View 2 RepliesI am trying to move a folder/directory to Start Menu, but when I drag it onto the start menu, it just shows red circle with line through it... How do I add folders to start menu left side?
View 7 RepliesWell with windows 10 and all of it's new and in a lot of cases annoying features is the new start menu layout where the important part of the start menu is thin as hell and the right side is unimportant.
So how does one make the left side wider so it will list full names and whatnot of things....
I did an upgrade from win 7 to 10. Some glitches, but nothing I can handle. But i didn't like when u pin down a short cut on the start menu, it went to right. I want some program to pin down on the leftside, like win7. Is it possible to do that on win10?
View 7 Replies....referring to the huge blank space Microsoft has provided on the left side of the start menu below the "most used" programs and above the folders selected in the Personalization/Start settings.
Is this not customizable? Or any workaround for this besides a third party program?
Every tutorial I could find on the internet indicates I should get a "Pin to Start Menu" when I drag a shortcut directly onto the Start button. But all I get is a "Link" icon. And when I drop the shortcut, it goes into oblivion.
I am having a few issues with Windows 10, when my PC is left idle i find that it will blue screen.. i uploaded a few crash dumps from this issue [URL] .....

2) Rename one of the existing folders there to what folder you want it to be
3) Right-click > Properties to said folder and set new destination folder address
4) Go to Settings App > Personalization > Start > Choose Which Folders Appear on Start
5) Select Original Folder Name (i.e. Pictures) that you corresponded to new location
Result will be:
How to add new titles to the settings app screen, we can do this without replacing the original folders... will test with a .exe file and post results shortly.
.exe files do work:
This will allow for 9 (because settings isn't possible to change) programs/folders to be pinned to the left pane of the start menu. I am working on figuring out how to modify the icons....
Back in the good old days of W7, you could pin an application to the start menu and it would appear on the left hand side and it would also offer a list of recently opened things within that application as a right arrow for ease of selection.
For example, within putty I have 2 saved sessions, when I pinned putty to the start menu in W7, it would pin the main program, but a right-arrow would accompany it and let me easily select Saved Session 1 or Saved Session 2 without having to launch putty manually. Similarly for something like notepad, you could pin that and it would come with an arrow and let you open your most recent opened documents without having to open notepad first and then selecting your text file. See attached W7 example png.
The W10 start menu does not let you do this at all. I can pin programs to the pig awful tiles section but critically it does not provide me with an easy method of selecting something within an app to launch via that app without launching that app first. It must be capable of doing something like it because the default File Explorer menu has the arrow and selection box.
The hack I can come up with is somehow manually editing my MRU list but is it easier than that? Is there reasonably well built in method for doing simple customisations to the W10 start menu! And if not, tell me how I can manually edit my MRU even though it throws the whole concept of recently used out the window if I'm just going to add stuff to it that I want.
For some reason many icons have no picture and are left blank. how to fix this?
View 1 RepliesI have msi laptop Windows 7 now I updated online to Windows 10 and reset. After reset now my laptop screen is blank and dash line blinking on top left side. Nothing working tried lot by pressing f10, f2, ctrl+alt+del...
View 7 RepliesMy Screen is displaying off center to the right just a little. I only found one other mention of this on another forum with no solution. There is a black strip on the left hand side of my screen. The other post was on a MS forum they theorized it had to do with the Intel HD device driver. I did not have this problem with Windows7. Hope the graphic card I have coming will fix this.

{Taskbar 1} {Taskbar 2}
I want to have it so if I open Chrome is Taskbar 1, it'll open on Monitor 1... and same with Taskbar 2 on Monitor 2.
Right now, they all open on Monitor 2 (primary). How to make it if I click on an icon on T1 it'll always open on M1 and T2 on M2?
All my desktop icons are stuck on the left side of the desktopAll file explorer view are stuck in details view. Now yes, I have turned off Auto-arrange, still refreshes to all icons on left. I have tired ALL sorts combinations of view + sort by... nothing. I have tired many anti-malware/virus scans and nothing has come up. I have tired CCleaner pretty much everything and the problem persists.
Of note, I had done a system restore a week and half ago to a specific point and that fixed the problem but for just a day, then it happened again. When I got around to having time to go for another system restore, that restore point was gone and now no other restore point is fixing the issue -_-That left me to think it might be something I installed or perhaps a windows update... but after having uninstalled pretty much everything I could that I installed in the last week as well as removing recent updates.... nothing. I have also tried making a new windows account (local)... nothing. Also tried in safe mode, still nothing.
I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...
View 9 RepliesI just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and I have a 2 monitor setup. I like to drag/drop windows from one monitor to the other, but Windows 10 has a barrier it seems right in the top corners. If I'm on the left monitor, and I go to drag a window to the right monitor, it will hang in the top right corner of the left monitor and not move, until I move the cursor down slightly, then it'll let me move it. Is there a way to remove that stopgap so I can move windows freely from one monitor to the other without having to go around the top corner?
