Installing Windows On Nearly Full SSD?

Jul 17, 2015

So I only have 150-200mb free on my SSD, but I wanted to install Windows 10 after its release.

Is it possible to install it on my SSD or do I need to do something first?

Installation :: How To Do Full Reinstall Of Windows On Laptop

Jan 30, 2016

I have a Toshiba Satellite E45DW-C4210 (came preinstalled with Windows 10 so no disc obviously) & it came with some bloatware from Toshiba.

How can I do a "fresh" wipe or whatever you want to call it so only Windows 10 is on the laptop, I don't want any Toshiba software/bloatware on the laptop. Basically just barebones, as if I built my this laptop myself and put a copy of Windows 10 on it. That is what I'm looking to do. I just feel starting over again with nothing but Windows will improve the laptop.

I know you can do a system reset where it wipes all your data & re-installs Windows 10 but then the Toshiba's software is just installed all over again. I don't know if this is possible but if it is how can I achieve this?

Windows Defender / Full Scan / Sleep Mode

Jan 10, 2016

First thing I should mention is I haven't had a virus in at least ten years. Those of you that run Windows Defender know that it runs a daily quick scan so maybe no real need to run a full scan. That said, I set WD to run a full scan and went to bed last night. Woke up this morning and saw it had barely moved. First thing I thought of is the 'power options' settings. So I did the usual: Control Panel/power options – power saver – change power settings/put computer to sleep-never / change advanced power settings/change settings that are currently unavailable-Hard disk-Turn off hard disk after – Never – Apply – O.K.

Started another scan, within ten minutes I saw that the power button light is in 'sleep' mode. Let it run for two hours anyway. Scan basically did not run.

Windows 10, Dell computer, all updates. I have run full scans in the past, been several months, and it took a little less than two hours. Do I suspect I have a virus – no. Still that shouldn't prevent me from running a full scan. I have "no" other issues.

Installing New SSD With Clean Windows Install

Nov 9, 2015

When I got my computer in 2012, I used Windows' own mover to move all files and settings over. I didn't know that that was a bad idea, and so ended up with a corrupted profile and some bad settings.

I am finally ready to do something about it.

Here's my setup:

* Windows 10 (which I am loving, by the way)
* Two drives, C and D. C is my boot drive.

I want to format a new SSD drive with a clean Windows 10 install and then replace my existing C drive with that new drive. I know this means I will have to reinstall everything that is on my existing C drive, but I'm fine with that.

Here are my questions:

1. How can I format my new SSD drive with Windows 10 and get it set up as my new C drive? I have a USB connector for the new SSD drive so I can access it from a USB port first; can I use that connection to install Windows on the drive? The new SSD came with software to clone my existing C drive, but of course that is not what I want; I want a clean install to get away from the corrupted install. Can Windows recognize and format a drive connected through a USB port?

2. When I put my new drive C into my computer, how do I tell my computer that I want that to be my boot drive?

3. Once I get the new SSD installed as my new drive C, how do I format my old drive C as a drive E with Windows 10? Again, I am fine with wiping out everything on that drive once I have a new C.

4. I have a lot of programs installed on my D drive and want to keep them there. Will I need to reinstall them? (Again, if so, I'm fine with that.) Or would symlinks work?

Need To Clear Drive Before Installing Windows Again?

Nov 26, 2015

The title pretty much sums it. I'm having some issues with my PC, (not bad, resolved easily from just a clean install) and i'm going to use the windows media creation tool to do a fresh install of windows on my drive. Now my PC came with windows 8.1 pre-installed, but since i HAVE upgraded to windows 10 already, it won't download windows 8.1 right? Also, since i already have windows and everything working on this drive, will i need to do a factory restore before using the media creation tool, or does it clear everything on the drive anyway when i use the creation tool?

Installing On New SSD Without Wiping HDD That Windows 7 Is Currently Installed On?

