Performance :: Backup Add A Drive?

Jan 2, 2016

Jan. 3rd 2016 I have a 931 GB external HDD using a brick power supply and connected by USB. I wish to do weekly backups to it via Start/Settings/Update & Security/Backup.

It is not listed when I click Add a drive, although I can see and read it in This PC. I tried a restart but that has not worked. I do see a couple of USB sticks which are too small. Trying via Advanced settings is the same.

Prior to trying to add this drive I scrolled down and followed the instruction which said to delete the previous drive which was also an external HDD connected by sata. I used THAT drive via Macrium and it got carried over in the W10 update from W8.1.

Performance :: Backup With System Image Failed Because User Files On 2nd Drive

Oct 9, 2015

I have been trying to setup a scheduled backup (Windows 7 Backup and restore) on Windows 10. I want to include a system image of the C: drive as part of the back up and save it to the D: drive. However Windows wont let me save the image on the D: drive, I think because I moved the location of my user files to the D: drive to save space on my SSD.

Any way to override or workaround this without having to move my files back to the C: drive?

Performance :: Secondary Drive Is Included (mandatory) In System Image Backup?

Oct 13, 2015

I want to create a system image of my primary drive (an SSD) on an external 230gb hard drive as backup for any incovenience.. My pc runs windows 10

Performance :: Recovery USB Media / Drive - Control Panel (Backup And Restore)

Feb 10, 2016

Windows10 Recovery USB Media/Drive - Control Panel ( Backup & Restore )

I have upgraded to Windows 10 from Widows 8.1 (pre-installed) , on my "ACER Aspire E1 472P- 6491" laptop by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 . I do not have a Windows (8.1 or 10) product key , as the Windows was pre-loaded on the laptop .

Now I want to make a " Windows10 Recovery Drive ", which can be used later to boot/re-instal Windows10 in case my Laptop fails to boot or to reset/troubleshoot any problems on Windows10 . Accordingly I tried to Create Factory Default Backup via Control Panel ( Backup & Restore ) option, but I found that it is meant for Windows 7 or 8.1 only ( which means that the system can be recovered back to Windows 7 or 8.1 only - not Windows 10 ) .

Why Backup & Restore is meant for Windows 7 only , when I have upgraded to Windows 10 already . In fact I have upgraded to Windows 10 from Widows 8.1 ( not Windows 7 ), then why it is taking me back to Windows 7 ? Can I not create a Recovery USB Media/Drive Backup for Windows10 for future use , after I have upgraded to Windows 10 ? If not , then how to make a Windows10 Recovery USB Media/Drive .

a) After upgradation to Windows 10 , why Control Panel ( Backup & Restore ) option is meant for Windows 7 ( or 8.1 ) recovery .

b) How to create Windows10 Recovery USB Media/Drive Backup that will work to boot/re-instal Windows10 in case my Laptop fails to boot in future .

Performance :: What Exactly Does Backup Do

Dec 3, 2015

I am puzzled by the term backup when you go to Settings > Backup.

I have a folder on my NAS defined as my backup drive.

I have set the time interval to every ten minutes until I am sure of what is being backed up.

Does the backup process store MY files as opposed to WIN 10 files in that folder and could be used to restore them if I had to re-install Win 10?

Performance :: Backup And Restore

Dec 25, 2015

Just bought a new Windows 10, Office 2016, Ultra HD Lenovo computer. Already having issues, surprise surprise! Not only are there scaling/blurry issues with some apps, but Windows Backup and Restore is displaying the following error:

The semaphore timeout period has expired.

I'm trying to backup to an external Seagate drive.

I've tried several fixes as I was previously having this issue too ([URL]), but nothing has worked.

Performance :: Can't Backup A Specific File

Jan 28, 2016

I just bought a WD My Passport Ultra and it comes with a copy of WD Backup. Never using backup software I decided to give it a try and see what happens. I had no problems at all until I ended up with a message "These files failed to back up: UPPS.bin, 15.77kb". so I decided to try and find the file, which I found. The question is, what this file does and is it necessary to backup? Probably most of you know where this file is but for those who don't you can find the file at: C:UsersUser NameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsUPPSUPPS.bin.

Performance :: Applying Backup Without OS Running

Jan 15, 2016

addressing in order to not lose my data. To give a bit of background, my laptop has 2 internal hard drives, 1 is my main/primary drive which I used for day to day operation and the other was just a backup drive which has a system image of my system.

My main drive failed, and after many horrifying clicking, scratching and high pitch squeals coming from the drive, I can only assume it has failed mechanically and isn't some kind of virus. So now I'm currently left with only my internal backup drive with a system image on it.

