Missing Desktop Link In User Folder?
Aug 3, 2015
if I right click on my music icon in explorer I can change the location of its contents in the location tab which I was trying to do, as I have my Mp3s in a music folder on my D Drive.
whilst trying to do that I accidentally moved it to the desktop location of my use folder. So now both the Desktop and music icons in my explorer are both linked to the same location, (users/username/music) and the desktop link in my user folder has gone.

I can't link a shortcut of my user folder to Quick Access. It only links the direct folder which has a silly name (created by the first five letters of my email address), and it's just so stupid to look at. I want Quick Access to refer to the shortcut as the 'User' directory, but this seems impossible to do without renaming the direct folder, which is not recommended at all.

I just got my hands on a new UX305 from ASUS and it's working wonderfully. However, I wanted to change the icons for the Desktop, Downloads, Music, etc. folders in Quick access in File Explorer. I was able to do it on my main rig, but there is no customize tab for most of the folders in quick access, and those that do still don't allow me to change the icon.

I have a huge issue with my desktop PC at the moment. Everything was fine when I was using my PC yesterday but upon startup today a system message appeared saying that the desktop file in the system32 folder couldn't be found and my desktop was a black screen with nothing but recycle bin(I did have lots of shortcuts and folders). Shorty after other applications such as Skype prompted me to locate the files or reinstall the software.
Using the recycle bin on the desktop i accessed the files(or lack thereof) to find all of the document, video, picture, ect. drives empty with strange string of random numbers and letters(looks like hexadecimal?) at the top where it would normally say "documents" or whatever. Whilst the documents are gone the C drive is perfectly intact with program files and other stuff. The start menu does not work either so I cannot access control panel or command prompt but "windows key + x" shortcuts still work.
To my knowledge I haven't installed any suspicious software as I am well versed enough in computers to not click any old pop up, in fact I do not remember installing anything. I can't access my PC specs as control panel cant be accessed but it is a vibox gaming pc and is on windows 10. I cannot access chrome or any internet browser on my PC.

I was in my users folders & deleted them (Download, Favorites, Videos etc...)Then, i realized that my start menu which has option to "ON" to make them appear, got issue with link missing.I recreated all the forders by default with windows tools (regedit & i have all references created in reg %USERPROFILE%* & in my user folder)
So... i've tried a last attempt by, creating a new user, & create Start Menu Places & pushing the links etc but even with that, nothing done (looks like it's more for people getting grey menu on/off)HOW to retrieve the missing link from elements in start menu for :
- Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos.
All the others links are working :
- Homegroup, Network, Personal Folder, File Explorer, Settings, Power, All apps.

I tried to move my Documents folder to another partition, but stupidly specified E: instead of E:Documents. I moved it back to the default location and fixed the Quick Access link but can't fix the folder link in "This PC".
The icon is E: instead of Documents, and it points to the E: folder.
How can I fix this? I assume I need the correct registry entries. I tried the tutorial to remove/restore the folder, but the hacks only hide or show the folder in "This PC". I don't want to remove/hide it anyway.

We all know that IE, Firefox, etc have the option to copy the download link of an ongoing download job. But it seems Microsoft had something really great in mind and has apparently removed that feature from Microsoft Edge I wonder wheres the 'Edge'??
how to bring back the useful 'copy download link' option of an ongoing download link in Edge?

I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using the free upgrade. Initially during the upgrade and configuration, I was using my account or profile. However, didn't see my wife's account at login. After install and setup was complete, I was updating a few programs out of date due to the upgrade, restarted, and at login only my wife's account was present. No option for me to login. I looked in the Settings/Accounts/Family & Other users and there isn't anyone else listed except her.
I still have a file under users on the C drive but not sure how to fix this without having to create a new account. There is also a profile for my account under System Properties/ User Profiles. During initial setup when I was logged in, my desktop setting were exactly how they were with Win 7. So, no clue as to why my login profile is no longer available for login or user switching.

After I upgraded to Windows 10 I am unable to click on any link in Outlook 2003. I get a popup that says "Locate link browser". I searched for a solution and read that I needed to associate it with IExplore.exe. After doing that, now whenever I click a link it opens IExplore to my home page. How I can resolve this error and get it to go to the URL rather than just opening IExplore?
Instructions I found were these but don't seem to apply to Windows 10:
On the desktop, double-click My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.In the Registered File Types list, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, click Advanced, and then click Edit.In the Actions box, type open.In the Application used to perform action box, locate Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe), and then click Open.In the Application box, type IExplore, and then click OK.

I have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also. The start button was/is also not working.
I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programmes on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way. Also, the keyboard settings have bizarrely changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark.I have Norton which suggests no virus involved.I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.is there anyway to fix this without doing a reset?

