Installation :: Lost Desktop Icons And Files After Upgrade From 8.1?
Nov 16, 2015
I just upgraded to W10 from W8.1 and have lost my desktop short cuts and files. How do I recover them. During the upgrade process it said all files were transferred properly. I have looked at windows.old, but don't know what to look for or how to recover them from that file.
I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 over 4 days ago. After windows 10 was up, all the folders/files in my desktop were moved somewhere. I did a file search and moved them back to the desktop. I was on a general user admin account. Shortly after, I logged into my outlook account on windows 10. Could still see all the files/folders on my desktop.
But when I rebooted my pc for 1st time after upgrading to windows 10, all the desktop files/folders disappeared. File search could only find the icon links in ..../Recent folder. No physical files/folders exist for those icon links. Online MS techs had tried to look into my pc remotely but they could not find anything. One online tech suggested Office 365 could recover them since the files may be saved in Office app, but I used Office to search for the files with no success.
All other personal files/folders not saved on desktop are still OK. All was lost for the files/folders on desktop?
I just moved to another country and forgot my extra hard drive, so I didn't back up my files before upgrading to Windows 10. The installation went fine. After the install was done, I tested out a number of programs with no problems. Satisfied, I migrated my old desktop files over (for some reason Window's decided to not migrate them on its own). Upon restarting my computer for updates, I noticed my desktop had reverted back to what Windows 10 had originally set it up has, with little more than recycle bin and a few really random programs shortcutted. Curious as to where it migrated my old desktop files, I began to search ... nothing in my old user settings desktop file ... the recently found links all display the message 'file may have been deleted or moved' ... windows search turns up nothing for any file I had on the desktop. I am closing in beyond afraid that I've lost all of the files on my desktop in some glitch or migration error.
I've upgraded from win 8.1 to 10. after upgrade all my files were in local disk user and in the folders but were not in library folders e.g pics were in local disk user pictures but not in file explorer pictures. so i moved every thing to the folders and after restarting my laptop everything was gone... what can i do to recover my data.
I've made sure my games aren't muted, reinstalled realtek drivers, changed output sources, ...restarted the computer..., verified game cache, so on so on.
I thought it was just for steam games, but it happens in Origin, Uplay, and Minecraft as well. Twice now loading the defaults in UEFI bios has temporarily fixed it., but it doesn't work every time.
Haven't changed anything, have the latest updates for everything, and i don't have a virus.
I was able to attach files using the combination of gmail and Windows 8. However, since I upgraded to Windows 10, I have been unable to attach the same files in gmail. The Attach files GUI opens, I select the file to attach, click OPEN, and the system goes back to the GUI without linking to the selected attachment. Double-clicking doesn't work, either. No attachment.
OK I did my windows 10 upgrade now on three machines. two of the machines were single user windows 8.1 prior to upgrade, but one was a Windows 7 Pro machine. I ran the upgrade, but lost my kids user id log on. I had a user id for them set up as a user with no admin rights and no password. I am not opposed to it having a password, now that the kids are teenagers, but I can't figure out how to recreate the user ID so that it is attached to all there saved files. Lots of schoolwork was saved on there ID. I can access it with my admin user account, but want to restore there id.
I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and lost LAN, so could not connect to internet. Troubleshooter advised a possible driver problem with the network card, however the Realtek GBT family card showed up as working in device manager. Researching Internet came up with no solution. I rolled back to 8.1, found updated drivers for the network card, installed them, and upgraded again. Still the same problem. A friend upgrading from 7 had the same problem and with the same network card, and wireless. I realised we both had PrivateFirewall installed, and as soon as I uninistalled it, Internet was working again.
I just upgraded my Win 7 X 64 laptop to Win 10 and have the same desktop as on 7. I find I am unable to reposition any of the icons on the desktop like I could on 7. Otherwise the are normal. as they work just like always. I can click them or delete them but not move them. How to reposition the desktop icons on Win 10 Pro?
losing all their bookmarks and their password database when they restarted Firefox after the update from Windows 7 (or any other version) -> Windows 10??
Yes, did create system image but did not preserve C:users (-> U:) *. Even the old folder no longer had my bookmarks, and moving the old passwd and master key file did not allow Moz to figure it out.**
* I don't want users on my SSD drive -- I add/delete stuff WAYYY too often, so it sits on a spinny drive and is connected via a junction point.
** electronic god(desse)s for even a 7-month-old backup, so I didn't lose that much in terms of moz config.
I'm trying to create some custom buttons for my PC using Rainmeter, and part of what I need is high resolution/quality icons from the programs I use. I notice that for quite a few programs, since I've set my icons to large, come up very nicely on my desktop, but I can't seem to find them of the same quality on the Internet. So, how can I take whatever file it is that creates this icon, and convert it into a high resolution jpeg or png file so I can edit it?
This is in regards to files disappearing and my desktop changing. I downloaded and installed Windows 10 last night but did not do any modifications until this morning. When I started my computer today, I couldn't find my files. I found them in my user profile. So I moved them to the desktop in a new folder. Also, the desktop was not my previous desktop in regards to shortcuts. Which was fine because I added them back.
I then changed the desktop theme to the flower theme. I then went to restart and selected Update and Restart. When the computer rebooted, my desktop them was gone, and now my old shortcuts from 8.1 were on there. AND the file folder I created with all my files is gone.
