View 1 RepliesI have an old computer with a bad motherboard that I am thinking about taking the hdd out of and reinstalling it in a new computer and duel booting between win7 and win10, my question is "can it be done"?
View 2 RepliesIf I remember correctly, Windows 10 Product Key (or license) is based on a hardware ID of some sort. If I have a working Windows 10 on a HDD (or SSD), and I'm ready to junk that computer and want to move that "licensed" version of Windows 10 and the HDD to a new machine, how does Microsoft deal with the hardware ID since the ID is based on the old hardware and not the new?
View 8 RepliesI have an SSD with a Windows 10 installation on it. This Windows 10 is and upgrade from Windows 8.1 which was an upgrade from Windows 8. I still have the Windows 8 key and installation media. What I'm doing is building a new computer, but my hard drive is still new, so I want to keep it. When I put it in the new system I plan on doing a refresh or clean install, so that everything is nice and clean.
But, I don't have a product key for Windows 10. Is my only option to use my Windows 8 CD then upgrade to 10? Is there a way to retain my 10 installation then reset it? This one hurts my brain. What I think would be best is right before I move the hard drive is do the reset, then move it to the new computer, but then I don't know how windows will active since I can't use the 8 key and it can't do a internet activation based on hardware because all the hardware is new.
How do I copy Win10 Edge Favorites to different computer also running Win10 Edge?
View 1 RepliesDesktop Icons move back to the left (default) side of the screen after customizing. this happens when the the computer is put into sleep mode and is woken up or when the monitor is turned off and turned back on. I upgraded to windows 10 Pro 64bit from windows 7 ultimate 64bit. This problem never happened with windows 7.
-Automatic Sleep mode is turned off - when I manually put computer to sleep mode and wake it up the icons are rearranged
-Automatic turn off monitor has been deactivated - when shut off my monitor but keep my computer on and then turn back on the monitor the icons have rearranged
-I have small icons setting
-Auto align icons has been deactivated
-allow themes to change icons has also been deactivated
My Computer:
LG 34UM65 - 21x9 - 2560x1080p resolution
AMD 9590
Asus Crosshair V Formula Z
Gigabyte HD7970ghz
Corsair Platinum Ram
WD HDD
Samsung 850Pro - Windows 10 is installed on the SSD
My Drivers are all up to date. and Motherboard Bios has just been updated to 2201
I have lost all my Favorites in Edge. I have recovered a copy of the desired Favorites and have placed these favorites on my desktop as a file folder. The file structure has all the folders, and within each folder, the links to all the favorite websites. I have tried placing the contents of this file into the following location:
C:UsersAdminAppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbweACMicrosoftEdgeUserDe fault
I understand that this is the default location for Edge Favorites. With the desired "Favorites" folder placed and verified in the above location and I open Edge and click on Favorites and all I see under Favorites are two folders "Favorites Bar" and "BookmarksBar" (as expected both currently empty). I had hoped to see also an expandable "Favorites" folder with all the subfolders. How to use the previous referenced Desktop file folder or its content to restore my Favorites in Edge.
After activation, the IE Favorites + Bar didn't install from Windows 8.1. I attempted to install using The Hub but it came back with 'Couldn't import favorites' from IE. I managed a manual install using cut and paste from the legacy IE file to the Favourites file in Win 10. This was successful for both Favorites and Favorites Bar, but it only lasted until the the machine was rebooted. The Favorites/Bar were once again missing from Win 10.
View 1 RepliesI installed Windows 7 onto my laptop , I then did a free upgrade to Windows 10. I would now like to move this installation to a new PC that I am buying. Can I do this for free? I no longer want the installation on my laptop.
View 1 RepliesMy wife want to move some pics from one of our pc,s to another in another room in house to print.Pics are in another room on laptop which is Windows 10.She wants to move them from there to main pc which is Windows 7.I know nothing about how to do this, and there one pic in there she needs to send to someone.
View 2 RepliesOkay so I'm going to be building a new PC, but I'm reusing my old motherboard and my old hard drive with Windows 10 on it. I'm going to have a second new hard drive, a new processor, and a new GPU. I'm just wondering if my PC will be able to boot into Windows fine or if I'll have to go through any hoops? Or if I'll run into any trouble with a new graphics card and processor with the old drivers still on the hard drive?
View 1 RepliesI'm running Windows 10 Professional, and have a triple monitor setup. I have two 22" Dell monitors side by side, and I have my 55" Vizio TV mounted on the wall above my monitors. The Dell monitors are connected to my video card via VGA/DVI connections, and the TV is connected via HDMI.
