I have issues with missing quick launch icons, tray icons and broken start button ALL AT ONCE (and I've installed win 10 just a few days before that), i did the DISM restore (using this [URL] ... ) but this happened.

View 9 RepliesI did a clean install, using the Media Creation Tool, of Windows 10 Pro x64 on my Maingear Shift computer (i7 processor, 16 GB RAM) a few weeks ago. I created a number of Quick Launch icons (to the right of the Start Button), and they have survived several weeks and innumerable reboots as I reinstalled all of my programs. This morning, out of the blue, (no programs installed for week now) and no changes to the computer of which I am aware, the Quick Launch icons themselves do not appear. The area of the toolbar, which shows Quick Launch is enabled (you can see the double bars on either side), is there, but there are no icons inside of the Quick Launch area.
I have run sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth from an elevated command prompt. SFC reported no resource integrity violations, and DISM reported that the restore operation was successful.
I also followed the POWERSHELL instructions in this Microsoft article: [URL] .... but it had no effect, though it too reported success.
What is interesting is that when I go the left column of the Start Menu, and under "Most Used" and right click on Google Chrome, it shows as pinned to the Taskbar. When I unpin it, the other five of six Quick Launch icons that I had pinned weeks ago to the Quick Launch Toolbar suddenly appear. Then I right click the Google Chrome entry in the "Most Used" column again and pin it to the Taskbar and it reappears. All is well, until I reboot, then it is back to the same old situation of missing Quick Launch icons.
I have done a lot of searching on Google, but haven't found an explanation for this behaviour. I have turned on and off the Quick Launch toolbar, but that has made no difference. I have warm-booted and cold-booted without effect.
I upgraded to Windows 10 today, however the start menu will not open, and only certain items work when I right click on the windows icon. Also, the quick launch icons on the task bar do not work, and won't even let me right click them.

I've recently created a thread stating that Start Menu, Settings and everything on taskbar were not working (such as volume control and wi-fi networks). I reinstalled Windows (clean install) and it was good again until today, when it started again.
I tried to open Settings via "ms-settings:" via Run, but it says that "limit time was reached" (It's a rough translation, as Windows language in my notebook is not in English). If I press Windows key + P (ms-settings:display), it won't open and I get a message that "this file has not an associated program to it to perform this task". Install a program, or in case there's one already installed, create an association in Defaul Programs control panel." Basically, this a list of what is not opening anymore:
Start Menu, Settings (and all options within it), Windows tray icons (power options, wi-fi networks etc.).
I've already rebooted Windows but I didn't fix anything. I don't know man, this is the second time this issue arises after a clean install. Windows 10 is buggy as hell, what's up with Settings and Start menu not opening anymore? Is Windows 10 still in beta? Seriously, did MS test Windows 10 at all? It doesn't look so. If this keeps happening I'll have to return to Windows 8.1 which was working fine
I do not know what happened, but I lost some file associations, such as opening .torrent files and magnetic links with utorrent and text files (.ini, .txt etc.) with Notepad++. Additionally, Start Menu and tray options, such as volume slider and wi-fi menu are not opening anymore. Settings starts, though. I already tried to apply that CSSEmerg67758.diagcab fix, but it didn't work. I can't perform a system restore as well, I get this error: ....
View 6 RepliesWhile trying to tweak Quick Access, I somehow broke it and no matter what I do, it is stuck as shown in the screenshot. It doesn't get removed or restored with the registry keys but I am also unable to add or pin anything to it and recent files/folders are not displayed.
is there a way to restore it? (Using 64-bit Windows 10 final build)
I upgraded Win 8.1 Pro to Win 10 Pro and I find that when I pin folders to the Quick Access, that they disappear from there the next time I start my laptop.
View 9 RepliesOn Windows 7 when you click on the icon for an open application on the quick-launch (taskbar) it toggles that app being in front or not. On Windows 10 it is closing the application. See image.
In Windows 10 is there a way to change the behaviour so it does NOT close the application when you click on the icon on the taskbar?
File Explorer and Settings icons are sometimes missing when I click the start button. But in the start button, when I click "All Apps" and then return to the start button, File Explorer and Settings sometimes return. Sfc /scannow shows no errors. This problem occurs only on my laptop, not my desktop. Why are they sometimes initially missing?
View 1 RepliesI downloaded Windows 10 several hours ago. Nothing in the lower task bar will open. When I left click on the start button, nothing happen. When I right click, I get a menu but nothing will open. When I click in the "Search" area, no cursor appears. I don't know how to get to my pictures or documents.
Why is my start button (or anything else in lower task bar) not working?
Also - I use Avast security protection. Since I downloaded Windows 10, my firewall is turned off with Avast. I clicked a button to turn it on, but I am not being allowed to do so. Do I need to change something in the Windows 10 settings. First I need to learn how to pull up the settings since the start button is not working.
I upgraded windows a few months ago. about a month ago my search bar and my start button didnt work and no matter what i clicked i couldnt get it to work. I wasnt to mad about that but now i cant right click my icons and ive tried restarting windows explorer and ive googled alot. Its starting to bug me to the point where it may be better to go back to windows 7 or do a fresh install to get rid of all the problems.
View 1 RepliesI have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also.
The start button was/is also not working. After a panic, I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programs on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way.
Also, the keyboard settings have changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark. I have Norton which suggests no virus involved. I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.
Something has suddenly changed on my computer (I used the AOL Computer Checkup program yesterday but this problem seems to have started today). When I left click on the Start Button, nothing happens. If I right click, I get a pop-up menu that is different than the Start page and is all in black and white. I don't know if the right click menu was there before because I don't think I have ever tried that.When I right click either the Word or the Excel icons in the taskbar, nothing happens (left clicking still opens the app as usual). In the past, if I right clicked the icon I would get a pop-up menu with the files that I had pinned to the taskbar plus the most recent files that I had used that weren't pinned.

