fine, and wireless works perfect.)
I've tried ipconfig/flushdns - did nothing
I've tried swapping my settings to google ( 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) - did nothing.
I've even tried turning off firewall as i saw someone say that could cause this issue - did nothing.
I know i could just roll back to windows 7 and that would probably fix everything, but i really like windows 10 and would rather fix it if possible.
Window 10 involves multiples gesture but on my laptop dell isnpiron 15r 5520 the mutitrackpad is not working, but also the graphics a bit messy nt HD?

Got a Windows 10 upgrade notice and received an automatic download of Win10 but when it tries to install I get the message "Windows 10 couldn't be installed". "We couldn't update the system reserved partition". I would like to upgrade to Win10 on this pc.

Unallocated 46.58GB - this is my Over Provision Partition.
I guess I need need to increase my Data Partition to about 350MB. I want to use Minni Partition Wizard. Should I Reduce the Front End of my C partition? And use that space to grow the Data Partition?
I did a clean install on a new SSD that I had previously formatted and neglected to delete the partition ending up without a MSR partition. I've already installed lots of applications so starting over would not be something that I'd want to do. What are possible problems that I could be looking at going forward?
View 6 RepliesI have an SSD with WIN7 installed. It has no System Reserved Partition (SRP) and thus no boot files on that nonexistent partition.
I've read here that individuals with a SRP of only 100mb have had issues installing WIN 10 and that those issues were resolved by expanding the SRP from 100mb to 450mb.
Will WIN 10 install if I have no SRP? Will it merely alter the boot files on my C drive?
Because of a problem with 10 a tech told me to revert to 10270. I backed up everything important to my D: drive first. I did a complete formatting of C:. Then upon installing 10270 onto C: I first blew away the partitions on D:, realizing what I had done just after hitting the keys.
I have run Easeus's free Partition Recovery software but it finds absolutely nothing, even in deep scan.
Is there another reliable method with which to attack the problem of restoring the partition tables for D:?
I just upgraded my laptop from windows 8 to win 10. The free upgrade of course did not delete my files from window 8 so I went ahead and installed windows 10 on to my USB and booted from it for a clean install. While installing win 10 however I managed to do it on my C drive. I believe my previous OS was on D drive as when I go into my system properties now, C drive = 373 GB free from 393 GB which has the windows icon over it to show that OS is inside it and the 'D' drive has only 43 GB free from 393 GB capacity.
I would like to free up my D drive and delete all previous files and maybe also remove partition and only have one storage which is C drive. How to do it? Do I just go into my D drive and delete all the files inside it? such program files x86 etc? while running window 8 I managed to get a lot of spyware, adware etc on my system and hence why I preferred a clean install of windows 10.
Noticed this #2 partition, (128MB), on my lappy, is it serving any purpose? Best way to include it in the C: partition
