Yesterday my friend installed windows 10, but encounters an issue when logging in. He types in his password, but it says its invalid, he then clicks next, but then the screen goes black then reboots.
He has an HP Pavilion desktop.
Is there any way to revert back to windows 7, which he was previously on?
So a few days ago I installed Windows Vista after Windows 7 wouldn't work and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Vista worked fine, but after a day I somehow managed to shut off the pc while it was updating. I thought it wouldn't be that bad, but it was. When I booted Vista, it would show the normal loading screen and after that the screen would go black for 1 minute. Then the pc reboots itself.
I thought I could fix this by putting Windows 10 on a cd and installing it, but it didn't. At first I got an error from my monitor saying that Windows' resolution was too high for my monitor (my monitor's max is 1024x1080) so I went into safe mode and changed it.
I thought it would finally work, but again it didn't. It showed the same error from Vista; normal Windows 10 loading screen, goes black, reboots.
My basic specs:
CPU - 5960X
MOBO: ASUS Rampage V Extreme
GPU: GTX 980
I turn my computer on, see the BIOS just fine, it shows the Windows 10 logo, then a black screen. If I move my mouse around, I see the cursor. After nearly 30 seconds (i'm guessing), my computer reboots itself, and the cycle repeats.
My motherboard is kind of funky. By pressing F8, it actually goes into a BIOS menu that allows me to select which device I want to boot from, instead of going to Safe Mode. This is what I'd like to do, actually, so I can choose my last known good configuration.
Is there any other way to get to this screen to choose my last known good configuration, can I use a USB flash drive and boot to it to get to a repair screen or what course of action should I take?
I'm experiencing a strange problem on my secondary desktop (the crappy Alienware). Randomly, the machine restarts within a mere 5 minutes of it running.
It also restarts just sitting on the login screen, so it doesn't only happen when someone is logged in. It, of course, doesn't do this in Safe Mode.
I did a bit of research and this seems to have been an issue for a while, or has been in the past. Was upgrading to windows 10, I first had to restart my pc cause it was initially stuck on that preparing to install problem with the green bar being stuck around 25%.
It then got through that and began the installation process with the big circle and rebooting process. However around 91% when I last looked at it it was just black screen, this stayed this way for about 3-4 hours. I then decided to reboot the pc and it has now booted to the login screen. Is this a known bug or could there be a possible issue?
The problem seems a bit different as some people I saw have had to fall back on PC restore points etc. So not sure if it installed or what could be the problem.
Also side note, I upgraded my pc when windows 10 first publically released, but rolled back because I had about 5min shutdown times.
When the win 10 login screen comes up, clicking on the password box does nothing and the password cannot be entered. What do I do?

View 1 RepliesAfter upgrading two old household laptops to Windows 10 through the step up dealio, I decided it was okay and stable to update my one month old gaming machine as well,
( YES I forgot to back it up, stupid, yes. Only truly worried about my save game files as the critical information on my SSD, nothing dreadfully important besides lots of hours of wasted Witcher 3 time)
The update installed seemingly fine, although overnight and I woke up to the password login, whence from there I entered my password and the screen freezes and the PC restarts almost immediately and brings me right back to the endless cycle of Login/password entrance screen.
1.Can I make a bootable USB from my other laptops with Win10 currently Installed and use it to reinstall on my gaming rig, or at least download it online and do it that way?
2. Would reinstalling my Win7 delete any folders and files (save games and steam games not on backup 2TB HDD) that are on my SDD, basically downgrading windows back from the Win10 login to the Win7 stable version?
3. Could it be my GTX 970 crashing new Win10 because I didnt install the new Nvidia driver pre-Win10 install? Maybe try removing the card and booting with onboard i5 4690k GPU? (will try soon)
Why does this happen to my brand spanking new mid range rig and not the jalopy old laptops I have...

So.. I screwed up.. I used a small program called something like Windows 10 Login Background Changer (something along those lines) and when I restarted my computer, it never reached the login screen. I can move the mouse and open Magnifier (was pushing random controls), but I don't know how to get past here.
View 7 RepliesWindows 10 loads and all good, after typing in password all good, programs load, then after 10 seconds black screen with mouse cursor active, if I run a command prompt and type in explorer.exe the desktop comes back for 10 seconds then back to black screen, I run a nviadia 460 GTX, I'm assuming theres some driver issue, have installed latest driver but same result.
View 2 RepliesI got updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 yesterday, everything was as it should be, but today I got a new Driver Update from Nvidia for Specially for Windows 10 It installed fine and asked to restart so I did and it restarted like normal until It asks to type my password in after that, I get a Black screen after I type in my password it has the mouse pointer and Ctrl+Alt+Del works I tried to open task manager(to manually run file explorer.exe) but it won't work I have an acer laptop(E5-573G-76NF) and I don't have the Windows disk to access recovery options as windows 8.1 pre-installed so I can't Do a system restore.
View 1 RepliesI just bought this computer a few weeks ago and this problem has been persistent since I've gotten it. sometimes when I login, the screen is black or partially black, the rectangle for my pin is still visible however. My screen is touchscreen. I can "erase" the black with my finger and the normal login screen appear underneath. Inputting my pin is no problem and after login I don't see this problem anywhere else.