Well, the annoying problem I'm having is that Windows 10 will randomly move my opened windows between monitors, but only when I'm not using the computer. For example, the Dell monitor on the right is my "main" display, where I usually keep my windows open (Chrome, uTorrent, etc.). If I turn off my monitor, later when I come back, I'll find the windows I left open on my left monitor, so I end up having to drag them back over. Another example is when I used Plex Home Theater. I run that program on my Vizio TV at all times. But if I don't close the program before I turn the TV off, it ends up getting moved to my Dell monitor on the left. Also, when I have my TV turned off, and I turn it on, it blacks out both of my Dell monitors for maybe 5 seconds, and during that time it moves whatever windows I had open on my right Dell monitor over to the left one.
I had Windows 8 and Windows 7 on this PC previously, and I never had any of these issues. I have the most current video drivers installed
Right, I've now got Solitaire but I would like to move it to what I think may be called the "Task Bar". I got as far as unlocking the task bar and attempted to drag Solitaire to it but it didn't work.
View 8 RepliesI like to reposition a few desktop app icons away from their default position on the left edge of the screen so I can find them easier. It seems that every few days, they all get re-positioned back to the left side like my desktop was reset. I'm not sure what's causing it.
View 3 RepliesAfter an update and at other times I find when I boot up the tiles in the start menu have moved to a different position from where I had set them. I try to keep the tiles for those programmes and folders I use most at the top for easy access.
Is there a way of stopping windows 10 from re-arranging them into a different order?
Is it possible to move a tile to the taskbar or the start menu.
View 1 RepliesI can't press any of the buttons in the lower line, cant navigate in Windows, or in the apps window. the cursor is showing and moving but i cant press anything. ive tried reinstalling Windows but it makes an error saying that some system file is missing.
View 9 RepliesWhen I am doing something that is moving on the screen, including moving the mouse, having a loading bar move or a blinking cursor, my screen is fine. However, once nothing on the screen is moving for about 2-3 seconds, the screen becomes corrupted and a graphical mush. Once I move something again, like my mouse, the screen goes black for a second then returns to normal, as if nothing has happened. The display will not update itself out of this issue if a key is pressed on the keyboard, unless that prompts another screen, like ctrl+alt+delete.
View 2 RepliesI've searched but might have missed it !!.. I want to arrange my icons around on my windows 10 screen..
View 1 RepliesI cannot find a way to move photos from one of the automatically created albums to another existing album. There seems to be no way to tag them as there was in previous versions. Many of my photos are old family pictures scanned over a period of years. Being automatically placed in albums according to date makes finding them very difficult.
View 1 RepliesI am in the process of moving from Europe to Canada and because of the ridiculous cost of shipping a PC across the ocean I will only move some parts (leaving mobo, case, power supply). I thought I could carelessly put my old hard drive in a new mobo but after some research it's apparently not so simple.
Any way to escape buying windows again (and maybe even a new hard drive).
Relevant information?
current HDD: (1tb 7200rpm... seagate possibly?)
cpu: i7 4770
gpu: gtx 770 (2gb evga)
ram: (currently 2x4gb, will add two more 4gb)
possible new mobo: Asus Z87-Pro ATX LGA1150
possible new SSD: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
how I can set Windows 10 up, so moved files will inherit the permissions from the destination folder?
I enabled the inheritance option on the parent folder and that works when copying files, but not when moving files.
In previous versions of Windows I could resolve this issue, by adding MoveSecurityAttributes in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer (as described in the article below), but this does not seem to have any effect in Windows 10.

Why I do this is unimportant. In Win 7, when I move my daily backup files (2 weeks worth about 20gb) from my current BU folder to my save BU folder, the move took a couple of seconds (I think because only the file pointers were changed.) Under Win 10, it takes in excess of 2 hours (I think there is a physical move of file data.) This is my third try since installing Win 10 on my (admittedly slow) server. Will renaming the files work?
View 13 RepliesAny way to move groups of START button icons? I want to organize my app layout; however, moving around 1 application as a time is becoming quite time consuming.
View 3 RepliesI am moving my documents, videos, etc. folders to another internal HD. I have two issues:
1. When I right-click on the folder, properties, location, and try to change back to default, it gives me a "access is denied error message".
2. When I try to change the folder to a new folder on the HD, it tells me that "the specified path is invalid".
I was wondering if it was possible to copy the Windows 10 OS to another hard drive and still be able to use the old one. I have an old laptop, mainly used for videos and internet use, and I would still like to be able to have it for mobility purposes. I'm in the process of building a gaming PC, so of course, I'll need an OS for that as well.
