View 9 RepliesI use Notepad++ to edit Python files which have the file extension .py such as "sample.py"
I would like to set Notepad++ as the default program to open .py files.
When I open a .py file I get the popup asking me which file I want to use to open. But I do not get the choice to set the default program to open this extension.
When I go to Settings|Choose Default Apps By File Type the .py extension is not listed.
Looking through the registry I see that there is no .py handler.
Q: What is the method to manually add a file extension and associate it with a program?
I use files with an SCR extension to store text data. For me SCR means script.
I would like it so that when I double-click on this file, that it opens with notepad (or something similar). But this file is registered as a screen saver. And I cannot change the file association.
I have tried "Associate a file type or protocol with a program". I can select NOTEPAD but the "Current application" remains as "Unknown application". And in my folders, the file type remains "Screen saver". So this option does not work.
I have also tried adjusting the registry entry regarding "scr" files. Or removing the registry entry. Neither works. And I also don't get the "right click / open with" option. So how do I change the file association of scr files?
After the recent Windows 10 update my QIF file association launches the incorrect version of Microsoft Money.
Money is an old legacy programme that is still running JUST ...and I need to be able to customise the file association.
If I click on properties on the qif file I am given the INCORRECT option to use ....MoneyCoreFilesmnyimport.exe %1
What it SHOULD say is MoneyCoreFilesmsmoney.exe %1 ...... and no my default MSMONEY option doesn't work either. How/where do I make this change?
When I use the left hand side search and click on results other than 'web', a word document is opened! How do I reset the correct app association for this action/file type.

Looks like another annoyance (don't get me wrong, i'm not a 10 hater ) : when i do "open with" and select a portable app, nothing happens :/ Also if in the portable app i tick options such as "show context menu", this won't take effect. All that worked fine on 7.
I dunno for 8.1 but i guess it's same as 10? Anyways, is there a workaround? Can't live without that! Another thing : the great"types.exe" app that we all use(d) on 7 doesn't work here, is there an alternative or not yet? Perhaps it's just not possible at all to have such....
Since I'm not happy with how the Google Hangouts app has no way of integrating with the TEL url protocol, I've decided to create an application that will automatically copy, format and paste the phone link into Hangouts automatically. However, when I attempt to change the association though the control panel, it seems like Windows 10 no longer allows you to choose applications that aren't on the default list.
I've attempted to manually modify the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClasses el" and "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT el" keys but this has not affected the association in any way, even after multiple restarts.
Is there any other way to do this? I've attempted to look for ways to add the executable to the programs list but I haven't found a solution.
After installing visual basics dlls.. After some minutes my windows Explorer started showing error.. This file does not have a program association with it for performing this action. Please install a program or l, if one is already installed, create an association in the default program control panel.. . This error pop ups whenever i tries to open Explorer directly from Taskbar. ..
View 1 RepliesAt the first after I upgraded my notebook from windows 8 to windows 10, I just realize that 1 of my 3 user account is not exist anymore (the Guest account is not there just after I upgrade it into windows 10). As I tried to make the new Guest account and still didnt work (I dont want to follow such a complex email registration required by windows 10 to make a new user account), I thought to delete my secondary user account. However, I just realize that there is a file that I saved in the Desktop under my secondary user account. Is there a way to restore this desktop file that is saved in my deleted user account?
I have opened C:Users but I cant find the folder with the name of my deleted user account. It's very important yet big file (around 2 GB).
I can set an alias in the hosts file on a win7 machine and access it just fine but doing the same in Win10 prompts for creds that never work even when entered correctly. What did win10 change?
hosts file entry:
127.0.0.1 hostname alias
ip - works fine
hostname -works fine
alias - Prompts for creds and creds don't work
I have gone to the extent of fully disabling UAC from reg, same outcome. Network and file sharing is set to password access and not homegroup. Simple file sharing is off.
Something to note. I always disable ipv6 form the adapter but when I ping my hostname it shows the ipv6 loopback. Why is that? When I ping the alias it returns 127.0.0.1 ipv4 loopback that was entered in the hostname.
Under the Network tab of File Explorer, I can see three entries, one of which is my router (with attached Hard Drive) and two computers, each running Windows 10. When I expand the router entry, I can see my hard drive files. I can also see my Users icons when I expand one of the computer's tabs. However, when I click on the other computer's name to search for users, all I see is a message that "This folder is empty". In fact, the folder is not empty, as there are two users on the computer. How I can get this computer to show users, etc.?
