Need To Run Chkdisk On A System Drive

Jan 8, 2016

I need to run chkdsk on a laptop's system drive and am aware that this isn't possible without a re-boot. Problem is, the laptop I'm wanting to run it on has some BDOD issues (driver_irql_not_less_or_equal symnets.sys) and I can only boot into safe mode. Will this affect chkdsk running?

Performance :: Previous Versions Does Not Work On System Drive But Second Drive

Jan 8, 2016

I have two physical disks in my notebook, one simple partition each, BitLocker encrypted. Drive C:, which is my system drive and drive D:, for some media stuff.Windows Version is Windows 10.0.10586 x64.I have configured VSS to use the "Previous Versions" feature in case I accidentally delete or overwrite a file. I did this on my Win7 install to and it saved my butt at least three times.

VSS is running (Volume Shadow Copy Service set to "Manual"), snapshots are there but when I right-click on a modified file (or on the root of the disk) and click "Previous Versions", my D: drive correctly displays the existing snapshots, on my system drive C: there is always a "There are no previous versions available" message. But, when I click the "System Restore..." button, I get a list with my snapshots, so I guess I could restore my system.

configuration seems to be ok and the two manual snapshots are there on both drives. For the moment there is no system restore point, but it does not work with snaps created by them either.

EFI System Partition - C Drive

Sep 7, 2015

I have a fat32 100mb system partition in my windows disk management it's also showing in aomei partition assistant file system fat32, capacity 100mb, used space 28.75 mb free space 71.25 mb flag is gpt,efi status is system. Installed windows 10 from a usb flash drive and I could not convert from efi to gpt or something like that so I deleted the windows partition which is my c drive (ssd) and that's when I got this showing up in windows.

Can I copy the boot files to the c drive and just deleted this system partition and use the partition software to merge the space back to the c drive so I can use it. Or do I have to reformat and start all over again? I deleted the c drive partition that windows was on and created a new one and it created reserved space and recovery space which I have got ride of and deleted and merged the unallocated space for both back to the c drive.

I hesitate about doing anything with this partition until I'm sure of what I'm doing so that My computer will still boot up. I can only boot into windows 10 from the windows boot manager and not straight from the cdrive the primary (SSD).

Deleting A Folder On The System Drive

Aug 25, 2015

A file named customrefresh.wim remains on my C: drive. 9 Gb big. I believe it is a leftover from windows 8.1. I suspect the folder was created by windows 8.1 in connection with creating a USB recovery drive for the 8.1 system. I should have erased it then, but forgot. Can I do it now?

Antivirus :: How To Use Bitlocker On Only Non System Drive And Without TPM

Nov 11, 2015

I want to use Bitlocker on my Non System E Drive without TPM. I read somewhere to do the following for without TPM:

" Under Local Computer Policy navigate to Computer Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Bit Locker Drive Encryption Operating System Drives and double click on Require additional authentication at startup." and so on.

but I am confused because the above note is mentioning "Operating System Drives " wherein I want to turn on Bitlocker on Non System Drive.

Can we turn bitlocker "on" on Non System Drives without turning it "on" on System Drives and Can we turn it "on" on a Single Folder instead of Drive.

System Image Backup To USB Drive?

Apr 1, 2016

I recently purchased a Lenovo 900 ultrabook, and proceeded to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro (using a Windows 7 Ultimate product key). Now that I have done this the factory "restore" does not include my upgrade and I am concerned that I would lose it if I ever needed to restore.

So, I am trying to do a full system image backup to a flash drive, but Windows 10 says that the drive is not allowed for this. I can create the USB drive as a network share and get the backup to work using that method, but I don't really trust that it will work properly.

How to do a full system image backup to a USB drive in Windows 10 that you trust will work in the case a restore is needed?

Low Disk Space System Backup Drive

I am getting a low disk space message from my system backup drive. It's 1 TB and it is full. There are not any files that I can delete. They are all system files.

Two questions:

1. Why is it so large?
2. Can I install a new larger drive and have it move the system files there?

System Reserve Partition On Wrong Drive

Dec 17, 2015

I just installed a Samsung Evo 850 SSD and then installed Windows 10 to it. I was previously duel booting Win10 and Win7 as I didn't want to fully commit to Win10 until I had some time with it. I decided I like it enough to have it as my sole OS so when I got my new SSD I've formatted the two old drives containing Win10 and Win7 and just did a clean install of Win10 on the new SSD.