View 2 RepliesI made the update today. Finally windows starts up, desktop appears but everything went very slow. I decided to make a restart. So far "so good".
After restart, after login screen, it has a black screen and nothing happens. If I move the mouse it will show it. The black screen remains. I try to go to safe mode, with shift + restart. Not working either. What can I do??
I downloaded Windows10 two nights ago, the download seemed to go well until it came time logging on. I was able to enter my password, pressed enter and got a black screen rendering my laptop useless.
View 1 RepliesMy hp 500-110et just sits there with a blue hp logo(changed crap as the windows logo). I noticed something, the "loading ring(the one which shows that windows is loading/booting/starting up)" isn't there from the start.
I ran disc repair, it said it would take more than a hoır, but it never finished, so I had to close it. I was just playing AC U, then it froze, so I had to shut my system down from the power button... After I started my pc... you know what happened.
So i tried updating my computer from windows 8 to 10 and last night and it froze at 75% and configuration settings 1%, i let it sit there all night but it still was at 75%. I had read that people where having the same problem and that itll revert to windows 8.1 after you reset it so i did. To my surprise it booted as windows 10 and allowed me to log in but after i logged in my computer black screened without a cursor. I reset it several times but the same problem kept occuring.
View 2 RepliesI upgraded a desktop computer from Windows 7 ultimate to Windows 10 and there seems to be an annoying black screen issue which happens before the login screen.
After the Windows loading logo, the screen stays black for about 60-80 seconds (and all I can see is the mouse cursor). After 60-80 seconds, the login screen pops up and everything works fine and I can login.
I already tried the following:
- Updated NVIDIA drivers
- Completely removed NVIDIA drivers to see if it was a drivers problem
- Booted into safe mode, still happens
- Checked event viewer, nothing weird in the logs
- Made the PCIE slot the default slot for the primary monitor in the BIOS
- Ran the sfc /scannow command, no violations found
- Ran all Windows updates
- Took a look at the services and startup processes, nothing weird here
- Turned fast boot off/on, no change
- Full Malwarebytes scan, no infections found

I'd like to keep the fresh installation option as a last resort.
Last night I set my lenovo y50 to update to windows 10 after I went to sleep. Now that I'm awake i get the windows 8 lockscreen but after I enter my pin I get a black screen with a cursor. I can open taskmanager, and I have gotten several error messages regarding ismagent.exe and sethc.exe.
View 1 RepliesJust upgraded my bro-in-law's HP Pavilion desktop from 8.1 to 10. It's got an AMD processor, but I don't know which one exactly...probably one of the lower level ones. It was a refurb from Fry's, purchased a couple of months ago. It was running 8.1 just fine.
The upgrade process to win 10 went smoothly, got the pretty picture and the standard login screen, entered login info and got a series of messages welcoming me to win 10 and that the system was being configured. Then a message that said the install was "taking a bit longer than usual" and to wait a while longer. Stayed on this for about 10 minutes, and then screen went black with a cursor. And it's been that way for the past two hours. Just leaving it for now hoping it will magically come up with the win 10 desktop, but so far no love.
I keep finding solutions for the issue with a black screen before login or after login and to use the task manager, but my problem is a little different.
I can log in using my pin, and press ctrl+alt+dlt to get the option to bring up the task manager. However, when i click it... no task manager pops up!
After an update, my win 10 machine will boot to a generic setup, it loses my software, settings, etc. If I reboot a couple of times or shut down and reboot, everything show back up and it runs fine.
View 9 RepliesI just upgraded a new laptop to Windows 10 with the latest build. Everything was great until I rebooted after uninstalling some bloatware and now I can't get back into Windows. The login screen comes up and the only user account (admin) is listed, but there is no where to enter the password. This has be baffled.
I've been trying to get into safe mode, but the HP Envy 15 that I'm using doesn't seem to want to let me do that.
I just got my new PC with Windows 10 and I have 2 problems.
Firstly any item I click on is not highlighted with a color and it hard to tell what is selected.
Secondly whenever I restart my PC after logging in there is a black screen that appears after a few seconds and then disappears.
It goes away but it's a bit worrying and I don't know what's causing it.
A couple of days ago without warning my Toshiba Satellite S50D-A Laptop's Windows password screen, the taskbar, and the address bar have all turned black. I wouldn't necessarily care, but its annoying and I am also not able to click on the windows button (Even the one on my keyboard doesn't work) or at random times anything close to the battery meter.
My computer is fully updated, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling display drivers, and ran file checker with nothing coming up. I also checked to make sure I wasn't in safe mode. I would really like to not have to reinstall windows if I don't have to.
The black screen occurs before login screen. It happens randomly. I have to move the mouse (haven't tried pressing keyboard) and it will show the login screen and windows will continue normally. On my device driver it shows only 1 display adapter that is NVIDIA GTX 970. My motherboard is H87-PLUS and its specs shows that it does have an Integrated Graphics Processor.
Tried installing Intel Graphics Driver but just shows 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software.' Tried disabling the lock screen too but its not working. Tried putting PCI-E as the default graphics in BIOS but its not working either. how could I prevent the black screen from showing up again?
