No "start" button" and something is always running in the background and I am afraid it is taking all of my information even though I said no. I do not want Cortana and it keeps trying to make me go there. How do I stop this? Do we HAVE to have 10?? Is 7 going to be like XP and not be supported? As I xannot gegt to "all programs", cannot delete anything.

View 1 RepliesI just did a clean install on W10 and change my bios to UEFI (which it supports.) I'm having this intermittent problem with the Windows "Start" Button in the lower left. It just stops working - left clicking doesn't do anything, although right-clicking does. I just have the basics installed now.
Also, my Windows "Start" key on my keyboard stops working as well. I checked on a keyboard checker and the key itself is fine. I have to log out/back in to get it to work again.
My windows 10 button, cortana, and google chrome won't work. The image for Microsoft edge and the windows store on the taskbar are black now and also won't open. I tried using the scan in powershell and it said that it couldn't find any problems. Also I believe my Nvidia drivers need updates but they also won't open it says it had to close. I already used malwarebytes to check for malware. I'm not sure what to do its been working for the whole time I have had windows ten which has been a decent amount of time but it just yesterday started this.

I have a problem with Cortana not opening after pressing the mic button on the taskbar and "Hey Cortana" does not work also. This is a clean install of windows 10 on a Lenovo laptop, I had no problems with Cortana before.
View 9 RepliesSoon after downloading Windows 10, problems started emerging. Nothing happens when I click on the the icons for home, cortana, connecting to the internet, or power. It is impossible to establish an internet connection, the troubleshooter "couldn't identify the problem". The audio service is also malfunctioning.
I tried to run a recovery, but was unable to do so, as "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working". I ran sfc/scannow several times, and the result is that it "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".
Is there a way to stop the middle mouse button (i.e. click of the scroll wheel) from opening Cortana/search?
Things I've tried:
1. Searched Google. No useful results. The closest I found was that Windows 10 may be confusing the click of the middle mouse button as the 3-finger tap on the touchpad - which opens Cortana/search by the default. But I don't have a touch pad. I have the Toshiba PX30T (Toshiba Qosmio PX30t 23 inch Touchscreen All-in-One PC - Black/Silver (Intel Core i3 3120M 2.5GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVDSM DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8 64-Bit): Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories).
2. Tried re-configuring the middle mouse button in (a) Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Mouse & touchpad, (b) Control Panel > Mouse, and (c) my desktop's manufacturer's System Settings utility application (upgraded just now from their website). Interestingly, none of those three configuration tools had any control setting for the middle mouse button.
It is obvious that Windows 10 doesn't "fully" support the wireless mouse that comes with my PC.
Is there a way to "unbind" the middle mouse button from opening Cortana/search? For example, via the Registry Editor - maybe?
This problem is on a desktop computer (HP Pavilion). When I click the start button, the start menu does not display. Pressing the Windows key on the keyboard also does not take me to the start menu.
I can access the right-click menu on the start button and most of the items on the right-click menu respond correctly when clicked (a few don't. No response from "Search" and "Desktop"). I installed Windows 10 over a month ago and have had no problems until now. Everything was working fine yesterday and to the best of my knowledge I have changed no settings since then.
So I've tried so many things, There's another post on here where you put a command in powershell and that doesn't seem to be working. Some people say their anti-virus software caused the issue and i uninstalled mine and still nothing! I'll try everything that's commented even if I've done it before.
I believe I got the message saying start menu and cortana aren't working and that they'll work on startup. I dont remember getting it but after reading about an issue where someone mentioned it I vaguely remember just ignoring it. If you need any specs, I'll provide them. I keep trying to ignore this issue but would really like to try and fix it.
I can't get Cortana to start/work - just says it's disabled for my area UK, UK english - time zone London - what's going on here?

