Opens Folder At Boot - Msconfig Stuck At Selective Startup
Oct 5, 2015
1. If I try to select normal startup in msconfig.exe, it doesn't stick; always reverts to selective startup.
2. When I boot to the Windows 10 desktop, it always opens a Windows Explorer window at /windows/system/ which shows only a Speech folder in the right panel.
3. Checking my BootManager using BCDEdit, I see this but I don't understand what the entries mean or whether any of them are connected to the problems 1 and/or 2:
Code:

Yesterday while checking things on here I ran msconfig for the first time. I found that selective startup was checked off. Not something I set so win 10 must have set it when I installed it. Now what reason would this be for?

I was instructed to use Selective Startup to get Quicken installed (didn't work), and now I can't get out!
This is a laptop that has been stuck with the Microsoft account login (cannot fix it as other options are grayed out). I cannot login with my Microsoft login (says password is wrong), but I can get in using just the Admin. acct., with same password.
Using Admin. acct., I cannot get out of Selective Startup, most items are grayed out, or if I can select options (Enable from Disabled), then I get an error that things cannot be changed.

I have noticed in my fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro, when running MSCONFIG that my system is set to Selective startup. If I select Normal startup and click Apply, it immediately defaults back to Selective startup again.
I also notice that one service under the Services tab is not selected - Geolocation Service. Here too, when I select it and click Apply, the check box is cleared again.
I have not disabled any start up programs. Only thing I did was uninstall MS Apps Get Office and Get Skype.

My Windows 10 home-64b works flawlessly, but I've realized that the system configuration stubbornly continues to initiate under "Selective Startup" instead of "Normal Startup" which makes me wonder which "services" cannot be loaded. I've tried to change it but it continues to be the same "selective Startup". This makes me uncomfortable cause possible future problems.

I am trying to determine why Firefox takes 20 seconds to open. This does not happen in Safe Mode so presumably another package is causing the delay. Consequently, I wanted to start in diagnostics mode. However, as soon as I click on the button for Diagnostics startup, the blue rotating circle appears next to the mouse pointer and never advances. I checked in Services and found the Diagnostics Host Service is not running and cannot be started.

I have a Lenovo laptop upgraded to Windows 10. Last night I switched it off but now when I turn it on, it stucks in the startup Lenovo logo. I think that it is a driver issue but I cannot boot it in safe mode to fix it? What can I do? ( I don't mind to lose my files).

In my desktop I have two hard disks ( disk 0 and disk 1 ) . Disk 1 is a clone of disk 0 created by Macrium Reflect
Disk 0 : ( C: ) windows 10 pro , upgrade from windows 7 , ( E: ) windows 8.1 pro , ( G: ) Storage partition
Disk 1 : clone of disk 0
problem description : I see in msconfig / boot a wrong listing
windows 10 ( C:WINDOWS) : Current OS ; Default OS
windows 8.1 pro ( H:WINDOWS ) instead of ( E:WINDOWS )
Nevertheless the dual booting works fine as well as the shift between the disks via BIOS.
The question is , could I fix the situation using the EasyBCD of Neosmart Technologies to edit the bootloader ?
I see can change drive letter H: to E: and save the change , am I right or wrong ? or any other way ....

Over the weekend I upgraded from 8.1 (which was working perfectly) to Windows 10. Unfortunately, it had a few problems - namely that it would 'hang' at random intervals (5 minutes to 5+ hours). In an attempt to isolate what was causing this, I was advised to use Msconfig to do a clean boot.
Unfortunately, in the process, I have rendered my PC near-useless, as I accidentally ticked the box "Use original boot configuration" under Selective startup. (I know, I know. I'm so cross with myself.) As a result, I am now presented with what looks like my old boot screen - offering Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 with Media Center, but no Windows 10.
(I originally had Windows 7 on what is now my D: drive. I ended up dual booting with this and Windows 8, but I'm pretty sure the version of 8.1 - which I've just upgraded to Windows 10 - was a clean install. It's certainly on my SSD (C: drive).)
Anyway, by using Change defaults... - Choose other options - Troubleshoot - Start-up Settings, I was at least able to bring up the screen that gives you Safe Mode as an option. This allowed me to boot into Windows 10 Safe Mode.
I went back to MSConfig and eventually found a way to deselect 'Use original boot configuration' (it was greyed out for a while). However, on restart, it still showed me the old options, i.e. no sign of Windows 10 Pro. It seems the only way I can currently boot into Windows 10 is via Safe Mode.
I've tried various things today - I tried to use Bcdedit to force it to look at the C: not D: drive, and I've tried booting with a Windows 10 DVD and using the Repair option (but partway into the repair process it starts thinking it's a Windows 8 machine again...).
I've just 'spoken' to a chap at Microsoft and he is adamant that there's no alternative (because there's no Refresh option under Settings - Update & Security - Recovery) but to reinstall Windows 8.0, and then upgrade to 8.1 and then Windows 10. As you can imagine, I really, really don't want to go down that route. But, at the moment, I can't even roll back to 8.1.
Given that I can still - sort of - boot into Windows 10, the correct MBR/BCD/whatever must still be on my C: drive somewhere, surely?

