Performance :: 100% Disk Activity Time And HDD Health
Feb 23, 2016
I've got a Dell Vostro 3450. It has never worked really well, but the performance has been degrading recently.
I have recently updated to Windows 10, in order to see if it would solve the performance problems. But then I started to face others, so I went to the forums to try to cope with them.
One of these matters was the disk activity time spiking to 100% all the time. I've tried all the things I read, but none of them stopped it.
Then I figured it could be something with the HDD itself. So I downloaded HD Tune Pro Trial and the Health screen is the one that follows.
So I ask: Can the 100% come from the HDD bad health?

I'm facing a problem with the task manager. Suddenly both of my HDs stopped showing any activity in the task manager and are constantly show 0% although there is activity and despite the fact that in the resource monitor activity is shown properly. What the fault might be?
I think they've stopped after I connected an external HD. But I am not sure though so don't rely on that being the issue.

I've been having this problem for a long time, I've tried resetting my pc to factory settings, didn't work. I tried windows trouble-shooter, didn't work. When I boot I am greeted with a zoostorm logo for about 50 seconds followed by a black screen for 1 minute, and then a windows screen for about 30 seconds. Booting takes about 2-3 mins and even when I'm finally in, my programs load extremely slow and I can only open chrome after a minute otherwise it lags. Remember I have reset my pc so nothing runs on startup apart from steam.
I have a gtx 970 and the latest drivers for it. Also I get 100% disk usage when performing certain tasks. my cpu,gpu and memory never go to such percentage and if they do its because I'm running a very cpu,gpu or ram intensive game. I have not changed anything in my bios since I got my pc and have never done anything to the disk drive (all I know is my HDD is 3tb and has a speed of around 120mb/s) The only thing I have changed on my pc since I got it was an upgrade to windows 10 from 8.1, gtx 970 from a 750ti and a 750w power supply by corsair.
I do not know if this problem happened when I had windows 8.1 but even if windows 10 is the problem there must be a way to fix it as I despise using windows 8.1 anymore. Another thing to note is that loading times for games take a little longer than my friends and my pc is slow at downloading games, my disk usage when installing games is usually 13mb/s and I get 100% disk usage from using 13mb/s. As you can see by this screen shot steam is downloading fallout 4 and 14mb/s of my disk are being used and everything else barely reaches 1mb/s

Looking for one that works with Win 10 and can show multiple drives. Had been using Drivegleam but it frequently crashes under Win 10, sadly.

After launching Mozilla hard disk activity seems to be permanently on, as if Mozilla where reindexing or something. It takes a long time (10-20 minutes) to stop and it makes browsing a very jerking experience. Of course I did a clean install to rule out some corrupted installation but no dice.
Launching Resource Monitor shows that all disk activity is being done by Mozilla FF and Windows Defender (Firefox being the first candidate).

I finally had to set up a dual boot with Ubuntu so that I could browse the net in peace. The constant clicky-clack of my hard drive drove me nuts. Windows lately has not given it a rest. Ubuntu on the other hand hardly ever causes overuse of the hard drive. Windows needs to get a handle on this problem..

I installed Image Health software and love it. My question is about option 11 -"Run ShowCasePlus to retrieve windows Product key. When I choose this option the command window pops up with no info in it. If I run ShowCasePlus from the bin directory of Image Health I am getting the Key info. How to get it from option 11.

I am running Windows 10 Pro. Over the last couple of days, for some reason, the OS reports 100% disk usage, even when no application is apparently running. It was quite alright a few days ago, but troublesome over the past 2 days. I had assumed it was running some background task, and would become normal, but the abnormally high disk usage persists even after the machine has been running for half an hour.
In this period, no Windows updates were installed, and only a scheduled checkpoint was created 4 days ago. If I try and restore to the checkpoint during boot, I get an error, saying the PC needs to be repaired. If I try it from the recovery option in Windows 10, it does not shut down for a restart, just keeps on the blank screen saying "Initializing restore". The entire time, according to the indication light, the disk seems busy.
I tried disabling superfetch and background intelligent transfer service, but did not work. The spike in disk usage is not specific to anything, sometimes it is the system, other times the malware service...
I do not wish to reset the laptop, as I had quite a few things installed, but I do not have the installation media for those anymore, and so would not be able to install them again after the reset.I have the installation iso for Windows 10. The laptop is Dell 17R SE 7720. I had upgraded to Windows 10 Pro almost 2 months ago, and it had been running fine.