I have tried running commands in power shell and booting my pc in safe mode using msconfig, but both of these had no effect. I also tried create a new user account but when i click on "create new user" nothing happens no loading or sign of any process taking place nothing happens. And i cant reinstall windows because windows is forcing me to delete about 630 gb worth of files and games which i dont want to re download since it will take a month, and an even longer time to reconfigure them and add all the mods i had within the game files
View 4 RepliesNo start & No cortana and a whole lot more missing in Win10 10240 Pro Insider. Program after program is not "connected" or "linked". I have done many "iso" but still the "banner headline" CRITICAL ERROR.... we'll try and fix the next time you sign in. This saga began over 2 weeks ago after stunning success on a HP Elite quad and a Dell 660s quad both insider upgrades to Win10 10240 with no problems.
But this HP Pavilion HPE AMD dual quad Nvidia GPU has been broken all this time. I can't communicate on it at all. During the upgrade the install % was 75 or 80 but the most I've seen since is fail around 25% install. Yet winver says I have Win10 10240 and it activated!
I've done many many bios interventions but none of them has changed my desktop HPE one bit. The "Critical Error, fail" banner is on permanently.
I probably could wait until MS catches up to their unfortunate "insiders" that have run into a "brick wall". But, can even they fix this "brick"?
Keeping in mind this is a bios (not Eufi) I can't even get to a "format" for the C: drive. How to "unbrick" this thing? Is "format" C: the answer?
I believe that is what is causing the 'critical error'. I uninstalled the software and upon reboot my start button and cortana were working perfectly again. Now I'm sure you all know how to uninstall software on your PCs but it may not work in normal mode with the critical error as it didn't with me. Therefore I uninstalled in safe mode. Incase you arent familiar with how to access safe mode on windows 10, heres how: You press ctrl+alt+delete, and in the bottom right hand corner you click the power button. Before you click 'restart', hold down the shift key until the next screen is displayed (blue). Then click troubleshoot, advanced options, start-up settings, restart. Once it restarts, press the F4 key, and when it restarts you will be in safe mode. Now just do the normal thing to uninstall avast and then reboot following the installation and it should be fixed!
View 24 RepliesI got nearly a week ago a HP laptop that originally had win 8 on it, but installed win 10 right after starting it up. Things are working fine so as the bringing up the start menu by clicking on the start icon. but for the last 2 days now the start button does not pop up anymore when i click on it.
Doesn't matter if i move the cursor over it with the touch pad or with a mouse. also the search icon next to it doesn't react either. all the other icons work without any hassle.
I am still not a 100% familiar with win 10 and laptops, so im not sure what the problem could be. I can right click on it to turn off the laptop but being able to call up the menu with a simple left click should be functional.
Sometimes Start menu and Search/Cortana buttons become frozen and only after hard boot they work.
View 4 RepliesI've searched everywhere, and even uninstalled Cortana from Windows Features.. It's no longer running.. but i can't figure out how to unpin it from the Start Menu.

Following search results, I have tried the "scannow" and 'reinstall all Windows apps' suggestions. Scannow found no errors, and reinstalling Windows apps did nothing to work. When I click on the Start button (that usually brings up the Programs Menu, I get the little twirling blue icon for about 5 or 6 seconds, then... nothing. Cortana is dead, or away on vacation.
BTW, all my Taskbar program icons work, all the system tray icons (except 'Notifications') work, and a right click on the Start button brings up the usual context menu. Also, I tried installing Start10, but that didn't work either.
I upgraded to Win 10 a week ago and after a long updating session was well pleased with the OS - everything seemed to work normally and much faster than before.
However, a day after the last updates were installed (KB3081449 and KB3081448) my normal screen appeared with a boxed message ;
'Cortana and Start Menu aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. Sign out now'.
Signing back in does not fix the problem. I cannot access the Start Menu or Search box. I still have my normal (Win 7 style) screen that luckily still has my shortcuts and I still have WiFi access. I have to shut down using the power button.
I don't know how to access the installed updates (There appears to be no access via Control Panel) and restore options only allow a 'revert to Win 7' - is there a Restore option available that takes you back a few days?
This issue just popped up after restarting my computer today. Earlier, all the task bar icons were showing and I could see the time/date, but clicking on them would do nothing. Also whenever I tried to open pictures with "Photos" I would get an error message about something timing out and I would have to use windows explorer.
So I restarted, and when I booted my computer up again, the task bar icons never showed up and the time and date is gone. I can't click on cortana and clicking the windows icon will bring up nothing. I've restarted twice since then but nothing has worked so far.

I upgraded from WIN 7 SP1 to build 10240 on FAST Track. I did a RECOVERY DRIVE, and after trying to restore from it, I am getting this message - in a loop, can not exit from it. I also find my backup and system image do not work.
My son's user account displays the Windows 10 Start Menu and Cortana functions as it should. He doesn't have to log in to use his account. MY user account, which I log into with my Microsoft creds, has the "Start Menu and Cortana won't work" problem. I must right-click the icon to get the list menu view.
I thought that the whole computer was the subject of the "Start Menu won't work" problem and resigned myself to the idea that it was a hardware problem. Learning otherwise tells me that it's some kind of configuration. I have administrator rights and did the setup. Oddly, the Start Menu and Cortana functioned on my login initially, but buzzed out shortly after installation (which was immediate upon the upgrade release).
I've already done multiple iterations of sfc /scannow. The report is that there's nothing wrong.
I'm in the habit of launching most applications by hitting the Windows key, typing a few letters of the app name, and then hitting Enter.
Unfortunately, the Cortana search box is no longer able to find any applications. It shows me a list of local documents, and offers to search "My Stuff" or the web.
When I choose to search "My Stuff," I can filter by Documents, Folders, Apps, Settings, Photos, Videos and Music. Selecting "Apps" invariably returns no results. I am left to manually navigate through the Start menu which, while not terribly difficult, is more of a hassle than I'm used to.
I've only noticed it on the RTM build (10240), while the previous build (10166) worked fine for me.
I started my PC and I don't had access to the Start menu, so I restarted explorer.exe is task manager. So it restarted but it doesn't worked. I signed out and signed in and I got that error message. I restarted my PC and the error was gone and now works, but I have a question. What was that?

View 14 Repliesmy start button wont work, i cannot restart my computer and even from the sign on screen the only option i ave it to shut down. my icons are still on the taskbar but i cannot view them and when i open my browsers its deleting my last sessions even when i have them saved to appear each time i open the browser. my time and date is gone as well as any viable option to get to my drivers and computer settings. the only thing ive been able to get to is the actio of using the windows button and pressing r but each seach i get an error message that anything i type cant be found.
