It seems when updating online between builds, settings are lost, registry tweaks etc.

Shortcut Properties - Settings And Preserving

Sep 23, 2015

I am working with a fresh W10 install. I am used to W7.

One old (x86) application I run requires that I configure the Start in setting for the shortcut that launches it. The shortcut that was placed on the desktop did not let me change that. The shortcut in the New list does not let me change that. The shortcut in the All Programs list does not let me change that. Right-click does not offer Properties.

I created a new shortcut on the desktop. That lets me open Properties, so I was able to make the required change to Start In. That shortcut launches correctly. However when I right-click in that shortcut and Pin to Start, launching from the Start menu does NOT launch correctly (which is to say, the program is not started using the Start In value). Apparently the property I changed is lost when the shortcut is move to the Start menu.

How can I control the Properties of this in the All Programs, Start menu, and other places where right-click does not give the the Properties option? How can I keep a change to Properties from being lost when an item is pinned to Start? Is any of this even possible?

Installation :: Fresh Install Using Latest Build - File Explorer Settings?

Dec 10, 2015

I just had to re-install W10 using the latest build offered by the Microsoft Setup Tool because W10 on one machine became corrupted somewhere along the multiple update path! No problems, except it seems that a few of the default settings are a little different than they were in previous downloads. Most are for the better. But...I can't seem to figure out how to turn off the display of all the disk drives in the Navigation Pane of File Explorer. I have five other systems that have migrated successfully along the update path and they don't look like the screen shot attached. What or where is the setting to turn off the display of the disk drives when the "This PC" is collapsed.

Updates :: Cannot Find Newest Build After Rolling Back To Previous Build

Jan 29, 2016

So, recently (after the November build release) I woke the next morning to find that my computer underwent a rather major update. After which, it seemed, my home network was thrown out of wack. I immediately rolled/reverted/recovered to previous build. But now everything is out of wack. Most of the time I have to restart my computer just so it'll communicate with my printer to start printing.

And restarting the computer is twice as long if it restarts at all. Most of the time It gets stuck in the "restart" progress animates (the rotating circles) and I have to press the restart button on the computer tower, with great regret and dread. Transferring files from one windows 10 device to another is a 50/50 hit or miss. I'm not literate when it comes to networking and was super happy how everything was.

But now, not only is my wifi home network out of wack, but my computer itself is wonky. I figure I might as well reinstall the newest build in hopes that it'll at least fix a fe of the problems. But anytime I check for updates, the newest build no longer shows up.

Updates :: Is It Possible To Skip A Build?

Dec 10, 2015

When I first got Windows 10, I experienced frequent crashes and hangs, and I frequently had to restart, because something wasn't working right. About a month ago, the system finally became reasonably stable. Yesterday, I upgraded to build 10586, and so far at least I haven't had any crashes or hangs, but every time I turn the computer on, I have to restart to get everything to work right. Is it possible to just ignore those build upgrade notices, so I can enjoy a stable OS for a while?

Updates :: How To Get Latest Build After Reverting To Earlier One

Jan 25, 2016

Somewhat unusual situation here. A machine running the latest build (11102) got badly infected by malware. It was such a major attack that I was about to reload the earlier day's image from my Windows Home Server. But it seemed even easier to revert to the previous build, not yet removed from the Windows.old folder. This I did, and everything soon was running fine as expected.

The issue is that the Updates check is not offering Build 11102 again. This isn't a showstopper; I'm sure there will be another newer build soon. But it would be nice to be back up on this latest build, just as all my other Win10 machines are running.

Updates :: Insider Build 11102 Won't Update To 14257

Feb 10, 2016

I have been successfully updating as a Insider Win 10 since Oct 2014 with no problems. I recently did a clean install of build 11102 and it seems ok. A few slow downs and hangs but generally ok. Recently I received notification from MS that build 14257 was available for download. I downloaded the file as always and it went through the usual prep and getting ready etc. When it rebooted to start the install I get a screen asking me to "Choose your Keyboard L/O" I choose United States and then it reverts back to "Choose an Option" I choose "continue & Exit to Win 10" and it boots back into my build 11102. I've tried this three or four times with the same result. I have downloaded and run the MS Fit-It for upgrades to no avail. I have tried using a Local account, still does the same thing. I created an ISO TechNet and it does the same thing when trying to do a clean install. I have run DISM and SFC /scannow

Updates :: Windows Insider Build 10586 Deactivated After Hardware Upgrade

Nov 21, 2015

My motherboard died, and I had to get a new one. I bought the same model. The rest of hardware on my PC remained the same. After that upgrade my Windows 10 isn't activated any more.

I don't have Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10 licence, but I am early Windows 10 Insider, and I recieved free Insider builds. They had expiration date, so I had to keep ugrading to new builds, and stay in the Insider program to retain my free "licence". I was doing so, and I provided feedback to Microsoft about every build.

I was hoping that "minor" hardware change wouldn't affect my Windows 10 activation, because all Insiders should have free "licence" that is tied to my Microsoft e-mail account?

Now my Windows 10 Insider 10586 build isn't activated. How can I activate it? Shouldn't all Insider versions be free? Should I sign for Windows Insider program all over again?

I do not want Windows 10 to update and restart my PC automatically - I want to decide when that is done.

In the Settings it is fixed at 'Automatic' update.

I have followed two suggestions to alter the setting that searches turned up, but neither have worked so far.

NOTE:
Here are the 2 Methods I tried.

Updates :: Can't Open Settings (Windows Update)

Jul 30, 2015

Everything went well on the Win10 installation, but the only problem is that when I go to access the settings tab in the start menu, it just flashes briefly like it tries to open the settings window, and then disappears, so I can't access anything in the settings. No update checking, just nothing. Everything else seems to work... I can also access the system info window and it shows Windows 10 to be activated.

Edit: I can get to the control panel, and I can see Windows Update, but I get this error message when I try to click on it:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

Installation :: Can Only Roll Back To Last Build

Aug 4, 2015

I'm trying to roll back to the OEM Win 7 on this machine. On the setting page "Updates & security" the options under "recovery" did NOT include rolling back to Win 7. The only choice was to roll back to the previous build. I thought perhaps I would have to work my way back to 7 build, by build. I started out with 10041, then 10130, then 10240. I clicked the "Back to previous build, hoping. Well, it went back to 10130 no problem. However, that is it. Going the Setting, Updates& Security route within this roll back of 10130 there is no way to keep going back to finally get back to Win 7.

Installation :: Unable To Update To New Build

Jun 17, 2015

I've got a Nokia Lumia 530 and it was running happily on Win10. With the new build out you had to firstly roll back to 8.1 Update 1, then install Windows Insider and update.Unfortunately I don't seem to have enough drive space to do the update. It needs 1.35 gig and although Storage Sense says 1.39 gig available, it won't progress due to insufficient space. Must be some temp files or something.I've moved every app I can over to the SD card but to no avail.

Updates :: Settings Configured To Automatically Download And Install

Sep 28, 2015

I have my settings configured to automatically download and install Windows updates, yet every single day I have to manually check for updates and there are always updates found, which then proceed to be installed. Why is this? By very definition, shouldn't "automatic updates" mean that nothing should be found when manually checking for them? Yet this is a daily occurrence.