View 6 RepliesI'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.
I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 <<<< won't open web page.
I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.
I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".
Using Win10 Pro x64. I would like to disable windows showing .zip files in explorer as a folder...When you highlight it the contents inside the .zip are shown in the right pane view. I've scoured the net and found ways for Win7(which I did disable .zip folders on my other Win7 machine) and Vista, perhaps 8 too but I don't want to risk trying a method for older versions of windows. Any solution/reg hack or whatever to disable .zip folder?
View 5 RepliesI just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?
I downloaded a *.zip file to This PC > Downloads with an *.asm file in it. How can I read the asm file with Notepad?
View 3 RepliesWhen I edit a .mkv file (rename, delete or copy/move) on one of my partitions, file explorer freezes and I need to restart it with taskmanager.
I haven't encountered any other files that cause the same freeze as this one (yet..).
I already searched on google and tried editing from a webbrowser and the drive is defragmented automatically, so I don't know what to do.
I can't open some of the PDF ffiles on my client's server. an error message come on stating that the ' file name is too long'. I can open other files with short name without any problem. I have tried to copy and paste the file on my desktop so I can rename the file but without success. Also tried to right click on the file and open it with fox-it or MS PDF reader but this did't work either. if tried to rename the file or open it with another software the page goes simply closed and and desktop opened.
View 4 RepliesIn Windows 7 when I open Windows Explorer it comes up with a very simple window that has very basic tabs, Organise, Share With Burn, New Folder. Organise then has a very basic drop down menu.
When I use File Explorer in Windows 10 it comes up with a much more detailed menu that offers four menus, File, Home, Share, View.
Is there any way I can use a window similar to Windows 7? I'm sure it is there somewhere as when you attempt to open a file in an application a window identical to what I want comes up to allow the selection.
I've tried instruction after instruction and cannot delete a file. It's from a programme called Solidworks, and is left in the programme file called 3ds Light.otf.
I've tried deleting in Safe mode
Using deleting/unlocking utlities File Assassin and Unlocker
Disabled protection of C drive
Used Security Task manager
So far nothing is working.
I lost my hibernation capability in my upgrade from Win7 to Win10. So I am trying to get it back.
Couldn't find hiberfil.sys in C: so I looked for instructions on this site and found them. But here's what is happening (cut and paste from the elevated command window):
C:>c:windowssystem32powercfg /h /type full
The hiberfile size has been set to: 6361485312 bytes.
C:>dir h*
Volume in drive C is OS
Volume Serial Number is C696-2CB5
Directory of C:
File Not Found
C:>
My file manager is setup to show hidden files but it also does not show hiberfil.sys in c:
Just to be thorough I also searched the entire C drive for files containing "hib" but could not find hiberfil.sys.
Having migrated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I now find that I cannot search for files. I select "This PC", type "bpextract.dat" in the search box, press enter and nothing happens.
View 9 RepliesI got a message that my HD was full. I emptied my Recycle Bin and for a short while there was plenty of space on the HD, but after a short while, I had the same massage: my HD was full to capacity. I manged to locate the problem. This file had 367 (!!!) Megabytes: c:/Program Files (x86)/ctrlcenter PC Support Agent/Logs/esService_2924.
If I deleted other files, the kilobytes of that file increased the size of the problem file.
I could not delete the file because "it is open in another program". I tried several times, with the same result. This morning as I am writing this, I made another try, the file deleted.
I've ran into these before on previous versions of Windows, usually a file that has too long of a name or so it says but basically is just a corrupted file and I use WinRAR rename the file and delete it. But this file in particular I cannot get rid of. It was originally a jpeg, and when I went to rename it for deletion the file then became a blank file, no extension just a letter I put for the name. The file cannot be found by anything it seems, even the command prompt method of deletion gives me the same message. "Could not find this item. Verify the location." Which is weird because the command prompt does show the file in the directory but gives me that error when I try to delete it.
View 3 RepliesI have the windows 10 ISO file on my hard drive and am trying to copy it do a DVD+R. But I get a message that tells me that the DVD has to be formatted to NTFS. When I try to format I don't have a NTFS option. Isn't there a way to move the iso form my hard drive to the DVD? If not, where can I put the file so I can save it?
View 9 RepliesIn Win 7, one clicked on Start and you could then search for any file in your entire computer by entering its name (or part of it's name) in the file search box. In Win 10, you have to ask Cortana who won't locate a file for you. Where has the file search box covering all data files on the computer moved to?