Have been working with Build 10074 for several days. Just realized yesterday that my main user folder has duplicate sub-folders (2 Documents, 2 Music, 2 Videos, 2 Downloads, 2 Pictures). They are the same size, have the same properties). Whichever one I delete, makes the other one unusable, where there is an error message like it doesn't exist. Is this a Registry problem? Now I am dual-booting on this particular installation with Windows 7.
When I boot into Win7 and access that User folder, it only shows SINGLE entries, no duplicate. What can I do? I have thought of creating a new user, moving my files into those new sub-folders, then deleting the original user. However, the main user with the duplication is a Microsoft account as opposed to a local account. So that complicates everything.

Does clean option, drop the last character of their user folder during the install?
Example, my user folder was called Julian on 8.1 Therefore c:UsersJulianDesktop blah blah blah.... Well now its c:usersjuliaxxxxxxx
Enough so for me to do a reformat and complete wipe and clean install. however now my Microsoft account must of caught wind of this new path and my new clean install is still Julia.
I'm about to reformat again... perhaps try a local account first, then merge it my Microsoft account.

I recently installed Win10 on a C SSD and set a D hard drive for my data. I have assigned default save to be D. FYI, I do have a C:User[name]Documents, Pictures, etc. also.
However, I found that on my drive D, there is a D:[name]Documents, Pictures, etc. So I included the sub folders into the Library. However, the D:[user]Documents folder does exist but I cannot change the permissions at all (Read Only). It is owned by the System.
Don't I need to take ownership back to make use of it? But how? Or do I just leave it alone. Right now, all save documents are going to C:[user]Documents. Other D:[user] sub folders, i.e., Pictures and Videos, are writable.

Is it ok to delete Music, pictures, and videos folders from C:/Users/user? I recall this not working and having to hack the registry a bit to make it work in Windows 7. How can I do it in Windows 10? I really don't need these folders as I find they just clutter up my file explorer and anyway I choose to store my media elsewhere.

If you start up the Windows Photos app, it opens with a screen displaying all the photos in your user/pictures folder in thumbnail form which I find highly annoying. I want it to start with a blank screen. Is there a way to do this? I thought I might get it to clear up by pointing the folder it monitors to an empty folder and removing the user/pictures folder from settings but the thumbnails are still there...

I have found many questions on a missing AppData/Roaming folder but none on a missing Local folder. I am trying to follow the path: 'C:UsersYour User PC NameAppDataLocalBlack_Tree_Gaming' to delete a config file as Nexus Mod Manager is not opening. But I am stopped because of the missing folder. I have already showed hidden files but it is still not there.

When I click one of the shortcuts in the start menu, I am informed that windows cannot find the specified location.
When I try to navigate to the location, windows wont let me select it. Windows is looking for a file to navigate to when I get that prompt but, I need to specify a folder to get the shortcut I want. I tried to use a shortcut as well but, when I select, it opens the file location and cant be used as a specified file from what I can tell.

Some days ago I logged as always on my Windows user, but there were no files on the desktop. I found that I'm on another user, which doesn't exist. After some research I found how to get my files back (went to Users/USER/Desktop) and cut>pasted them to the "new" desktop. After restarting my computer and logging in I was back on my old user. The problem is I've cut the files before and now I can't find them. There are only two users (Default and kluse_000 (ME)). Both desktop folders are clean. Tried to search for lost files with "find" command, but it takes too much time (should I leave it running?).

I have a touchscreen laptop and 3 user accounts, one of which is for my children (aged 3 and 5).
I would like to be able to make the default mode for my children's account 'tablet mode' (to make it as simple as possible for them to use and access key apps) while keeping the mode as 'normal desktop mode' for my wife and my accounts.
When I change my kids account to 'tablet mode' (using the switch in the 'Action centre') , when i log back into my account, that also then defaults to tablet mode, which is not what I want. Is there any way of setting different modes depending on the user?

I noticed today that the usual arrow at the bottom left of desktop shortcuts has been replaced by the user icon of two figures[URL]. When I go into security properties, there are two user groups that I don't see in other files. One called INTERACTIVE, and the other called Account Unknown(S-1-5-21-4180935659-2234933324-3389827175-1000). Upon doing some research, it was said these unknown accounts can pop up when an account was deleted. I only created one account on this computer since I built it, my main account. I scanned with Malware Bytes, which came up clean. I am currently scanning with Bitdefender as well. Trying to delete the user results in a message describing how I can not remove it as it is inheriting permissions from it's parent, and that I would have to disable the inheritance feature in order to remove it.
