Missing User Account / Profile At Login
Aug 24, 2015
I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using the free upgrade. Initially during the upgrade and configuration, I was using my account or profile. However, didn't see my wife's account at login. After install and setup was complete, I was updating a few programs out of date due to the upgrade, restarted, and at login only my wife's account was present. No option for me to login. I looked in the Settings/Accounts/Family & Other users and there isn't anyone else listed except her.
I still have a file under users on the C drive but not sure how to fix this without having to create a new account. There is also a profile for my account under System Properties/ User Profiles. During initial setup when I was logged in, my desktop setting were exactly how they were with Win 7. So, no clue as to why my login profile is no longer available for login or user switching.

I just tried to log in to my Admin account and got the error "The user profile service failed the sign-in. User profile service cannot be loaded".I can log in to my user account and do admin tasks when prompted by UAC. SFC /SCANNOW shows no errors and CHKDSK shows no errors.I did a system restore at boot and can now enter the admin account but it has several access errors. I changed another user account to an admin account and that works. However, if I create a new admin account, I get the same error "The user profile service failed the sign-in. User profile service cannot be loaded".
I'm unsure how to proceed from here. Should I do an in place repair install or is there another fix? The fundamental problem is I can't create a new working admin account.

I am running Windows 10 onmy HP Pavillion. I upgraded from Windows 7 around a month ago. Recently I was running a disk battery calibration check and after I restarted from that I get the message when I login that the "User Profile Failed the Logon. User Profile Cannot Be Loaded". From everything I have seen online it sounds the best method is to login under safe mode as an admin and either create a new user profile or repair the current one.
Now the problem is when I go to advanced startup options and select safe mode, it starts up but then asks me to login using one of my two accounts. Neither is the administrator as this doesn't show up for me. The current account that I am getting error obviously won't work under safe mode and the other account I don't remember the password. I inserted a travel/jump drive to try and change the PW on this but it wouldn't work. So basically I have no way of getting to start it up as an administrator. The local PC place said WIndows 10 has had known issues with this. However I had this problem happen with Windows 7 too so I am not sure.

I have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also. The start button was/is also not working.
I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programmes on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way. Also, the keyboard settings have bizarrely changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark.I have Norton which suggests no virus involved.I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.is there anyway to fix this without doing a reset?

I just upgraded a new laptop to Windows 10 with the latest build. Everything was great until I rebooted after uninstalling some bloatware and now I can't get back into Windows. The login screen comes up and the only user account (admin) is listed, but there is no where to enter the password. This has be baffled.
I've been trying to get into safe mode, but the HP Envy 15 that I'm using doesn't seem to want to let me do that.

I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old. How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

When I try to login, I get the following error message:"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in.User profile cannot be loaded."I am literally unable to use my HP Envy laptop, which is running Windows 10, because of this. I do not even know how to get into safe mode. Though I haven't found safe mode yet, I was able to access system diagnostics via Escape (while rebooting). I tried to do a system restore, but it said I had errors on my hard drive and made me check and fix those errors.Next I tried Recovery Manager. But this just gives me a blue screen. Nothing comes up.

The user profiles which came across with the upgrade work perfect but when I decided to create another user profile and login, I cannot click on the Start menu button as it does not work!
I have had to use the command prompt logout.
I think when windows is creating a new user profile, it is not creating all the correct files but could be wrong!

I get an error "The user profile control failed at login"when trying to login for the first time to a newly added family account. I accept the invitation from another computer but get the error when trying to switch to the new profile. This account runs fine on another computer. I deleted this account from this computer using Windows 10 because windows mail stopped working. Now I can not reinstall the profile.

I upgraded my kids' computer to Windows 10. It had an administrator account (for me to set things) and two separate user accounts for my daughter and my son.
I made the *mistake* of logging into Chrome with my Gmail acct ID while on my Daughter's user account.
Now, it's no longer her account. It has a password (It never had a password before). And instead of her name, it's literally my gmail account name.
I need to take some time to clean out the user account settings, but she has her steam, minecraft and other settings on her account. I don't really want to trash it and make a new one.

Upgraded to W10 from W7 several months ago now and activated and used only the built-in Administrator account. Which is what I have done for many years now to stop the UAC popups.
However, I have soon discovered this Administrator account, while blocking the UAC popups has some serious limitations. Like cannot run Edge or any of the Metro Apps. Yes, I have tried the workarounds but they too have issues.
So how can I transferred all my settings for my programs and windows to another local username?

I upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 my dell insperion computer. the original conversion to windows 10 seemed to go OK for a few days. The about 2 days ago, I created a MS user account to access some of the MS store apps. Now the original Windows 7/10 user accounts - local accounts i guess - 3 of them - that we signed in with have been replaced with 1 account - I believe to be the Microsoft account (different name and password).
When we sign in with that MS account and get in to the computer, we have a pop up box that says "Critical Error - Start Menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try ti fix it the next time you sign in." We can't do anything but select the pop-up box option of "sign out now". When we sign in again, it is the same thing.
I'm not sure if this is 1 problem or 2 different ones.
1. How do I get back my initial local user accounts, so I can access all of my programs and files?
2. How do I fix the Critical error?

I've been using Windows 10 for weeks. Until today, it started up just fine by displaying my name and no email address. This is exactly how I want it to be.
Today when Win 10 would not recognize a printer, in order to download an "app" to work with this, I was required to provide a Microsoft email account, which I did (an old Hotmail account I rarely use). Now when I restart or wake up the computer, that old Hotmail account appears as "Administrator". However, I do NOT want that old Hotmail email address associated with this computer.
How can I remove it and get back to logging in with NO associated email address?
NOTE: I do not want to delete the old Hotmail account; just want to remove it from my Windows 10 "Account" menu (My name + Hotmail address + "Administrator").
In case it's required to associate Win 10 with an email address, I use Windows Live Essentials with a company email address. I tried adding it via the "Other Account" option, but Win 10 said it did not recognize the email address I entered, sigh.

When one of my family members goes to sign in, it says "preparing windows." Then, once they are logged in, it says "You've been signed in with a temporary profile. You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later." The problem is still persisting a day later. Aif I turned off sync settings, would that prevent this from happening?

I have multiple users on my laptop running Windows 10 Pro and when I boot it up the first screen shows me a list of those users in the lower left corner, in addition, when I am logged in I can select the start button and at the top click on my name and see a list of users allowing me to log out and log someone else in.
On my desktop running Windows s10 Pro (same versions) these are not showing either at startup or after logging in. Both devices have the same three users and both devices user settings seem to be the same.
How to get the desktop to list the users on the first screen and how to get them listed once someone is logged in? I want the laptop and the desktop to display the same information.

With one small decision, Microsoft has made me decide to revert back to 7.
What is that decision? The decision, a staggeringly incompetent one, is to automatically login the previous user on a multi-user system that has no passwords.
Yes - with W10, if you have multiple users with no passwords set, the previous user is automatically logged in at startup.
Who could possibly think that behaviour is ever desirable? It's an absolute howler.
My family and I all use the same computer. We've never needed or wanted passwords - we just want our own desktops, shortcuts etc.
It seems the only way to prevent an automatic login is to make everybody have, and enter, a password. There's no way around that, apparently. Until then, I'm reverting to W7.

I'm running Widows 10 on my MacBook via Parallels Desktop. When the W10 login screen appears, I get my user name appear and it logs itself in but is declined. Next, my user name is displayed twice and I click the top one and enter my PIN number and I'm logged in. I would like to delete the second user name display.
