Every time i want to delete a file or folder off my desktop i get the message : Invalid MS-DOS Function. I am therefore unable to delete anything off my desktop. Is there a fix for this?

View 15 RepliesOkay I just upgraded to Windows 10 this morning and I had all of my downloaded files from other websites all in the desktop under a folder called software after the upgrade it opened up Windows 10 and ran me through the tutorial, and had me reboot after I change some settings. when it rebooted it took about 20 minutes said something about some new features and "we want to show you new features" and others some other junk.
Finally when I did pull the explorer back up the only thing that was there was the recycle bin, my computer, and the downloads folder which was empty I went through every inch of my hard drive I even went over it with undelete Pro and still no traces of my files they were archive files and setup files for software. when I finally did find a trace of one of my old folders, the only thing that would it would tell me was that it was unavailable and that it must've been moved or deleted I took a picture of the error message and can't find answers anywhere..
I have various files throughout my hard drive which error "Invalid MS-DOS Function" if I try and move or delete them however they "work" normally if I try and use them.
I ran a check disk which returned no errors.
I am feeling this may be a format job however I'd like to avoid that if possible ..
If I take ownership and delete Cortana from Windows/SystemApps will my search function on the taskbar still work (that is, search within the PC)?

I booted from USB (WinPE/Paragon) and accessed command prompt from there. Deleting the folder: invalid folder name.I can rename the folder, but not move it.

I keep getting this message randomly after upgrading to Windows 10. It pops up once maybe every 15 minutes and interrupts anything that I'm doing. I do not know how to recreate it, but it consistently pops up.

New PC build on MSI Gaming 5 motherboard. Put in an OEM System Builder Windows 8.1 Pro disc and clicked upgrade, not install. Now the machine won't install Windows and if I re-enter setup, it tells me invalid product key. Any way to reverse this or how can I get the OS installed?

View 1 RepliesAbout a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. View 9 RepliesI purchased a new hard drive yesterday for the use of nothing but TV and movies. Hard drive works fine, no issues with that. However, a weird issue I'm having is when I moved over my TV and movies from my D: drive to my new drive, the TV folder became, for all intents and purposes, locked.
All my TV is on my new drive and I can view it fine, so that's not an issue. However, for whatever reason, I still have a TV folder on my D drive. As far as I can tell, it's completely empty, but it refuses to delete. I've tried standard deleting, as well as running the CMD prompt as administrator and trying a "del" command, to no avail.
If I attempt to open it, it opens a dialogue box with the title Location Not Available, and it reads "D:TV is not available, access is denied."
If I try to delete it normally, it says I need admin access, which I provide, and then it says access denied anyway.
If I view the security properties, it says I don't even have permission to read the properties of the file.
For some reason, I cannot import this registry script I made. Syntax seems to be correct. I'm thinking it's most likely an invalid key somewhere. Look at the attachment, what is causing this error: "The specified file is not a registry script."

A file named customrefresh.wim remains on my C: drive. 9 Gb big. I believe it is a leftover from windows 8.1. I suspect the folder was created by windows 8.1 in connection with creating a USB recovery drive for the 8.1 system. I should have erased it then, but forgot. Can I do it now?

I tried changing the permissions to my admin account and all, but I'm still not able to remove it.

Is it ok to delete Music, pictures, and videos folders from C:/Users/user? I recall this not working and having to hack the registry a bit to make it work in Windows 7. How can I do it in Windows 10? I really don't need these folders as I find they just clutter up my file explorer and anyway I choose to store my media elsewhere.

View 2 RepliesI've just made a very simple batch file for cleaning my temp folder. I've put the .bat file in my startup folder so it would clean TEMP when i log in. I've wrote down the following lines:
rd D:TEMP /s /q
md D:TEMP
As i said, very simple. But the problem is that it is not working. I also think i know why; there are files and folders in the temporary folder that are in use so the batch file can't delete them.
When trying to copy and paste a file from File Explorer (or Desktop), my "Paste" operations remains disabled. As if the copy operation never actually copied the file. I also noticed that when I select "Cut" (file/icon becomes somewhat transparent), then moment I right click on the location where I would like to paste, the file/icon that the transparency stops, and once again the "Paste" function is not available.
The same goes for Ctrl+X/Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. This also does not work.
When I boot into safe mode the operation works however, and intermittently in "normal" mode the operation does work. It seems as if some service/driver/thing stops the functionality.
Using Windows 10 Home.
If I search within a folder for say *.* and then delete a file, the list of files does not refresh.
The file remains listed even though it's been deleted.
If I manually refresh then the file disappears from the list. Same thing happens if I undo the delete.
I need to hit F5 to make the file reappear in the search list.
For the past few months File Explorer "hangs" (freezes) when I attempt to perform any function (delete, move, copy, check properties, etc) on any selected file. I am using Windows 10 (Build 102400). When I launch File Explorer it comes up immediately and all panes in the window look perfectly normal.
But when attempting any function, the "you'll have to wait forever" blue ring comes up, and nothing else happens. A second right click of the mouse initiates the "not responding" message in the top line of the window, and still nothing else.
The programs just hangs in this state for about 15 minutes, after which the action select pull-down pane appears and you can then proceed to successfully carry out any normal file management function you may wish.
I know they're promising native MKV support. I'm hoping this means I can stream straight to my TV or Xbox by right clicking the file and choose the "play to" option but I don't ever remember this being confirmed.
View 6 RepliesI recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
While I am composing an E-Mail in Win Live Mail 2012 in Win 10, It will go into the drafts folder before I have sent it.I have to open the draft folder to copy and paste it to the message folder. How do I prevent the E-Mail messages I am composing from going to the draft folder?

Where it came from and how to stop it. It pops up about every hour or so, all day long.
Three weeks after upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 from Microsoft a message saying "Windows 10 Home Build 10240" appeared in the right-hand corner of my desktop last night. As I like to have a completely clear desktop. no icons etc. this is a nuisance.
