I have found that my CPU usage is running at 30%, due to Service Host: Local System (15). I have the list of the 15 processes, but how do I find which one is using all the power.
View 1 RepliesFrom the moment I switch ON my desktop until switching OFF (working for 12 hours) the local system service host is always between 30% to 40% regarding CPU usage.Why? How to stop it?
This does not happen in my Microsoft Surface Pro machine. Both machines, desktop and Surface have the same software installed so it's hard to believe this CPU usage is software based.

Recently I am getting notification that my memory is low, close some application to free the memory. But I wasn't running any high memory consuming programs. Then I looked into my Task manager and got this :
I am really not sure why this is taking so much memory. This Service Host: Local System continuously taking more and more memory and it moves total memory upto 80% ....
This didn't happen before I am recently facing this problem. How I can stop this so that it doesn't take this unusual memory. I checked windows update but no update is pending.
I installed Windows 10 (10130 build) and I love it. The only problem that I'm having with it is this Photo Background app that eats my cpu(30-40%)! When I start up windows I need to kill it in task manager everytime. But even after I kill it if I leave my laptop in idle it still comes back. I want to understand what this Photos Background Task Host is doing, his functionality...

I am surprised that this is not a topic of discussion. On my laptop which I migrated from windows 7 to 10, I always have a high CPU usage for Microsoft Search filter host. A search of the internet shows that this is an issue.
I have tried to disable with no luck. My next attempt will be a change in registry.

Add a REG_SZ value named Debugger and give it data of c:windowssystem32svchost.exe.
One drive is disabled, No store and no Microsoft account on this desktop. At shut down this event error will be reported "Sync Host 386de service terminated unexpectedly....corrective action in 10000mlsec ..restart the service
Searching the registry results in that there is no 386de sync host service , There are others in the registry but not this recent 386de
In the past I did edit the START to be 4 (suggested in this forum general discussion on similar sync host errors) . The setting was returned to 2 when no change was observed.
This error tends to appear when external drives remain plugged in. Since the Nov. upgrade if externals are left in a usb3 port the system restarts. I now unplug but last night after recent Jan updates I tested by leaving in 1 Usb3 external.
Windows Defender is shown both running AND disabled. I have no third-party security or firewall.
I am unable to select this service here (msconfig)-(but rightly set as 'Automatic' in services.msc) nor am I able to set Normal Startup: on applying, all changes are cancelled.
I must have removed some needed startup program or app...?
HOWEVER, Windows Defender DOES start on boot and all is swell. No log errors except for Cortana, which is broke and shows a registry error, but that is another question, I think. In case it is not, here's the log:

My printers have stopped working and I get the message that Windows can't open Add Printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine. I've restarted the machine several times with no solution. How can I restart the print spooler?

I went into services.msc and disabled the windows search service; then restarted my computer.
However, "Cortana" is still listed in my task manager taking up 50mb of memory.
How do I kill Cortana?
For some reason, my printer doesn't show up in applications such as Microsoft Word or Libre Office, although I'm sure that it's connected properly to the computer because it still lets me scan documents. When I troubleshoot the printer, I get this error message: "The Print Spooler service isn't running".

It also says "Audio Service is not running" but I checked under "services" and it clearly is (and I can hear audio!). I even restarted it to be sure.

I've notice that on windows 10 and 8.1, task manager would show the my max cpu core speed is 2.3-2.4 ghz. However, my Core 2 Quad q8400 is rated at 2.66 ghz. I tried changing the power settings in windows and try lowering my cpu temperature, but my speed would never reach 2.66 ghz.

When I was running Windows 8.1, I had this same problem. Upgraded to Windows 10, issue persisted, until I reset the PC (August). After I reset, CPU usage was normal. A few weeks ago, though, CPU usage has jumped right back up to 100% (per Task Manager). I've tried running malware/virus scans, updated SSD firmware, looking for resource-hogging processes, and none of it has been conclusive.
View 8 RepliesI am running Windows 10 Pro. Over the last couple of days, for some reason, the OS reports 100% disk usage, even when no application is apparently running. It was quite alright a few days ago, but troublesome over the past 2 days. I had assumed it was running some background task, and would become normal, but the abnormally high disk usage persists even after the machine has been running for half an hour.
In this period, no Windows updates were installed, and only a scheduled checkpoint was created 4 days ago. If I try and restore to the checkpoint during boot, I get an error, saying the PC needs to be repaired. If I try it from the recovery option in Windows 10, it does not shut down for a restart, just keeps on the blank screen saying "Initializing restore". The entire time, according to the indication light, the disk seems busy.
I tried disabling superfetch and background intelligent transfer service, but did not work. The spike in disk usage is not specific to anything, sometimes it is the system, other times the malware service...
I do not wish to reset the laptop, as I had quite a few things installed, but I do not have the installation media for those anymore, and so would not be able to install them again after the reset.I have the installation iso for Windows 10. The laptop is Dell 17R SE 7720. I had upgraded to Windows 10 Pro almost 2 months ago, and it had been running fine.
This is not an issue but more a curiosity. I have the old Windows cup / ram monitor running as a gadget on Windows 10. When the PC is idle for a few minutes I notice the cup usage always spikes to around 10-13% and stays around that mark. As soon as I touch mouse and move it it then plummets to 0 or 1%. Is this normal? I wonder what it could be doing. It's not as if I can use task manager to see because as soon as I move the mouse or go to use the PC the usage returns to 0 or 1? I presume Windows is doing housekeeping stuff and it's a non issue?
View 4 Repliesnot sure since when and how ( must have been recently ), but my windows 10 got probably infected, whenever i start pc, my cpu usage jumps to 55% ... After I open task manager, i can see this ( attachment ) :
The PID of "faulty" service is always different and if I stop the process, i am ok until next reboot. Windows defender detected nothing after full scan, I have never downloaded any exe files or opened some bad web page, only .mp4, .avi files and games from Steam.
Should I format and reinstall windows, just to be sure or is there some other tool to find out what happens / fix my problem ? I have no important data or work on my pc, so format is ok, I just dont want to spend several hours reinstalling everything...
My laptop's CPU usage hit 100% and stayed there, and the fan came on even though the CPU and HD temps were normal (CPU 44-47C, HD: 39-42C). Any thoughts on what happened? Restarting seems to have fixed it, at least temporarily. I'm doing a virus scan, and I'm going to start going through the logs, but which of the vast number of logs I should start with.
NOD32 and MalwareBytes both say no threats, malware, etc.

There is a concurrent fault listed for the Canon scanner driver, CNC210C.DLL, which is not corrupted.
