View 2 RepliesSometimes Start menu and Search/Cortana buttons become frozen and only after hard boot they work.
View 4 RepliesEvery time i want to delete a file or folder off my desktop i get the message : Invalid MS-DOS Function. I am therefore unable to delete anything off my desktop. Is there a fix for this?
View 1 RepliesWhen clicking on the start menu or using the windows key on my keyboard nothing happens as well as trying to type in the search bar. I have tried running commands in power shell and booting my pc in safe mode using msconfig, but both of these had no effect. I also tried create a new user account but when i click on "create new user" nothing happens no loading or sign of any process taking place nothing happens. And i cant reinstall windows because windows is forcing me to delete about 630 gb worth of files and games which i dont want to re download since it will take a month, and an even longer time to reconfigure them and add all the mods i had within the game files
View 4 RepliesI have installed Win 10 Clean. Meaning no update but from ISO on USB All is well but I cannot use the search function to go to an app or other function. or file. Is there an setting I have missed.

View 1 RepliesI am unable to use the SEARCH THE WEB AND WINDOWS function in Windows 10. When I click on its icon on the task bar, the hour glass circle flashes momentarily and immediately goes off. What needs to be enabled in MS CONFIG for this function to work? I have enabled every item in MS CONFIG, and still the problem persists. Also, could there be a driver problem involved?
View 1 RepliesI have 8 NAS drives on my network that is attached to my computer. Prior to upgrade to Windows 10 - from Windows 7 , I could go to file explorer and then search all the NAS drives for the info that I needed.
In Windows 10, I can see on the NAS drives under This PC but when I try to do a search, File Explorer will say working on it and it will never complete - it stops responding. Windows 10 is the latest version(november 2015).
I don't have the vocabulary yet to state exactly what is happening.
I upgraded from Win 7 and Win 8 on several machines....though I was reasonably happy with Win 7 and Win 8.
After a few months, win explorer started to misbehave on my desktop, but the laptops are not going crazy.
In performing editing and relocation of folders, win explorer was slow to update, and deleted folders were still showing. Certain content seems to hang it up, such a video files. Closing and re-starting WE did not fix the issue and sometimes only a reboot would reset things.
The issue seems to be in the search function. If is always indexing and looking for something and the cursor circle is always in action and the hard drive is working like crazy.
More annoying is that a new windows has shown up with tabs across the top for selecting what is to be displayed and how. I cannot simply get back to the good old WE detailed view that I work with. Where did this new window come from?
Using Windows 10 Home.
If I search within a folder for say *.* and then delete a file, the list of files does not refresh.
The file remains listed even though it's been deleted.
If I manually refresh then the file disappears from the list. Same thing happens if I undo the delete.
I need to hit F5 to make the file reappear in the search list.
I just did the upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10 - overall pretty seamless given what could have gone wrong- I was lucky this time. Some minor annoyances , but overall pretty good.
On the task bar search, about an hour ago, I know it was searching the web as I typed in a web address and it took me there....but now, suddenly, its only searching my local machine. I must have inadvertently changed something. that affected this. Where is the setting to get it back to the way it was so I can search the web?.
I know did change my default Edge search engine from Bing to Google...would that have affected the task bar search function?
I also turned Cortana off - did that affect it??
I recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.
just done a fresh install with the latest iso available. here it is the problem using search/cortana... (honestly i didn't care in the past, so i don't it's a normal beahaviour) -loggin in as administrator i can use the search and find settings like "system restore" or "personalize" -loggin in as limited user, no matter if local account or microsoft account, i can't search for settings and i get the message "incomplete" on top of the window... but all documents, images, start menu entries, etc. are showed perfectly. i googled around, but i couldn't find what happens to me. solutions are for completely broken search service. even create a new account or recreate the index didn't work.. is it normal for limited users?!? bug?!? i don't want reinstall again
View 5 RepliesI am enjoying Windows 10 very much, but I don't have the option for the Cortana search bar. When I right click on the taskbar and hover over Cortana, I can only choose between hidden and icon. I tried to change the value in the registry to 2, but that didn't work.
View 1 RepliesIn windows 10 it says I can chat with Cortana and ask it questions and get a personalized response, but this isn't the case for me. It says I can speak aloud or type, but since I've no mic, I choose to type.
When I ask it something like "How's the weather" or "How tall is Jeff Goldblum?" I get a bing search page that pops up instead of a Cortana response. All of the interests are enabled and such and I've filled out the about me with my name.
As soon as I start typing ANYTHING, it shows results for "The Web" and "My Stuff" but doesn't even try to ask Cortana the question.
I just reinstalled and there's no option in her settings to turn off the web search she does when you search for files on your pc and such. How else could I turn it off if its not listed in her settings?
View 5 Repliessearch box a.k.a cortana isn't working. I tried the method with task manager to end the process but it isn't working. how can i make this work?
View 4 Repliesesterday I had my Tablet PC (Windows 8.1) returned after the upgrade by a technician. I have encountered some issues, some fairly minor, others more significant ---- especially Cortana and Search not working:
1. Cortana does not work. She is said to be unavailable because of the language and region that has been selected. The language is English USA (needed for the keyboard) and the region is UK / GB, surely neither of which should be causing any problems?
2. Search does not work. It generates the error 'class not registered'. I have encountered this error before, so from searching in the past I have seen that this can be caused by a number of different factors, hence it is hard to identify what to do.
I will work on the other issues after these two have been resolved.
I have visited the How To site and found that my situation is commonplace, complicated and worldwide. There are many in a similar situation in the UK. On the one hand it is comforting to know that I am not alone and others have resolved the problems --- eventually. However, on the other hand I note that many of the postings date from July, and feel it should not still be continuing to happen now.
If I have understood it, the problems revolve around getting the settings for region / display language / speech language configured in a mutually compatible way.
This is a clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64. Search box on the taskbar does not work. Clicking on the Search box makes it change color, but it is not possible to type anything into the box. Opening Start Menu before clicking on the Search box sometimes works. In 1 case out of 10 Search box suddenly starts working. But it only happens when Start Menu is open. When Start Menu is closed, Search box is unresponsive. Trying to click on the Search box in such cases generates a barrage of entries in Event Viewer:
In Application log, lots of errors like this
Event 1000, Application Error
Faulting application name: SearchUI.exe, version: 10.0.10240.16401, time stamp: 0x55b1a665