I have looked in the windows old folder, the new one, did a file search, what happened? I do not have more than one desktop in the virtual desktops.
Should I recover back to 8.1 to get my files or how do I find them? They can't be deleted but somehow hidden on that other desktop.
Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. The Installation went ok but when it got to the desktop my screen kept blipping or stalling out, my icons at the bottom of my screen and on the desktop kept disappearing and reappearing, my ICloud is giving me some weird message about how I don't have the privileges to access the folder...oh, and I cant click on an of my folders either...Anywhere between 5 min to 25 min is how long it takes for my computer to finally Stabilize itself and then everything works fine....It seems like it is taking longer to Stabilize...My computer is fairly new...I bought it in June of 2014...It is an HP Envy 23 All in One.
Clean install build 10130. I can't find anywhere to choose the icons I want on the desktop. Used to be able to do this from Personalization but not any more. Can't find anywhere in Control Panel either.
I've seen lots of people posting about this all over the internet but as of yet not found a clear fix to my problem. I registered for the upgrade a while ago and the 'check' said that my system was fine. It's a HP TouchSmart 520 and is 2 to 3 years old.Today I got the message saying that I could do the upgrade and all seemed to go well, no errors throughout the installation. However, as soon as one of the users logs on the desktop just flashes and you can't access anything other than ctrl-alt-del and the task manager.
I've tried booting into safe mode and trying a windows update (boots in safe mode with no flashing) but it finds nothing, and I've looked on the HP website to see if there is a W10 driver. It gives you a file to download which should check for drivers but that doesn't run in safe mode so a non-starter. And if I use the HP website it basically says that you need to use the windows update; which just sits there doing nothing.
If I go into device manager and try to do an update it says that the graphics driver is up to date. I am a bit hacked off that the HP website suggests that it's a product that's not been tested with W10, but the Microsoft check said all ok.
Having upgraded to Windows 10 I am now unable to use my computer at all as when attempts to upload the desktop it continually fails to do so, the main desktop image is loaded but as it attempts to then add the icons it goes blank for a moment and then attempts the same procedure again. This occurs about every 2 to 3 seconds. On some occasions it displays the icons momentarily but often not at all. The mouse can be moved around the screen but I am unable to do anything further with it as the blue 'wait' circle is continually displayed. The odd thing howvever is that I left themChine running overnight in the hope that it would stabilise but when I returned to it Norton was requesting an upgrade whilst the problem persisted. This box was totally functional and i was able to proceed with it, which enabled the PC to then receive updates and reboot, with the same problem however. I am now forced to switch the machine off via the power button as I cannot shut down normally.
The first time, it hung at 26% total, 89% copying files. Then it bricked my system completely so I made a clean install of Windows 8.1. There was nothing else installed than Windows & Updates.
Tried to update it with a stick made by the Media Creation Tool --> Stuck at 23%, 77% copying files.
I tried everything: Disabled Network Adapter, pulled all Cables (only mouse left) out, I also detached my second HDD.
I am trying to install Win10 on my SSD (Samsung 830 Pro, 130GB). I am running a Z77 Chipset.
I'd love to install completely new with the Image but that doesn't work because of the activation later on..
I'm stuck with a fresh Windows 8.1 install now, that's not really what I wanted. I'd love to update to 10 since I had it as a Insider too.
Iinstalled windows 10. After installation, my files were ok. Immediately, i moved them to the desktop and documents. Then, i restart the pc. Then i see that all my files (on desktop and documents) are gone. My programms and other files are ok but the ones that i moved to desktop and documents were deleted. How can I restore them?
Just a curiosity of mine - Is there a difference between a clean install and performing an upgrade while keeping only the files? In other words, is this sort of upgrade the same as a clean install, only with the files restored to 'documents', desktop, etc.? Or, does the new windows folder contain remnants of the previous install.
All was well till 2 days ago, when I no longer had icons or Cortana. Tried to recover these using "powershell" Was only able to recover some icons, but not all. Can access some of my apps indirectly, but have lost many. Do not even have access to the app store anymore.
After tonight's updates, this morning I've seen that Store and Edge's icons are white square. When last night I turned off the PC I noticed there was an update and this morning a page of Edge, What's new (get started), opened and the icon on the taskbar was a white square. Then searching for an app in the store I saw that the icon was the same: a white square. (see the screenshots).I did a "sfc / verifyonly"
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10240] (c) 2015 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:WINDOWSsystem32>sfc /verifyonly Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. What can I do now to restore that icons?
Just upgraded to Windows 10 and I don't seem to be able to find the Tiles/Icons to open up my emails I use both Outlook and Yahoo and they were both easily accessible through the Tiles before I upgraded. What can I do to restore them?
Running Windows 10 on a Dell Venue 8 pro Tablet. Several months ago, and just yesterday I lost my desktop. Turned on the Tablet went to the desktop picture after signing in and ... nothing. No live panels, no desktop icons, the action center would not appear. Just the desktop picture. If I tapped on the picture, the icons would appear for a split second. Anything pinned to the bar along the bottom would work. I was able to get to system restore and restore to a couple of days ago. That worked. What happened. Don't really know how to fix other than system restore.