Sep 3, 2015

I currently have windows 7 on my 1TB hard drive and have recently bought a new 256gb Crucial SSD (but not installed it in my desktop yet).

I bought the SSD to be able to install games onto it so they load quicker but also if possible to have my OS booting from it so my computer loads quicker from switching on.

Someone put me onto the idea of using a program called Steam Mover to be able to move games from my HDD to the SSD without having to uninstall them and then re-download them direct to the SSD. I understand this can also be used for other programs like photoshop etc too.

I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but don't want to have to do a clean install and lose all the programs that i currently have installed such as Photoshop, Office, iTunes etc. Is it possible to somehow upgrade my OS on my HDD but then actually boot from the SSD perhaps by using the Steam Mover program?

If not, do I just have to bite the bullet and accept that I will either lose or have to reinstall a number of programs to my HDD? I do have a second 1TB HDD which is empty at the moment in case its needed for cloning files?

Updates :: How To Stop Windows Update Installing Driver

Mar 5, 2016

Windows 10 keeps installing the ASUS Smart Gesture touchpad driver on my laptop. The driver is garbage and it runs three memory resident processes, which seems rather excessive for a touchpad driver. The default Windows touchpad driver works perfectly well, so I want to use that instead of the ASUS driver. However, if I uninstall the ASUS driver Windows Update quickly reinstalls it.

I disabled automatic driver installation when I installed Windows 10, as you can see here:

Despite that Windows update keeps installing the ASUS Smart Gesture driver.

how I can make it stop?

Performance :: CPU Fan Running At Full Speed?

Aug 6, 2015

I recently installed Windows 10 on a desktop computer and everything went as smoothly as it could have, with no problems at all. So, motivated by how well everything went with that computer, I decided to upgrade Windows on a laptop as well. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L855, with an Intel Core i3-2370M processor.

The upgrade process on the laptop also completed successfully. Now both computers have Windows 10 and so far it has been running... fine.

The only unusual thing I've noticed with the laptop is that the CPU fan wants to run at full speed all the time, even though the computer is never used for any "processor-intensive" tasks. The normal activity on it is browsing the web, watching videos, playing music, writing text files and really nothing more than that.

I immediately found this odd and I have come to the conclusion that something in Windows 10 is responsible because:

a) This never happened in Windows 7, which was the previous operating system the computer had, and

b) This doesn't happen when I start the computer and go into a different operating system, namely Ubuntu.

Why Cannot Set Permissions To Full Control Of My Files

Feb 12, 2016

Like many other new Win10 users, I've experienced Microsoft's built-in gotcha: all the files I transferred from my old PC are now Read-Only. OK, I know that I can uncheck this attribute in each file's properties. I've read that in recalcitrant cases I should go to the Security tab of Properties and edit them to allow Full Control. That works in some cases... but I'm finding cases where the Edit is greyed out, and I am unable to make changes. Most often, the only User in the box is Home Users. There is no other line for Administrator or anything else. How can I get past this roadblock?

Use Full Screen Start When In Desktop?

May 25, 2015

I note in the screenshots that there is an option in W10 marked 'Use full screen start when in the desktop'. This seems puzzling to me, as I will want to use the full screen start when on the start screen (of course) but obviously I won't want a full screen start when running the Desktop app. Is it possible to use the start menu when running the Desktop app and still have the full start screen presented when I close it/switch away from it? Much like Win8 (only with the new and improved start menu of course) where I right click on the Windows logo icon to get the start menu and left click it to return to the start screen?

Full Screen Game Resolution?

Aug 10, 2015

I was working on my MIL's laptop over the weekend, and she was having problems with games on Windows 10. She's running a Yoga 2 Pro, and launching full screen games requires a resolution change. The game would launch, and be running normally, but attempting to give it focus would always drop you back into the desktop.

After doing some research, it's a remaining bug from the beta. Resolution changes causes the start menu to steal focus, which causes you to drop down into the desktop. Alt tabbing into the game repeats the cycle. The games (in this case) were not crashing, just unable to display.