My cortana bar seems to be missing some important stuff when I search. Regedit is completely absent when doing search for one.
View 1 RepliesSo I just installed Windows 10 a day ago, and all I have to say is wow, Microsoft did great. I'm blown away by it's speed/ease of use! Anyways, when I click on Cortana, the only options that I have are to show or hide the Cortana icon, I don't have a "Show search box" context menu selection. I installed Windows 10 through the insiders program page when I installed.
View 8 RepliesI have no Ethernet what so ever... I updated everything I could including the Ethernet from ASUS. I get limited connection.
View 1 RepliesThe search box keeps popping open at random. I turned off Cortana but the search box keeps coming on. This is very annoying. If I want to do a search I'll open it myself. How can I stop the Cortana / Search box from popping itself on?
View 2 RepliesI have tried everything under the sun to fix this. The search/Cortana button on the taskbar is unresponsive. Whenever I try to adjust setting under Cortana & Search I get this error:
ms-cortana://StartMode=Settings&QuerySource=Settings
The app didn't start
I found this video on youtube. It fixed one of my major problems with windows 10, bing! As much as i love having a search right on the taskbar, bing just does not seem to work with me !

I've got a system here which is acting up and I'm looking for ideas of how to resolve. Specs are:
Windows 10 Home (upgraded from W8.1)
i7-3632 8GB RAM 64bit
Inspiron 17R5720 laptop
Here's the problem: Everything works fine upon boot, but then, something happens over time, and things stop working.
Start left-click not working/Start right-click works
Notification left-click not working/Notification right-click menu shows, but open action center doesn't work
Quick Launch opens and works
All icons pinned to the taskbar work including File Explorer
Cortana and search not working - can't type in box
Speaker icon left-click does not work, right-click does
This is all intermittent, and resolved with a reboot.
Something sets it off to stop working - perhaps the screensaver/lockscreen?
Fast Startup is off, hybernate off as well.