Windows 10.10240 on a 40 GB HDD partition - required to make another 7 GB for upgrade to 10.10586. Deleted a few GB of ISO downloads and then ran Disk Clean-up for about 400MB.
So far it has taken about twice as long to do the clean up as it will to complete the upgrade, and it's only 2/3 cleaned.

I recently purchased a new Windows 10 laptop (HP), which I presumed is a 'clean install' and I'm mooching around looking into how to create a recovery disk. Anyway, when I go into control panel, underneath System and Security I see a link that says; Back up and Restore (Windows 7).I'm wondering why there's a reference to Windows 7 on my Windows 10 device?

I have been using Windows 10 for a while now with no issues, I currently have three HDD's installed in the PC, one that's used to boot windows, a secondary 250GB for extra storage and a 1TB drive to storestream movies from.I was aware my 1TB HDD was not 100% as it came out of a faulty NAS drive, but after a full format it worked perfectly for over a year with Windows 7, but after the 10 upgrade it would completely disappear after a certain period of time, this was resolved by changing the power options to stop Windows turning off the disk.
Now i'm faced with Windows trying to perform a repair on the hard drive at boot, which takes ages to complete and boot windows, then after a restart it does the same which is frustrating.Question is how do i turn off this disk checking feature in Windows 10?For the mean time i have unplugged the HDD and all is working as normal, but obviously i would like to be able to use it and use other software to check the disk.

I'm getting a constant high disk usage without even having anything running. Here's a screenshot of my problem
And well, so far I've tried the ''deactivate 'windows search' and 'superfetch''' and it hasn't really done the trick.
Also I resetted my pc yesterday, as of now I'm running a clean install of Windows 10.
Did the ''turn off notifications from Windows'' and really nothing, I've also defrag quite some times with Defraggler and DiskDefrag and nothing.

My time is always out of sync, it makes it increasingly difficult to follow conversations on Skype, for instance. I try to manually update the time and it tells me fairly often that there's an error when trying to update. It doesn't matter if my PC is powered off or if I'm using it, the time is bound to get out of sync, so I doubt it has anything to do w/ the CMOS battery. Should I be using a different time server other than time.windows.com? I'm also using Webroot SecureAnywhere Anti-virus. Not sure if that's causing a conflict or not.
I'm on Windows 10 RTM... I'm not connected to a domain, just a regular Windows Home network...

Recently I have been finding my PC powered up when it should be sleeping. Using powercfg -lastwake does not show a cause but looking at system events I can that there are a series of events each day starting at 08:59:31. One of these is a Power - Troubleshooter event which says that the system has returned from a low power state but Wake Source is unknown. This and the other messages are ones that normally appear if I wake up the PC manually. There are subsequent events from Windows Update so I thought that might be the cause but it does not run immediately and I now believe that it is running because the PC has woken up and is not causing it to wake.
I have checked in Power Options Advanced Settings/Sleep and Allow wake timers is set to disabled.i have checked that on my network adaptor, 'Allow this device to wake the computer' is not checked.I have checked Control Panel/Security and Maintenance/Automatic Maintenance and Allow scheduled maintenance to wake my computer at the scheduled time is unchecked.
I had also checked in Task Scheduler and under WindowsUpdate there are 4 tasks but under Conditions, none are set to 'Wake the computer to run this task'.Checking back through the event logs it seems that this problem first happened on 27th Sep and always happens at 08:59:31. I have looked at the event log for the previous day and can see some events relating to the installation or update of a device driver although I haven't made changes to the hardware for a long time. It is followed by an event relating to Disk 3 which I don't normally have so I assume these were as a result of plugging in a USB device. There are also events relating to a windows update of VCLibs 12. how I can track down the culprit?

I need diagnosing why my system disk is running at 100% without anything actually running.
My Anti Virus is not doing anything, windows update is not doing anything, and my disk is not defraging.
I would have never noticed this happening if it wasn't for long load times and reduced FPS in anything 3D. My mouse and keyboard even are lagging and hanging.
My system disk is at 100% and a constant write speed of 1-2 MB/s and a constant read speed of about 200KB/s.
How to diagnose what is using my disk 100% of the time?

