View 8 RepliesI have a custom hosts file which has a lot of entries redirecting back to 127.0.0.1 (this is normal). One of my DNS servers is being updated, so I added a new entry to the hosts so I could get to my sites. This worked fine.
After about 30 minutes I noticed I'd lost access to my site and when I checked my hosts file it's reverted back to how it was first thing this morning. All of my custom entries are there apart from the one for my server.
So something is monitoring and resetting it.. I've ZoneAlarm firewall and anti virus, avast anti virus and super anti spyware installed. I'm assuming it's one of them, but I'd like to be sure.
Is there any way to monitor the hosts file and see who/what is changing it ?
I can set an alias in the hosts file on a win7 machine and access it just fine but doing the same in Win10 prompts for creds that never work even when entered correctly. What did win10 change?
hosts file entry:
127.0.0.1 hostname alias
ip - works fine
hostname -works fine
alias - Prompts for creds and creds don't work
I have gone to the extent of fully disabling UAC from reg, same outcome. Network and file sharing is set to password access and not homegroup. Simple file sharing is off.
Something to note. I always disable ipv6 form the adapter but when I ping my hostname it shows the ipv6 loopback. Why is that? When I ping the alias it returns 127.0.0.1 ipv4 loopback that was entered in the hostname.
The other day, I was trying to fix Windows Default Apps not working by adding "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" to the following directories as indicated here: [URL]
However, it seems to have messed up the permissions as what I did was take ownership and then added both myself and "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES".
My question is, how do I reset the permissions of the following folders and their sub folders and sub files to the defaults:
C:Program Files
C:Windows
C:Users
Does this command below do it?
icacls * /T /Q /C /RESET
My other question is will it fix the folders to the default inheritance if I enabled inheritance to child folders/files for a folder that was by default disabled or if I disabled inheritance to the child folders/files for a folder that is by default enabled?
Other than the above, Am I correct that I will have to manually change the permission for each users folder under C:Users so they own and have full control of that folder.
Since using XP and then Windows 7 have always set the Hosts file to read only as a security measure. Is it still advisable to do this on Windows 10?
View 4 RepliesI have changed from W7 to W10 but find that although I am logged in as the administrator, I am unable to save any changes to my hosts file and get the message that I don't have accees/permission and should contact the administrator.
View 5 RepliesI am trying to add some information to hosts file in windows 10 but unable to save the changes - it is prompting access denied message. suggest the way to edit and save hosts file.
View 1 RepliesMy hosts file grew to 900mb because of a n00b programming mistake. This caused the internet to be unusable. When I try to edit/delete it, it says Cryptographic Services is using it.
View 11 RepliesI am trying to block all porn sites on the laptop that I let kids play on. I tried using the hosts file to block them, I found a huge list of porn sites to block. But when I tried to load other sites like Facebook, YouTube, etc. It will take forever to load as I believe it is checking the whole list of sites.
Now what am wondering is there anyway of doing it and not have any difference with the speed of any other website? Because youtube should just come up with no issues. But with all those sites in the host file it takes forever.
Windows 10 (by the way)
So I upgraded to windows 10 but I wanted a clean install of it so i figured a factory reset would do it thinking it would have windows 10. But that was stupid now I have windows 8.1 with no windows 10 icon so my question is will the icon come back so I can upgrade back to windows 10 or am I stuck with the older version?
View 5 RepliesI'm currently running a MSI Leopard, laptop.
I have this one issue. I set up Chrome as my default browser for example, or VLC as my default player for .avi, .mp4, .mkv or else.
But as soon as I will have rebooted the laptop, these settings are reset. Edge for web pages, Windows Media Player for videos etc ...
Is there a way to reset the Start Screen to default without resetting the phone?
View 1 RepliesI can't use EDGE as my default browser as I have a few media servers and as has been pointed out that as EDGE is a universal app addresses like 127.0.0.1:8000 (i.e localhost type stuff) are no longer addressable. I need these types of addresses to use the web interface control settings on various of my media servers so I want to reset IE as the default app.
