Any way to switch Windows 10's WiFi network type to Private and make it to stay like that? I can even manage to switch from Public to Private using a small trick, but some time later, it will switch back to Public network!

I have been fighting this problem ever since Windows 7. Every time I try to access my computer from another device on my network, I find I am unable to connect. I go into the Ethernet settings, and see that Make This PC Discoverable is turned off. If I switch it on, go back, and then immediately open the settings again , it is switched off again. When I look at my Network and Sharing Center, my network is set to Public network.
The only way I've been able to successfully set it to Private and keep the Make This PC Discoverable setting turned on is to change the Category setting in the registry for my network to 1. It works, and I'm able to do whatever it was I wanted to do over the network. But then the next time I want to access my PC from my LAN again, same thing.I have tried all the suggestions I can find, most of which are mentioned here: Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8.Nothing prevents it from going back to Public again after a while.This is incredibly frustrating as it completely defeats the purpose of having a local area network!
Is there a way I can change all connected networks to private instead of public with a click-able script? The problem was that a User was connected to an open network using a VPN which then also connected showing Public. With both as Public, they could not map to a network resource. I fixed it using the "go to home-groups and change network settings, etc." But surely there is a way it could be handled with a simple script to edit same? End result was the VPN showed private while the open WiFi he connected to still showed public but he could access the server now.
View 1 RepliesI have a Windows 10 PC, with one of it's functions being that of a file server/NAS for my home network. I set it up with password protected sharing and a user account/password that everyone knows and uses to access it. I didn't really have any reason to use password protected sharing at the time, but it was the default so I left it.
Now I have a couple of network streaming devices that can't handle password protected sharing, so I was considering turning it off. Is there any reason not to turn off password protected sharing on a private network? Obviously I don't mind everyone on the network having access, but I was wondering if it had any other potential security benefits that I haven't thought of.
First I wanted to boot into Safe mode, but couldn't do that because the keyboard was not working in BIOS. To solve that I just removed the battery and left it out for around 10/15 minutes so that any residual power would be dissipated.
Once I managed to get into Safe mode I made some changes to my user account and added myself to the Aminstrators group. Then rebooted back into normal mode , where I could make changes and click on the YES button.
Finally onto the network problem of being stuck on a Public network. Now that I could open the properties box of the ethernet adapter , I saw that the 'Obtain the following IP address option was selected, but there was no IP address there. Once I changed that to 'Select automatically' solved the Public network problem as it was change back to Private Network automatically.
Trying to set up a network for the first time. My intention was to share public folders but when I right click on my user folders (e.g. PCUsersDaveDocuments they are shown as "Shared" and clicking on "Stop sharing" doesn't seem to do anything. Am I missing something.
View 3 RepliesThe laptop that I use a PIN to log on clearly has on the login screen under the PIN area the option to change to other types of login credentials (i.e., MSID, Local Account), but on another laptop where I changed over to Windows Logon I do not have any such option displayed, nor can I find it in Settings:Accounts:Sign-in Options (though it DOES have there the option to change the PIN and other credential particulars).
View 5 RepliesSince my daughter (2 years old) switched on airplane mode last week, I'm no more able to switch it off and go back to wifi connection.
No more WiFi / airplane mode icons in wifi window on the taskbar, no more airplane mode option on network settings...
Everything disappeared, apart from the airplane mode icon in the right corner of the screen, which I can not switch to WiFi mode...
I am having a problem whereby my default browser keeps changing from IE11 back to either Edge or blank. Why this might be happening or what program is causing it to change? I thought it maybe the Windows Auto Update that keep changing but am now not so sure of that since the last recorded update is back on 14th January and my default Browser got changed again last evening.
The only other programs that run regularly are Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities. However, I have been through the settings of both of those programs and cannot detect anything that would indicate that they change the default Browser.
Also, in IE11 under the advanced tab I have ticked the option the "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser" and yet (a) I do not get a notification and (b) the default browser keeps getting changed.
When I wish to view my pictures, some stay up while others will only stay up for about 5 or 6 seconds.
I was advised to change the settings in the defaulting pictures properties; but they are all the same settings for those that stay open and those that don’t.
I have win7 and am going to install win10 from usb. I currently have my OS on my SDD and all my docs,prog files,ect on HDD. Ive read a clean install is best for win10.
My question is, can I delete all the SDD OS partitions during install, select install on the SDD while leaving my HDD completely intact? If so, what option would I select to get to the formatting partition screen without it automatically erasing my HDD files?
Having issues with certain icons not staying at the bottom when I put them there. It all started after a windows 10 update some time ago. One day I fired up my laptop and noticed that some of my icons that I had at the bottom of the screen moved up. Tried to move them back and they went right back to the next row above. Did some searching and found suggestion moving the text size smaller and that worked, but now all of my icons are tiny.
View 2 RepliesI have a laptop and use an external wireless mouse.With Windows 7 and 8 I had the mouse device settings set to "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached" checked. I would turn on the laptop, get to my desktop and receive a notification that the internal device was disabled.
Since upgrading to Windows 10, I have noticed that disabling the internal device does not stick. Every time I turn on the laptop, I have to go to Mouse/Device Settings and check that box. Yes, I do click Apply when I check it and it does disable it. At least it does until I turn on the laptop the next time. How to get the setting to stick so I don't have keep checking that box?
When I got to start --> settings --> windows update, it just stays on a white loading screen. It never shows anything and just keeps the loading thingy.. I made a screenie:
So I can't see if there are any updates. This has been like this the last 3/4 weeks I think. it used to work just fine. And is there any way I can check if the latest updates/build is installed?
I want to know do they stay intact or does it create like a windows.old folder with your file pushed there? I need to know this before i upgrade...

I think MS has been doing this for awhile, but I want to make sure that any solution works for Windows 10: Any administrator account can muscle into another user's folders. It doesn't matter that the folder isn't shared, or how many times you manually remove the shared access, because the only barrier to entry is a pointless warning prompt. The only thing you can do really AFAIK is manually deny permissions for specific accounts in the security tab of a folder's properties.
But there's nothing stopping an administrator account from making another account that hasn't been blacklisted. And you can't deny the Administrator group unless you want to be locked out of your own folders, since the group denial will trump your user access. Hope I'm missing something here....
Windows 10 still retains the list of sites visited even when "in private browsing" is used. Why?

After win10 install, I finally found list of installed programs, and shows ad aware anti virus and private firewall both installed, but not finding them on task bar (or whatever its now called in lower right) tho ad aware Web Companion shows. how to see if they are actually working & maybe show an icon somewhere?
View 3 RepliesWhen I was running Windows 8.1 I had moved my Public folders from C drive to D Drive (My C drive is an SSD and want to keep it for OS not Data) - After upgrading to Windows 10, Public folders have reverted back to C drive. I can see an option to move them if I right click the folder in File Manager, but event though the path text box is enabled (i.e. I can select the text) I cannot edit it. I have tried running file manager in administrator mode but it makes no difference
