Installation :: How To Disable Forced Updating
Jan 29, 2015
I tried the TP when it initially came out, and while it was certainly an improvement over 8.x, it had some issues that made me go back to 8.
The most glaring one was the forced update function. Oftentimes, I'd postpone the updating because I was in the middle of something, and then Windows would simply power down on me later at an equally inconvenient time. I hope the idiots in Redmond don't include this in the final product.
I found a couple of registry tweaks online that were supposed to remove the forced updating, but neither of them worked.
As always, I like to run up-to-date systems, but I prefer to decide for myself when to run updates.

I have a 3G USB dongle with a data cap, and i don't want Windows to download anything when I'm using this- it's only for emails on the move.
Unfortunately, this connection cannot be set as "Metered: in Windows 8/8.1, only WiFi connections have the option to set as metered.
So my question, if i upgrade to Windows 10, will i be allowed to disable updates while on this connection? Will "net stop wuauserv" work?
Another question, can i opt out of forced driver updates? I prefer updating my drivers myself, and i often use older nvidia drivers (which often work better with some of my games).
Last question, what if an update breaks my computer? Will I be allowed to blacklist it? Simply rolling back is not enough, as WU will auto-install the bad update again..

so I put 10 in my family computer and now my computer is forced to use my live password as a mandatory password, and there is no way to remove it.
So I am asking, how do I remove the Mandatory password, because it is beyond grotesque something else dictates how I manage my property

For those people who CLEAN installed Win 10 using the Media Creation Tool, will it automatically update to Threshold-2 (version 1511 Build 10586.36) through Windows Update once installation had been completed? Or does that have to downloaded separately?
And what is the "KB" Number for version 1511 Threshold-2?

How to update a windows 7 to 10 on a Intel NUC with only 32gb of mSATA of SSD. The effective memory space of the SSD is about 28gb. I do have an USB external HDD which I use as a bootup disc/installer, but the limited SSD space in the NUC is a challenge.
What is the best way to proceed? How much space do I have to free up in the old Windows 7 so the installation will proceed properly??

Halfway through the installation, it reverted back to 8.1, and I got this message. [URL] .... The troubleshooting tips leads to [URL] ...., which is useless, and this has happened three times. What do I do?
I already tried disabling my antivirus and all startup programs but that didn't work. Windows 8.1 Enterprise, Lenovo Thinkpad...

A friend of mine is trying to upgrade his PC using ISO but he keeps getting an error that keeps restoring his PC back to Win8.1. His words "it finishes the install, gets to the copying files stage., then after a while it starts restoring my windows 8.1 back." He sent me a screenshot of the error but for reasons I don't know, Tapa Talk isn't allowing me to send the image. The error code on the screenshot is 0x8007000E-0x2000C with the message "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation."

how in Windows 10 do you completely disable the Windows key on the left, far to many times in game have I accidentally hit this damned key and want it gone. I had a .reg file to do this but it was for Win7 and doesn't seem to work in Win 10.

EDGE I don't care for and I want Firefox as my browser how can I disable Edge so it is not my default browser? I don't want to remove it just keep it from using CPU time or working? I have read many comments that say if you don't actually keep it from running in the background it will use CPU power.

My current machine is running Windows 10 Pro. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro, using a windows 8.1 pro key if that matters.
My situation is that I ordered a new computer, and would like to deactivate my current one and use my current key on the new computer.

At night I use my laptop, then put it to sleep -- either choosing Sleep option in power off menu, or closing laptop lid. Did this for +2 years in 8.1 without issues.
Now with 10 installed, I notice in the morning when I get up, that the lights on my laptop are all on, and it is warm to the touch. I've verified that when I put the computer down at night, it DOES go to sleep. But by morning, it is back on and out of sleep mode.

I just installed the BioniX Wallpaper Animator to make my desktop background a gif. It made the gif all wierd and made my computer lag so I uninstalled the software and tried to change the background but it won't let me change the background. Whenever I open settings and go to change the background it is all glitchy and kind of slow and it never changes it, I tried changing the background in control center but the same thing happened. I'm not sure what is happening but I have a feeling the software took over the background settings. I am extremely frustrated and don't know what to do. I have temporarily set the ease of access settings to remove the desktop which is the only thing that works right now but it just changes it to black.

Microsoft just forced me to change my Win10 password, I could not get around it, i couldn't change it back "you cannot use a password previously used" . I was pretty livid and I don't want to forever have to come up with new passwords I've never used before. Can i stop this, or freeze my current password? Is there any way not bend over for MS and say of course sir, however you like sir. I just want to keep my password the same.

I upgraded to 10 again without doing anything I usually do before hand. I went to disable the option to not let windows update install drivers and theres no option. I went to advanced system settings, hardware, then device installation settings and theres only 2 options, yes (recommended) and no (your device might not work as expected)

My win10 installation got stuck at 91% so I had to restart and disable my antivirus and other services, but when I start MediaCreationToolx64 it starts to download the 3gb again from the beginning. Is there an installer somewhere in the downloaded files that can let me skip this or do I have to download it again?

Recently updated to Windows 10, and I watch a lot of tv through my laptop by HDMI to my HDTV. Before with Windows 7, I NEVER had an issue like this.
After somewhere around 15-20 minutes of the HDMI being plugged in and watching via my TV, the computer locks itself. It goes to a black screen and "disconnects" from the HDMI input. BUT the programs keep running, but I can't see or hear them since it doesn't go back to laptop input. To bring it back I have to click the mousepad and it brings me right to asking for my password. How do I stop the laptop from ever locking while I'm watching or streaming through HDMI? It doesn't do it when it's playing straight off the laptop...