I was hoping to use this backup drive as my new primary drive, however I want to keep the files on the backup drive. I checked with my Hirens Boot CD and saw that my backup drive contains everything my other hard drive had, including the operating system contained within the Windows backup folder.

Normally for this I would install windows on another hard drive and then restore my files with the system image. However my laptop doesn't have a system restore disc or a copy of windows, it instead came with partitions on the hard drive which requires erasing my backup and consequently losing all my data.

I finally ask the question, is it possible to use the files currently stored on the backup drive without having to resort to buying a new hard drive to copy the files across and then partitioning my backup drive?

Performance :: Windows Image Backup Failing

Feb 10, 2016

My wife's Samsung laptop gets a failure whenever trying to do an image backup. Actually, this has been happening for quite a while - even before she installed Windows 10 when she had W7. I was hoping that the problem would go away with W10 but it hasn't. Backup runs almost to the end and then fails with the attached message. The message says to run dskchk on both her drive and on the backup drive which I did. No problems were found. (I backup my desktop on that drive all the time with no problems.) I tried backing it up on another external drive that also tests good but got the same error message.

Performance :: How To Stop Getting File History Backup

Feb 23, 2016

Whenever I do the File History Backup; at completion it gives me the following message: "Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:UsersAdminSkyDrivePictures. Error: (The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003))". I believe this occurred for the first time after I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I no longer have a SkyDrive folder it was replaced with a OneDrive folder. For some reason it is still looking for the SkyDrive folder. In the "Exclude from File History" screen I am unable to exclude the SkyDrive folder. I guess that doesn't surprise me because I no longer have SkyDrive folder. How then do I prevent this error occurring when doing a File History backup?

Performance :: Clean Install Then Recover Backup

Nov 17, 2015

Long story sort I kind of messed up my GPT partition table. I have backed up an image of my Boot partition only (C:) and not any other partitions such as bootloader etc...

So my question is, would I be able to start all over, re-format the drive from Win10 installation media and do a clean install, then paste my backup onto just the boot partition leaving everything else in tact? I know how to rebuild the bootsector in case I can't boot.

Edit: Wasn't sure if this should go here on into the Install section, mods feel free to move it if needed.

Performance :: Use File History Or Win 7 Backup And Restore?

Nov 13, 2015

I've been using Backup & Restore on some Win 7 systems but now I have added a new Win 10 PC (from HP).

It's not entirely clear to me why I would use the Win 10 File History facility versus Win 7 Backup & Restore. File History looks like a partial backup. I'd prefer a full backup. Win 10 advertises creating a System Image but I don't consider that an alternative to a file backup with all the files (mine and the system's).

Performance :: Does Windows 7 Backup And Restore Work

Nov 23, 2015

I've noticed after upgrading Windows 7 to 10 that Backup and Restore (from 7) remains available in the Control Panel. I haven't looked at it yet, but wondered if perhaps this app doesn't work properly in Windows 10?

When I try to run backup manually, I get an error saying that I don't have enough space. My C drive is a 745 GB drive with only 128 used. My backup drive is one TB with 438 used and 656 free. I would think that would be enough space. It always worked under windows 7. What do I do?

Could Not Boot From Bootable Backup Or USB Drive

Jan 17, 2016

After the recent update I had some problems and decided to reset my system. For some reason I could not boot from my bootable backup drive or a bootable USB drive. I have software which came with the external drive and it previously backed up and created the bootable USB drive. So, I reset the pc and of course it wiped out all my programs like the backup drive software, Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, etc. etc.. I reloaded the software for my backup drive and then was able to restore from the image which I had previously created. Of course I had to get the update again but it went well yhis time. All the programs were there and my system is operating flawlessly once again. The image backup was a lifesaver.

I highly recommend the external usb backup drive for recovery purposes. It was extremely easy to create the bootable image backup (for recovery) and keeps a running backup as well. There are numerous ways to create a backup but this was just too easy and, as it turned out, worked well for me.

System Image Backup To USB Drive?

Apr 1, 2016

I recently purchased a Lenovo 900 ultrabook, and proceeded to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro (using a Windows 7 Ultimate product key). Now that I have done this the factory "restore" does not include my upgrade and I am concerned that I would lose it if I ever needed to restore.

So, I am trying to do a full system image backup to a flash drive, but Windows 10 says that the drive is not allowed for this. I can create the USB drive as a network share and get the backup to work using that method, but I don't really trust that it will work properly.

How to do a full system image backup to a USB drive in Windows 10 that you trust will work in the case a restore is needed?