After the installation I wanted to join the two old drives together using storage space because I have also ordered a 4TB HDD and wanted to consolidate my other ones into one drive. It was when i did this I noticed that the system reserve folder was still on the old drive and no matter what I do I can't deactivate it or delete the partition.

So how to remove the partition from that drive.

Performance :: System Image To Thumb Drive Not Working

Dec 1, 2015

So overall, I was having a issue with creating a system image. It would state that "The specified backup storage location has the shadow copy storage on another volume (0x80780038)"

After reading several forums I found that if you delete the restore points you are able to create a system image.

During my troubleshooting, I was attempting to backup to a 64GBthumb drive (this worked in win8 and win7)..

As I was trying to use the thumb drive, I ran into the following issue..

First it says it needs to be formatted to NTFS. Once I format it to NTFS, it says "The drive is not a valid backup location"

Images I found - [URL] ....

I do not want to use any 3rd party software to accomplish this.

Performance :: Can't Find System Image On Recovery Drive

Oct 18, 2015

One of the 1st things I do with a new PC is create & test a recovery drive. This is the 3rd Windows 10 PC I've worked on-all Toshiba Satellites by coincidence. This one seems to have a problem, possibly creating the recovery drive and if not that then certainly using it. Or else I've forgotten how I used it on the other two. I test it by doing a restore from system image-since I create it immediately after completing setup I haven't lost anything and this assures me that if nothing else I can get back to 'ground zero'.

This is the 3rd time I've tried this on the new PC. The first time it said it was unable to create the recovery drive. I checked the USB stick & tried again. That time is 'successfully' created the drive. Both times 'copy system image to recovery drive' was checked. When I tested the 'successfully' created drive it couldn't find a system image on it.

So I'm trying it again and it's just sitting on the 'Please Wait' screen-for 20 minutes so far. Presumably it's erasing the drive so I'm reluctant to simply reboot. And this is the last 16GB USB stick I have. Should I shut it down & try again, get another USB stick, or what? Or have I totally forgotten what I did on the previous 2 PC's that worked?

Installation :: Moving System Reserved Partition To A Different Drive

Dec 10, 2015

I currently have one drive that contains a System Reserved partition (which includes the boot files). The status is System, Active, Primary Partition.I have another drive with the C: partition. The status is Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition.I've been told that if I remove the disk (it's a bit flaky) with the System Reserved partition, I won't be able to boot up. If this is true, is it possible to transfer that partition to another drive? If so, does it have to be at the start of the drive? Alternatively, can I make the C: partition include System status?

Antivirus :: Have Bitlocker Prompt For Password On Non-System Drive

Nov 30, 2015

I am running Windows 10 Pro. I am using BitLocker on a non-system drive and not on my system drive. I am not planning on using it on my system drive. I do not have a TPM compatible computer.

Once I log into Windows, I would like to be prompted for the password to unlock my data drive. I did have this running correctly before I started having problems with my computer and had to do a clean install of Windows 10. I have searched for hours but can't find the article that walked me through how to do this.

I found a ton of articles that don't fit my situation because I don't want to auto-unlock, use a USB key or encrypt my system drive.

Accounts :: SYSTEM Owns User Folder On Drive D

Dec 3, 2015

I recently installed Win10 on a C SSD and set a D hard drive for my data. I have assigned default save to be D. FYI, I do have a C:User[name]Documents, Pictures, etc. also.

However, I found that on my drive D, there is a D:[name]Documents, Pictures, etc. So I included the sub folders into the Library. However, the D:[user]Documents folder does exist but I cannot change the permissions at all (Read Only). It is owned by the System.

Don't I need to take ownership back to make use of it? But how? Or do I just leave it alone. Right now, all save documents are going to C:[user]Documents. Other D:[user] sub folders, i.e., Pictures and Videos, are writable.

Drivers/Hardware :: Unable To Merge Or Expand System Drive

Jan 13, 2016

On my laptop I have a 1 TB HDD and on that drive the usable space was formatted into 2 separate partitions. This doesn't work well for me and I would prefer to have just one partition with all of the usable space. So I've tried everything I can think of and for some reason I just can't get the partitions to merge or even delete the secondary partition and expand the one I want to use. I have some pictures below to show what's going on.

This one shows the two partitions that I want merged.

This next one shows that I cannot extend the partition even if the other partition was deleted and is unpartitioned space

This last one shows that even with a 3rd party software I get the same result as EaseUS Partition Master doesn't give me the option to merge or move/re-size the partition

So at this point I'm stumped and I don't understand why this won't work as I've done the same thing with many other computers easily in disk management.

Do not want to use laptop more until I have a system recovery method.