Windows 10 was forcing me to enter a password every time the computer booted up. I ran netplwiz, unchecked the box that said password was required, entered my password twice, then I shut down the computer (not just a restart, a complete shutdown). When I turned it back on it didn't ask for a password. But then after it was idle for awhile, when I woke it up it wanted a password again. How do I get rid of that?

No luck in installing Win 10 Home to their HP Stream 8? When I forced an upgrade I got Error 80240020 when installing. Using iso was a no go also. Maybe because it has a compressed OS? I have enough free space on drive c.

I recently installed some software on my computer (I can't remember what it was - I installed many things as it's a new PC) and now whenever I use Microsoft Edge every search I do is redirected to Yahoo!. In Edge's settings the default search engine is google and there is no trace of Yahoo! that I can find. What can I do?

This is not exactly win 10 specific question, i had same problem in win 7, but now that i'm on win 10, that problem is still there. Here's what's going on:
I have high-end gaming PC with GTX 980 and 4k monitor and 1080p monitor as secondary.
4k Monitor is connected via DisplayPort and other monitor is using HDMI
Both of those monitors have built-in speakers (actually i don't think 1080p monitor has speakers)
But here's the problem, windows 10 keeps automatically installing HDMI audio drivers and 50% of the time when i boot my system, all my software defaults to the stupid HDMI sound.
This is extremely annoying and i'm about to pull my hair out over this. All my media players default to monitor audio, even tho windows does not select it as "default device".
Also even tho other monitor doesn't have speakers, system still thinks that the monitor has speakers and sets it as audio device.
Also when i record gameplays using shadowplay or other recorder, lot of times there's no audio on videos, because screen recorders also default to that dumb hdmi audio. I can't be bothered to check audio every time i do something.
I really need a way to tell windows 10 to STOP doing that. Here's what i've done so far:
1. under playback devices, i have DISABLED both of the monitors as playback devices.
2. I have tried uninstalling + disabling drivers for both monitors in "device manager"
3. i used local group policy to force windows not to install drivers (gpedit.msc > administrative templates > system > device installation), then i grabbed the group ID from device manager and entered it there to prevent windows from installing drivers for any audio groups.
After step 3, drivers were not installed, but windows still shows both monitors in "playback devices", only difference is that in device manager it says that this device does not have drivers installed, but they're still showing up in "playback devices", therefore all my software is STILL able to use them as playback and some of my software, like winamp, still defaults to them.
Forgot to mention, that if I disable both of them in playback devices, windows automatically re-enables them at some point. probably at boot, but i can't be bothered to check every few seconds, i just want windows to STOP trying to tell me what's best, i like my Asus STRIX 7.1 headset + 7.1 Hi-Fi home theater speaker system, i don't need some tiny jurassic stereo speakers lol.
I want to punch whoever made this feature. I mean .. what kind of an caveman would buy high-end gaming PC with GTX 980 + 4k monitor and NOT have a proper sound card + headset? Did those low-brainers in microsoft seriously think that anyone using high-end gaming PC, would like to use HDMI as primary audio? that's just ridiculous!
I think my only option is to force windows to think that i'm not using HDMI so it won't even detect my monitors as audio devices, is that possible.

I think we can now all agree: Microsoft ’s hardline policy on Windows 10’s forced updates is silly. Very silly. Since launching nine days ago Windows Update has sent out an unstable graphics driver which switched off monitors, a buggy security patch which corrupted Windows Explorer and there are now a number of reports that a third update is causing Window 10 machines to crash over and over again…
The patch in question is KB3081424 (ironically enough a roll-up of bug fixes) and during its update process affected users find it fails and triggers the message: “We couldn’t complete the updates, undoing the changes.” Undoing them results in a mandatory system reboot, but as soon as the user logs back on Windows 10’s update process kicks in and tries to install KB3081424 again.
I’m sure you’re way ahead of me here, but since Windows 10 updates cannot be stopped KB3081424 tries to install over and over again which leaves systems caught in endless reboot loops.

My friend gave me a wireless USB dongle to use with my Xbox 360 controller for my PC tower. For whatever reason, Windows wasn't recognizing the dongle so I forcibly-assigned the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller driver present in Windows 10 to the dongle. Now, I can connect my Xbox 360 controller, but I have lost all sound output. I have tried updated drivers, reinstalling, and disabling specific drivers to no avail. At one point, uninstalling this Creative sound driver(which worked earlier) made my sound work for an hour, but now my sound doesn't work again. I don't want to reinstall Windows and lose all the applications a friend downloaded for me.

This has been happening for the last week. I need to know which update it rode in on so I can remove it. It is very irritating just like the Windows 8 to 8.1 forced update notification.
I have my system set to only notify me about updates, at which time I use the Update Hider diagcab to hide unwanted updates. But this is a new twist, now I am still forced to do updates from this obnoxious notification.
How would I shut this off, I disabled the Forced Windows 8 to 8.1 update notification through Group Policy Editor, would I remove this one the same way?
When it pops up, and it will pop up in the middle of my work, I can't DO anything except to click on it. This is mostly why I stick to Windows 7 because of cack like this.