None of the notification icons in the systray activate, so I can't access the notify center or change my wireless signal. View 3 RepliesI'm currently running Build 10130. For some reason, when I view "All Apps" I have folders for my desktop apps, but nearly all of the icons for the apps themselves are missing.
I have tried the following solutions & none have fixed the problem:
SFC /scannow
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I've run both of those alternatively 3X in a row - based on another thread)
Deleted the icon cache in my user folder
Run the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Update
Created a new local account & logged in.
Enabled the Administrator account & logged in.
Did a repair install of Build 10130
When I navigate to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I can see everything and it's all just fine. For some reason the icons simple refuse to appear on the start screen.
I've checked the permissions on those folders and they appear to be fine.
I've tried right clicking on a program and selecting "pin to start" and nothing happens.
I've checked C:UsersmynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms as well and it seems to be fine, but still nothing changes.
How is Windows 10 creating the Start screen icons? Is there a way to force it to rebuild everything?
Just got this error and couldn't find anything like this solved. The icons (or maybe the apps) are missing from the start menu.

All of the things I previously installed as also absent.. My windows computer four window icon produces nothing as well , having to manually shut it off..

So now the start menu won't open and I don't have the icons on the bottom right corner (time, wifi, etc.). I read several old posts about doing the "powershell" thing but it won't let me because it said I have to run it as an administrator on the console. So I'm stuck there because it's my laptop, wouldn't I automatically have admin rights on my own device?

This only happens with windows explorer, other programs like paint, chrome, ect are fine...
Right clicking on my computer somewhat seemed to fix it, but there is still missing text...
All modern apps have their icons broken in one way or the other.
For example, taskbar icons, left to right: Store, Mail, Calendar, Maps, Alarms
Or when I search in start menu:
Store
Maps
Mail
The icons display properly in All apps and when pinned as tiles.
Is there some way to hide some of my tray icons until i click on the "show hidden icons" down arrow in windows 10. My options seem to be either show or don't show.

View 1 RepliesI've been recently having a problem with duplicated items in taskbar and broken Jump Lists. I'm now using Windows 10 but this problem occurred in Windows 8.1 too but then it somehow fixed itself. Some programs that I pin to taskbar have a tendency to duplicate themselves when clicked on. For now, I've noticed this behaviour only in Skype and Spotify but it's still very annoying since duplicate icons take valuable taskbar space and even more - make Jump Lists of those programs broken, meaning that you can still see tasks program developers provided but after you click them nothing happens.
I've tried loads of times pinning, repinning, deleting whole User Pinned folder from %appdata%/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Quick Launch, clearing Jump List folders manually and automatically with Command Prompt commands as suggested here with no luck. The only thing I did achieve was when I pinned Skype to taskbar in my other user account, then copied the newly created shortcut from Use Pinned folder to my User Pinned folder - this made Skype Jump Lists working but duplicate icon in taskbar remained.
I've recently found a tutorial which may force taskbar to use only one icon per app but I can't check this right now as 7+ Taskbar Tweaker isn't yet officially available for Windows 10 users.
I don't know if this is related but I can't pin any Control Panel item to Quick Access whilst I can pin folders. Interesting side of this is that pinned Control Panel items appear in File Explorer's Jump List but after clicked I get a message that item is unavailable and that it might have been moved, renamed or removed.
Text on the desktop icons is hard to read. When I open anything else, like Chrome, Outlook, etc., the text is so light and broken that it is unreadable. I have a 2006 17" Dell monitor and an emachines desktop. Everything was sharp and clear on Windows 7.
