My PC is a home build with ASUS mother board, XENON CPU and 16 GB of RAM; it has run flawlessly for two years on Win 7 Pro; I changed to the "free" Win 10 dwnld and everything ran smoothly for past 3 months. Started up today and "no screen" with the typical bios info and nothing but darkness. I'm not sure if this is a virus security problem since my past experiences all had screen feed back with bios access prior to Windows starting. Assuming some villain attacked my PC at its heart by somehow messing up the bios set up, I tried restoring any lost or corrupted files using a flash drive with the ASUS ROM file on the MB disc as well as a latest downld. Still no relief. If not a security matter or a Win 10 fault, perhaps the mother board failed at some innocuous point which allows the board to function with all fans running and using power. I thought the NVidia adapter card could be at fault and installed a tested spare with no change in lack of video for the bios. Still have to test the power circuits and will let you know of any success.

View 9 RepliesIn my computer I use Windows 10 x64 and I have 6 GB of RAM installed. I face the problem of high usage of Ram from System process. Although I hear that this is something normal for Windows 10, this tends to freeze my PC or prompts me to close running programs although I do not have that much open. I updated all my drivers, I also tried everything proposed in various solutions around the web but the problem still exists. Could it be some update of Microsoft? A friend of mine running Windows 7 with 8GB RAM installed in his computer, faces the same problem the last weeks too.
View 1 RepliesMy PC was running Windows 8.1 with no problem. I upgraded to Windows 10. Installation went fine, but right after I logged in to windows, it started to continuously run a shell script in background. A shell window pops up on the computer screen every few seconds for a fraction of a second.
This happens everytime the computer is powered on. Not only this is very disturbing, it also resets any text windows that are open at that time. So, if I am typing a password, it comes in the middle and wipes off the text from the text window.
I have tried disabling all startup programs and several running processes, nothing seem to solve the problem.
My computer has been having a problem with locking up randomly. Hard reset is the only way to recover. I ran stress test on CPU, GPU, memory checker, Sea gate tools was never able to recreate the problem or find any issues with any hardware. I also swapped out video cards and still had the same issue. I also monitored temperatures and never had it get hot. But if i reboot into safe mode with networking windows never locks up.

I followed Brink's tutorial here: Shut Down Computer in Windows 10 And I saw that there are 2 ways to fully shutdown Windows through cmd: /s and /p. What is the difference between these 2, if both of them are said to perform a full shutdown?
View 3 RepliesThis is something that recently just started happening. I click on the start button and click Shutdown and everything seems to go normally and the monitor goes black but the computer will not shutdown. The activity light continues to flash and after a few mins my PC just boots back up, almost like it was doing a reboot.
View 1 RepliesI am in a similar situation. Upgraded a self build PC from Windows 7 to 10. Now, I am unable to shutdown. I have turned off the Fast Startup, but it still reboots when I hit 'Shutdown'
View 2 RepliesUpgraded from Win 7 which ran as normal. But now under Win 10 Pro, both "Restart" and "Shutdown" produce a restart.I have reflashed to the last BIOS just in case but to no avail.
View 3 RepliesI have installed W10 twice using the update feature. Everything work fine except when I want to shutdown or put the machine to sleep by clicking on those options, the machine makes noise like the HD is working. It then just shuts down and reboots again. The only way I can shut it off is by using the button on the computer.
View 2 RepliesI set my screen to turn off after ten minutes but it doesn't shut off. Today I read somewhere that it could be because I have a USB hub plugged in. Sure enough I unplugged the Hub and my screen shuts down as I have set it up to do. I need what is plugged into my hub and it is a real hassle to reboot my machine when I plug the Hub back in. I have also noticed one more thing and that is that programs that run in the back ground for instance Seti @ Home slows way down since the screen stays on.
View 4 RepliesYes, I have the box checked to play sounds on startup under the sound tab in Control Panel. When I test other sounds on the sound tab they play fine.
I have noticed that Dolby Home Theater v4 did not migrate with the upgrade from Win 7.
I've installed Windows 10 just fine, with the latest Nvidia Win 10 driver, however when I reboot my system nothing works, not the start menu, not the apps, they do nothing, can't shut down except for a hard shutdown, after the hard shutdown the start menu and apps work fine until the next shutdown,
View 4 RepliesI installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 on my laptop (Dell 7720). While running Fallout 4, I encountered sudden power-off for my system.
The power button did not turn back on for a couple of minutes and the bottom of the laptop was quite hot.
How can I ensure that this unexpected shutdown was due to Laptop overheating and no other reasons (such as Driver conflicts or bad drivers) ?
PS:- In the event viewer in the System tab , I noticed 3 major events , 1 critical, 1 Error and 1 warning. Attaching these 3 FYR.
I set up a "shutdown" shortcut on my desktop that calls "shutdown.exe" and almost every time after I click on the shortcut I see a message dialog box that saying explorer is not responding and it takes a while for that dialog box to close and then finish shutting off the computer.
I've noticed this also happens when using the start menu->power->shutdown.
Is there a way to shutdown windows 10 without installing updates? I know previous versions of Windows had command line or registry tricks that worked with this. Note the version of Windows 10 I am using is the normal version you get with the free upgrade.
View 8 RepliesProblem : HP proBook 6570b goes into sleep mode when clicking on start /power / shutdown .
What I have tried : went into advanced power setting in power & sleep tab and made sure the correct settings were applied under power button and lid and some other setting . I think they look correct anyway but i,m not an expert .
Uninstalled the HP power management app in case there was some conflict but this didn't change anything .
Current state : Able to do soft shutdown till system goes to sleep mode then press power button 5 seconds to completely shut down .

W7 used to be fairly slow to start, about 2 minutes, but it shut down pretty quickly. Since "upgrading " to W10 my PC takes about 3 minutes to boot and even longer to shut down. Unless I can leave it, I usually just switch it off after about 30 seconds.
In other forums I have heard reports of boot times ranging from super fast (15-30 seconds) to funereal (5 - 10 minutes and then some). How to speed this up?
I was thinking that a clean re-install would be the best solution, but since this was the free upgrade, I don't have a copy to re-install. Maybe do a clean re-install of W7 and let MS upgrade it again (maybe!)
I've been looking into clearing the pagefile, and I found the following steps at a somewhat dated webpage:
In the registry editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementSet ClearPageFileAtShutdown to the REG_DWORD value of 1.Restart Windows.
I'm just wondering whether those steps are still valid, and, if so, does clearing the pagefile work as advertised?
I installed Windows 10 one week ago, but I still have issues with the sleep mode. I configured the laptop, that whenever I close the lid or I use my function key the sleep mode is started.
Unfortunately the laptop is either not entering the sleep mode correctly or is not able to restore it. Which means when I open several programs they won't open again.

looking for a way to force shutdown and restart of pc. How to do this for win 10?
View 9 RepliesI thought W7 was slow to boot, about 2 and a half minutes, but W10 is even longer, over 3 minutes.
W7 shut down fairly quickly, but W10 is taking as long, if not longer, than it does to start up.
Okay so I've upgraded and use windows 10 for about 2 weeks now. All is fine until I've experienced this random shutdown where the computer turns off completely in a splitsecond then reboots itself. No BSODs, no warnings at all. Recently, it's been shutting itself down and reboots itself but won't even make it to the login screen before it shuts itself down again and this will continue in a loop. I had to turn off the plug and turn it back on. It will prompt a system restore which the computer will work fine for a while after the system restore. I assume this problem is because of windows 10 because I have not experienced this problem when I was using windows 8.1.