A script error message started opening about a week after I upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10.
Here is the info in in the message. I guess it's about what broke in the script. [URL] ....
It asks whether I want to keep running the script. Yes No. Since the message just told me the script was broken, I press No. The startup completes. I can't see that there are issues with how the computer operates.

When I try to open a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens the "Documents" Folder by default. I have to choose "Open" or "Open in New Window" to get it right. If I select "Open Windows Explorer" or double click on the folder, my Documents folder opens. I have reset every setting I can think of to default settings. I installed IoBit Advanced System Care9 Pro and was fiddling with a bunch of settings before this occurred.

every time I double-click a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens in a new window. I know there have been problems on this in earlier versions of Windows. The ONLY time a folder opens in a new window, is when the folder is located in the PICTURES folder. On some occurrences, the folder I'm clicking is opening twice.
Another strange thing I noticed, is when I delete something. When I used to delete something, the folder would automatically update and remove the file without me needing to do anything. Now, I have to refresh the folder I'm in to actually be able to see the picture I deleted gone.Making sure the registry key of HKCRFolder is empty.Running the sfc /scannow command in an elevated command promptChecking the Explorer options for opening a folder in the same window or a different one on and off.Checking the double-click and single-click options on and off.Making sure I do not have this "Vault" program that everyone is talking about... Explaning the .GIF I linked (if you didn't understand it).I'm double-clicking a folder within the PICTURES folder. Two windows open of the folder I clicked. There are now currently 3 windows openI close the two windows, and redirect into the MUSIC folder.I double-click a folder in MUSIC and the folder opens in the same window.

When I boot up, reboot, Windows Notepad opens automatically with an error box "! Access Denied" - when I ok that it leaves a Notepad blank screen open. I close that and boot up is complete and I can work normally.
Cannot see anything in startup.

Unchecking the "Turn on Fast Startup" command in the above setting path does not do it. There is supposed to be a motherboard software for enabling a normal startup the next time the computer is restarted.

So I recently upgraded to windows 10, the Installion performed successfully, I selected my account and chose the express settings, after this I was presented a green screen with a series of dots spinning, I let this run for well over two hours in which nothing had changed, after waiting I did a hard shutdown.
When loading up it gave me a blue screen where I had some options to choose my os, where I selected windows 10, the screen then went black with the windows logo, then the green screen returned, I then went to bed and upon waking up it was still stuck on that green screen.
I tried clicking, escape, when pressing Ctrl alt del I was presented a navy blue screen with a few options, network status, ease of access and shutdown options. I've done multiple restarts, on the blue screen where you select os i have tried safe mode and now I am attempting to restore previous build.

I started my computer and came back to find it at a error screen with the smiley face saying that information needs to be collected then I can restart. It displayed and error code and mentioned something about a driver error. I waited until it reached 100%, but it didn't restart on its own so i shut the computer down manually by holding the power button on my case. Then it booted up, but it got stuck on the spinning circle of dots.
I have been able to press Esc, CTRL+ALT+DEL and F2 while at the spinning circle which bring me to the login screen but without the box to enter my pin, however, I am able to access the network, ease of access and power options. I have tried restarting, shutting down, and holding shift while restarting in an effort to boot with safe mode but none have gotten me farther than the spinning circle.

In the diagnostic startup mode there's no search so I can't run msconfig. Is there another way to do run this? I got to where I'm at now by running msconfig, staying on the general tab (not the boot), unchecking normal startup, then checking diagnostic. No matter what I've tried (including combing this forum and searching online) I still can't get out of diagnostic startup. There are other things going on with my PC, such as at least one virus, the Trojan Zeus Banker. I'd like to try a couple of more things before I put my PC in the shop and probably pay mucho dinero.

I wrote a program that runs on windows 10 just fine from a shortcut on the desktop. I copied the shortcut to the startup folder for my account and did all the compatibility changes so it would run. It worked fine after a few test startups but now all the sudden it no longer works.
Not sure if MS installed any updates between it working and not working, all I know is it ain't working now. It shows up in task manager but really isn't running.

After an update to Windows 10 I started getting "invalid register key" errors with every open. I restored a previous registry value prior to the last update and still go the error. Instructed to boot up in safe mode but as I logon using my microsoft account, safe mode does not open wifi connection and the password cannot be verified. At least I think that is what is happening as I reset my microsoft account password using another computer and it is still refusing the password on the windows 10 machine. Is there anyway around the password request and get the computer to boot up in regular mode?
