I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Since the upgrade I have noticed the following:
When my computer comes alive from screen saver mode, sometimes though not always all the icons are missing. The task bar is there but clicking on any item there does nothing. It's like everything just seizes up.
I'm currently running Build 10130. For some reason, when I view "All Apps" I have folders for my desktop apps, but nearly all of the icons for the apps themselves are missing.
I have tried the following solutions & none have fixed the problem:
SFC /scannow
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I've run both of those alternatively 3X in a row - based on another thread)
Deleted the icon cache in my user folder
Run the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Update
Created a new local account & logged in.
Enabled the Administrator account & logged in.
Did a repair install of Build 10130
When I navigate to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I can see everything and it's all just fine. For some reason the icons simple refuse to appear on the start screen.
I've checked the permissions on those folders and they appear to be fine.
I've tried right clicking on a program and selecting "pin to start" and nothing happens.
I've checked C:UsersmynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms as well and it seems to be fine, but still nothing changes.
How is Windows 10 creating the Start screen icons? Is there a way to force it to rebuild everything?
My computer has hidden or lost the start up button.. The icon is missing from my start up screen.. I haven't the ability to use the f keys either they produce nothing.. All of the things I previously installed as also absent.. My windows computer four window icon produces nothing as well , having to manually shut it off..
View 1 RepliesRecently my mouse pointer has been disappearing when the system wakes in Windows 10 Pro. I can still see it highlighting when moving the mouse and the dialog open with a right click. It only comes back if I open the Task Manager or a separate window. Strangely if I manually put the computer to sleep through the power menu this issue does not seem to appear, it only shows when the computer sleeps after the allotted time.
Not sure if this is an issue with Nvidia Drivers or a Windows Update.

After I started exploring I noticed that the text in what I call buttons disappears when the mouse moves over it. For example:After pressing the left mouse button on the start prompt when I move the mouse up to high lite all apps or power or settings the text in the button disappears. The button still functions normally. I also have noted that buttons imbedded in some email do not show at all.

Graphics adapter uses Intel G41 chip set
My taskbar is missing and my icons on the desktop are missing as well the background is dark ....

View 9 RepliesUpon start up of my PC it loads up then the screen goes blank, like its in sleep mode, no mouse nothing, if I turn the monitor on and off, the screen appears for a second or two then disappears again.
I tried restarting in safe to check drivers but it does exactly the same thing here. In safe mode however, under monitors Generic PNP Monitor has the Yellow Exclamation mark indicating an issue. I have tried uninstalling this and also my graphics drivers and it seemed to work for the first time. Next day I turned on my PC again and the same thing is happening. I have to constantly turn on and off my monitor so I can navigate to the relevant areas to uninstall drivers etc.
I have tried a Google search but everything I have read has said something about having a mouse pointer on a blank screen but I do not even have that.
My graphics are built in, not a separate card which the driver for this is labelled Intel HD(R) Graphics. Unfortunately I do not have access to another monitor to check to see if the monitor is faulty. Just to add, this just started randomly before a fresh Windows 10 install.
My computer went to a black screen again after installation, but after waiting for a while my computer fell asleep and I went to wake it up and the black screen was gone. I still get the black screen after I restart, but I just press the power button on my laptop, put it to sleep and then I press some button (any) and it's fine.

View 24 RepliesW10 (64 bit Home) has been working OK on this laptop but recently I have been able to open the settings screen for only a micro-second. Having found people having the same problem I have tried running SFC several times, as suggested, but it says it found an issue it could not resolve.
Again following instructions on the forum I tried running DISM with an iso loaded and this hung at 40% for hours (overnight).
I do not understand what to look for in the log file, but there are several lines that mention an error. I attach the log file (zipped)....
After successfully installing Win 10 it ran without any issues for about 1 day then Edge refused to launch, the splash screen opens for about 10 seconds and then disappears. The only change made to Edge was to import bookmarks from IE. Unsure where to start looking for an answer.

View 3 RepliesThe Windows store won't open and I'm not sure what to do when i click on it, the splash screen pops up for half a second then disappears as if I never opened it, however it used to work. I've tried running commands in the powershell, scanned my computer, cleared the cache, and when I used the store troubleshooter it said that I needed a microsoft account, although I had signed into my computer (and the store before).

View 8 RepliesWhen rebooted this issue does not happen. After some time, if I open the hidden systray menu, most of them will disappear as I mouse over them. I do not know if it is triggered by opening a program, a background program, time, or whatever.
View 4 RepliesI have Windows 10 Home and all of my icons have disappeared. I mean not only my desktop ones all of them I will include some screenshots. This happened when I used the Winfix option in the Systemcare 9 Pro app. It told me the I have something wrong with sticky notes, so I just clicked fix then all of my icons just disappeared, and it said the problem was fixed. I have tried running every troubleshooting method in the windows OS and I everything says everything is all fine.
My personal theory is that either there is a setting for this that I can change back or that I have a problem in the registry (I do not back it up frequently sadly so I cannot load a backup) or the problem lies in a corrupted file (I have used sfc /scannow and it says nothing is wrong). I also am unable to access the properties option (Whenever I right click the menu comes up but when I click properties it won't open).
Recently I have had the issue where some icons go missing. In the image below, its the mute icon however it appears elsewhere. May be related or not but my skype has suddendly stop showing special characters too.I have tried "Reset default fonts".

View 9 RepliesAccording to all I have read there should be a Properties Icon shown when you right click a blank area of the Taskbar in W10. There should also be a Task View icon to the right of the Start icon. I have neither of these. If I right click the Taskbar (blank area) I get 4 options: 1. Show app icons. 2. Show all notification icons. 3. Show touch keyboard button. 4. Show language switcher. That's it but no Properties.
View 6 RepliesI have had a problem on Windows 10. My icons for various applications (non stock) have gone missing. Many apps and games like Cities Skylines, Steam, Simcity have gone missing. They all have changed to either a globe or a blank paper icon. It has become very frustrating as I am used to looking at the icon and not actually reading the name. I have tried moving the apps from my HDD to an SSD and, nothing.
View 1 RepliesAfter the 12Jan2016 Windows 10 Home updates some taskbar icons became unresponsive to a left click of the mouse. Examples are the leftmost for access to all applications, the right most to access the calendar, the next most rightmost to access notifications. Right click of the mouse on the icons works as expected.
View 3 RepliesNever seen this before in other OS, just noticed when i hook up my external WD Ultra Passport no icon shows in Devices and Printers just square white icon, same happens in notification area under Safely Remove. Also in Devices and Printers my Epson Printer no longer shows as a Printer Icon but a Folder icon with name of the printer. Maybe with printer it is driver or software related to Windows 10, but both of these devices never had this happen in Windows 8.1.
Both devices work properly and is seen in Device manager correctly.
No app icons will appear on the taskbar. They show fine in the Start menu, but are missing on the taskbar. It only includes apps, no installed programs are having this issue. This includes calculator, Edge, Xbox, etc. I tried rebuilding the icon cache from this tutorial, but it still didn't work. I've included a screenshot for reference.

I didn't have this subkey in the registry, so I couldn't delete it.Icon Cache - Rebuild in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums This did not do anything either.
Just got this error and couldn't find anything like this solved. The icons (or maybe the apps) are missing from the start menu.