Since I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 (who knows when, within the week of first release) I've had a plethora of issues, and recently I found the source of the problem. My computer spikes to 100% disk usage randomly, even with nothing open and will suspend all applications on the computer. A couple of random things can set it off (sometimes when I open the "Search the web and Windows", open an application, Ctrl+Alt+Del, and ALWAYS when I boot my computer)
I've tried every. single. thing. that I have seen on the internet including but not limited to: superfetch, registry stuff, Unistack thing in task manager, Windows defender, uninstalling programs, defragmenting my 1TB Western Digital HDD even though it says 0% fragmented, cleaning up my HDD, checking if my HDD died which it hasn't, and updating my drivers, stopping all startup programs, disabling unused Windows apps, though nothing has seemed to fix the problem permanently. I also used to get this "Display driver AMD has stopped responding but has recovered" though I edited something in the registry and it doesn't show this anymore but I still experience the same problem. I'm quite fed up with this, and I'm thinking about buying Windows 7 in an attempt to downgrade.

I have a PC running Windows 10, but it is taking an unusually long time to boot. It can take more than 5 minutes, even though the boot drive is a 250GB Crucial MX200 with the latest firmware. I know that this is a very vague issue, but if i should provide more info for you, let me know.
My motherboard is an Asus Q87M-E btw.

For some reason, my disk, when i open my computer and at some other point, always spikes up to 100% for a few minutes.
This happens when :
at the start, Something called System and compressed memory always make my pc go to 100% disk usage. Later on, there are all those Service Host going up to 100% and something called RzStatsManager
When i open norton or when i download something new it also goes to 100%, each time I open google chrome too and Steam make the disk go to 100% at the start and every time i open it it goes to 20% and the system memory goes to 80%...
All these times, the disk spiked at 100% for a few minutes.
I disabled all my notification, each time i open my PC i disable Windows search and superfetch but it spikes up every time. What can I do?

I have this issue where windows seems to hang/get stuck every 5 to 10 seconds for about 2 seconds, like right now while I am typing. I type the words and about three words types out and then hangs for 2 seconds and the rest I typed while stuck gets lost and I have to backspace and restart again.... Same happens with mouse clicks, sometimes when I click it does not register (I presume it is right in that 2 sec delay sweet spot) but the mouse cursor movement is smooth and does not get stuck.
SO I checked my Task Manager and found that RAM,CPU and Network are all low in the 10% - 20%, but my HDD Runs at like 80% -100% all the time. See Screenshots of Task Manager and Resource monitor. The disk keeps getting used full load every 5 to 10 sec.
I have tried disabling Disk Defragment service in the Task Scheduler and several other tips I found on the net but no luck.

So I have a 200 GB Hard Drive on my computer. A couple of days ago I got a notification mentioning there was not ten GB of space left. I was surprised, but I assumed I just had more on it than I thought. However, since then I have re-installed Windows for my own reasons and was surprised to find despite removing all documents and applications in the re-installation, I only had 90 GB free. This leaves 110 taken up by an unknown cause. I could not find many large files in file explorer when I searched for large files (file:gigantic).

I started experiencing this after my brother installed some malware on my pc while playing CS GO. I have removed all the malware i could find and have ran memory and disk tests which have shown me nothing but positive results, but when i run furmark the disk usage climbs to 100%. I also have noticed my nothbridge overheating which might be the issue. I also have a shady 600W psu that needs changing because it is old and I don't trust it.
I have
CPU: intel i5 3330
GPU: Nvidia gforce gtx680 refrence
RAM: 8GB kingston value ram
PSU: 600W super cheap generic psu that came with the case
HDD: wdc wd5000aakx-001ca0 500GB that needs changing
MOBO: msi MSI H61MA-E35 (B3)
[code]...
Edit:I found out the reason for my hdd stopping while under load was that one of my 6 pins was a 2molex to 6pin adapter and one of the molex cables was also the one powering my hdd through a sata power cable. So i plugged in a different one and now it's fine.

I've had this problem where my disk usage would spike to 100% before going back down to like 2%. I looked at countless forum posts and different sites and I found something which was a temporary fix, which was turning off tips about windows...
That worked for a while, and it just makes the intervals in-between the spikes longer, and now my memory has started to spike pretty high to about 99%, and wont come back down. When it does this I have to do a hard shut down as my pc just slows to unusable...
I also tried disabling ndu.sys in the registry, which didn't work either.

Now that my computers are updated to Windows 10 , are the old back up disk images with win7 of any use ? Can they even be used to revert back to Win 7 ? Should I just delete them and make new disk image with win 10.
