Making Taskbar Icons Small Gets Rid Of Giant Search Bar For Cortana?
Jan 23, 2015Just something neat I noticed since I couldn't find any way to make it smaller.

View 1 RepliesI find the new taskbar icons in Win 10 to be annoyingly small. Is there a way to make them appear bigger?
View 9 RepliesI have tried everything under the sun to fix this. The search/Cortana button on the taskbar is unresponsive. Whenever I try to adjust setting under Cortana & Search I get this error:
ms-cortana://StartMode=Settings&QuerySource=Settings
The app didn't start
A guy in my office just upgraded to windows 10 and it looks completely different from other installations I've seen. The start button isn't the 4 equally-sized rectangles, the top left one is hollow and bigger than the other 3, if that means anything. Anyway, when "use small taskbar buttons" is unchecked in taskbar properties, the first few taskbar buttons are hidden behind the search box on the taskbar.
I found this out by accident because I opened one more window and it barely peeked out from the right side of the search box. What can be doing this? BTW this is not the icons in the notification area, these are the program buttons pinned to the taskbar. Also, his start menu doesn't have tiles, it looks almost exactly like the Windows 7 start menu. To me, it's starting to feel like a skin/theme for windows 7, rather than an actual upgrade, and he got taken in by someone, somehow.

View 3 RepliesSo, I decided to just do a reinstall of Windows 10 after having a couple of issues and downloading software such as iObit that is questionable at best (just found that out, glad I did some research online) and everything has been going really smoothly in terms of updating programs, apps, etc., but I just found this weird glitch or bug if you will. Take a look at the screenshot attached. Doing the simple ctrl+mouse wheel will make the desktop icons larger or smaller, but for some reason the text size is still SUPER small. My resolution settings are normal for Windows 10 (250% recommended) and I've never encountered this issue before.
View 8 RepliesI'm trying to get my small taskbar to display both time and date, like the regular big taskbar. By default, Windows displays time and date on the taskbar in bottom-right corner. But if you go into taskbar's properties and select the option to show smaller icons, the taskbar becomes a little bit smaller (which is great) and there's no room for date to be displayed (which is not great at all).
I found a few "solutions" for Windows 7, like using some third-party apps to override the default one (but there's all kinds of issues with them), or creating a new toolbar pointing to a folder that is being renamed everyday via schedule (ridiculous!) and so on.Back when I was using Windows 7, I found a dark theme that actually solved this problem (google "cryeR deviantart windows 7 basic black theme"). You had to take ownership and replace the Aero.msstyles file, and then patch some stuff with provided utility. Kinda complicated, but it worked. Now I'm on Windows 10, and I can't find anything that would work. I really like the smaller taskbar, but I would also like to see the date.
How can one show the date and time in the system tray having the small icons enabled:
View 4 RepliesI recently made some changes in the registry to make the shortcut icons go away as per a tutorial written by Daniel Rubinho in Windows Central. 2 days later i see black boxes around the shortcuts i have on desktop. Why this happened. How to Remove this?
View 2 RepliesA few days ago, after an automatic Windows 10 update on my desktop computer, I found that: right clicking icons on the taskbar does nothing - none of the options appear; the start button on the left of the taskbar only works by right-clicking and accessing the old Windows 8 style options; the search icon on the taskbar does nothing; the Windows 10 calculator has disappeared - when I press the calculator key on my keyboard a message appears saying "You'll need a new app to open this calculator". It seems to have been deleted from the computer.
Until these things happened Windows 10 was working well.
My taskbar is missing and my icons on the desktop are missing as well the background is dark ....