View 7 RepliesBrand new Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) Dell Desktop.
Replaced old XP system (which ran like a swiss watch).
If I turn off the monitor (which I do every night as I need the computer on 24/7) when I turn it on all the desktop icons have moved back to the left.
This DOES NOT happen on a reboot or a shut the computer down and turn it on.
Medium icons, all power saving is turned off, auto arrange icons and align icons to grid are both unchecked.
With windows 7 it was so easy, when I had two windows open, be it word, a browser or windows explorer to chose show windows side by side......they seemed to snap together or were easily encouraged to do so.
With windows 10 the two windows seem to stay over to the left of the screen and both only take up approx 50% of the screen....I try and stretch them to, which works of a fashion but not remembered next time I start the PC....
Not sure urge if there is something I should be doing to make this work better...
Win 10 show windows side by side shows them stacked instead of side by side.....
View 8 RepliesWindows 10 will not show windows side by side on right click Task Bar command. In Windows 7 when I had 2 panels open and I wanted to display them side by side, I would go down to the task bar right click and select "Show Windows side by side"
Now after upgrading to windows 10 Pro when I do this I find that the panels are stacked one on top of another contrary to the instruction.I then experimented with "Show windows stacked", and in fact that is what it does.So now my problem is that Windows 10 will not display panels "side by side" when that function is selected.
How can I do that on surface pro 3 ?
Cuz I didn't find an option, how can I snap up for 3 or 4 apps side by side. Is it even possible in Windows 10 ?
After upgrade from windows 7 everything works properly. After o while it was not possible to open the START MENY by left click the windows 10 icon in the lower left corner. Right click works ok. What is the reason to that?
View 1 RepliesI left-click on the windows icon, but nothing happens. Right-click, though, gives a pop-up list. How to restore the left-click behaviour?
View 13 RepliesI've been running a multi-monitor setup for a while now, with an ASUS VG248QE 144Hz monitor as my main, and one or more spare monitors as secondary displays. I've set the ASUS monitor to 144Hz without issue in the past, while the other monitors stay at 60Hz.
The other night, Windows wanted to update. I figured it was the usual patch session, so I let it do its thing. However, after restarting my computer, I noticed that my ASUS monitor would only operate at 144Hz if it was the only monitor plugged into the system. When I try to set it higher in the Nvidia control panel, it just reverts back to 60Hz after applying changes. I updated my graphics drivers (though I was only one version behind) and even sought a special ASUS driver for the monitor to resolve the issue, but nothing has worked.
Did Windows recently add a forced refresh rate sync between all monitors recently? If so, that really sucks because I only own one 144Hz monitor.
I installed Windows 10 and found some apps did not fit the monitor screen (too big). I went in and changed the monitor resolution to a larger size (windows recommended 1920 x 1080) but I tried something larger, and now the monitor has a black screen with a little box moving around which says "input not supported". Not being able to use that monitor to go in and change it back, I hooked up a flat screen t.v. which worked but Windows only showed the current monitor size (which was smaller than the original monitor.
I tried the monitor on another computer I have also running Windows 10 and it worked fine. It shows the resolution as 1920 x 1080. When I plugged it back into the original computer I get the same plack screen with "input not supported" so I can't change it there. I suspect the issue is with the registry somewhere in Windows 10 on the first computer, but what the problem is. I've been working on this for a whole day now. You can probably tell I'm not well versed in computer technology. I just want my old monitor back (Acer K272HL) and I promise I won't mess around with it again.
I recently got a new monitor, an Eizo EV2750, which Windows only recognizes as a generic PnP monitor.
I've tried connecting it thorugh DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI without any luck. The often mentioned sollution, to unlplug everything and wait 10 minutes, does not work either.
The graphics card seems to read the EDID however, as in nVidia control panel it displays correctly as EV2750. Same thing with other applications, like DisplayCAL which I use as my color management system.
Seems like it's only an issue with Windows. This issue, however, also means that I can't get full functionality from the monitor. For instance, the ambient light sensor does not work (which is typical when Windows doesn't recognize the display properly).
So recently I upgraded to windows 10 at the same time I got a 4k display. When I set the display scaling to 150% on my main 4k monitor and ensuring that the scaling stays at 100% on my other two 1080p monitors, the entire chrome application is blurry when viewing on the 1080 monitors, and I cannot seem to fix this. Other applications seem to be okay.
Furthermore after the scaling change, some icons on my 1080 monitor's desktop get larger, as if some scaling is applied to them. Is there any solution to this? At the moment I have had to set the scaling back to 100% on my main monitor in order to use chrome on the smaller monitors.
