I needed to delete the first profile that had been set up as the person had left the charity I work with. I followed the directions to delete the user. All fine except the MS login has gone but the local id remains and is the first profile on the login screen. I have to skip it to get to the live user profiles. Is this a bug. I have run Delprof2. Nothing is found for this user and its not listed under users anywhere.
View 4 RepliesI simply wanted to remove a long dead hotmail account from my user sign in account and update it with my current outlook email. Seems innocent enough. After much searching and finally finding out that you simply can't do this logical task, I found the 'magic formula' to achieve my goal. The problem is, Windows gives me an 0x80004005 error code after I complete filling out the information for the Local user, preventing it from being created. So it's not possible to switch to local, then switch back.

I now have several docs that I want to delete but i cannot do so. When I look this up on the internet I am told to delete them as I would any other doc. but I can't do this because I can only delete docs that are on my desktop and I can delete by clicking the right hand button and get a sub-menu with delete on it.
The LO docs only appear in LO and clicking the RH button does not produce a menu with delete on it.
I would like to reset (delete all my licenses - activation) my PC as new one but without delete programs.
View 1 RepliesI want to always Permanently Delete (Shred) files and folders on my PC so that no one can recover those data. Now I heard for a program called Eraser which allows us to shred files/folders by clicking right click of mouse on the files/folders and then choosing Shredding (Permanently Delete).
So my question is: can I normally delete all files/folders which means that those files/folders are now in Recycle Bin. And then I just open Ccleaner and I set Secure Deletion to Very Complex Overwrite (35 passes) and I also check 3 boxes there (Wipe Alternate Data Streams, Wipe Cluster Tips and Wipe MFT Free Space) and I also check Local Disc (C) and Local Disk (D) boxes and then I just click Run Cleaner and now all the files from Recycle Bin will be Permanently Deleted (Shredded) and no one will be able to recover those files? If this is true, then I don't need Eraser to permanently delete (shred) files/folders.
I encountered a very strange problem last night. A bit of backstory first:
This is my second 'reset' of Windows 10. My first attempt to update into W10 went smoothly for about 1.5 months, then I got a black screen that looped continuously and would not get past startup. After trying many solutions, I figured the installation was corrupted, and started anew.
Everything on this incarnation of W10 has been fine, for about a month. However, last night, something VERY STRANGE occurred. As I went to switch the video I was watching in VLC, I double-clicked a video to load into VLC. VLC changed the video, but my PC lagged for about 20 seconds (unusual for my PC to lag at all). When it stopped, I went to look at my desktop, which is on my first monitor (second monitor has video playing on it), which was previously covered by full-screen explorer to look for the video. I was extremely surprised when I noticed that every. single. icon. was gone from my desktop, except the folder that housed the video I picked to watch.
The only things left were the Garbage Bin and that folder. I figured they went into the Garbage Bin on mistake. Checked. Nothing.
Long story short, after I went into 'My PC' to look in other folders, I was utterly baffled to notice that 400 GBs of data had been deleted from my computer. Yes, everything that was on my desktop (massive amount of videos, games, etc) were gone. Simply.. deleted.
After looking EVERYWHERE for the files, included my Program Files, Windows.Old, etc, and realizing that the items had not only been deleted, but REMOVED FROM PROGRAM FILES in many instances, I did a System Restore. Unfortunately, this did nothing except restore the FOLDERS, as the files themselves are still gone, and the 400 GBs is still missing.
I bought a new Acer Aspire desktop about 6 weeks ago and immediately upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10. I have intermittent problems with accessing both Gmail and Facebook, often having to switch browsers, shut down all browsers and reopen, or reboot the computer. Even when I gain access it doesn't last for more than an hour or so before I start to have trouble following links, viewing pictures, etc. I have AVG (full version) installed and have checked Firewall options. I ran Malwarebytes once and that worked for a while (deletion of registry entries??) but then the problem recurred.
View 6 RepliesI cant make a folder to full access. It remains as READ only always, when I try to unmark the square mark. Its like there in all of my files and folders. Do anything special to do to make them full access other than unmarking read only ?

Aside from the SSD which is for the OS I have a standard HDD. How do I go about formatting both hard drives so they're completely fresh?
Will the W10 install automatically format my SSD and then it would just be a case of going into Computer and formatting the HDD?
since I have updated my dell laptop an inspiron 15 3000series to windows ten I cannot turn off airplane mode and thus cannot turn my wifi on. I have tried everything I found on the net from device manager to command prompt downloading new drivers and yet also to simple stuff like pressing the PrtScr key. I am desperate, I am an international student n the only way I can call my parents for free is via the net(i.e wifi) but it is not working.