View 9 Repliesjust done a fresh install with the latest iso available. here it is the problem using search/cortana... (honestly i didn't care in the past, so i don't it's a normal beahaviour) -loggin in as administrator i can use the search and find settings like "system restore" or "personalize" -loggin in as limited user, no matter if local account or microsoft account, i can't search for settings and i get the message "incomplete" on top of the window... but all documents, images, start menu entries, etc. are showed perfectly. i googled around, but i couldn't find what happens to me. solutions are for completely broken search service. even create a new account or recreate the index didn't work.. is it normal for limited users?!? bug?!? i don't want reinstall again
View 5 RepliesI am enjoying Windows 10 very much, but I don't have the option for the Cortana search bar. When I right click on the taskbar and hover over Cortana, I can only choose between hidden and icon. I tried to change the value in the registry to 2, but that didn't work.
View 1 RepliesIf I take ownership and delete Cortana from Windows/SystemApps will my search function on the taskbar still work (that is, search within the PC)?
View 2 RepliesIn windows 10 it says I can chat with Cortana and ask it questions and get a personalized response, but this isn't the case for me. It says I can speak aloud or type, but since I've no mic, I choose to type.
When I ask it something like "How's the weather" or "How tall is Jeff Goldblum?" I get a bing search page that pops up instead of a Cortana response. All of the interests are enabled and such and I've filled out the about me with my name.
As soon as I start typing ANYTHING, it shows results for "The Web" and "My Stuff" but doesn't even try to ask Cortana the question.
I just reinstalled and there's no option in her settings to turn off the web search she does when you search for files on your pc and such. How else could I turn it off if its not listed in her settings?
View 5 Repliessearch box a.k.a cortana isn't working. I tried the method with task manager to end the process but it isn't working. how can i make this work?
View 4 Repliesesterday I had my Tablet PC (Windows 8.1) returned after the upgrade by a technician. I have encountered some issues, some fairly minor, others more significant ---- especially Cortana and Search not working:
1. Cortana does not work. She is said to be unavailable because of the language and region that has been selected. The language is English USA (needed for the keyboard) and the region is UK / GB, surely neither of which should be causing any problems?
2. Search does not work. It generates the error 'class not registered'. I have encountered this error before, so from searching in the past I have seen that this can be caused by a number of different factors, hence it is hard to identify what to do.
I will work on the other issues after these two have been resolved.
I have visited the How To site and found that my situation is commonplace, complicated and worldwide. There are many in a similar situation in the UK. On the one hand it is comforting to know that I am not alone and others have resolved the problems --- eventually. However, on the other hand I note that many of the postings date from July, and feel it should not still be continuing to happen now.
If I have understood it, the problems revolve around getting the settings for region / display language / speech language configured in a mutually compatible way.
This is a clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64. Search box on the taskbar does not work. Clicking on the Search box makes it change color, but it is not possible to type anything into the box. Opening Start Menu before clicking on the Search box sometimes works. In 1 case out of 10 Search box suddenly starts working. But it only happens when Start Menu is open. When Start Menu is closed, Search box is unresponsive. Trying to click on the Search box in such cases generates a barrage of entries in Event Viewer:
In Application log, lots of errors like this
Event 1000, Application Error
Faulting application name: SearchUI.exe, version: 10.0.10240.16401, time stamp: 0x55b1a665

Exception code: 0xc000027b

Sometimes Start menu and Search/Cortana buttons become frozen and only after hard boot they work.
View 4 RepliesMy cortana bar seems to be missing some important stuff when I search. Regedit is completely absent when doing search for one.
View 1 RepliesSo I just installed Windows 10 a day ago, and all I have to say is wow, Microsoft did great. I'm blown away by it's speed/ease of use! Anyways, when I click on Cortana, the only options that I have are to show or hide the Cortana icon, I don't have a "Show search box" context menu selection. I installed Windows 10 through the insiders program page when I installed.
View 8 RepliesI have no Ethernet what so ever... I updated everything I could including the Ethernet from ASUS. I get limited connection.
View 1 RepliesThe search box keeps popping open at random. I turned off Cortana but the search box keeps coming on. This is very annoying. If I want to do a search I'll open it myself. How can I stop the Cortana / Search box from popping itself on?