View 4 RepliesIs there anyway to reset the permissions back to Account Unknown() for the WindowsApps folder? I wanted to have a look in it, I changed the ownership to myself and now I just want to reset it back to the default. The default was Account Unknown(sequence of some kind), but you can't just set it back.
View 2 RepliesAfter resetting UEFI to default values, I can't start WIndows because boot goes to UEFI.
I wanted to make a clean install of W10 and for that I had to make some changes in UEFI because it wouldn't allow me otherwise. But after the installation I see that I have some problems with the sleep and fast boot, not working well. So I went to UEFI and reset it to default, saved and exit. On boot, it goes to UEFI once and again. Windows doesn't load.
So I have to do the same changes that I had to do for installing W10. Disable fast boot, etc. And then yes, I get to Windows, but keep having the same sleep and boot problems. Both work really bad in different ways.
I also did other changes, by the way. I couldn't install W10 because it said that my disk was GPT partition style, so I had to follow some instructions to change that, which wiped my disk and partitions completely and maybe I missed some step...

View 1 RepliesSo two things; when I restart my computer my saved and in-use cursor always resets back to the default cursor pack that comes with the system. I had this issue in Windows 8.1 too, but now it's getting on my nerves because I've got to go to the cursor customization panel every time I turn my computer back on for 2 reasons.
The second reason is not one I had in any previous versions. On my laptop touch pad, I always use the invisible scroll bar option on the edge, which you can turn on through the Synaptics settings, which is now found in the same panel I use to change my cursor back.
Is there any way to make these two settings default so I don't have to redo them every single time I turn my computer on?
For the cursors, I download/make individual cursors and customized them, saving the general group in a file I call 'custom cursors', I don't download entire packs. I never have to reload the cursor set I'm trying to use, I just have to pull up the panel and click 'ok' to get back out of it, and this updates me to the custom cursors that were already on there, like the system knew I wanted them, but I just sort of had to remind it to activate them. For the Synaptics issue, I never had the problem before the Windows 10 update and I use the scrolling function a LOT.
I have a home built Desk Top Computer and when I turned it on this morning and when it finished booting I had lost a lot of my icons and what was there all moved to the left side of the screen and the wallpaper went back to the Windows 10 Default. Also the Application short cut screen that comes up when you left click on the Windows icon in the bottom left enlarged and took up half my screen. I tried to adjust it by using the mouse and dragging it but that wouldn't work either. About a month or little more ago I had upgraded from Win 7 Home Prem with no problems at all. It has been working fine until this morning. I had to go back to a restore point to correct it. My wife has a Toshiba Laptop that I upgraded about the same time and hers did the same thing except that she didn't loose her Icons or wallpaper they all just moved to the left of the screen.
View 1 RepliesAll of my games look like they are in 3D. I can't fix it and I ran a full scan of my system and it found nothing. BEFORE YOU ASK. I have unplugged it, restarted it, and set my control panel for nvidia back to default. The only thing left is to wipe the OS completely and I don't really want to do that.
View 1 RepliesSo I just turned my computer on and noticed that my desktop had been reset to the default wallpaper and all of my folders had been deleted. I also realised that my documents and pictures had been deleted. I tried to run a game and my save files had been deleted.
I restarted my computer and everything was normal.
Is this an issue computer or just Windows 10 in general?
First, my desktop icons keep reverting back to default positions. I place my shortcuts at custom locations in my desktop and when I refresh, they go back to the left. And whenever I restart my computer, they change back to the default large icon size.
I've searched the web on how to fix this and I haven't been able to find a working solution on this problem.
Then, Edge is now having a problem too. Edge starts just fine but the problem shows up when you type in a website you wanna go to. It will just sit there doing nothing. It's responding but it's just not doing anything... If you click the open new tab (The plus button) nothing happens. When you try to close it, nothing happens too....
I can still browse the web using other browsers (chrome for example) so it must be on Edge's side.I've ran virus scans with ESET and Windows Defender and they haven't found a virus so I'm pretty sure my computer is clean.