View 7 RepliesI am looking to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10. I have a PC with Windows 7 and core applications on an SSD. For storage I have a 1TB HDD. I have heard that the clean install of Windows 10 is the way to go but I don't want to go through the trouble of backing up everything. I was wondering if I can do a clean install on just the SSD, so the hard drive remains unaffected, but the SSD is wiped and a clean Windows 10 is installed.
View 1 RepliesI am running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. Whenever I set the option "Turn off the display" to "Never", it reverts back to the default "15 minutes". This is under the "High Performance" profile. I have never, since Windows 3.11, ever had a setting change itself back. I have tried to change it and restart. It will either revert upon restart or shortly after. It will revert back even if I do not restart.
View 2 RepliesSurface Pro (original 128GB model). Upgraded from 8.1 to 10. All that went well. I turned off a number of tracking items, wifi sense, and left Cortana off.
I am running into a couple of problems(?) and they may be related. I have my tablet set to go into sleep mode when I close the keyboard cover - original MS keyboard that I bought with the Surface. Even in sleep mode, my tablet gets and remains hot or overly warm to the touch.
I also noticed that it seems to be "eating" a lot of upload wifi band width (according to my TWC tool). I have 200/20 for wireless and the Surface is holding /using 5+ upload consistently. I have cycled it on/off and other than Windows 10 I only have MSO 2010, iTunes, Amazon Cloud Player, Kindle, Chrome, Google Drive and Dropbox installed.
Even when using disk cleanup in admin account it will say deleted but after restarting and going back into disk cleanup they are back.Even using Windows app they come back after deletion.On another note system restore doesn't seem to work , i did a system restore and even though i got the message that system restore completed successfully after i rebooted my screen was frozen and i had to do a system refresh to get it up and running again.I have been waiting for it to delete my temp files for 8 minutes already.

Just got laptop for Christmas and has always had this problem so might be a setting.
Have looked at Advanced -> Visual Settings but didn't see any that looked like would fix (tried setting Best Performance - which turned everything off but didn't fix)
I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old. How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall
View 1 RepliesI upgraded my kids' computer to Windows 10. It had an administrator account (for me to set things) and two separate user accounts for my daughter and my son.
I made the *mistake* of logging into Chrome with my Gmail acct ID while on my Daughter's user account.
Now, it's no longer her account. It has a password (It never had a password before). And instead of her name, it's literally my gmail account name.
I need to take some time to clean out the user account settings, but she has her steam, minecraft and other settings on her account. I don't really want to trash it and make a new one.
Can OneDrive be used with a local account? I Know I would have to login with a MS account but can this be done from a local account?
View 3 RepliesI have internet service from AT&T which worked great until I updated to windows 10. My pc now connects to the wifi just find, I can download updates, but I can not browse a web page. When I go into open a web page I get an error that the page can not be displayed. If I vpn to my work it works just fine then. I have reset the browser settings, created a new account on my pc and nothing has worked.
View 6 RepliesThe last update triggered (13-01-2016) the loss of access to the start menu, many apps, as well the apps store and MS Edge. The exact same thing happened with the first version of Win 10 Pro received as an upgrade from WIN 7.
This time, as soon as build 1511 was received, I immediately created a ISO USB stick and then proceeded to use the machine as normal. At some stage, I created a Local Account with Administrator rights as I am the only user of the PC.
After the January upgrade, I can no longer switch back to the MS Account as the screen where one is supposed to be able to do this under [settings/accounts/Your email and accounts] does not load anymore, thus removing the option to switch back to a MS account. The screen is just blank.
I ended up activating the in-built Administrator account so that I could try and see what was going on.
I now notice under C:users the following user folders:
(1) Administrator
(2) Default
(3) Default.migrated
(4) DefaultAppPool
(5) My Name ---- I presume this is the user profile for my MS account?
(6) My Name (Local ----- This is the created local Account
yet the "name of the account" when I log in has been truncated to My name L
Is this why the settings page for accounts cannot find the profile information which will allow me to switch back to my MS account?
I feel I have to unravel this mess before going any further in trying to establish why the start menu and all the apps have now "dissapeared"
Of course I can just redo the clean install but I feel I should first sort out the user profiles before going any further.
I have found many questions on a missing AppData/Roaming folder but none on a missing Local folder. I am trying to follow the path: 'C:UsersYour User PC NameAppDataLocalBlack_Tree_Gaming' to delete a config file as Nexus Mod Manager is not opening. But I am stopped because of the missing folder. I have already showed hidden files but it is still not there.

They are locked down tight with local GPO and is not in a domain since they need only Internet access. We have now switched to Windows 10 as OS on new computers and I was wondering if I could some how just copy the local GPO from the old Windows 8 computer so I did not have to run through all options and set the them again in order to lock the new computers down as tight due to security.
View 1 RepliesMy computer crashed and when it rebooted, it required me to login with my Microsoft account. Now, this computer has had a local account since I got it 5 or 6 years ago. I have never used the Microsoft account on this computer.
Trying to switch back to the local user using guides on this site, that local account apparently doesn't exist anymore.
I'm obviously concerned that it deleted an account on its own. How do I get the account back? Creating a new one is easy enough, but are there any permission issues? I have enough of those between Windows 10, and the previous 7 installation.
So, not sure what it is that I did but something to do with one of the Microsoft services had me sign in using my email and password to the live Microsoft stuff (might have been trying to play solitaire).
Now when I boot up my desktop, it's always asking me for my password which I don't want to deal with as it's quite the extreme password. I think prior to signing in on Solitaire Win 10 never asked me for a password as it was being used local account.
How do I switch it back to being a local account so that I don't have to sign in to my desktop every time that I start it up.
